This is one I had to (Re) remember when I got back into Pokémon TCG back in February (with a lot more money than I had back 20 years ago). After opening far too many packs of Vivid Voltage and pulling so many of the same cards, I realized I could piece together the master set by buying the remaining 70ish cards on TCG Player.

This video really helped me. Especially the first point about narrowing down what your collecting. I realised the cards that got me back into the hobby were the alternate arts 2021-2022. There is so much depth to those cards they are basically small pieces of art. So my goals is when i get some expendable money purchase one i have my eyes on. Learnt what they were worth too and always checking ebay for good deals.

This is a great list for people. Definitely had to learn some of these things the hard way. Something else I've been saying a lot lately when I start catching that FOMO feeling is that there will ALWAYS be something else to collect. So if I don't have it in my budget, even if it seems like the best product in the world, I remind myself there's going to be another product, set or single that I will want to buy just as much in the future.

I had purchased a Evolutions booster box (the first time I have every purchased a pokemon product for myself in over a decade) and we ended up pulling the holo Charizard. At the time I had didn't even think to buy sleeves/top loaders so instead we kept the cards in an old photo album for safe keeping until some sleeves/top loaders came in the mail lol

Hey Jake i have started to collect some really beautiful Japanese full arts simply based on their beauty. I think that was a great tip in the past. I think the Japanese alternate art cards are absolutely stunning and often don't have an English counterpart. Unfortunately they are very expensive on eBay. I swear they have predetermined price negotiations amongst their sellers, because of very little price volatility and neatly no auctions, which is genius but frustrating as a buyer. Thank you for another great video.

This is super handy :) I'm just getting started but I'll be honest, I'm not huge on opening packs, I really like just collecting the booster boxes, because for me, the thing I'm drawn to the most is the acrylic cases that people put their booster boxes in and displaying the cards. I love the booster box and elite trainer boxes artwork. I want to collect just those things. I'm sure I'd love if it I did open them but recently my sister got me a small box and I found myself just wanting to keep the box in the shrink wrap all nice for a display. I don't know what to do with the excess cards if I'm not playing them and I don't consider myself a trader/flipper so they just take up space. I just like the boxes, I think I'll just sit on keeping the booster boxes for display and maybe someday my niece can sell them if she wants to :)

Thanks for the solid video Jake! I've been mostly trying to figure out what kind of sealed products would be best to acquire, so I really appreciate the advice there. I paid attention to the exclusive boxes in Japan, but I stupidly had never thought of looking at their boxes outside of those. Might have to snag a Shiny Star V now....

@@glass9437 Yeah I've been really wanting to own a box or two, just to showcase in my room and to hold onto. The Japanese boxes on top of it, well, as a part-time weeb, look far better than the English ones. That makes sense. Yeah I tend to forget how many good cards are in Shining Fates/Shiny Star V. Is there anywhere I can look up to see what sets are High Class, or is there an obvious way to tell? I wasn't aware that was a thing until you said it. This is what I get though for only really getting truly into Pokemon cards recently. Thanks for all the info!

@@glass9437 Wow, each pack!? That's pretty freaking good. October or November, cool. I'll be able to keep an eye out for the newer one coming later this year then too. I've been to Pokellector 30 times, and I never realized they had Japanese sets too. I can't believe I never noticed that. That helps a ton, and yeah you weren't kidding when you said they were huge sets. That's a ton of cards. Do you think the prices right now ($100-$120) are fair for a Shiny Star V box? Thanks again for all the help! I really appreciate it and I enjoy learning about this stuff.

@@glass9437 Truthfully, I'm not really sure if I stated it here or not, but I'm more of interested in purchasing it and just holding onto it sealed for a while. I might get a couple and maybe open up one, very much a maybe though. I'd honestly have pretty little attachment to the cards as well, besides maybe some of the shinies. That's pretty solid though overall for a box, and yeah being able to get a V card every pack is really nice. I might get addicted to it though if I bought a couple. That also would add to the addiction, if I hit a god pack LOL That's honestly insane and pretty smart on their part to do that. Now you're making me want to order 60 of these. Oh, well that's very interesting. Yeah so since those cards aren't considered SR, there's a lot of chances of getting some nice stuff. That is a pretty huge plus for Shiny Star V too, like you said. I've definitely seen the big ordeal with Eevee recently, but yeah that's good they're reprinting it in this case. It was absurdly popular, from what little I could tell, and that's an understatement. I'll be on the lookout for that and the exclusive still too. Would love to get the Eevee exclusive box but uh, kind of can't spend $600+ right now.

I’m pretty new to this hobby, been doing it for about a month and a half now and really enjoying it! I didn’t have an interest in Japanese cards at first but the more I collect the more I realize the untapped potential I’m missing out on! And a resident of the United States, is there any good way to buy reliable Japanese packs?

Good list. Personally I wish I knew more about how to spot fake cards when I started collecting and sites like tcg player and troll and toad as they can be cheaper than eBay sometimes.

I bought everything when I started collecting 6 months ago and I’m glad I did. $8000 later I have mostly everything I need and what makes me happy and now I focus my time in what I want and that’s Japanese Pokémon cards. As for English cards since I have what I like, I only collect elite trainer boxes

I'm no one card collector nor an expert in one card. I collect cards to fill up the pokedex essentially. I get the card art that I really love and that the one gets the spot (ok i lied. Sometimes i have more than one card art of a pokemon. One is usually nostalgia and the others are just pretty)
