RE noise, I rip out the thin OEM carpet, stick on a layer of sound dampening to the tub from floor board to under passenger seats, then put down the Bed Rug carpet on top. Finally, I stick the pre cut Boom Mat (or similar) pieces to the hard top. Works wonders. Adds negligible weight. I have to drive 12 hours to get to the mountains….no brainer for me.

FYI, I think it was Wayalife that did a video about the gap in the fenders. If I recall correctly, it was basically just lay a length of 3/8 neoprene or rubber hose in that gap. And here's what I really like about those fenders compared to a 4Runner. If you tag one of those fenders on a tree or a rock, big deal, it's plastic. Maybe it gets scratched, or even ripped off. Easily replaceable. If you hit the 4Runner in the same place, you're crunching sheet metal and now you're out thousands of dollars worth of bodywork to fix it.

The flares are sacrificial for the most part. If you're wheeling hard there are times you'll put the rig on its side and drag it through the trail. Go wheel the Notches at Truckhaven with your painted flares and see what they look like when you're done.

Fenders are cheap, because they are meant to be beat and easily and cheaply replaced. Price is high, but so is resale, so you might pay more to buy new, but loose significantly less when its time to replace it then most other vehicles. Also with a simple adjustment you can lower the rack further and would allow you access to the back without taking the rack off. The guys in TJs, LJs, YJs and CJs all think your 4 door Jeep is a behemoth compared to theirs space-wise. It's a true utility vehicle, and you have to accept it for what it is to some extent. The plastic fenders should be considered a sacrificial lamb. The alternative to the body being sucked in (which makes shoulder space inside tight) with plastic fenders sticking out, is a vehicle that has the body panels out there. Nothing quite fits down a trail like a Wrangler. I would have to guess on your 4 runner the rocker panels and lower doors were pretty chipped up and looking like garbage, but because it is out of sight / out of mind down low, you just didn't pay attention much. I do agree that what they did with that gap on the fenders was just dumb. I've seen others complain about that. That wasn't a problem on the TJs. Painted fenders are not the answer (they crack and chip). When I had my TJ, I had a tire mounted bike rack, so no access problem there. I do agree the price on these things is getting unaffordable. I bought a TJ 4.0L Sport in '97 for around $19,500 and I thought that was expensive then. Or, you could go the route I did with a Power Wagon, and spend a weekend with scratch remover and sore arms after a jaunt in the woods.
