hampshirephoto the accelerator pedal has a kick down feature (mimics changing down in a manual If say you need to overtake), as do all dual clutch or auto cars, it’s only like that in D or S, if you put it in manual mode it doesn’t do it, the brake being all or nothing as you describe is adjustable via coding with VCDS, the assist can be set at strong normal or weak, this doesn’t effect the brake performance but will allow a more linear input on the brake pedal that will make it feel less abrupt! Orange peel effect on car paint (new paint in particular and not just VW) is normal/common, as you say, take the car to a good detailer and they will turn it into a glass like finish for you, a good compound polish will get most of it out but the only real way is to wet sand and that can be risky if not done by someone experienced!.

The accelerator pedal thing isn't exclusive to the golf R, it's on all of the other golfs aswell. You need to understand it's purpose dude. The idea is that you get about max 80% throttle during normal driving, in fuel saving modes etc but at anytime if you want the full power you can press the pedal harder to get full power of the engine at anytime no matter what mode you are in, sports, eco whatever... The obvious benefit is power without messing about changing modes, I think it's a rather good idea, once you know it's purpose you will figure out how to best use it... That is why it down shifted for you to give you max power

Regarding the holes in the bumper... Your dealership did that. When you buy one, and they need to bring it into the dealer, just tell them not to drill the bumper during the pdi. All the local dealers here in Vancouver Canada don't even mount the front plate without the buyer saying to do so. Everyone here uses either tow hook mounts or other brackets that side mount. I took the bumper off and put a bunch of neo magnets on the inside, allows me to be legal and take it off for shows.

As i can tell from your young apperance, you have not drove alot of cars. meaning you have no clue how a (turbo)car works (manual or dsg)! The Golf R starts to deliver its 400NM torque from 2000rpm on up to 5400rpm. under 2000rpm the turbo is not spooling up, meaning the full power(torque) is not being produced. While crusing lets say at 90mph with the dsg in 7th gear, the revs are around 1500rpm. When you floor the car, your telling the car "i need to go fast, now!". The car knows the that the only way i am going to be able to speed up quickly, is i am going to need more power(torque). the only way to do so i am going to need at least 2000rpm, so ill need to shift down first! Your braking issue with the golf R, also has to do with inexperience!

This phenomenon not only applies to the Golf R, it applies to all combustion cars! James Barlow spend 7.5R or even 7R money on a Mk4 R32 and you’ll have a faster car. Depends on what the person wants really. Rather a fairly rare car made even rarer by a 500+ setup than a pretty common car. Its what i’d do any day. The R is a better car to live with day to day. And 15 years between the models they’ve come along really far.
@Bazgti2506 жыл бұрын
@@nomessininc. You could say that about any car though. I owned a Mk4 Anniversary years ago and my current 6R batters it in every way regardless of how fast i could make a Mk4. With an old engine, old tech on a tired and dated looking model that the avg person cant use daily because of the ridiculous fuel economy and high road tax (uk) Big turbo or charger on a 32 is a proper but pointless motor. My 2 penny's worth anyway. Each to their own.
@nomessininc.6 жыл бұрын
James Barlow yeah my point exactly pal. Technology has moved on so comparing the mk4 r32 and mk7 r is a fairly un balanced one. As we said depends on what the person is wanting.

I have a mk7 golf gt and it has the accelerator pedal limiter. Always wanted to know what it was. I figured it out. When you put your speed limiter on to 70 so you don't exceed 70 and you want to overtake someone, instead of turning the limiter off and going for the overtake, you plant your foot past the accelerator limit thing and over take.

I found your comments valid and glad you made the video. Keep it up. I had a civic type R ep3 the ride was fidgety constantly bouncing. Radio was terrible. Sound was terrible. Headlights at night was terrible. It wheelspins far too easily. A people carrier could beat you in a race on a wet road. As soon as I accelerated wheelspin again.having to Struggle to reach the seatbelt that was miles away. There was more but you get the idea.

How much fuel (liter) takes your golf r at 100 km if you drive "normal" ?
@andrewmontague26366 жыл бұрын
Hey, I’ve got a 7.5R, bought it in March and I absolutely love the car. I understand your comment re the appearance from the rear, however I think that’s part of this car’s appeal- that it’s really subtle. A45 and other cars like Civic Type R look a bit garish to me. If you want a spoiler though, take a look at the Oettinger one. Brakes are a little grabby at low speeds, you just have to be really gentle and “feather” the pedal as you stop. Accelerator limiter is normal, many cars I’ve driven over the years have them. Orange peel look to paint is a VW issue.. The original finish on my Mk5 GTI was better than on the new car..

I'm oldskool and prefer non virtual clocks, which version golf r going backwards still has normal dials (preferably an estate/wagon), i like the dsg, but not a deal breaker if i had 6 speed manual as im not lazy (or seeking 0-60 times every time i turn the key).

Make sure you upgrade the standard security. As in the West Midlands cars are getting stolen day and night especially Audi's, Golf's and Mercedes.

@styles2345 жыл бұрын
It shifts you down because if you're in that high of a gear and have that much demand from your throttle, then you are essentially lugging the engine and that's bad for it. Smart for VW to do this actually. If you need more acceleration, downshift :)

Hrm in North America they mess with a few other (fixable) things. Center console is locked shut (ordered latch mechanism/arm rest for ~200 from EU), no spare tire (order s3 spare) - no decent place to put your phone (ddock solves that), no homelink/garage remote - apex opener. No heated steering wheel, no headlight washers, no seat side bolster adjustment, no folding side mirrors, no memory seats. Lane assist is useless so that was off right away. That all said there isn't another car other than maybe an RS4 that competes. STI, RS, Evo, all worse - I love this car and driving it every day is fantastic. Oh, 1 big "wtf" with the R - there is no washer fluid sensor - when it runs out, it just runs out. The sensor is not installed and can't be retrofitted. So check it frequently.

Hey, great video. some valid points. Unfortunately some sit behind a keyboard and type away because there are no consequences for their actions. With that said I have a 15 GTI S MK7. I love the car, looks but I also have some gripes with it. I can relate to the orange peel paint, its something I never got around to address it. I am currently looking at a new vehicle and the GOLF R is one of the options, however its kind of disappointing VW US offer pretty much 0 options. There are 40 million paint options to choose from, but no remote start, no alcantara seats, no fog lights, you are right the rear is missing a different spoiler something subtle but slightly aggressive. A front lip, an aggressive blacked out exhaust. These are just ideas I thought about the Golf R is the top Dog on the Golf Line up. Ignore the hate mate.

About your comment regarding pedal travel, I know it's a DSG but that's only a glorified automatic and all auto gearboxes have a kick down, ie when you put your foot to the floor it drops a gear lower or two, Maybe that's what you feel?

I have a 7 speed auto DSG like gearbox with paddles in my Mercedes A class A220 and that in manual literally allows you to floor it in any gear from 1st to 7th and in 7th you feel you're in a high gear there's no kick down, it will change up though if you bounce off the limiter for a couple of seconds

Pedal issues are fair play - it's non linear, but this can be adjusted with OBDEleven or VCDS to be linear. To get rid of dead spot at start you need a pedalbox.

i just got a 7.5 in the pearl white and dont see any orange peel or haziness in the paint. the brake pedal "issue" makes me feel like im driving a race car. the understated nature of the design is what drew me to it.... traded in a mk6 drivers edition (which was great) but now feel like i have 3 times the car. i love mine....

My guess of the jerkiness at start and stopping is the clutch engaging and disengaging. Coming to a stop with brake on, dsg clutch disengages engine, same brake force but forward force gone= jerk. Reverse applies when starting off from stand still.
@MATTEEHH6 жыл бұрын
The kickdown is something you will get used to not hitting that point unless just stamping all the time. as for the brakes being grabby what you could be experiencing is the cars auto hold feature it can be grabby at very low speeds as it thinks you are coming to a stop to applies rear brake for you.
@Wolfpounder5 жыл бұрын
the only 2 things that are wrong with this car, are. 1: the rain sense wipers, this is a garbage feature, they don't work correctly. 2: you didn't buy the manual. DON'T BUY PERFORMANCE CARS IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN MANUAL. THEY AREN'T FUN WITHOUT A MANUAL.
@SPTSuperSprinter1565 жыл бұрын
with it jolting slightly when you brake, my guess is that up until you are almost coming to a complete stop the engine is still pushing slightly against the braking effort via the clutch. then when you're down to the last mph or so it will disengage the clutch and so suddenly the applied braking effort is enough to bring the car to a sudden-ish stop. no idea if that's true or not but it would seem logical based on my experiences elsewhere. even with normal torque converter automatics I find them challenging sometimes to bring to a completely smooth stop at low speeds because of the car's wish to eternally creep forward.

i do totally agree with every single thing you have pointed out... I do own a golf, not the R verstion but a 150HP DSG and I find your points fit exactly what i experience. Dont care about haters comments - people are simply jelaous and get too emotional, they can not understand intelectually derived arguments, expecially when they dont have the experience of the car as you do. TK and greetings from poland

i actually agree with this. When you own a car you see things differently to when you aspire to own one. I have a 2018 55 Tfsi A7 and have about 8 gripes even tho the car is fantastic. Agree ref the paint especially. And my display does show my car in the correct colour.

Have you tried a pedal box ? Seems ideal for that massive dead spot laying into it
@MotionPlays6 жыл бұрын
That unwanted kick down sounds annoying, my BMW does the same if you have it in Sport manual mode, but if it's in Sport+ manual mode the car will not change down even if you do hit that 'kick down' spot on the pedal, and will hit the limiter if you don't change up.

My opinion about your points 1. Golf r doesn’t need a ridiculous spoiler to cheapen its look. It has a clean look as is 2. Must be a cost containment thing having a different car for every infotainment system. Personally think they should get rid of all these type of graphics of the car 3. I think the auto down shift is to prevent the engine from bogging 4. Found the same thing with the brakes. Wear them in a bit more and I think it will resolve 5. Agree with imperfect paint. Take all my new cars to my Detailer for paint correction. Often just needs a proper polish and ceramic coating to finish it off 6. You can get a smash repairer to fill in the holes and respray the bumper or just buy a new one and get it painted
@psiturbo Жыл бұрын
I jumped in a few Golf Rs, I missed the basic golf graphic on the cluster, unless it is not on the US version. *That is so true about the pedal limit, found it weird the setup. I usually notice the orange peel on cars that have been repainted, as if they cut corners, half asz paint job.

Orange Peel - Is a quality issue, it's literally impossible to get rid of, it isn't easy painting metal. I am from vehicular manufacturing btw. Your brakes are sharp (obviously) as it's a new car and the brakes are practically virgin, once you've run your car in a bit, they'll be fine. As an owner of an R, I genuinely think they should have done a better job of the exhaust note.
