Not only to modify but to maintain, the stock parts are way too expensive, in the US you have great OEM parts (IPD for example) but in EU it's not that easy. I don't get it how could it be corroded, because i have a bit older S60 and my friends have S60s and V70s and none of them has any rust. Paint chipping is a problem, yes, the roof trim dropped the paint in the early S60, after a 2005 facelift it's fixed, and the overall painting is better after 2005. My leather seats are in the same condition, the leather is not too bad (or not the worst), but the stitching is weak. The turning radius is the worst, like a truck... It's a pain in the ass to turn in my garage from my verry narrow street... the joke that is my neighbor with a Mercedes G can turn in like a charm, but i have to reverse once :D This car feels the best on motorway, on long journeys it's amazing and comfortable. My S60 is Nautic Blue Pearl and i love it. We need more 5 Cyl enginges, it's sad that only Audi has now and it's also counted too... M3 for fun, trackdays etc. V70 for traveling and daily :) It's a nice combo, well done.

Very surprised to hear you not like the quality. I had a 2000 S60 T5 for 10 years and the overall build quality was incredible. I would poke fun at my colleagues with BMW since their cars were either the same age or newer and were falling apart. The leather on the seats was very durable and I had zero rust issues. Oh well, maybe I was luckier, I don't know. My car wasn't parked out on the street either, so I don't know if you park it outside but that may contribute. Also, I had the 2.3l non-R version of the engine, with "only" 250hp (where I live, having a 2-litre diesel is fancy, so my T5 was king of the road), but it was pretty much bullet-proof in terms of reliability. I sold it for good money with nearly 200,000 miles on it and I still see the new owner drive around in it every day since. Edit: Oh yes, the turning radius is terrible.

1- Modifying these is fun. The first 70 hp or so is cheapish, after that, it gets super expensive really quick. 2- The open deck engine design is a bummer, but fixable, so it doesn't really matter as much as some people say. 3- I think the quality is great - if you think the rust is bad, you should buy a Toyota. Now those are crap. None of my P2s are rusting, and aside from the odd rattle, are pretty solid. 4- Agreed - turning radius sucks. It is much better on non-Rs and P1s with skinnier tires. V70R all day - they are so unique and different. 5- I do wish Volvo still made 5 cylinders and manual transmissions. I do think their current lineup is great, and is far higher quality, better looking, and more solid and comfy than the old stuff, but they have kind of left the enthusiast behind. At least they still make wagons (and damn good looking ones at that). Nobody else really does anymore in the US, and it's a shame.

Ecu doesn't know that you just put a big turbo into the engine to it wont take full advantage of the extra air coming into the intake side. You would get a Tune to set up the ECU to use the extra air coming into the engine to ACTUALLY get use of the turbo. If upgrading your engine, a tune is 9/10 needed to get a real performance gain out of your mods. Bult-ons n no tune is like a waffle with no syrup. I still own a 2000 v70 , its by far the best car i own, however i still have a a 1995 chevrolet astro i bought when i was 17 brand new, and a 2004 pilot.....i only drive my v70 on the weekends, i love the car to death, but it is the most expensive car to maintain....from vacum leaks, to maf filter problems, i regulate it to weekend get out errand cars....my pilot and astro is used for everyday drivers....but by far my volvo is the most comfortable car i ever sat in...

Do you get the D5 diesel in the US? It's would be good to see how much power you could get out of it.

I love the V70R more than almost any car....but an e90 M3 with a supercharger? That's gotta be top 5 dream car status. I'd take the M3 honestly!

All the manufacturers today are intentionally Installing faulty parts on vehicles so as to keep the consumer in that state of mind to continue spending. My issue is why charge so much for vehicles that are not worth the price

I have a 2006 V70 with 110,000 miles on it and other than a wide turning radius nothing else is wrong with it. The interior is in excellent condition, the electronics all work and I have replaced a few parts here and there but nothing else that’s major. It’s not as fast as yours but I didn’t buy it to get tickets. I also own three 2006 XC90’s and only one is having seat cover problem but that can be solved easy enough. I’m in my late 70’s and I will probably never sell any of them. Oh, I also have a 1986 BMW 3 series coupe that I’m going to restore. I love my Volvo’s.

I have a V 70 XC built in 5/2000, I had to replace the strut tower bearings, and a passenger door speaker. The parts car I bought the replacement speaker from was built maybe a year later, and the Ford ownership of Volvo already showed. The 8 inch speaker was instead a 6 inch AC-Delco with an adapter frame to fit the Volvo door. I imagine anything plastic was re-done by Ford in typical Ford quality, mine is also not jacked-up with lots of black fender trim like the later Cross-Countries. One thing the newer coupe at the wrecker has is a twin-turbo, I kind of wish I had that, but overall I like my car a lot. I bought a mint condition 1990 Civic 4- door, red with black interior. I will mod the Honda and enjoy the Volvo as-is, ( well, I did put rims and tires on the V-70 ), and I pulled the motor from my Honda yesterday, upon inspection all it needed was a head gasket, but at 145,000 miles the Honda looks good like it was owned by someone who cleaned it obsessively and maintained it like a non-mechanic, which was appealing as it is 100% stock down to 13 inch steel wheels, and it came with a spare engine that I am going to now install, then take my time building the low miles original engine before shoving it back in. Yes, it's going to waste a bit of time, but I need two cars all the time, I live on an island and the ferry is cheaper if I walk on. So the Volvo I drive in the big world because it's safe, the Honda is a motorcycle with a roof and a heater as far as I care.

A related question - the third brake light in the spoiler. Are the lights regular bulbs or LEDs?
