No offence to Americans, or most of the world apparently, but wearing your outdoor shoes inside is such a crazy thing.
@tntfreddan3138

Wearing shoes indoors is weird in general. "It's dirty" well you're the one making it dirty by walking around with shoes and dragging in mud and dirt all over the place. I have my fur slippers on right now and that's basically the only thing I tend to have on my feet when not outside or working. During the winter I have shoes on while working because leaving the work shoes on the doorstep on the truck while it's snowing or raining can be a bad idea, because it's not air nor water proof between the body of the truck and the door so they either freeze of get wet, or both. I take my shoes off in the summer, though.

I wouldn't really say that it rains that much in the summer in Sweden actually, compared to many other countries (like britain/ireland). Mostly we only have what we call a "skur" here and there. It can rain for half an hour to and hour a few times a week. But mostly it's sunny when it's actually summer. Though sometimes summer becomes way too short.

The thing with turning the groceries so that the barcode is the right way for the cashier is something that makes me truly grateful for having been born and raised in Sweden. We might avoid our neighbours and can't make small talk if our lives depended on it; but no one will look at you weird of you take the well-being of the cashier at the grocery store in consideration. We *do* care for each other, we just show it in a different way I guess? ❤️ Although, do note that it's not *expected* to do so. It's just not weird if you do. :) Just don't pile the groceries. That's just rude. 😂

I agree, to find a way to get everyday life running in a foreign country is truly making you grow as a person! Me and my family went to Australia for a year, me and my husband worked there and our kids went to schools. Now we are back in Sweden since 1 1/2 years. I am really grateful for the opportunity, and the experience has made me appreciate both the Aussie way of living, AND the Swedish way of life. I now love two countries, in different ways.

Stefan, in a word: "Bravo!" Here in southern Poland we have a seasonal cycle that is not as extreme as Stockholm, and at our summer solstice we're used to twilight at 2230 hours, with the sun rising at 0100--so there are no endless summer nights--but the shorter winter days are not bothersome to me at all. There is a "terrible beauty" to that seasonal change. Beauty that is a part of nature woven into the planet's own life cycle. I especially appreciated the clips of your walks and jogging about town--l only wish you had spent a few more minutes capturing that street view of Stockholm at dusk. It's always great to hear someone compare another country to America, and to resist the idea that it's the world greatest country. It's not just the USA that can appreciate and learn from the Scandinavian region, but other advanced inustrialized and developing countries that can adapt from the Swedish model in order to achieve a very high standard of living (inclusive of the highest rankings in gender equality, among many other social measures) with a much smaller carbon footprint. ****** It's still on my list of things to do in my lifetime (l have 65 years), but l would like to cruise the Norwegian coast from Oslo to Lofoten, once in the summer and a second time in the deep of winter. And to spend one month in Lofoten without the sun... Keep up the superb work Stefan. Well done. Best wishes for a better New Year!

@@caciliawhy5195 Yes, but we have fools for leaders. Authentic leadership is absent across EU, and most Poles live under stress. My heart goes out to them. I refuse to shop in foreigner stores. I only go to Polish shops. As for gender equality, it was outrageous to me that women had to take to streets to fight for rights they have already! Poles should look to Scandinavia countries, not EU or US to organize our country. I love Poland--at least we have freedom to complain still. As male, l am ashamed by how many men treat their wives or partners. They ticketed women for protesting. But one word that Polish men say should be made illegal and they should be ticked and go to jail until it is purged from Polish language... Lepszego nowegu roku!

My top 5: I live in Norway, not Sweden, but I think these apply just as well for both. #1. everything just works. I see you too touch upon this. The buses run on time (well, mostly), the streets are clean, people obey traffic laws, the streets are plowed when it snows, and so on. #2. freedom to roam. You're allowed to hike wherever you want in the wilderness, as long as you stay off crops and keep a respectful distance to houses and cabins. Obviously if you have something of value out in the woods (a logging camp, industrial site, parked vehicles, etc.), you're allowed to fence it off, but if it's just trees and nature, it's open to everyone. #3. free college and university tuition. You can be the child of some low income family and still have access to higher education, allowing for social mobility. #4. the high level of trust we have in each other, and in society and government as a whole. We can fiercely disagree with government decisions and with each other, but in the end we have faith in our politicians. We have a high degree of transparency and little corruption, and politicians are usually (not always) good at consulting and listening to experts and basing decisions on facts. This has greatly helped us during the corona pandemic. The downside is that we, and the politicians, can spend a looong time discussing and researching for and against before reaching decisions. #5. this is the one that's the most "cultural" or "your mileage may wary" one, I feel -- the gender equality. Women can and frequently do rise to high-level positions in both business and government. Boys and girls have more of the same expectations and social norms -- girls are allowed to swear, wear pants with holes in them or dirty shoes, and talk tough when they want to. Guys are allowed to be vulnerable, at least more than in many other countries. Guys are expected to know how to cook, and can't just relegate this to the woman. Many households try to share all the household tasks, so that both partners clean as much, for example.

Okay, I could'nt afford to eat out, I could'nt afford too see a movie, shop for shoppings sake but, I already had more than I needed. Why cold whether and snow is good for you? When most of the day is dark, the snow reflects the small lights that exist, even if you’re out of town the star light give enough light to see remarkable good and the full moon become a big flash lamp. When the temperature goes down, about -6 Celsius or less, also the humidity falls so the air become dry and crisp, just touching your skin. A bit warmer, about few degrees around 0 Celsius, you freeze through your bones. I’m gonna be honest. I’m from the US but I remember you saying how Swedes are very understanding and helpful, and that gave me some relief because I really wanna go to Sweden one day and have a conversation in Swedish with a Swedish person. 💛💙 I’m scared I’ll mess up the language or say something backwards and they’ll get mad or offended. That’s the last thing I want. I have Swedish in my blood and am very proud of it. I just wish I was from Sweden altogether.

Sweden is an amazing country. Even if the weather isn't always welcoming, we Swedes still do what we do, cause it's better to be welcoming towards others than to be miserable all the time. And i'm actually looking to learn Spanish, German and Russian, as i'm fluent in my own language, which is Swedish and English. And it's true that we here in Sweden understands English, so those who are unfamiliar with Swedish won't understand anything. To be honest about one thing, i'm so good at English that i often forgets Swedish words, and that makes thinga hard for me to talk properly with my own people. I often combine the useage of both Swedish and English, cause i know many of my friends understands me. My parents however, aren't the best at understanding English, so i often translate words for them, even if i have it a bit hard at making myself clear in my native Swedish. It sucks, as i tend to forget many Swedish words and when i'm talking to my parents, i often must go through other means to explain

Yeah, me too. It depends on what subject I speaking about, like KZbin, movies, tv-series and games I usually only talk with English speakers so when I talk to a Swedish speaker about those subjects I inject a lot of English words. On the other hand, I'm a massage therapist and when I have an English speaking customer it makes it way more difficult to talk to them about muscles and what they need to do to improve their posture etc.

@@Shiva182Katarina yeah. My intressts are mostly video games and i'm often by myself as i'm an introvert, so not much socializing for me. In my case, it's mostly because i'm so good at speaking both, that i tend to forget words and then it's because i'm an introvert, so i have a hard time knowing what to talk about. That's why i'm single at least. I might be young, as i'm soon to be 22 in febuary next year, and many thinks i'm way older, because i'm so good at English and Swedish. It's just that i'm fast at learning a new language, but eh, i only want a new job as of now, as i don't enjoy the current job i have, and i rarely talk to my colleagues. When i do speak to others, i often throw in English words in most of my sentences, which i don't know why i do

Grateful it hasn't been too cold or snowy in Stockholm. Usually I have to stop biking by December because of ice and snow, I can still bike and it is my solace. Smhi, the Swedish weather service has not been accurate about the rain forecast. It has rained everyday since November, and the forecast often doesn't say rain. Weirdly I am grateful, because t gets me out on the bike when I wouldn't go out if rain was in the forecast.

As a Swede, from what I've heard, it really really helps to interact with Swedes just in general in Swedish. If there are words you don't know, or if you have trouble understanding / explaining, it's always possible to switch to English, but trying to have as much of your conversations as possible in Swedish seems to help a lot (source: immigrants I've met).

Let me answer your question here because i also from a foreigner background but have been in Sweden for 27 years, to learn Swedish in proper way is to get friends in first place, maybe another family to deal with on daily basis, if you are at work, speak Swedish, be in the "fika" breaks, afterwork, etc (maybe not at the moment because of corona), to watch movies/TV Shows with Swedish SUBS, to listen to radio with talk shows in Swedish, to not be shy to speak Swedish even if you are bad at that, also don't hesitate to mix English and Swedish together, people will not say anything negative.. cheers!

Living in Canada for years 🍁 I admit that the four seasons are nice. Even winter is good when you’re young but getting older and slipping and falling down on ice is no fun. I live in a country with a completely different language and I’m a slow learner but I like it. One thing about being in a different country is I like the variety and even after years I see new things. And traveling I have met a lot of great people. A very nice video, Stefan, and happy new year to you (a belated greeting, I know). The winters nowadays in Stockholm are ridiculous. I remember being a teen in the 80's and it was -25. Standing by the bus station or train station (pendeltåget) waiting for delays and so on. That was cold as f*ck. However, it is chilly, no doubt about that. Please, be careful when running in wintertime. Thinking of ice of course. You don't wanna get hurt. Now I do sound like a mother, don't I! lol! I did follow you before and I think I even commented on some vids. Somehow I) must have unsubscribed unintentionally. Yep, I'm getting senile. I'm grateful to having four seasons in Sweden because change is healthy (even the boring weather). Having had that time away (in the UK and in Palestine) made me realise how much I love my hometown and how grateful I am to have grown up partly in Stockholm. I grew up abroad a lot (mainly around Africa) and I always felt very disconnected, especially growing up mixed race in a country that is by and large very homogenous, but living here permanently as an adult has made me see things a bit differently and appreciate what's my heritage. Also, if you ever want to discover some more hidden gems of the city, let me know and I'll be happy to share them!
