Chinese can't tell the difference between German, American or Russian and lump them all as whites. But to be fair how many Americans can tell the difference between Korean, Japanese or Chinese?

I don't think the idea is to be able to differentiate people based on their appearance - I doubt I'd be able to pick out between, say, Danes, Dutch and Germans, but to appreciate that there are differences between all these different people, instead of lumping them all into one group.

I am bilingual. The response from the Chinese waiter laowhy didn't translate is "I haven't seen Jews before but based on what we learned from the book. Jews are not the smartest, probably same level as us but (I think) they are good business people and know how to make money." This obviously contradicts with the stereotype discussed here.

Nobel Prizes have been awarded to over 850 individuals, of whom at least 22% were Jewish or people of Jewish descent, although Jews comprise less than 0.2% of the world's population (or 1 in every 500 people). Meaning, Jews are clearly not just smart about making money. (By the way, Chinese people make up 20% of the world's population--or 1 in every 5 people--and have won about 1% of the Nobel Prizes). How 'bout them apples, David Chen?

Dudes! This is a pretty good explanation about things with Chinese culture from a Westerners point of view. I was with a friend in Zhongshan that looked Asian but didn't speak any Asian language since he was raised in Europe and noticed he had a totally different experience from local Chinese as well as foreigners! You should do a video on that as well! The Chinese couldn't understand why he never responded to them and when I told them he was Meiguo, that stunned look and silence it drew from the Chinese people was total disbelief. At the same time when he speaks with expats there it's a double take for them.

Many Chinese know much less about Canada than the US, but they generally have extremely positive stereotypes of the Canadians compared to those of the Americans. Due to the Hollywood movies, the most commonly believed stereotypes of Americans by most Chinese especially by the less educated Chinese or the very local Chinese who cannot speak English and never have a chance to travel is that USA always remind them of MONEY, SEX, GUNS and WARS. And it's not just the Chinese people's stereotypes of America, but also the stereotypes of the Americans in many other countries.

I love Canada and visited the major cities in Quebec (Quebec City, Montreal, Trois Rivieres), Ontario (Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls) , New Brunswick (St. John, Moncton, Fredericton), Nova Scotia (Truro, Amherst, Halifax) and Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown). Canada and the States are just as amazing as China although the former are relatively young in history. To tell the truth, I prefer listening to the more heavily accented British English (just like Parisian French or northern Mandarin) than Canadian, American or Australian English. I guess it's more original. American Caucasians are seldom purely German or purely French from my experience of interacting with them. They always have a mix in say one fourth French, one sixteenth Polish, half German, etc., lol. Caucasians in Asian countries are considered just as exotic as Asians in white countries like the States and Canada. Just as Asians often seek to marry Caucasians to pride themselves in, I was told by many Americans that Caucasians often find marrying Asians very cool. To be sure, their offspring often get the best features from both parents inheriting beautiful facial features from the Caucasian parent (beautiful eyes, tall nose) and silky skin from the Asian parent. Many Miss Hong Kong winners (高丽虹,李嘉欣,郭倩妮)or movie stars like Russell Wong and his brother, are Caucasian and Asian mix offspring. Btw, Jews 犹太人and oriental people are all descendants of Shem, one of Noah's three sons (Shem, Ham, Japheth), that survived the Flood, and thus are all semitic. Not to spread any religion here, but we Chinese have worshiped the same God 上帝 or 天 as the God of the Bible (of Jews and Christians) for almost 2000 years before the advent of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism 儒释道 which came right in the middle of the 5000 years of Chinese history timeline (around 600 - 500 B.C.). So it's only natural to worship 上帝 that the ancient Chinese like 黄帝 Yellow Emperor or 炎帝 Emperor Yan or Laozi or Confucius have worshiped than to believe in Buddhism (from India) or Confucianism (Confucius was just a person, not God), although it might surprise you that the Dao 道 in Daoism is actually Jesus Christ Himself as Laozi 老子 was prophesying the coming of the Dao (the Way as in 道路, the Principle or Word as in 道理,or to speak as in 说道, with all three meanings pointing to the character of Jesus Christ) in Dao De Jing 道德经。That's a whole rabbit to chase which I will elaborate on more if you are interested in. So yeah, from the standpoint of genetics (Punnett Square, dominant and recessive genes, alleles, etc.), I am sure Olivia is going to be another Miss Hong Kong or Miss Chinese International winner, aka, exceptional beauty! God bless! =)

It's really no different anywhere. It's just the severity of the stereotype from people all over the world. I was born in a big city in Texas, but overseas, they think we are all cowboys. I haven't been to China yet, but Japan and the Philippines also had common misconceptions of foreigners in general. I'm sure it's common all over the globe. These videos help us get acquainted with a different culture before we actually get there.

I am Chinese, I get same type of stereotype in UK as well. It is hard for Western ppl to identify Asians as they can not identify whether an Asian is from China Japan or Korea. It is the same for Asians, for example I can recognise the difference between an American and a Russian, but I can not see the difference between A Scandinavian person and a British person or a German unless they speak their own language infront of me. BTW, China is a huge country, just like the US and CANADA, northern Chinese actually look like a different race with the southerners, you will realize this when you live in China for a Long time...
@hwen36159 жыл бұрын
CMilk, I think open means in a good way when Chinese people say it, they try to say some good thing about you but actually knowing nothing about you or where you from. I think open originated from 1987 where Deng XiaoPing opened up the market, so open is a positive but not specific means.

I'm Canadian and have studied in France. Even well educated French people don't really draw any cultural differences between Canadian and Americans. Until I lived in France i never knew I would simply be identified as an anglo saxon as opposed to continental european culture. Then again until I lived in France I didn't know the great cultural difference found in different french regions which is true of most european countries. Same is true of most countries but even the larger european countries are pretty small.

Great video guys -- I used to live in Colombia and know the ex-pat drill -- or at least I think I do. I'm heading to China again and pleased to have another opportunity to ride the ride. After viewing some ex-pat videos warning against a recent rise in anti-foreign sentiment (in China), I smiled to myself knowing my country wrote the book on fearing and mistreating strangers. China has a long way to go before they achieve such heights of xenophobia. A smile opens a world of doors -- yes, one must practice common sense, but being a dick is never good practice or form. The human community can be pretty grand if you let it out in the open air. You gents seem to be doing just fine with a generous portion of humor!

We don't chide people for being rich in the UK. Here it's considered very rude to ask how much money somebody has or how successful somebody is. You can often tell by the way people behave and look what kind of upbringing they had. We don't hate people for having more than us, we just don't talk about those kinds of things. A rich person will often have a good upbringing, therefore they would generally be quite polite and wouldn't flaunt of show off their wealth.

I knew a Chinese girl in Qingdao, who liked to sing songs in English, but would change the lyrics to make them funny. Her, me, a British friend and another Chinese girl once walked into the lobby of an international hotel in Qingdao and she was loudly singing "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, but she changed the lyrics to: "Hey Ju (Chinese for pig, apparently, but pronounced like Jew), don't be afraid! I'll take a big knife and make a stew out of you!" as we were walking by a group of Orthodox Jews in full attire (black hat, long, curly sideburns and all that). She was totally oblivious and had no idea why those strange men were looking at her weirdly, or why we (the British buddy and me) had to fight hard to not burst out laughing.

From an outsider's perspective i.e. from outside the US and Britain or another English-speaking country, American and British culture would be very similar since Britain spawned the US and British culture was the dominant culture which caused immigrants from other European countries to conform to it.
