Casual driving is meant for Normal mode, not Sport mode. If you want sport features from sport mode without the tightened suspension you can change them individually in the settings. "Not a track monster", Dude, it's made for the TRACK; hence the highly bolstered seats. This is not a "normal road car" its a RS which if you didn't know stands for RALLYE SPORT. If you want a road car go buy a ST "street tune" which is what that car is made for. Also, people who got to review the car in Spain, on an actual track, only one reviewer noted an over heating problem with the rear clutch packs. The reviewer then was given a different RS and after switching, had no issues the rest of the trip. Your information in this video is based on misinformation, lack of basic knowledge, and too many assumptions without first hand experience. Shame on you.

To the people who are thinking "lots of cars don't have diff coolers, and they don't overheat", the AWD focus is a little unique, it actually has different diff gear ratios front to back to the tune of overspeeding the rear end 2%, then uses a clutch pack either side of the rear diff. This means the car is FWD normally, with the computer able to feed power to the rear tyres as it desires, critically this overspeeding allows it to basically eliminate under-steer since running the rear faster than the front (ie letting no clutch slip) WILL cause some wheel slip, so the computer can ensure the front tires don't loose grip first, even under hard acceleration in a corner (and yes, also the ridiculous drift mode which doesn't actually place as much load on the clutches as spirited driving would since in this mode they allow no slip, thus do no work\produce no heat). In addition by modulating that clutch it can provide as much power rearward as it can without wheel slip. All this sounds cool, but why is this not common, two reasons, firstly the rear clutch packs get the mechanical disadvantage from both the transmission and the diff gearing, so in the lower gears it could be >45 times more torque (and correspondingly less rotational speed) than the transmissions flywheel mounted clutch, or >3x more torque than a clutch between transmission and rear diff (like the GTR uses to send power forwards). So what does this all mean for the driver? Like the GTR (in fact even better than the GTR) the computer controls the cars attitude in corners, so with good software it could handle great, but its heavier for its level of durability than almost any other setup, and when acting hard will be less efficient, which is both why on review canyon runs people are getting similar to worse economy in the compact Ford RS than the full sized Camero and Corvette and why the car WILL have thermal + maintenance issues if you track it hard, its just we don't hear about them from reviewers since the obviously displayed engine temps aren't the cause, plus most cars are being used on a few short stints of high load in a otherwise mostly road driving test, rather than sustained operation. None the less, the idea of the RS is a cool one, 350hp and computer controlled AWD in a fairly small car, on paper it produces both decent daily economy and exiting 0-100kph (62mph) times, its just that in reviews its gotten mostly poorer launch speeds, and nobody's been able to reach the claimed 7.7L\100km (in fact they've been mostly around 12L\100km)... disappointing when coupled with a high price tag, poor turning circle and basic interior.

Fair assessments, all of them. A few things, though.. try to stop calling it a "rear diff". It's a rear drive unit. There is no differential inside of it. I've read what a GKN engineer involved with the project had to say about modding (now deleted).. and that was that no matter how much you mod, as long as you don't try to modify the clutchpack that shunts power to the rear (the thing responsible for the 70% lockup) you'll never put more than 70% of stock horsepower to the rear axle. The center clutch cannot really lock up, so it can never send more than the prescribed amount of torque/s. Kinetic friction is normal force multiplied by the coeficient of friction. The clutchpack's coeficient of friction is fixed by the disc materials and fluids used and the normal force is limited to a value that results in that 70% figure. It doesn't care if there's a space shuttle or a go cart on the other side of the clutchpack, it can only pull so much power. ie: a stock RS puts about 310hp to the wheels, which means about 220 can be shunted to the rear axle. That means a 1200hp RS will still only send about 220hp to the rear axle. Mod to your hearts content, you'll only blow up things under the hood, and make the F/R torque bias worse.
@completelymustang8 жыл бұрын
I agree with the opinion on interior. I think Volkswagen did it right with the "grandma's curtains" material in the GTI, much better than the "plasticy feel" of Ford. At a price point of 40k i want every inch of the interior to be alcantara.

GM and Honda make low seat cars, Ford and VW make high seat cars. Higher seats are better for your legs/circulation and for visibility, and are better for your back in a crash. You can drive for hours in a GTi but only for 90 minutes in a Corvette before your butt hurts, seat quality is part of that though. The Focus is meant to drift and thus needs a stiffer suspension than a GT350. Don't put it into sport mode unless you want to drive 'sporty'.

@GilesHinton8 жыл бұрын
+Bliglum have driven both and I agree the Golf R is dull to drive and feels laggy in lower gears - I also think the interior whilst it looks ok feels cheaply made - sun visor felt like it might come off in my hand on the test drive, and the interface for stereo etc was a little dated - for me the tech in the Ford is way ahead; the Golf also can't be tuned without voiding warranty. The Golf R is like a poor man's M3, looks sharp suited, but not all that exciting to drive.

Plus bmw greatly underrates their engines. It advertises that the m2 has 365hp. People have been doing dynos with their m2 and it puts down 380hp to the wheels, meaning the m2 is really like 400hp+ at the crank. Bmw are liars. Plus mods such as dinan tunes are ready to upgrade your m2.. & jb4 tunes work for it too Its lighter, rwd and more gorgeous so why would i pick the foxus rs over an m2 again?
