You're so on point about shell material and all that. I see drummers online talking and arguing about shell material and drum brands and I find it so absurd. Drums are so simple and I never ever tell apart two drum brands if blindfolded. And I'm sure as hell when people listen to songs they will not be able to say if it's Tama or DW, or if it's birch or maple. Because they all sound the same. The heads, drum sizes, tuning, the room the drum is in, microphones, production, mixing and the player make all the difference when it comes to drum sound, And you can achieve any sound with any drums by working with those things.

Another thing many people stress out about is taking breaks/not having any motivation. I've had entire months without picking the sticks up once and honestly, sometimes that's just what I need to refresh my motivation and then pick up where I left and keep going. It's okay! It does not destroy any of your progress.

James, I wholeheartedly Agree with you. You said it Right!! I'm 70 yo, retired, and "resumed" playing drums after 50 Years. I didn't play since our HD Buddies Garage Band disbanded in late 1969. Took initial lessons in 1966, maybe 6-8, and learned primarily By Ear with the Garage Band (which never got out of the garage). After disbanding, I lived in apartments with my parents, had nowhere to keep a drum kit (we called it Drum Sets in my day). So, after getting a Cheapo Gammon Kit form of all people , my wife of 45 years in 2019, I started to play again. I had to Shake Off a lot of Rust, but the basics came back pretty rapidly. I always played Air Drums. Now, I play about an hour each day to My Music : Petty, Beatles, Stones, Clapton, Mellencamp, CCR, Steve Winwood, some Motown, Rascals (Dino Danelli was my first Drum Hero {Ringo and Charlie Watts too} , The Animals, Hollies, Cars, Talking Heads, etc. I'll probably not be playing for other than Pure Enjoyment (hey you never know....a Geriatric Band could be in My Future , if the Arthritis doesn't finish me first), but find great pleasure getting to play successfully to any of these tunes , keeping proper time, and engaging with the Music. Playing gives Me a certain Satisfaction in Life. I tend to be a OCDish about many things, and I'm trying to Not let That Happen with playing Drums.... Rob's advice is well taken: Enjoy The Ride ..

Rob, I'm 67 yrs old been playing off and on since I was fourteen. There isn't one of those 5 things that I didn't over think along with hundreds of other things. Drove myself nuts and I still fall into the trap, there is always something else I will find to over think. The difference now is I realize I'm doing right away and pause for a few minutes and regroup and be patient .i will eventually be successful at what I'm trying to accomplish on the drums, even at my age, believe me when you get old you will over think that too. " am I to old to learn something new and challenging"Is my brain working to slow" "am I forgetting to much," are my hands and feet going to deteriorate soon." On and on. Nothing's really changed. When the student is ready the teacher will appear, just like you did Rob. Your the teacher I need now and because of that I'm playing at a higher level than I have ever played, all I had to is learn things I am still capable of. Rob your teaching me 90% of the complicated methods is a waste of time for guys like me and I'm getting a little short in that department. If it's to much trouble it ain't no fun. Being enlightened just means lighten up. KISS. That's what works for me

Man, I kinda needed to hear this. I especially like the point about wood types. I have what I consider a mid level Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage kit. Having to share my kit on tour, I've had so many compliments on how good they sound by guys that had way better quality kits. It's all in the tuning and heads! However, the one thing that Rob said that really brought it home is that drumming is a lifelong thing. I've been playing drums "off and on" for over 40 years. I learn stuff everyday from all levels of drummers. One game changer I learned recently is fulcrumming with your middle finger. I was always taught to fulcrum with my index finger! Using my middle finger as the fulcrum seems to give me more control and power. It was an eye opener! Anyway, thanks Rob for putting this out there. The best quote ever is "Masters stay masters because they're always students". I'm not sure I'll ever master drumming but I'm definitely a lifelong student

A +20yr break, was overthinking everything, Cymbal type to how I was sitting on the throne.. Let it all go during this Pandemic... Made a 180 move away from overthinking/stressing in life period. I also stopped listening to music I know/knew. from when playing Tom Sawyer or fool in the rain to Watching you bye Slave, stroke for stroke meant you were a good drummer. Since the 1st lesson in 4th grade, all I've been doing is playing other people's work. I didn't learn to create. Now, I feel free to create.. Amazing what happens when we stop overthinking so much..

100% Amen to that, this is so true. I few years ago I realized myself that I always practiced replicating others rather than finding my own sound. It’s hard to explain but once I stopped overthinking and made it a goal to improvise, it’s turned my drumming around 180.

Amen to all of this! It's like a vindication of the stuff I've dismissed throughout my life. When drummers get all focused on certain technical aspects, and I'm like "man, I've had my kit recorded so many different ways, you'll hear two different versions and swear it's not the same kit". Once the kit is tuned, mic'd up, run through an EQ, all done by studio engineers, the wood type of your toms isn't going to have THAT much to do with the sound. Rob reminds me so much of my first (1 of 2) drum teachers, and he used a 2 mic setup, one overhead, one kick. And he ended up playing with some pretty big projects (RIP). Thanks for this great, great video!

Thank you so much for making this! I’ve been playing for 28 years, but I was self taught and never made time for practicing rudiments. Once I was older and started watching all these videos about how “you need to practice at least 45 minutes a day” and “at least 20 of that should be rudiments” I felt like I’d been doing it wrong my whole life and that I was way behind where I should be. Then getting in my head about it made me overthink it to the point where I wasn’t feeling the music anymore, and I lost my groove. Anyway, hearing all this from you is a relief. Thanks Mr Beatdown!

one of the best videos I've seen on youtube regarding drumming and maybe something that should be on the short list of videos for newcomers. The amount of time I wasted trying to perfect tuning was WEEKS long. The amount of time I wasted trying to find the right "second kit" also weeks. Trying to find the perfect practice regiment, worrying about small things that just bogged me down instead of trying to have fun...just a ton of truth in this video. Thanks for making it, wish I had seen something like this a few years ago hahaha.

Rob, I’m a DW guy, I have a DW collectors kit and a top of the line PDP kit, they both sound incredible and of course I’d choose my collectors kit for most situations, HOWEVER once you have the correct heads on the PDP kit it doesn’t sound much different than the 8k collectors kit, actually in some situations as outdoor gigs the PDP kit sounds better. I’ve never been into the whole tune your drums to pitch of the shell concept, I’ve always tuned to what my ears tell me, these turning gadgets will drive you crazy and take time away from your practice schedule. Hopefully younger drummers take to heart everything you’ve mentioned, every point you’ve mentioned is spot on! Great video brother!

I think something to add to the progress point would be to not overthink learning a new song or skill. When I started drumming it was mainly when I was younger and couldn’t afford a kit. I didn’t play alot after high school and just started playing again because I could finally afford a kit. When I started playing alot (10 years later!) I would get discouraged because I couldn’t play a Rush song I’d heard a million times or i couldn’t do that fill in another song. I couldn’t play that exercise perfectly on the pad right away. Then I had a long conversation with my significant other. She told me something pretty amazing. Why does it matter if you can’t play it right away? It’s a hobby enjoy it. And I did. For most of us, we aren’t drumming professionally so there should honestly be no pressure. I recently got Steve Gadd’s new book Gaddiments and am loving it. I’ve had it for a few months and am barely on page 4 but I’m getting through it slowly. Overall though I’m enjoying every second of it. That’s what matters. Thanks for the inspiration Rob! 👊

Hi there mr Brown, i still remember at one of the best advices i got from all the videos i've watched (on youtube) in the last 3 years since i got my drums was about How and What to Practice for diferent people, for me it was practicing anything other than music on the Pad watching TV, on the drums practice my songs, It worked for me. And now i feel much better knowing that took you 3 years to start practicing stuff. Teen Spirit, Black Hole Sun , Song 2 and now Dont you forget About Me, each song with diferent styles, speeds, small chalenges that made me realise that practicing was really necessary, 3 years lates i started to give my self to practicing while watching Netflyx and such. Thank you so much Mr Brown.

As a GenXer I appreciate your approach. I watch channels and read reddit drum posts and the angst underlying them is so intense and regimented it gives me panic attacks. It's insane the over thinking out there now with the "you gotta do this for 2.76532 minutes then you gotta do that for 3.675444321897 minutes or you're wasting time!!!!" Good God if that was around when I was learning I'd have quit years ago. People have got to chill out and just enjoy playing. You're a voice of sanity in a world of anal retention.

I, like Rob, started many moons ago by cranking my stereo as loud as possible finding a radio station and started playing along with whatever came on. It worked, but I really made giant leaps when I started playing with other musicians. The single most important thing that Rob imparts here, in my opinion, is HAVE FUN!!!!! Ive been fooling around with guitar in my spare time and getting extremely frustrated, then the other day someone said to me “Just ENJOY PLAYING YOUR GUITAR!!!” The most humbling beat down Ive ever gotten, it changed my guitar playing literally overnight. Our prime objective as musicians is to have fun and make sure people are having fun watching us. The overriding theme that Rob states in all 5 of these, and its my biggest problem, is STOP OVERTHINKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very informative, and so refreshing to watch a video that encourages simplification rather than over complication. Honestly, the 5th point had me let out a sigh of relief, "masters stay masters, because they're always students". Staying in love with the process is by far the most important aspect in the pursuit of mastering the un-masterable, an instrument, (in my opinion), thanks for this video!

I think what hit me the most in this video was the « progress » part. I started using my MPC in 2004 and used it for finger drumming. I finally got a Roland kit in 2021. Since I know how to track a song project from start to finish the only thing I worried about was keeping my hands loose when tracking. Every thing else came into fruition. There’s a million things I could practice but I chose playing grooves and fills with loose hands. I will admit your channel influenced me in buying the TD50K2 kit and practicing. I’m glad I did

Amen to all of that, especially the tuning. For anyone who hasn't seen them i would thoroughly recommend watching the Beatdown tuning method videos and spending a little extra on getting some decent heads for your toms (Evans for me, all day, every day...). I'm still playing my "starter" kit and honestly see no reason to upgrade. Snare is a different matter, but even then all you have to ask is "does this sound how I want it to sound?". And when you find the one, you just know 😁

WOOD TYPE: Thank you for that tip! I do think we buy too much into "the warmth of X material" and "the projection of XX material." There are subtle differences, but most of us are playing in bars and small clubs, it's not noticeable. I still remember a guy years ago in a band we opened for using a old Tama Swingstar, that he tuned just right. It also helped that he was really good drummer and it sounded good.

I’ve been playing for a long time. I love that someone is putting on video what I’ve said to anyone who asks for years. With everything that is in this video I want people to take away. Don’t get so caught up in learning certain specific things for whatever reason. If YOU (that’s an important distinction) want to learn it then do it. Recently for me it’s been about speed with my hands and some cleanliness with double kick. The foot thing is always something for me but I recently got my dream pedal after YEARS. So setting it up and adjusting has been a fun thing to learn. But there is almost always something to work on and learn. Paradiddles have always been a thing for me wherever I go….flams and hertas even. As Rob said “lifetime….”

Ahh man, it took to my 40's to really enjoy practicing. Now I can't get enough time on those things! I'd go all day if I could. First 25 years I played strictly metal. Now I play funk and soul, and I love it. It all comes with repetition and time. Enjoy the ride!

Only thing about getting the measuring tape out for mics is making sure the overheads are the same distance from the snare, so the sound of the most important piece gets to them at the same time

This is exactly why I listen and study with you! I’d been out of Drums for quite sometime and then got together with an old band of mine and fell in love with sticking and relearning “the process”. BecAuse of your guidance I am developing into a better player… wish I knew then what I’ve learned now. I used to get disappointed watching others just shred… but now i am playing better and don’t feel that insecure. My playing is good, but I am enjoying this new path… thanks Rob! 😊

i respect you bro so much, i really want to get into drums, im 27 years old, and i feel like i achieved nothing in life. I feel this primal desire to become a good drummer, and vibe and listen and learn and separate drums in every song i listen to, whether its electronic or not. I want to become good enough to feel happy from myself. Thank you for these videos, they help clear your mind from the fog that surrounds people with these type of desires. i need to keep improving

120% agree with You, Man! I play the drums for the last 25 years, I studied classical and jazz drums too. I played a pretty cheap standard Pearl Mirror Chrome snare with a 20" Gretsch Catalina shellset, and once I purchased a fancy DW snare for my first big festival mainstage gig. It sounded the f*cking same! I sold that DW snare one day later :) LOL I ended up with a Pearl Midtown shellset with a Carl Palmer signature Ludwig piccolo snare, and I am happy. I think its more important to practice and SERVE the songs what I play. And having fun of course, because music is fun. Always :) Respect Mr. Rob!

Rob, this video was right on the money. I’m 30 plus years into playing and I have had ALL of the thinks you mentioned consume me at one time or another. BEST advice ever…Fall in love with the process. Game. Set. Match. Very profound. Thanks for keeping it REAL!!!

The best drum therapist around! Got something getting you down tuning, technique, whatever..... this guy probably has a video on it. Check in with the drum doctor and feel zen again. Tuning was my thing, bought gadgets on gadgets and watched hours of videos, watched Rob's videos and sanity returned. Think I might treat myself to a hoodie!

This is one of the most important drum videos I’ve seen. For a number of years I was getting caught up in practice routines, comparing myself to other players, becoming fixed on trying to find the perfect sound etc. Eventually I became frustrated because I always felt like what I was doing wasn’t enough. Then the beat thing happened, I stepped away from drums for months. When I came back, all of that stuff seemed irrelevant, I just wanted to have fun playing. It didn’t matter if I was drumming on pillows or a custom, high end kit. I just wanted to play. When I stopped over thinking about things, I had way more fun and significantly improved. I wanted to drum, it wasn’t a chore anymore.

Well said Mr. Brown. I have been playing getting close to now 52 years and still learning. Your drum tuning videos are the best for an overall good sound on the kit. I don’t worry about it too much anymore. Just try to get on the kit everyday and play. That’s the thing. Whether its for a half hour or three hours, its all good. Just try to mix things up every so often to broaden your playing. Thanks for your work on the channel. You have given me some really good ideas and most importantly motivation.

Wow. I am fairly new to this channel. Rob has such a great attitude and delivery when it comes to his videos on drumming and the whole thing about learning the drums and the many things that surround drumming. I have gigged many times. I think I have the knack for drumming and yet, I can only say that I am pretty much an average drummer, and I just turned 60 years old. I have played since the age of 15. Now I watch this beatdown Rob fella and I am pretty excited to work on improving my drumming skills based on his tips, and so far I am having fun doing that. Rob is Canadian too. That seemed to be important to me, and when I confirmed that, I was really happy about that. We can be proud about this Canadian fella, Drumming wise and personality wise. Wonderful!

Love the video. Just recently got back into the drums now that I'm retired started practicing rudiments and reading books and watching videos got to be a little overwhelming. Now I just sit down and jam to some music and I'm really enjoying it

I’ve been playing the drums since 1965 and professionally since 1972. The best advice I can give young drummers is to concentrate on becoming a good musician, not just a good drummer. My piano snd vocal skills are what made me a better player. Understanding what’s going on musically with the guys / gals you’re playing behind is going to give you an edge when it comes to getting calls for gigs. Some diva vocalist doesn’t care one iota if you can do Thomas Laing calisthenics behind the drums.

Hey Rob..my name is Donald. I just started playing about 3 months ago. I've taught myself accompanied by your tutoring. I play for my church but I am definitely still a lower level novice. I'm completely sold and hooked on my drums..but my passion surpasses my skills. Thanks for your lessons sir..I will stay at it.
