at my old workplace my coworkers would often come in pajamas or sweats, because our work was all done online and we weren’t dealing with the general public. i remember coming in one day in a basic cotton dress and allll my coworkers had shit to say. “who are you trying to impress?” “only you would show up to work in a dress 🙄” “aren’t you uncomfortable?” even my boss reminded me that we don’t have a dress code, and i should relax. when i moved to europe (from the US) i realized how backwards we are when it comes to fashion. people in the US see it as a burden rather than a way to feel more confident and show off your personality. i’m back in my mom’s california town due to covid and still wear heels with my jeans and jewelry. the amount of nasty “who does she think she is” looks from people is ridiculous.

They might be jealous because seeing you dress up is making them feel insecure about their lack of effort. If they were rlly secure with dressing that way they wouldn't bother you. Don't let it get you down I love ppl who like to dress up☺

Wait until you get to be 60 and older. Fewer women even try anymore and end up looking dumpy and complain that they feel dumpy. I feel ashamed sometimes just wearing lipstick around people who have given up like that and really try not to even make friends with people who stopped taking pride in themselves. They usually have a negative attitude that goes with it too.

What you said about overdressed: I once wore a formal jacket in my work place... We all wear formals (formal shirt and pants, I just happened to put a jacket above it)... I kept it minimal, it was a grey jacket (also old and something I had lying around in my wardrobe) so I wore all black underneath and added nothing fancy... But once I reached the office... This older colleague of mine pointed out in front of everyone that I was overdressed. I spent the entire day so uncomfortable and I still carried that with me... Until this moment... Until what you said... I finally feel free of the guilt of doing that... Thank you so much Bethany... You help a lot... 🌼❤

In my office everyone wears jeans and T-shirt if there isn’t a presentation. I still wear slacks and trousers as well as shirts/ blouses to work. It makes me feel and look more confident and makes me appear more professional. So go with being „overdressed“ and use it to your advantage. Also note that there is a difference between being overdressede and dressed inappropriately.

I used to teach middle school at a private school and I was told by a number of my colleagues and even the principal that I was overdressed. Their wording was more like “too nice for this job.” Here I was wondering why some staff dressed in flip flops & disheveled clothes made for teens. I just wanted to feel put together and ironing my slacks and tops always made me feel good... plus it just made sense to practice good hygiene and model it for my students .

I think that this "overdressed" issue is an American thing. I remember when I made an exchange with American students who were visiting my city. They would ask me if I had an event or something and how long did I take to choose my outfits haha, but after a few days in France they'd realize that this is just how we dress.

Same. I lived in Tokyo, and it’s really fashion conscious. So much so that people will look at you if you go take a quick trip to a supermarket in like flip flops, jeans and a t shirt. Living in Tokyo really made me become fashion conscious.

I also got the dreaded "overdressed" comment. What Bethany said is right; over time, those comments stopped, and people started to notice that classy and sophisticated was my style. Now my coworkers are asking me to go shopping with them and if this outfit looks sophisticated on mannequins in the attire department. My favorite clothing pieces are white wide-leg pants with pointed tan flat shoes and a rattan bag in the summer and one-piece dresses.
@tamoe71074 жыл бұрын
The "being overdressed" comment was so spot on! I used to think I couldn't dress up for work because of what people would say and once I started to go to work in vintage style everyone was like "are you going out after work today?" or "who are you trying to impress" (I usally just answered that one with "I only dress this nicely for you folks" trying to be funny) after a while my coworkers started to really like my style though and complimented me on every outfit I thoughtfully put together. And in the end, I was having a slight cold and just couldn't be bothered to dress in my usual style one day, EVERYONE pointed out how I was wearing "normal clothes" today and how weird that was haha - so in the end, it's all about being confident in your own style and self and everyone else just being used to what you dress like :D (which is why I'm just gonna dress up at my new job from the very start no matter what everyone may say... and since I'm working with kids and there's lots of colours and glue and stuff going around, I just made myself a few fancy aprons so my favourite clothes won't get dirty :D )

I completely resonate with the point of underdressing because of unnecessary comments about how dressy you would look compared to other people! But I have realized that I solely do it for myself, it makes me feel good and that's what counts the most

I’m proudly “overdressed” all the time! My family had modest beginnings but my parents always made sure I was well dressed (outfits neat, clean, and well coordinated, not necessarily expensive) As an adult, I am often asked why I am so dressed up for the day, and I always ask them “when am I NOT dressed up?” Like, you should know by now 😉

I have the same experiences with you. Family was really not well off throughout childhood but parent always encourage me to dress neatly and present myself well. So it just become a habit. I live in a tropical developing country so people rarely do makeup or if they did, usually just for special events or very very minimal (you have to make it look like you have nothing on, all natura~ so people won't judge you). As a girl who extremely into glam, I adore makeup and so just do my whole face if I have a time. The look people give me sometimes... like I terrify them lol.

I've been wondering for a while about why I (and a lot of women) don't dare to wear our pretty, fancy clothes. I've had this problem forever, and only recently have I realised that I'm basically giving up my true style (my true self) in order to fit in and not to get attention. I guess I'm so used to be being the "obscure one", that now I don't dare to shine. It's stupid , because most women love if they turn heads, but i just have this weird, paradox feeling when I would like to be appreciated for my style, but at the same time I dont really want all eyes on me. But it's totally true, that if you still go out and wear your prettiest clothes, youll eventually make "fancy you" the normal you, and people will know you as "the girl/woman with great fashion sense." It's a long road, but at least I'm on it now ~~

I excused myself from my children to watch this over a cup of coffee. ☕️ I told them I was watching a “mommy video” for a few minutes. 😉 Enjoyed this so much. You reminded me of a lady I glimpsed at the store last week. She was dressed beautifully in a lace-trimmed white cotton blouse and goldenrod linen trousers. Her back was to me, but she was so simply stylish from the back that I kept studiously glancing at her as I walked away. I almost wanted to go right up to her and compliment her lovely outfit! So yes, even though she was the only person in town dressed like that, she was a pleasure to behold, and I’d agree we need more people willing to exude their unique style in the masses of jeans and tee shirts. (For the record, you’ll find me in an A-line maxi dress more often than not. Although I aspire to try my own version of the mysterious-grocery-store-lady’s outfit. 😉)

I really liked what was said about not dressing like the rest of the people around you or in your town. I remember back in college, during the winter I wore a pea coat on campus, but I would see everyone else wearing north face jackets. Like It was really cold, and they were wearing north face jackets. I didn't get it. I felt really out of place even though we all were attending the same college. Lately I am getting into South Korean fashions, so I'm starting to buy clothes like oversize button ups and tucking them in to my high waist pants. No one else is really dressing like this where I live. I don't want to wear the same Old Navy brands like everyone else.

I bought myself a north face during the cold season, for the first time and wore it to work because I work in a mill. (Every one else was in Carhartt btw. And I'll admit I almost bought one, but I chose to be the odd worker. It felt great) A coworker pointed out the brand name. I simply replied "I worked for it, didnt i?" They just nodded and went about their way haha. I used to wear 4 sweaters to not be cold, so splurging a little didnt hurt one bit.😂 Haha.

I can relate so much. Whatever I wear someone yells OVERDRESSED. I think it might also be because I'm tall so It's kind of hard to fly under the radar, and because I live in Australia which is kind of casual. I can be just wearing a long cardigan, white jeans, a pair of loafers and a simple printed top to the movies and I am overdressed by all accounts simply because I look put together. I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this, but I think the main reason why I shy away from dressing nicely on campus is being self-conscious about appearing to "try too hard." And the other side of the same coin is like my mother says, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed because it shows that you care about wherever you're going and who you encounter, and also that you care about your own appearance. What I'm going to try to do moving forward is look put together at any level of formality-- and your videos on how to style loungewear offer a lot of inspiration!

I can relate so much to the feelings that come with those comments of being overdressed. Like: "Wow, where are you going?" "Are you going out?" "Do you have something important later?" It makes me feel so akward, and the same happens with wanting to dress a certain way but feeling like my town isn´t ready for it. I´ve noticed I actually feel more comfortable dressing however I want in bigger cities. But you´re right, it´s just a matter of owning it and people -and I- will get used to it. Omg I felt so related to that "overdressed" issue... I always remember when I bought a jacket that I loved when I tried it on (and it was kinda expensive), and when I used it for the first time at my work place, a coworker said "where's the wedding??". I never wore that jacket ever again (except for one actual wedding 🤣).
@Nebulousss4 жыл бұрын
I also remember when I just started working after graduating from college, I was so stressed about what to wear for work, so I thought buying a couple of dresses couldn't go wrong. I found a very pretty and kinda simple dress that I thought would do the job. This was like my 5th day working. As soon as I arrived to my work place, I received comments about my dress from like 6 different persons. They were positive comments, they all said things like "wow what a nice dress", "you look good today!", "you look so feminine!", "that dress looks so good on you!", "you look great, is there any special occasion today?" etc etc. All those comments made me feel SO uncomfortable with my dress, that the only thing I could think of that day was about how overdressed I was and that I did a terrible mistake picking that dress... It's like I prefer to go unseen haha. And well, you can guess I never wore that dress again in the office... The funny thing is that a year later, a girl came to our floor and she was wearing that *exact same dress* ! And it looked so good on her, and it looked classy and casual. I would never ever say she was "overdressed", she was just looking good. And what I thought was "it must be me, I'm not made to wear dresses at work" lol.

2 years ago, I moved to NY and things were not very good, and I wasn't taking care of myself at all. So, I give the minimal effort and minimal energy for myself, as a result I was so insecure and was in a phase of being unsocial and indifferent to everything. But this year (tho so many bad things happening around us) I improved myself, I am loving myself more, I am practicing self love more, even if I forget constantly reminding myself that you will be there to take care of yourself even if no one else does. You will put the effort in to nourish you, your body and mind won't disappoint you😊 Thank you for reading this comment. Have a great day ❤

I stopped buying things that feel too casual and teenager-ish to me, I kind of realized that I like to have some element of chic and elegance in my clothes or at least keep it basic and neutral. And I'll be in the minority with this, but I've never actually felt overdressed by people around me, never received such comment and always felt that the pressure is much more to not be underdressed. Sometimes seeing vids like "tips on European style" done by American youtubers I click on them (obviously I'm curious of what they're going to put in there, knowing that the style isn't the same in all parts of the continent) and there's always that one part of how the standard is to be more elegant and put more thought into your outfit (some even go as far as to say that we value more the looks than the comfort and that's not really true actually, but whatever). And until I started uni I didn't really have enough money to be able to get the kind of clothes that would have such vibe, I really felt bad about not being dressed in a fancy enough way.

A tip from one broke european student to another: Maybe look for nice vintage pieces? Or on vinted, you can find loads of barely worn clothes for a smaller prize.
@adriannaarletasmolarek88634 жыл бұрын
@@dianana7371 It's true, I bought some good stuff from vinted like e.g. converse sneakers for something around 10€. I'm not a broke student anymore, I already work, so the problem is no longer present, but in general yes: apps and stores with 2nd hand clothes are a good option

I just started watching more KZbinrs who do fashion. I’m a very book obsessed, meaningful conversation, love learning type of person. In high school I cared a little about what I looked like but not a ton. The decade following high school my “style” became so laid back till it was nonexistent. I had associated fashion with those people who pride themselves on what they look like, who love to show off their body (in a sexual way for attention) and who love to wear makeup. (NOTE: not everyone who is obsessed with those things are vapid, but strangely all the ones I know are 🤷🏻♀️) I didn’t want to be one of those people. You are someone who has proven to me that you don’t have to like makeup or showing your boobs in order to like style. That it can stand alone. And learning this has given me something to be excited to start my day. I’d like to thank you for that!

I had a beautiful dress I kept for holidays and one day my mother-in-law made a harsh comment about how looked and it really hurt me. I wanted to keep that dress so bad but every time I looked at it, it reminded of her and the horrible comment she made so I got rid of it. I felt so much better after that. And you reminded me that I made the right decision. XX

What a shame, I sympathize. Wish it was easier to dump a toxic mother-in-law than a dress 😅

Many in the comments refer to ( overdressed) issue ! Whatever I wear people always stare at me 🤷♀️! I tried many times to make it minimal but even any 2 pieces I put together looked on me overdressed ! People need to stop hating on people taking care of themselves and what they wear ! Taking sometime to put outfit together make me confident the rest of the day and it shouldn’t be area of criticism but inspiring other to take care of themselves too 😊

Thank you so much for this video. The Overdressed advice really resonated with me. It makes me want to crawl under a rock when people - especially women - make passive aggressive remarks about you when you're smartly dressed. It makes me sooo uncomfortable and self-conscious but if I dress down I feel less confident too!

You are the best Bethany. Before I find your channel, I was buying so many clothes on sale, and I had so many, but I never wore most of them. I always hated my style and never liked my photos because of my style. I am petite and I didn't even know what is wrong with my style until I found you. Your tips are great and I just love to watch your videos over and over. Pleaseee never stop, you literally changed my life for the better

Love this video thank you so much for sharing! Two years ago your videos are what got me inspired to get all the basics I wanted for the perfect outfit. Lately I've been buying more chic and out there pieces which I wouldn't have thought to normally buy but paired with my basics they make an outfit great, exactly what you're saying in point no. 3. Love the evolution of your videos and journey, and happy to be following along! xx

Freshman year I decided to wear whatever I wanted to wear, and a lot of times that was dresses or blazes with heels and realized No One Cares. The people who do either keep that to themself (their thoughts are their business) or they are super supportive of it and vocal! Just do what you want and people will get used to it like the lady said

I’m feeling that sale price comment. I used to buy so many items that eventually ended up in a donation bag with the tags still on just because of the thrill of finding a good deal. The “maybe I’ll be bold and wear that color” or “maybe I’ll loose 5 lbs and it will fit better” mentality. Also when I did the konmari method on my clothes I found the ones that made me the most happy were the dresses. So I decided to start buying more dresses and I couldn’t be happier with my wardrobe.

i loved this video! could you also make a video about how style modest clothing on a petite body? it’s really difficult as a muslim woman coz sometimes it looks like i’m drowning in my clothes.
@karenramnath99934 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem! I’m Christian, and want to be attractive rather than on display. But being petite it’s difficult to balance not looking like a little girl with not looking overexposed.

I would love to see this...I find it soo difficult.. especially as I have a petite frame.. trousers fit okay but waistline dresses no way.. and as I like to dress modestly this is essential .. and sometimes its no point taking it to the tailor
@emilyrosewright5074 жыл бұрын
bluvelle I would also love this! I don’t love showing skin on my upper body, not for religious reasons, just personally feel more comfortable dressing modestly. But it often makes dressing hard!

Your first point about clothing being connected to a memory is totally on point with how I feel about certain pieces in my wardrobe. I have a linen jumpsuit that was the last thing my grandmother saw me wear before she passed away and for some reason a year later I still can't get myself to wear it or even look at it because it just makes me feel melancholy. What you said is giving me confirmation to let that piece go and stick with keeping only happy memories whenever I open my closet.

Instead of buying services from a tailor I recommend you get a sewing machine. Do not be overwhelmed by the Idea. I'm a complete dumbass who failed everything at school and even I have gotten reasonably good at it. I have even flipped some thrifted pieces and have been able to make my own actually fashionable maternity clothes. I am only 159cm and apple shaped and seriously struggled with jeans, so much so that I only wore leggings and over sized shirts for a decade. I started making basic adjustments to jeans and now my favorite outfit is high waisted jeans or pants and a crop top.

I loved the advice of not buying to feel accepted. One day I went to school in a skirt and received a thousand comments like: "it's nice but it's more like a New Years outfit, I would not wear it" since then I started buying things like pants so i don’t feel overdressed, but I think I will use what I like again! you inspire me! 💖 I see you from Mexico☺️☺️💕💕

Very good video. I stopped buying things just because they are on sale awhile ago. I’ve actually been shopping and trying dale items on and ended up buying the full priced item because it looked and felt better. Money well spent. Don’t let anyone tell you are overdressed, underdressed. Wear what makes you happy and feel good.

This video is SOOO helpful and thank you for the time stamps!!! I work in a very casual office work place (coding job, the guys wear cargo shorts in the summer and no one bats an eye lol) but I love getting dressed up for work. I think anyone that’s into fashion or has a more “chic” style always fears being “overdressed”, but at the end of the day who cares!! As long as you rock your style with confidence you’ll be the most interesting and beautiful person in the room 👑 Also, the thing about tailoring is so true. My waist and hip have a 12 inch difference, and I’m 5’2” so it’s hard to find good pants, but I’ve been realizing as long it fits over my hips I can take in the waist and shorten it and I’ll have an awesome piece of clothing ❤️ you are a fashion queen Bethany

You are so right about how some clothes can have some negative emotions attached to them! I just recently donated some nice clothes for this very reason. they reminded me of a toxic previous job I had.

Omg I keep having to remind myself to follow tip 3 and 4!! I initially went towards towards casual, basic pieces because of the whole minimalist, capsule wardrobe aesthetic. Specifically, I thought I wanted the neutral color palette I always saw on pinterest. But I found I constantly feel “lazy” and uninspired. Now I’m starting to realize I need more color and diverse pieces😁

A big obstacle for me before was social media and feeling like I had to be on trend for fashion all the time and spend a lot of money. Covid helped me start to love wearing more baggy clothing and upping my wardrobe to have more variety! I found got to play around with more style and add variety to my closet!

The overdressed section was totally agree... even though I had a different stories. So, all of my friends around me said i should dress like them. With a lof of accessories, and use high end products. But I really don't like the way they were dress. And I thought I was a weirdo in this community. But when I grown up, I realize my best style is casual and comfortable clothes. So what ever your style, if u are confident and comfortable with, just wear it like a queen!

This is a great topic to be talking about! ☺️ I feel really strongly about only buying things we really care about! And I actually did a video on being careful about sales because I think it’s an easy way to fall into buying things we don’t keep.. and it can be hard because sales are so common now and we feel like it’s a bargain and like we’re doing the right thing by spending less.. I think the best way to treat sales is to wait for things to come down, that way there’s less impulse buying involved! ☺️❤️ I’ve also had the issue of buying things online and then finding out after that it was a material that I’m allergic to and is really itchy on my skin.. and sometimes it’s hard to send those things back or let go of them if they look good and we like them but being comfortable in your clothing matters too! ☺️
@ws96744 жыл бұрын
great video, i loved the visual side and the fact that your advices were so personal! the funniest thing though, was that i want to start buying things, you want to limit. I thrift a lot, so i often get clothes that are “too much” to the point where i look overdressed, which is why i actually want to pick out the pieces that are chill and basic enough to work together 😅 i am also petite so i know the struggle of buying pants that fit either in waist/hips OR length, never both 😂 but i often find myself buying things i want to alter to fit me better (by myself bc $$$) but i often don’t have time to do that so i cannot wear them. thats why i want to shop more for clothes that are designed to flatter me. So interesting🙈

I do the same thing and I kick myself in the foot for it! I sometimes wonder "would xx wear this" and if the answer is no I sometimes avoid buying/wearing it. The other day, I wore a nice blouse and jeans and sandals for simple errands and when I walked into chipotle this random girl said very enthusiastically and genuinely "I LOVE your outfit!" and i smiled from ear to ear and thanked her. Just about made my day lol. It wasnt something one of my friends would wear but nonetheless I liked it and that stranger did too haha
