I no longer shop when I'm emotionally stressed. I was using "retail" therapy as a way to soothe myself. I've no learned to recognize when I'm shopping based on emotion. I have discovered yoga as a stress reliever.

Romans116gurl I resonate with that a lot, when I reflect back I always say 'why did I buy that?!'. So now when I have the urge I think back at the many times I regretted purchases and I think it helps. Thanks for sharing!

I too lately waste too much time even thinking about going to shop, drift through shops without buying anything or just go 'for a walk' to the mall. It is terrible addiction. I don't buy most of the time because, thank god, since years I have my style and look for clothing that fits me and my style. But the amount of time and thoughts I spend is insane. I could learn another language if I were that committed.

One of the things that I have been doing pretty successfully is shaving with the last bits of lotions that I bought at one time and no longer like the scent of. Or if it's an old shampoo or body wash that I've gotten down to the bottom of and set to the side because I didn't wanna deal with it, I'll use it in my liquid hand soap dispenser or even to clean my toilet. Lol, soap is soap, am I right? So long as it cleans and gets used around the house somehow, who cares?

I stopped buying some home cleaning items because my shampoo or liquid soap gets rid of dirt and I have the scent in home that I like. It saves money too.

You are so beautiful and always look so fresh and calm. I no longer purchase makeup because I make it! I used to purchase lots of different oils and skincare ingredients, but now I know what I love and really works for my skin and stick with that. So I don't buy much commercial made skincare either and only occasionally purchase that from ethical, organic, unrefined small makers. Lovely video!!

thoughtful and practical advice! personally, i've stopped hoarding on bath products and perfumes. earlier i used to have a variety of them but now I purchase only when i run out - helps reduce clutter and they don't get stale. Also, i avoid going grocery shopping when i'm hungry, having a small snack earlier prevents junk food purchases.

I stopped buying new decorations every time a holiday comes. For instance, I have kids and Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas is around the corner. It's been tempting to purchase different decorations than what I have - so many cool, pretty ones in the stores now! But what I've found is that my kids love the novelty of me simply pulling out the old ones because I only pull them out for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They don't see seasonal decorations the rest of the year. I only have a few seasonal decorations and my kids did ask if we could have more. I told them they could make one, and only one, additional. They loved making their own! Much more rewarding than buying a new one. If I ever do buy another decoration, I will buy using the one in, one out rule.

In general I'd say I no longer buy items on a whim. I do research on the item, the fabric's longevity and ease of care and if it will work in the 4 season climate I live in. I also don't buy new if I can absolutely avoid it-but it is really hard to do sometimes. And truth be told when the budget is tight and I've exhausted my second hand options and can't find what I really need I do buy from a higher quality, albeit not an ethical brand. I compensate by taking care of it and mending and repairing the item to give it a long life. I have a few Pinterest boards where I just go crazy and pin all sorts of beautiful things. I realized a while ago that just because I found something beautiful does not mean I have to own it. Now I am quite content with just looking at images of beauty- I think it was this realization that was the turning point in my taking on minimalism as a way of life.

I try to use the one in one out rule. If I want to buy something new, I have to decide what old thing to let go of before I make the purchase. A lot of times, I realize I love the stuff I have already more than the new thing and I don't purchase. Also, I try to wait before making a purchase. Even waiting 24 hours helps me make better purchases.

I feel you on the things that "require more things." I recently struggled with the simple act of buying a mop for hardwood floors. A lot of Swiffer/Bona type items require refill pads or cleaners which feels like a consumer trap. So painful for an aspiring minimalist!
@itsmarialifestyle4355

I don't use mops! I use old cotton cloth (old t-shirts, towels, sheets etc) and do it with my hands. Like the traditional Japanese. You can use reusable plastic gloves if you are not comfortable touching the cloth, but this method really cleans, and you get a great workout!

I no longer purchase shoes that aren't beautiful, ethically acceptable and comfy at the same time. Since that's a very rare combination, I hardly buy any shoes now. I also no longer buy processed food or household electronics or gadgets that replace actions that you can do by hand /with a knife very easily. I no longer buy 'storage solutions' to tidy up. With fewer things to deal with, you don't have to make an effort to hide them anymore.

Hi, you make me feel like I found a kindred spirit though I never considered myself as minimalist and I got a whole lotta stuff still. However I still wear my clothes from my college days which was over 20 years ago. They still fit me just fine and not discolored. In fact when I lost 20+ kg after my cancer surgery, I puller out those old clothes I couldn't wear coz I gained so much weight after childbirths. I could now fit into them again w/ ease and I gave away or throw out my 'fat' clothes. I wear my shoes till they're worn out and my friends laughed at me for being cheap. I don't think that I was being cheap. I'm just too lazy to maintain so many shoes that pinch my feet just to look good. Anyway thanks for the videos. I recently found your channel and found it comforting to know that I'm not being the cheapskate my friends think to be.

Kbunnygrl how do you change and clean it in public? I know when you empty it, you have to clean it
@Kbunnygrl
@Kbunnygrl 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think I've ever needed to do that, and I've been using cups for years now. I mean, you can keep it in for quite a long time. I believe maximum time between cleaning is 12hrs. I clean the cup in the morning at home, when I get back home from work in the afternoon and before going to sleep, sometimes at work if I feel like I need to but then just with water. If know I will be going somewhere where there are only public toilets that are particularly nasty (like shopping centers), I would clean the cup at home and wait till I get back.
@beans2222
@beans2222 7 жыл бұрын
Felicia You dont have to clean it everytime you empty it. If you (somehow) overflow in public, and it's only public bathrooms, just go in the stall and empty it and clean yourself with toilet paper and put it back it and clean it all in the sink when you get home at the end of the day. But usually you never have to empty it in public

#4 really applied to me. I'm a homemaker while my youngest isn't in school yet and I would buy the latest cleaning tool that required constantly buying disposable cleaning products to use for it that were either filled with dangerous chemicals or just expensive. Ive started making my own cleaning products and using tools that can be washed and reused. I know this channel is focused more on the fashion side of things but I find your advise to be so universal.

It is interesting that in middle class but in lower income countries we had always done this, whitout even propose to do so. We don't even feel that we are doing someting special, is just the way we do it, and I just realized with your video. Anyway, it is important to do this kind of videos because in some countries the consumism is just out of control.

What I like to do is when a new trend comes up that I know I'll only wear for one season I figure out how to temporarily rework a piece of clothing I already have into that. When colorblocking was big I seam ripped and resewed sleeves from two differently colored shirts onto each other, and then when I was tired of that it was easy to put it back how it started again. Sequins can be sewn on and then removed (it's easy to wiggle the fabric so that the little holes where they were sewn in disappear), lace can be sewn over a hemline in a different color of thread and later removed, normal sleeves temporarily replaced with easy sewn on mesh sleeves, shirt pocket replaced with a contrast fabric, etc. Just learn basic sewing skills and it's easy to adapt any of your clothes to fit the latest season's style.

Great video! And good tips on how to avoid falling into these purchasing traps. I used to buy shower gel in plastic bottles but since switched to unpackaged soap bars which last waaaaay longer and end up being cheaper. I also haven't replaced any of my "night out" dresses which have almost all been donated over time because I go out soooo infrequently and when I do go out I just wear pretty casual clothes like black tights, jeans shorts, a top and my boots which I find more "me"-ish anyway. I realised I don't really care about "day looks" and "night looks" haha

The best way to move to minimalism or capsule wardrobe, in my opinion, is to know what body type you have and what colors suit you the best. I got rid of a full normal sized bag of clothing items that I rarely wore and they were mostly bought on an impulse and from fast brand shops and looked washed out and dated after couple of months wearing them. I am saving for spring/summer items and making the list of what I need and where I could buy good quality, preferably ethically made, in the shape that suits me and my style.

I no longer buy things I don't know where to put and this means if I buy something then something else must go. It's amazing how much this has stopped me from buying on impulse or buying something just because :) I've also found that regularly going through closets, cupboards and drawers (monthly) to determine what I can donate to a thrift store to help someone else out has also prevented me from buying things I don't need. The whole process reminds me often of how much abundance we have in the west that we must be vigilant with clutter when there are those in the world who have so little they simply don't have enough. It's rather like how many people in the west speak of going on a reducing diet when there are those in the world who have no idea how they are going to get enough calories into their bodies to stay alive :)

If I already have shampoo, cream, face cream, foundation I do not buy a second one to try out because I usually buy my regular anyway. Sticking to what works. If something does not work. I give or toss then buy a new one. Special occasions I do not buy something new. I mix and match pieces or even with the jewelry to spice it up. When there are sales like right now. I stick to online shopping and buy needs over wants

I usually buy clothes which i think i can wear to almost every thing like a grey skirt,black velvet coat,red trousers .Same to handbags i now have a redish season but when buying i picture my outfits to this handbag if it fits then i buy.I hardly have pastel colours in handbags or skirts or trousers cause they don't match with any colour especially with my dark skin i prefer basic colours.Though am now changing to pastel colours kind of mix and match ,i like mint green but as a handbag its tricky ,maybe as a top or skirt with jeans.I realize that actually buying things don't make me happier at times its the opposite.Especially with online shops right now the quality of things is not what you get occassionaly.

I no longer buy make up and only cruelty free skin care. I feel no urge to buy clothes anymore, but I do have a bit of a problem with buying candles and facial skin care..Any tips?

I don't buy much toiletry I'm using what I have and I occasionally I stuck up on some nesesities such of shampoo or body wash if I find cheap or running out of something I replace but I get like 2 pieces then I wait until I run of it to stuck on the item again, I also don't buy perfumes I have some on my wish list but I have some for a list 2 years right now so I'm not getting new ones anyways I'm always getting them on special occasions that's the reason I have many to start with😊

I started disagreeing with you immediately, but as you keep talking it made sense. You changed in a bit the way I was thinking about buying clothes. Thanks! :)

Often when I am shipping for something I ask myself: Can i make this? If the answer is yes, then i figure, if I want it enough, I will make it. This might not work for everyone since I am a crafter.

Ha, I never did any of those, even before I became a eco minimalist :-) Thrift and outlet stores, did it before it was the thing to do (ya' know, when ppl were kind of ashamed to do such a thing, lol .. I never understood that, just seemed smart to me, even before others realized it). I just recently came upon your channel, so wasn't sure how "eco" you really are. Was hoping your list was going to be things like... Toothpaste/toothbrush (see myswak), deodorant, bar (or any mainstream) soap, OTCs, hair brush, razor, lol... Etc. Most of us have a ways to go :-) Btw, you can be very clean, attractive and much healthier without all that.

You are so beautiful! :-) I usually don't write this kind of comments but your beauty seems to me so natural - you don't wear tonnes of make-up. I just really like it and want to tell you. ;-)

Does anyone have tips on being more eco friendly with electronics?? For instance chargers on Apple devices break so easily and it's such a waste but I depend on the device a lot
