History dan name one country where that has a large population that hasn't inflicted some form of genocide on others... Name one country that hasn't had slavery in their entire history. I suspect you can't find a single country that hasn't been guilty of these things at point in time. People are individuals. white people are not all the same... white people come from different parts of worlds and speak different languages..... European colonialism was horrific but just because I'm white doesn't mean I agree with it in any shape or form. But what can I do? Get a time machine...

Prioritizing marriage over casual relationships is actually something I like about China. I think Westerners should be more like China in this regard and take relationships more seriously, including accepting in-laws as members of the family.

This is the real problem when you visit China as it enacted Anti Espionage Law and National Security Law requiring a Chinese citizen to report any suspicious foreigner in China! but the laws are too vague to know its standard of arresting a foreigner! Thus all over China all kinds of shitty reports on line (a blogger just tap the screen to report!)to obtain $70,000 reward! This is rampant activity all over China! And when you leave for your home country at the airport you may be stopped! Know how dangerous to travel to China now! I am a traveler and blogger and I can assure everyone that traveling to China is not as safe as you travel to the West or even Korea.. Surveillance, and hidden cam, and even plain clothes secret agents were watching every movement of any Western looking people, and through the satellite was transmitted to the data base nearby, and full profile of any Westerner in China is stored and at the airport when leaving for their home country you could be stopped at any time and any day and anywhere! Even a hotel I stayed at security officers regularly check any Westerner! It is still awfully police state reminding me of the Nazi Germany! Folks! let us not travel to China and spend money! I totally agree with this, especially the last point about professionals. I went to China to teach College prep science. With a double chemistry degree, fresh out of college, I was ready to take on the world. I did love the work, but life outside of work was a wreck. I'm much happier now back in the states and making better money. Not getting food poisoning on a regular basis is a plus too.

Starting a business in any foreign country is tough. I married a Chinese woman and we live in Xiamen, Fujian. I can make a living working about 6 hours a week, which would never happen in the USA - teaching ESL and coaching soccer. So if you are looking for a laid back lifestyle, you can do that in China. Xiamen has amazing beaches too. I do miss the quiet of the USA. Chinese people go to quiet places for vacation because they are constantly bombarded by noise. Its crazy. Thanks for the documentation of your experience in China. I've had an overwhelmingly positive experience in my 5 years in China, but I do avoid the polluted air and eating out as two ways to take care of my health.

Misha Bear my dear it is ok. I've been chased on the streets when I asked for my money, had to hide in bushes and construction sites, had been threatened personally and my next of kin, held hostage, blacklisted and intimidated. It is normal in China. Their god is money. They will kill all your family or better sell for kidneys for money. I have no simpathy left, when it comes to chinese *based on 12years of business experience in China.

Especially if u r a foreigner or a mixed, local people will view u as an exotic species or a real alien( that happens sometimes inland); that's the point which the locals will expect u to speak some Mandarin to justify urself "I want to learn more about China", or otherwise they will lose their interests on u and piss u off.

I don't know much about the mafia thing, but the fact that you hate the other four things about China shows you are becoming more and more like the Chinese -- we hate those things too. The unreliability of guanxi is not just something only foreigners have to face, so is getting your business taken over by your partners. If your business really succeeds in China, the potential financial reward could be enormous, that is why you will be facing tough competition both outside and inside your business. P.S. where is the link you mentioned in the video?

hmm, feels like foreigners are easy to get into that kinda messy lifestyle in China, like living on all the social relationships, government relationships, local mafias and stuffs. Maybe because those local people that seem to be involved in messy affairs need powerful or at least "rare" people like foreigners to boost their position or Guanxi? I dunno, because my parents and their social circles depend on trust and quality of interactions, no one is really fully dependent on each other, so the family, social and business guanxi don't really play huge roles(like even my grandma is out there making her own money). My suggestion for many foreigners trying to connect with the locals is: choose wisely who you want to interact with, you have to know if they truly want to be friends because of your personalities or simply because you are a foreigner.

Been here for 10 years now (as of 2016), and the sound is maddening. I had exactly the same experience as you, in and out of China regarding this. Your experience with the mafia is scary, I had an opportunity once to get to know some influential people and just plain refused to get in any sort of relationship with those guys, I heard things and decided I was better off not getting involved. I have been lucky overall during my time in China, relationship and business-wise, probably because I've been mostly hanging out with Chinese that had actually lived abroad and/or just more wealthy/educated people that had no beef with the west at all in general.

This one is a GOOD video about China. Quite accurate in what happens there in business. You need powerful contacts, help from your Chinese family (re: wife's side) you need to speak, read Mandarin fluently & understand how business works in China. Got to pick the 'right' girl too. Most want marriage just for a foreign passport. You can have a phd from USA & fail. My in law family has TWO very smart sons who have phds who worked for Harvard USA as research scientists & speak English perfectly. Americans think they are smart & they are but you have to be not just smart or powerful but very cunning to succeed in China. They are money wise, tough, merciless & will not give away money or opportunities to the laowhy (foreigners) easily. Under their veil of hospitality they have no time for the laowhy unless you are McDonalds, KFC, CocaCola etc. As the Chinese always shout in competition, that sounds like "jia your" which means Try Harder, & they do! Try harder, try harder! USA

Gary Templemain it's weird that my personal experience says otherwise. You do need a Chinese partner, though. It really depends on which region you are dealing with. The central regions are in general conservative and not as friendly as the coast regions in terms of policy. I would suggest anyone with real capability check the local policy of Jiangsu or Zhejiang province. They used to have good hatching programs for high tech businesses couple years ago, and I am sure they still keep them. Though the regulation is tough.

Gary Templemain In fact, doing business in China not only requires high intelligence but also EQ(Emotional Quotient), Business people are more exquisite and euphemistic. So you have to learn not only skills but also associations with people. The traditional code of conduct plays a huge role between relationships, so yeh, if you want to success in China, it's quite harder than what you expect from Western societies.

Quite a few of these things you mention are... kinda based on where you live in China? For example noise. I've lived in a few cities in Guangdong and now recently moved up to the Northwest and the difference in noise & light pollution is frankly staggering. There are quiet places, where you can enjoy simple things such as the sea breeze for example and it's great. As you know, the PRD is a megalopolis of over 40 million people, It's going to have this crowded, noisy feel wherever you go, whether it be Zhuhai or Huizhou. That's also to say you can't get off the beaten track in Huidong and get out of it all for a while either! Mafia presence as well, very much Guangdong based being so close to the border, same goes with Inner Mongolia, albeit on a more violent level as I'm sure you've seen. Other places in China don't suffer the same sort of control as you will see for example in Huizhou, where Huishadi Yi Lu is lined with money laundering tea houses and like 4 legit stores & some bars. Up in Shandong and Jiangsu, you have to dig to really find these places, which means you go out of your way to find them. I feel like some things such as Guanxi, Finding a girlfriend and business & drinking culture all come with research and some responsibility really. I came out to china with the pre-knowledge that girls would be less casual, drinking culture was all about Ganbei and this country would never be my true home. Quite a few of these I found out about via watching yourself and Winston. A lot of foreigners aren't honest with Chinese girls and it leads to a lot of complications. Either way, thanks for making videos like this, i feel like people should know what they get into when they come to China

@picramide 6 жыл бұрын
Gelm Ssbm your comment about noise and light pollution are spot on. Even in US "flyover country" there are huge differences. By moving a mere 20 km we went from constant noise to nothing but crickets and the occasional distant train whistle.

Suggestions: 1. Noise - bear it, and try to find quiet places when you need. I could always find when I was in China 2. Drinking - definitely avoid drinking alcohol with tons of people. When want to drink, drink with close friends, or clearly tell other people you are not good drinking then they will probably stop persuading you. 3. Mafia - I do not know too much about it. Maybe it is something related to Guanxi? 4. Relationship - typically it should not be a problem. My brother is married in China, but it does not seem he married to her whole family. Maybe you should discuss it with your wife, and say you would like to have more privacy? 5. Guanxi - This is something you will need to deal with. I heard it is changing, now if you want to start a business, less Guanxi is required especially in big cities.

@@leticiamo5202 Everyone did that. Think about how Chinese people (those born in 50s or 60s) behaved during their travels in the Western countries; they are highly self-centered that they wished everybody else would behave like them or accept their behaviors. While in your city I spent 1 day at the hotel with the other Americans there watching the US election results. I also visited the Huizhou Museum, West Lake Park, and a nearby mall to go to a movie. I walked around the central business district, and the area near the hotel. I enjoyed your city a lot. It is beautiful, clean and everyone was very pleasant. The staff at the Renaissance were outstanding. Most spoke English, great food, and very comfortable. Had I run into you I had intended to introduce myself. From Huizhou I took a bus to the Guangzhou South train station from where I traveled to Guangxi. I decided to respect your privacy and consciously didn't contact you. However, you had a profound impact on me......I visited Huizhou. So, thanks for what you do. Also thanks go out to hour wife, Winston, Prozzie and others you have featured in your videos. I hope to return again some day. Huizhou is a wonderful city. I like it too. Rick Shoreline, WA USA

I've done a lot of consulting work throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Asia (China primarily) for multinationals and medium sized companies and the business mindset between the two are very similar. For one, both cultures value appearance over substance, usually to a fault. Spending money, often down to the most minute details, on lavish dinners and meetings is taken as a sign of success. It doesn't matter if the business is bankrupt, about to go bankrupts, or even producing a product. If you don't spend money on useless things to appear successful you'll never make it. There's also a huge emphasis on short vs. long term business planning. This is primarily why foreign run companies fail when handed over to their local counterparts, there's no thought put into what happens next.

The noise drove me so crazy that I left China and never went back. This was after moving into the 4th apartment and again being surrounded by drills and hammers from 6AM til 9PM. If it wasn't people renovating around me, it was construction noise in the area 24 hours a day. The only time I got peace is when I spent 5 months in a sleepy rural city. That was heaven!

Thank you so much for a great video. I'd like to hear you expand more on your last point pertaining to business. Some questions I have are: 1. 8:40 - Do you not pull guanxi during these dinners and "meetings" because such individual meetings are insignificant? 2. 9:20 - Will you not apply for a business license as a foreigner because the barriers are too high and there are drawbacks which citizens do not suffer? 3. 10:16 - I presume you have to put your business into foreign hands because you (one) don't have a local business license and (two) typically don't know the language or customs, however, does the business fail because they do not direct the business properly under the original vision or they are otherwise incompetent? Thanks. I feel I could get away just presuming these things, but I was really curious about this point! :)

Well, let me tell you what my culture invented. Paper, Paper money, Umbrellas, Kites, Tea, Compass, Rudder, Silk, Crossbow, Gunpowder, Steel, Porcelain, Earthquake detectors, jade carving, Kung Fu.[FACTS] Our Emperor's robes were a special shade of yellow. Nobody but the Emperor was allowed to wear that colour. And do you know what that culture was? China. *BOOM*

Ever consider making videos about other Asian countries in the future? I heard that traveling in and out of China is tedious, but either way, it would be a good addition to your content. Also, you should check out some of the art forms in China such as Chinese paper cutting. Although, I'd assume that you'd have to find artists that are able to collaborate interviews with. Stay optimistic and good luck to your film career!

yes, here in some region of northeast China, the population density is not that high, leaving enough space for forest and nice places.I recommend you to visit chang bai mountain in Jilin province, really beautiful landscape and totally different impression, but I totally agree with what you said,I used to live in beijing for quit some time, and I know how it is ,everywhere is people, cars and concrete buildings, very crowed and no privacy,it is how it looks like in big city of China.I also hate it.

Hey @laowai86 the one and only C-milk, always follow your vlogs. I'm a fellow American living in Ningbo, Zhejiang Prov. since 2005. I'd like to share my top 5 hates. 1. Driving culture (gets me in trouble when I'm outside China as I have become accustomed to the 'me me me' Chinese ways) 2. Ice (all of these years I still hate drinking hot water) 3. Dealing with the most local-local-local of government offices (why should I help you attitudes/it's not my problem or department) 4. In-laws ("TMD! My Son, my home, so my ways or get out!" as I did buy a home in the sky, married and with a child now) 5. Other foreigners complaining about the deepest parts of Chinese culture e.g. TCM ( I really get tired of westerners 'English speaking laowai' constantly complaining/comparing cultures... I usually just remind then that there is always the option to leave as you most likely will be forgotten soon.) I'm a friend of a local American vlogger here in Ningbo. Named Matt. His Channel is called the JaYoe Nation Maybe you guys can connect and do something or if you are ever in Ningbo look me up. kzbin.info/door/8Ykci4MKSSdTJYuYp53G7A

I currently live in Huadu in Guangzhou and i WISH the drinking thing existed here!! All i heard about was China's drinking culture, but all our colleagues and friends never drink. We are always clawing at the walls for drinking buddies but we always have to go to bars on our own :(. No idea why it is so different here..

My dad has worked with Chinese businessmen in the past and he told me that dining with them was terrible because of the constant drinking. They always wanted to compete against my dad and see who could drink most. It didn't matter whether dad wanted to drink or not, his interpreter/friend told him that he had to. Many times he ended up puking in toilet only to come back to hear "drink more!". But he was lucky, other than those constant drinking contests, the men he worked with were nice.

I am new to your channel. This was a very interesting and well done video . kudos!! I have been to China twice and I have friends there. A lot of what you say is not a surprise to me but I wasn't really aware about some of the relationship stuff. Why did the school not work out with the really smart, nice people who really knew what they were doing? Is it because local influence crept in and wanted a piece of the business? You have a new subscriber. Thanks

I wish I could have seen some real talk vids like this before I left the US and came to live in China. Especially the part about guanxi. The culture shock China lays on you is literally mindblowing when you first arrive. And the amount of sheer bullshit most foreigners believe when they get here is just amazing. That said, I think no matter where you go you find things you love and things you hate if you stay long enough. And once you leave there will always be things you miss.
