I was staying in the Olomouc Region, and going to Prague is really easy and I was travelling back and forth to Prague and back to Olomouc for several times. About service in Czech language vs. English: Some Czechs are complaining that in the center, the waiters are actually not serving locals, only foreigners (English-speakers). I liked the last part about not being able to leave, I was planning to stay here only one year. - it's been 7 years now. :) Like Franz Kafka said: "Prague never lets you go. Friend, just a gentle comment from somebody older who travelled and worked all over the world: I would never use the word "hate" in such a context like in your video. Taken literally, it is neither adequate nor fitting. and sound rather harsh and unpolite when talking about some country or a nation in general, - esp. when you are a foreigner. Yes, I know that many people are only able to use a "love-hate" vocabulary/attitude, but it's neither correct nor smart. English has more adequate and gentle words to describe something less favorable or even unpleasant. Let me also add that most of your observations are rather specific to Prague center, which is not a good representative for the CR as a whole. Anyway, best wishes!

2 days in the touristic area means you have an extremely superficial view of the country. Plus, the price of beer isn't a valid way to assess a country. Come here for a few weeks or months, really get to know the place and visit outside Prague 1/2, then you'll realise that 1) Czechs are really rude a lot of the time, in fact Czechs think Czechs are damn rude. Customer service sucks, though it has improved a lot. 2) yes, the historical buildings look nice in the centre, try visiting Palmovka or Haje. 3) beer is cheap in cheap places, however, most other drinks can be overpriced and the cost of living in Prague is quite high, while wages for many don't reflect that. But hey, your 2 day insight into the city obviously makes you an expert.
@mdtorres_762 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert and unfortunately cannot stay for few weeks. Just stating what I observe based from my 2-day visit and people I met/chat/spoke with. This is my opinion. Is it wrong to express what I felt, experienced, and how happy am I & appreciate Prague and the people? Well, it is okay to state your reply or opinion too, but that doesn't mean you need to attack the person who commented.

I think we are not cheap but other countries are very overpriced. For example when I was in Portugal, half liter of beer in restaurant was for 4 or 5 eur, but such prices are not coresponding with their salaries, same in Latvia where they have even lower salaries than we have so it's just overpriced in other countries. Czechs are used to spend their money carefuly and sellers and services know that increasing of prices = Czechs will not buy anything, but in most of places they can't live only from tourism so they can't piss off all native people. Ofcourse there are places with 100% touristic prices, but most of shops and restaurants are trying to find some compromise between our prices and prices for tourists. It looks like in other countries (even in countries with lower salaries) companies don't care about native people and they target only on tourists which is sad because people can't even go for beer in their country to pub. In Germany many things are more expensive (that's logical) but shopping can be actually even cheaper than here so not all countries are terribly overpriced like France, Italy or Spain. And Scandinavia...that's ridiculously overpriced, but they at least see that money from taxes on roads and other public places. Customer service is not terrible, it's just cultural difference, good waiter should ask what you want and bring it to you, not trying to start conversation with you and wasting your time with stories which I don't care about. :-D When I am in different country, I feel not comfortable because of that customer service when someone is constantly asking if everything is ok every few minutes and such things, I hate that, I don't know what to say as answer, what do they expect I say? "No, it wasn't ok, I want my money back?" I know it's cultural thing so I am trying to be polite, but it's frustrating for Czech. Also when tourists here are trying to speak Czech, that's very uncomfortable, because I really don't understand what they trying to say, but I want to be polite and not correct them, but I need to know what they want from me so after few seconds of fake smiling I have to ask if they can say it in English. :-D PS: Average salary is not good marker, western Europe has very strong difference between average and median (because of more milionares), so I believe common people from France or Germany are not so rich as many Czech believe and we are not so poor as we believe.

I learn Czech but not very confident yet, so I order in English - sorry, but saying hi and thank you is I think a good idea always. I live close to the boarder and plan to move permanently. Your salaries as not as high as westerners but much higher then ours unfortunately and food in restaurants is cheaper, groceries also overpriced competing eg to Germany. I work in hospitality in the Uk and know exactly what you mean with their customer service, but being polite is fine and I think Czech customer service is much better then polish which I absolutely hate.

@@secretgarden1218 I was in Poland 3 times for vacation and I didn't see anything wrong there, customer service was ok, prices similar, actually some things are cheaper, like coffee from starbucks, KFC and such things, twister from KFC cost something like 65 Kč in Poland, but 110 here in Czechi, I was very surprised by that, yout shops and shopping centers also have better products and more sizes for cloths because you are bigger market, they don't care about some little Czech Republic, we have to buy many things from other countries, when I wanted original Levis jeans in smaller size, I had to order it from UK etc....sometimes life here is really frustrating when you are smaller than average Czech and you even can't find cloths for you. :-D If you want to move to Czechia, you should know about that massive anti polish campaing which is here few years becuase of polish truck drivers staying on train crossing and waiting for death and poor food from Poland. But as I said, it's only propaganda because first thing - Czech drivers are also terrible, but it's not so interesting for media show Czech driver caused accident with train and second thing - food in Poland is actually better than here, but our companies are ordering poor food form Poland on purpose because they know Czech will eat every shit. :-D

'90s Prague was the best. Since then, it seems like Prague has become somewhat Americanized. It still has some charm, but I think the reason many foreigners move to Prague, especially from the US, is because it's culturally accessible. Also the whole drinking thing seems to be getting old. Yeah, we get it, Czech drink a lot of beer. Their president is basically an alcoholic, and embarrasses himself on national TV. And then there's that whole seedy porn industry in Czech, and the drunken Brits and Germans goose-stepping all over like they own the place. If I moved to CZ, I don't think I could stand living in Prague for more than a year, maybe two. I'd much rather live on the outskirts, or a smaller city like Pribram. I can understand why a lot of Czechs living outside of Prague consider Praguians to not be "real" Czechs; even the way the Praguians speak the language is criticized heavily by those living outside of Prague.

"customer is always right" is a mis-translation, the issue is simply being polite, courteous and respectful to someone who comes into your place of business offering to leave you money in return for a pleasant service. If you cannot treat me respectfully then my money will go to a business that is able to behave in a humble and respectful way, you will then be at full free will to go enjoy yourself in any manner you seem fitting.

And you don't know what that person gone through and if he's going to kill himself today so if he's suicidal do you think he's gonna give a shit about smelling good? Sometimes small things like a smile or a small talk can mean a lot to a person and maybe change them or make their day. I don't think anyone likes to smell bad but they can't shower everyday like we do and when they see people moving away from them I can't imagine how hurt and rejected they feel. Please try to be nice to people and maybe it's hard to sit next to them but it'll mean a lot to them if u be nice cuz they are not used to kindness and be treated like humans. Going to countries like Switzerland is I would say almost impossible because your money is just not going to be enough. The drunk and loud people that's another thing. I dont live in Prague but it also happens here where I live. Alcohol here is cheap and there's a lot of drunk people and you dont want to watch a drunk person laying on a bench in a park that is just vomiting everywhere or just being loud and aggressive. Also one of the things you didnt mention is drug dealing. Czechia is well known for drugs a lot of drugs in Europe is from Czech Republic so we don't have the best reputation. I think Czechia can be a great place to live because we have a lot of places tourists can visit. The nature here is also not so bad so as every country it has it's pros and cons.

Czech republic is one the most expensive countries in Europe. Property prices in Prague are equivalent to Zurrich in Switzerland 🇨🇭 however the salaries are 3 times lower than Switzerland. There are hundreds of international companies here looking for cheap high skilled labour.
@alexanderka19563 жыл бұрын
The salary you mentioned I'd average only for Prague, go to any other city and that number drops dramatically, for example you could have the same job I the same exact industry and make 50.000czk in Prague but go to any other city and that 50.000czk(2.000€) becomes 20.000czk(800€) if you're lucky and if not then it can be as low as 16.000czk(650€) and although I understand that different cities have different prices it's really not according to the prices of housing and food because in Prague you can make twice the amount of money from other cities but you pay around 30-60% more for housing so it's still better to live and work in Prague where salaries are higher and everything is available from shopping anything you want to having the best doctors in Czech Republic minutes away from you. And you also save more money and can go visit other countries much easier. For example I worked in a small tourist city called karlsbad or karlovy vary and the housing prices are high due to the city being a tourist destination but the salaries are actually really low, like making 5€/hr is considered a good salary, which gives you (5€*40/week*4weeks= 800€) but finding an affordable accommodation which is also decent is unreal, you either pay around 300-350€ for a small studio with all bills included unless you spend more water/heat/electricity/gas(if there is) then you have to pay the difference so it can be more than just that amount and for food depending on how lavish you want to be it can cost you anywhere from 150-200€ a month up to 300€ a month. And if you actually want to live in a normal two room apartment you have to pay at least 450-500€ a month including bills meaning you have just money left for food and then you also need to consider paying for Internet about 15€ phone credit 10-20€ depending on how much you use it transportation also depending if you want your own or use public for public 15€ a months is enough for car it's more especially if you include annual maintenance, also I would imagine people want to go out for a drink so basically to live alone and put aside money even on 800€ a month is unreal.

We ALL CZECHS agree with you 100%. It might sound better to say: "What would I change in Bohemia, Czechia, Czech Republic." For example: Czech state CREATED homeless people by deregulation of rents, but gives ZERO option for homeless people to have a shelter. Our country is so small, that e.g. with social help of the army,even homeless people could live OK and clean. Even some trams could be for homeless people only (with shower, WC, basic food). But the Czech politicians maybe doesn't see it as a problem ...

@@Davud_Akh Great to have you here too. You know for sure, that our Kingdom Bohemia has NEVER ever had any colonies (in fact we had been 3 times a colony of other states for 348 years before 1989) and thanks to it we treat foreigners like new friends and not like slaves ... But I am sure, that history of our Czech Kingdom Bohemia (now Czechia, Czech Republic) is known . It's only a pity, that our politicians are too shy to keep reminding West about these facts ... Wish you ever success 👍 Have a nice stay in Kingdom of Bohemia, Great Moravia, Samo's Empire, Czech Celtic Empire, Czechia, Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic = our name has kept changing, but it's still the same peaceful state which has never had any colonies and has ever never attacked foreigne countries ...

Problem is, that for last 3 decades any of the Czech politicians has NOT been seriously trying to find shelters for people, who can NOT pay overcharged rents for an appartment !!! Shocking discovery is the fact, that during lockdown all CZECH and MORAVIAN schools were empty and for example in school gyms thousands of homeless people could be accomodated in a civilised way !!! Czech army and volunteers could help there and homeless people could recover easily there and start helping others too 👍 But if Czechia is getting nearer to a Banana Republic, than its politicians look more after their "pockets" and their money, than looking after people, who urgently need help !!! 🤔🙄🙄🙄🤔😥😡

So, what are you doing here, if you don’t like it? I am American/Czech, visited 60 countries, and lived in 7, last years mostly in Spain. Everyone knows that Prague is a “washing machine” for naïve foreigners. Most prices with exception of beer, cigarettes, are relatively comparable to Germany. The same thing is almost everywhere in all tourist hubs in the world with relatively low wages. Taking advantage of foreigners. In Prague, prices are generally far higher than in other parts of the country. The major problem is still the communist mentality and the current super corrupt ex-communist government. Especially, the older generation. As far as transportation is far better and modern compare to disgusting transport like in most USA, expl. Boston, New York, and some other places. Yes, services generally suck in Czech. How about the homeless in London, Spain, the USA...... 100x worse! Lots of homeless in Czech are not Czech, but foreigners. From Ukraine, and other Eastern countries.

-Czech roads, specially Prague city center and surroundings. Lots of potholes, bumps. You dodge one but you get another one. Yet not suitable for new cars. -You're right about services in public places, try your chance at governmental places :) I even get the response like "jsme v České republice a potřebujeme mluvit česky" -You're also right about bad smells in public transportation. Its not all about homeless people only, the person who uses a lot perfumes over sweaty body or even worse armpits. I stopped using public transportation since 2018.
@jakubp.69874 жыл бұрын
Its always good to get those feedback from foreigns. :) And most things you mention actualy piss citizens too. But those problems came from mutch bigger beneffits. Like those smells homeles in public transportation. Reason why are they there is that public transportation tickets /payments are based on public trust. The 24/7 drunken foreign partys in Prag centr also means tons of money to local business ond so on. On the other hand, things like bad customer service are made mostly from bad sallary in this industry. You mention average sallary is 34.000KČ but average sallary for waitress or saleswomann is 24.000 (in Prag) before taxes.

@Davud_Akh4 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely these can be the reasons :)
@MrToradragon4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that it can be attributed to 40 years of communism anymore, but rather to general frustration and perhaps as well to different concepts and rules that Czech language is based on. As well it depends on where you go, whether is it small shop or supermarket. You can't expect "American attitude" in supermarkets, not in Czech Republic nor in Germany, people simply will not smile on command, yet it is common to meet plenty of friendly shop owners.
