Straight line speed is fun for people who haven't figured out what the circular thing in front of the drivers chest is for. I thrash mine around some twisty out of the way roads near my place. They're aren't slow, but rather they are not fast for a sports car. I will say though they're fast enough. There's reasons why it's 200hp, and it's a smart choice because the market for a 2 door coupe with a tiny back seat in a rear wheel drive is not great. Everyone wants these pussy front wheel automatic trans shit cars like a honda civic. After just buying one and thinking they're slow originally, I would say go test drive a manual and then get back to me on that! Too many people say that and they've never even driven one. One thing I will say is that car gets LOOKS. Another thing is, they're faster than 90% of the cars on the road. The rear wheel drive and handling is fucking amazing on that car and I've driven and owned a number of different cars. I love my FRS, no complaints other than the window seals seem to be a little shotty and the stereo isn't all that if you like low end music.

The main reason people think it's slow is the super low cg and sport suspension. These cars don't buck around like a family sedan with a big motor will, so you don't *feel* like you're going as fast as most cars in the same speed class.

The car is slow but not as slow as everyone makes it out to be. Honestly I think they see the specs and hate on it because it's only 200hp, when i was younger I use to do this a lot and would always think higher hp cars were always going to be faster, but power to weight ratio, handling, seating position, shifter, all play a roll in how enjoyable the car is. But even with that said, you could boost it to 250-500whp so its all a matter of how much money are you willing to spend to make the power, and then after that.. is the power really needed? I think this car has enough power for what it was ment to do, which is go around corners pretty damn well. In a straight it suffers but its not as slow as everyone says.
@GeorgioX77 жыл бұрын
does 6.1 seconds 0-100 just by changing the tires to 225s it's not slow at all Its light, if you launch it properly and everything, without the standard tires you get to 100km in 2nd gear. if you take the snadard car the preius tires really hurt the 0- 100 time this car is not slow at all for a 2 litre naturally aspirated car. People don't understand and just read specs. change the tires and you already have a huge improvement. I got and gt 86 trd with the kit and tires and everything, it is a very enjoyable car and judging buy the 0-100 time is in the speed of a 220 hp Gti , you just chip the 86 or turbo or super charger it, it becomes a beast
@BoscoBosker7 жыл бұрын
200 min 350 max. Unless you are on a track you will never really use the cars’ full potential on city/highway roads. that is why i see no point in buying high end HP cars. The 86 is also a pretty good everyday car.
@Borchert977 жыл бұрын
I currently drive a Camry I4 with about 180hp, and I only beat these cars if the driver is dumb. If it's against someone who knows how to launch a car, they'll win. 205hp vs. 180hp, 2800lb vs. 3400lb. A V6 Camry still probably loses to a good driver. 268hp but 3500-3600lb. The power to weight ratio ends up being the same so it really comes down to the driver specifically of the 86 since RWD is a lot pickier on launch.

I own one of these now, not sure exactly when I made that comment but it must've been before June 2017 because that's when I got mine. I can confidently say now that these are NOT as slow as people say they are. Especially with the final drive update for the 17s. I'm surprised you didn't mention the tires, the stock tires are super low rolling resistance and they did that for two reasons: 1. Better mileage 2. Drifts easier But that comes at the expense of having relatively low grip. Surprisingly, a set of wider wheels with summer tires improves acceleration times dramatically, the 1/4-mile time gets cut by almost a second. I got mine in blue and like your black, it also shows A LOT of swirls and shit, it's annoying. I'd take away the back seat complaint (because I knew going into the car that it wasn't going to be too usable), and I'd throw in the tires. I've done the TRD exhaust on mine too and it sounds fantastic, I can't wait to get a UEL header and tune to further compliment my exhaust setup. I got the SARD LSR carbon fiber wing which definitely makes my car stand out more than the average 86.

@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
Mine is Raven. Honestly, black is hard to keep clean in general. It just shows everything, but a good cleaning/detail person can always keep it looking great.
@RageofHades7 жыл бұрын
As a detailer...black vehicles do take extra care. We recently switched to a ceramic paint protection which clays as well cutting out a step(but you can literally feel the difference) and a ceramic one step polish that removes most imperfections by hand with a microfiber. Stuff is amazing in my opinion.
@Asher83287 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Any opinions on other colors? My current vehicle is grey/silver, and I notice that dust and dirt don't show up nearly as much as it did on the car I had before that (which was burgundy).
@RageofHades7 жыл бұрын
Black/White vehicles are the ones that typically take a little more care. Most other vehicles aren't an issue as in it doesn't show up as visibly as those other vehicles. It doesn't mean they are clean. The darker the vehicle the higher probability of water spots/imperfections showing up.

The back seat purpose is to keep Insurance price down. It's a 4 seat sports car vs. a two seat sports car. That said I like mine and like your Rocket bunny kit. It looks like you have to do a lot of sheet metal work to extend the fenders over the tires to meet the kit.

I'm considering getting an '86 but I think they should of made it turbocharged from stock. If I do get one I'll have to budget an extra 6k for a turbo kit and all the additional mods like intercooler, fuel pump, exhaust, management and tuning. Could potentially run up to nearer 8k so I'm looking at about £20k to get one up to the spec I'd need. Anyone who owns one, what are the standard brakes like?
@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
G 1989 nice set of pads and stainless steel lines and the brakes are well suitable enough for track and street use. Save the money for a turbo kit but also drive the car N/A as well, you may find it to be more fun pushing it to its limits.
@davedoyle46187 жыл бұрын
you probably know this but might be with noting there are a range of turbo and supercharger upgrades. I am looking into getting an 86 as the Mrs doesn't want anything to big so the mustangs out of the question as we live in the UK so they hammer us if you have a massive engine :( anyways I looked into three different upgradss. the Crawford kits good. I wouldn't go for the plus 300 kit simply if your driving on a hot day your engines going to over heat so it'd go with the smaller turbo. cosworth do a suoercharger kit which puts an extra 80bhp to the wheels so the new Rline golf and cars around that range would have some serious competition. there are others too which put out the same amounts of power. I'm looking to find one that would put ether an extra 100 bhp or possibly a smaller turbo then add nitrous with an extra 25 to 30 bhp gain. I think I could get away with that without blowing the engine up. colour wise I'd go perl white
@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
Dave Doyle around 300bhp and even 300whp you should be just fine with proper tuning. My plan is to go SBD turbo kit on E85 and shoot for 350+whp
@davedoyle46187 жыл бұрын
Zack Hendershot I wish we did E85 I've seen a lot of tuning vids from stateside that use it and a cheep way to add gains. I've got a buddy of mine who's a subrau engineer so I'm looking into a few ecu upgrades with him. I'm thinking it might be easier to keep everything HKS but I like the idea of a supercharger as there's hardly any lag.

The fact is so many drivers compare horse power with sexual prowess!? It’s BS, frankly! I would prefer 200🐎 and drive it flat out. Than have 600 that I can’t drive flat out. And Having a higher horse power car does not immediately make you a great driver- in the slightest!!!!

The complaints..... why even make the video? It's a 4 cylinder boxer engine with a 6 speed transmission and rear wheel drive. It is fun to drive, looks good and can achieve good mpg.... to me that is a win and the reason the car even exists.

Zack, our cars are slow car fast. They will out run 25% of whats on the road because they weigh over 1000lbs less than them. The other 25%, well I guess they get what they paid for.

it s a drift car! fwd cars can t do it as good, it s affordable, and fuel efficient. it s as close to an rx7 - supra as you can get. only the miata or mustang are as affordable in this segment. toyota left us the good and fun part to improve, the power. aside from the abs, anti skid, power mirrors, windows, and locks, they have set their priorities straight to me. good handling, brakes, transmission, it s a great platform for a real sport car to me. you save on gas until you can upgrade on power, it s brilliant. I d just hope that they d make a bare model that has no electric options available. a racetrack car, no cruise, no radio, nothing. at 20k, I get to the dealer.

5x100 at the time and imo still is limited in the wheel marker compared to 5x114. Plus for me, I needed wheels that would not fit under a stock body 86.

when i slam on the gas, and NOTHING happens. i owned one for four years. i tried the whole time to fall in love with it, but gave up and traded it for an s2k.
@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
humble rc well sure, cause they weren't built for that. I'm sure after owning one for four years that you took at least a few corners in it. You can't tell me it's not fun wringing it's neck to get its full potential out of it. It's an absolutely fun car, but if you're trying to get a thrill out of it by stomping the throttle, then it's definitely not the car to suite your needs.
@humblerc8417 жыл бұрын
Zack Hendershot oh my frs was fun as hell for sure. perhaps i was a little dramatic with my comment. i enjoyed the handling but not the persistant oversteer, and i found the acceleration to be underwhelming. i'm sorry, i didn't mean to shoot down your choice of vehicle. i dealt with a fair amount of the same thing when i had mine. everybody wants to race right up until the road gets curvy and the trees start calling out to them. i'm not a drag racer any more than you seem to be, i love carving corners. to me driving the frs was like going to bed with a really hot girl who was fun, but just couldn't keep up. i was always left wanting more. the s2k is perfect a perfect fit, and i was fortunate enough to find one under 25k miles. the toyobaru is a great car, and i've got a warm place in my heart for it. i hope you have fun with yours.
@Ryan-ue9ve7 жыл бұрын
humble rc you could have boosted it, install sway bars, and better tires. I mean the car has potential, but i would think if you are looking for performance that in four years you would at least mod it to your preference.i understand what you are talking about, after owning mine for 9 months im starting to grow tired of the power, but im also going to install a supercharger to solve that issue.
@humblerc8417 жыл бұрын
Bryan R i don't have the time or interest for modding and tuning. i'd rather just turn the key in a car that was built by engineers to do what i want it to do. that's pretty much why scion is all done, they built cars intended to be a tuner's canvas. there weren't enough interested parties to keep the brand afloat. initially i had thoughts of doing stuff with the car, but in the process of waiting for the waranty to expire i just got bored with it. during the last year of ownership it pretty much just sat in the garage.

As someone who has owned both a Miata (08) and an FR-S (15) the Miata was faster stock unless I was freeway racing. Both in terms of handling and straight line speed. I've raced them side-by-side many, many times. The new Miata's and the new 86 are virtually identical in straightline speed until 60mph where the 86 starts pulling very slightly. In terms of handling, the Miata is superior according to most professional drivers. So a 'faster' Miata is a silly thing to say. And this is coming from someone who loves both cars and currently drives an FR-S with over 7k of modifications (indicating I like and am invested in the car). By the way, I liked the video and you seem like a cool guy and your car is nicely modded. I intend no disrespect, just trying to spread that knowledge about another very underappreciated car (the Miata). :D www.caranddriver.com/mazda/mx-5-miata www.caranddriver.com/toyota/86 kzbin.info/www/bejne/hITUZo2Yar-Bjbs
@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
I wasn't really specific enough on that topic. As when I say Miata I always refer to the first couple of generations and anything newer I have always called them the MX-5. So that's where that statement came from, as I drove a few of the pop up miatas, but I can't speak for the newer generations. I've only heard rumors of a considerable amount more body roll over the 86.
@charliebrewster28097 жыл бұрын
Yeah no worries man. I felt like there was more body roll in the Miata (Mazda tunes them for 'fun' and not track from the factory) which meant that in sweepers and long tight corners the FR-S was faster and had a higher limit. Everywhere else though the considerable agility advantage of the Miata meant that it would dart in and out and around corners quicker. This was especially noticeable on very tight, 90 degree turns and switchback sections. You can really notice the difference in weight when pushing the cars to their limits, but both cars are obviously incredible great handling cars. Hence why I have had both, because they're both rad. Cheers. :)

2018 Camry is 301 hp and 267 ft lbs of torque. vs 2017 Toyota 86 205 hp and 151 ft lb of torque. Even taking weight into consideration the Camry would certainly pull on an 86 in a straight stretch. 96 more hp and 116 more ft lb of torque. The 86 is more fun to throw around the road... Just stick to that.
@itwitchdaily29297 жыл бұрын
Robert Lawson 2018 Camry was not released at this time I made this video. Even so that's comparing a V6 to a 4cylinder when Camry's 2.5L is 6hp more than the 86. Before 2018 they made 22hp less.

Ah, I work for Toyota so I may have known some info before official release, which is why even looking at the release of this video I figured this was public knowledge.
