The Eidolons can be extremely powerful when used correctly, which I was able to do with ease, even reaching around 999,999 damage several times without the Genji Glove. And such high damage is inflicted on every enemy on the field. Like the playable characters, the Eidolons' damage output depends on many factors, including the summoner's role levels, status enchantments you give them, status ailments you inflict on enemies, the chain gauge percentage, and more. Or you could focus greatly on one or two of these factors. For instance, I tend to focus on chain percentage when using Odin, since Zantetsuken instantly kills most enemies with a chain around 900%. Thanks to Lightning's agility as a spellcaster and attacker, I could easily get several enemies to sit at that chain percentage. I do the same with Snow, because he's the fastest spellcaster. Sazh is the slowest, in case you were wondering. Since all the factors I listed earlier apply to the playable characters, I knew it would apply to the Eidolons as well. If I had my Eidolon footage uploaded on my channel, I would've liked to show you how to properly utilize these majestic beings. They are beautiful and, in my opinion, some of the best summons in the series. But I will say, aside from superbosses, the Eidolons don't serve much of a purpose once my characters have maxed out their Crystarium. Before that, I looked forward to turning a fight that would last at least fifteen minutes into thirty seconds or so, thanks to the Eidolons. But by the end, most enemies die quickly, unless I equip those weapons that significantly decrease my strength and magic, which wouldn't affect any of the factors I listed. So, I advocate for a Hard Mode and New Game+. Despite that, I still have fun summoning Brynhildr. Changing her attack element using Sazh's En- spells, especially when she has Haste, satisfies me. Since she's already the fastest Eidolon, she can go from setting enemies on fire to freezing them in a heartbeat, or I could have her blast them all away with a thunderstorm or a flood. I see why she was paired with the overall slowest character in the game. But I'll never sideline Sazh. What am I, the Final Fantasy XIII sequels? No. He's very fun to play with. If I had to say something negative about the Eidolons, it would be that the Role Bonuses are locked whenever an Eidolon is present. For instance, if I had the Protection Paradigm (SYN/SYN/SYN), the Role Bonus (increase duration of status enchantments) will not take effect. While I get the reasoning behind this design choice, I'm saddened by its results. The game's still fun, though. Okay. I see why you would prefer having Lightning, Fang, and Hope make up your party. Honestly, a solid team. But I don't believe they're objectively the best team. I've used several different combinations in several different places. All have their merits. No team is unbalanced. All teams are valid. My primary team isn't Lightning, Fang, and Hope, you see. I believe players can easily get away with any team and be just as successful, if they use it correctly. The game's fanbase has proved this. I think some players have Lightning, Fang, and Hope as their team because they're mandatory for an entire chapter, and prove their worth in that time. But the "problem" I found with them is: there isn't much they can specialize in. Final Fantasy XIII's combat is designed more for synergy rather than quantity. Yes, Lightning, Fang, and Hope do have every ability. However, they don't get many, if any, abilities that synergize with one another until late in the game. The early hours of the game highlights this synergy by pairing two characters who have great synergy. Team Sazh and Vanille is a great example. Vanille has Deprotect, Deshell, and Imperil, while Sazh has Bravery, Faith, and the En- spells. Pair those two together, especially against an elemental enemy like Phase one Barthandelus, and you have a brutal team. I fought Barthandelus with Lightning, Fang, and Hope. Then I fought him with Lightning, Sazh, and Vanille. The difference in play shocked me. I do actually have footage of Lightning, Sazh, and Vanille fighting Phase one Barthandelus on my channel. I beat him with only two Paradigms. Give it a watch, if you're interested. The perfect synergy between characters is endless in this game. Someday, I'll upload a video of Hope, Lightning, and Snow fighting Cid Raines. What a fight that was. I believe Lightning, Fang, and Hope are great for players who want a less risky, more safe approach to the game, which is absolutely fine. They may also find the party appealing because they're not setting up Paradigms as frequently as one might do for other parties. Or maybe they just like the characters. Any reason is acceptable in my eyes. Honestly, this party reminds me of Lightning herself. It's perfectly balanced, like she is. And we must show her some love. That's all from me. I hope I explained myself well enough. I promise I'm not hating on your approach or anything; I don't like telling Final Fantasy XIII fans how to play. Enjoy the game and play it however you wish. Every fan's approach is valid. Good video, as always. I wish you well. Happy holidays.

Awesome analysis and info here with great points! I honestly didn't know about a lot of this and thank you for informing me! But I think what I meant to say, which I should have done a better job at in the video, is that the game doesn't really push you to use the eidolons and almost incentivizes you not to while you're playing through the main story. I feel like the Eidolons are more for experimenting and wanting to change your gameplay style. Basically meaning that you had to go out of your way to find uses for the eidolons. But as you explained, once you do, it's very rewarding! For the "optimal" team bit, I think more so what I meant was that the game pushes you to use Lightning, Fang, and Hope as your team. Which again, I should have done a better job at explaining that in the video. Again, as you explained, there are other team combinations that work very well together and really you can put anyone together and have it be effective. Which is great and probably super rewarding when you make your preferred team combination! However, I just don't like that the game is basically pushing the "standard" team to the forefront. But thank you for the comment and the love! Wish you well, and Happy Holidays!!

While using the Eidolons are cool, they don't get to shine as much due to (in my opinion) two primary reasons. 1) Costing 3/5 TP to summon. TP doesn't fully replenish like HP after battle and if it's early in game - you won't get to summon for a while , unless you use an item to restore TP. Compare this to Final Fantasy X where it costs you zero to summon. 2) Eidolons have a time limit before going bye-bye, so we as the user, can't get a "long/engaging" experience with them because we have to anticipate switching to Gestalt mode before the timer runs out. Compare this to FFX, where the summons stays unless killed or you dismiss. By adding these constraints, it takes away the value of having a summon on the field. I've played through 13 more than I can count and I almost never use the Eidolons other than as a shield to escape a Game Over. I still think Lightning, Fang, and Hope are arguably the best team from a objective perspective (Once you get to Gran Pulse) for just the sake of a smooth playthrough. As Fang has the highest strength, Hope has the highest Magic + has all elemental spells up to the -Ga tier, and Lightning is versatile as Commando and Ravager. Fang eventually gets Deprotect & Shell and Hope eventually gets the Enspells + Haste - so Sazh and Vanille get outclassed due to the former 2 having a higher Strength and Magic. I can only see Snow replacing Lightning as he's the fastest spellcaster and less squishy. Post-game and super bosses like the Long Guis , in my opinion are where you truly get to experiment with different team combinations. But for general playthrough, L F & H, are excellent.

I love your videos because they really help me process how I feel about FFXIII. It’s a deeply flawed FF game but it’s it’s also the one that stuck with me the most due to the intensity of its story (the completely hopeless situation the characters are in and them being constantly on the run from everybody, even if that was partly because the technical limitations of the game precluded towns and open environments) the strangeness of its world and its lore, which often seemed anchored in dream logic as much as real world logic, and the beautiful haunting score. The sequels fixed many of the first game’s gameplay flaws while doubling down on the strangeness. I hope it gets a re-release or a remake some day because it deserves more recognition.

I am fighting an urge to play 13 again. Even though I’ve already platinum the game. I am playing through LR right, but the paradigm battle system is just so fun in regular/base 13.

100% agree with all the points that were made. You addressed the main reasons that this game is so unfriendly to the newcomer or traditional FF fan. That's why I don't judge FF13 Critics that drop the game if they've actually made it past a couple of chapters (at least as far as Nautilus). It's fair considering how much the game asks of the player upfront for a payout that is tens of hours away. I was lucky enough to have the motivation to stick with it and ended up loving the entire trilogy It was a blessing this game didn't come out earlier because without guides for the story and weapon system, I'd assume most folks would be lost, me included 🤣 But once I read the datalogs and got a good understanding of the component-upgrade loop everything fell into place. Never even knew there was a "best party." I used Fang, Light, and Vanille every chance I could since I used debuffs more than magic or Synergist Buffs. But that's the cool thing about this game, you can use whoever pretty much you want and be ok for the Main Story. There are a few challenge run channels who can do things with this battle system that I never even thought was possible, they really show what this game is capable of when its firing on all cylinders

The difficulty spikes in ff13 are insane. Just when you think your getting good you get stuck on a boss fight that feels cheap. FF13 doesn't explain the leveling system very well or how the Crystarium works. Theirs alot of posts and forums of people that ask how do you get pass X boss or how stuff works in the game.

My course of action was to not upgrade anything until chapter 11 but nowadsys I find it's worthwile to do accesory upgrades for things thst boost stats and physical defense. Since they are useful all the time while for weapons you might want to wait to own them all first so you can choose which weapon to upgrade to it's final tier. Because you can't upgrade all weapons at the same time. Only one per character. So choose wisely which effect id worth. I think I've only gotten the ultimate weapons once in my many playthroughs. Cause I barely do end gsme and I never platinumed this game on ps3 before it died on me. And on PC I'm not interested in doing 100% for these games. But it's great to have 6 atb bars

I'm enjoyin the shorter content, here. Not sure I could take another 50 min video E: I feel like this game and 15 wont get remade, despite being fundamentally sound and interesting, but lacking balance somewhere. If 13s theme was escaping fate, and 15's was brotherhood, it seems as if FF16 captured up both of those themes and closed them out. I don't think they need to spend more time on 13 when they could go and make 17, and bring the best ideas from 15 and 13 into that future. 13: Death 15: The Devil 16: The Tower 17: The Star

I have a few more problems with the first game, most of them fixed in the second: - Impossibly annoying to upgrade other crystariums that are not the three ones you obtain at first. - PArt y leader dies, everyone dies. - Paradigm Shift having a insanely long and annoying animation that makes you lose three seconds while enemies are fucking you over. - There's no Dash button. - There's literally no way to buy items that makes you invisible allowing you to skip battle. Once you used them it['s over. - There's no way to avoid battles, given how tight the corridores are and how much faster they are than you. - There`s not much variety in NPCs because you're always running, but making sure Pulse is devoid of humans is the most horrible choice they could ever have done. There are more technical issues, all of them coulod be fixed on a re-release, frankly if they ever do, let's make a petition for them to literally port the combat from 13-2 into 13 because there is the best way of experiencing the system. 13-3 LR to me has mostly two problems, one of them is how rushed it feels on everything, including side-quests, and the second one is how unfinished the game feels graphicwise, it feels we got the beta version because they did want to just wrap it up. That's one of the worst things Square usually do every now and then.
