I've had my 42" LSG pellet grill for almost a year now, and the original seal is still holding up well, but with that said, I ordered new black seals the exact same size and thickness from Amazon almost a year ago, and if and when I need to change it, I've got them. I wanted black because that white seal gets dirty looking right from the start. Good video, enjoyed it!

Thanks for taking the time to share these tips. I'm not sure that the Lone Star folks will watch your videk or read the comments, but I'm window shopping for one of these things and I just made a couple of observations. First is the ignitor/fan/firebox setup. It doesn't appear from your viewing end that there's anything but open air on the intake end of that fan assembly. Around here (South Louisiana) paper wasps and mud daubers like to build nests in some of the most unlikely places. I found a good sized nest of red wasps behind the control panel of a Weber 300 series I got to restore once. I think I counted 23 wasps killed. If there isn't some type of filter to keep wasps out of that fan assembly, I'm thinking the wasps are going to find it. We're empty nesters and we're not going to fire the thing up every day, so there would be time for wasps to get established. Maybe there is a filter of sorts to keep bugs out. If there is, please correct me. The second observation is that gasket. Just my opinion, but felt gaskets for these things are garbage. I bought a Primo Oval XL back in 2011 and it came with a felt gasket. It failed inside of a year. I replaced it with a woven gasket material made for refractory ovens and glued it on with high temperature silicone. Yeah, some say you're not supposed to use that on food cookers, but my replacement has never failed many years later, and that includes holding up with very high temperature pizza cooking and grease drips.

Thanks for watching - I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're correct, there is no screen over the fan that injects into the firebox, but you could easily put some screen door material over the bottom of the hopper assembly to screen out any wasps or daubers. Look on my channel for other videos about the door seal. I have replaced the complete door seal with a lava lock seal and it is more sturdy than the factory one. However, make no mistake - the grill is manufactured for a door seal and there needs to be one.

I chose the valve on the grease drain.... if you want to leave it wide open like all the chinese smokers, then you can. I don't clean the deflector after every cook - no need. Ther fire pit takes less than one minute to empty. This is a pellet fired offset smoker - an offset you would clean the fire box after every cook too. That's what gives superior performance and smoke. It's not nuts.

Great video on the LSG pellet...thanks for sharing. I've had my LSG 20x36 pellet for over a year and I do see some design differences (or it appears so) with the igniter. The ears on mine were bent in too far making the air flow not very good. I bent out the vertical ones about .06" and that helped mine start every time. Also with the grease bucket I fold three paper towels into it so when I get grease in it I can just throw out the paper towels every other cook, makes that clean up very easy. Thanks again!

Thank you for the quality content; I highly recommend this video to other owners or would be potential owners. As a new owner myself, I am finding significant temperature differences between the set point on the controller and the built-in Tel-Tru pit thermometer. 25-50 degrees hotter in the pit. Do you find the same and do you follow the Tel-Tru pit temp, or the controller set point for cooks?
@txbluzmn

Mine starts wonky, but levels out after about 10 min then stays solid. The other day I used the ambient probe on the grate for the first time on a turkey (high temp) cook. There was variation for sure. If you want, you can designate the ambient probe for the set point temp. (Instead of the built in.)

Thanks for showing a quick clean. i may dive in a little deeper to see what it looks like under the deflector after these cooks. The door seal concerns me a bit. @@befmx31 I love it! I've made pork shoulders, ribs, mac&cheese, burgers, chicken breast, turkey, cold smoked cheese,... Everything turns out excellent. I'm still learning things about the grill. Recently I learned about the manual pellet mode for grilling. The thing is built like a tank and it does smoke like you see in the videos. Way more smokey flavor than my old pellet smoker. I typically use Pit Boss Competition Blend because it is easy to get locally at the big box store. I am sure I could get different flavor profiles with different pellets but these seem to serve me well. Really like the Fireboard controller as well.

Thanks for the great information, I appreciate you letting me know what I don’t. I’ve decided that I’m going for the Lone Star as in investment now that I know my pitboss and need to step it up. I anticipate this will be a grill for life, and it sure looks like it will. I’m wondering about the door seal now, sounds like a weak point that Chris can improve. Not sure if that really makes that big of a deal, since I’m not a bit worried if some smoke comes out the seal. It might be a big deal to the way the smoker works, so I would appreciate any learnings you can share. This is a once and done, but I think this has the right stuff. Thanks again.

@@txbluzmn thanks for the reply and I watched you video last night and I’ve already scoped out the new seal material on Amazon based on what you instructed. I’m wondering why Chris wouldn’t have selected something more like a fire rated rope material like on all of our boiler and fired heaters at the plant. They take a beating and last for a very long time. It is true that they need to be changed as well, because they get brittle. In any case I’ll definitely tell Chris that you sent me to LS grills. Feels like I know him already. I’m wondering if he would swivel lock castors on all the legs rather than just two. For a patio that is right for such a big rig, it would work wonders. @txbluzmn
@txbluzmn 10 ай бұрын
They suggest cleaning the drain after every cook, but I don't. It's far enough away from the fire that there's little fear of a grease fire and so you can go a couple cooks depending on what you're cooking. I wouldn't bother wrapping the deflector in foil. It cleans up MUCH easier than my old Traeger deflector (which actually never came completely clean) and it's heavy! If you do scrape burnt drippings into the grease drain on the end, it is hard to clean them out. Thanks!!

Great information! Two questions for you. 1. Is your grill the 36inch and do you ever wish you had the 42 inch? I have a Traeger ironwood 885 and I think it’s pretty good size for me. $200 extra seems like a good deal, but not if it’s a mammoth and overkill. 2. Traeger ironwood just drips grease into the bucket during the cook. A. Why buy the ball valve and B. Why not just take it off and let it drip like the Traeger does? Any benefits to the ball valve? Thanks awesome video!
@txbluzmn
@txbluzmn 7 ай бұрын
Thanks!! 1. I have the 36" and have never regretted it. That said, I came from a 22" Traeger so I quadrupled the amount I can cook with this and at the time I bought mine, the 42 was $300 more. Also my space is limited and this one fits perfectly. 2. If you're just rolling yours up on the back deck and leaving it there, then I don't see you ever needing the Ball valve. you can just let it drip in the bucket like your Traeger. If you ever plan on rolling it up on a trailer and taking it somewhere else for a cook, then the valve is valuable. You could also just go to the hardware store and buy a cap for those times (could get messy), but for $25 I just went ahead and got it. Hope this helps!!

Hi Paul, Just wanted to share another tid bit of information...I have a LSG 36" pellet smoker...I ordered the grill grates along with some other extras. Lone Star Grillz sends out grill grates that cover the entire bottom shelf...However, only the first 3 grill grates (Next to the firebox) gets hot enough to sear...the further away from the firebox...the cooler it gets. Of course your paying for a full set but in reality...your only using half of them... Are they worth buying them from LSG...no (not in my opinion) It would be cheaper just to buy a set with 3 plates instead of 6 1/2 plates. Also, you don't need to buy the rack that holds the plates either...you can just set them on the grates... Just my experience with them

I only use manual mode when I sear steaks. otherwise, the smoker manages the auger.

Are you still having an issue with ash buildup in the firebox? Do you still have to empty the firebox after each cook?
@txbluzmn
@txbluzmn Жыл бұрын
Never an Issue - it's a feature! :) I always empty the firebox after long cooks. I've gotten away with not emptying it after I cook chicken, steaks, or sausage. The ash has to go somewhere and like I showed in the video - it's quick and simple to empty it! With other brands, you have to dismantle the whole grill and use a vacuum.

Thanks for the video. Really torn between this grill, a Yoder 640S, and a Timberline 850. The timberline is only a contender because it is double walled. I live in Colorado, so winter definitely happens here. I know you are in Texas, but have you had the chance to use this LSG in cold weather? How did it go?

Struggling mightily with my new YS640. Comp cart and everything. Don't recommend one. 60 degrees off from pit temperature inside the grill, and if I had not bought from a great retailer I suspect their customer service would be continuing to deflect and send me literature. Retailer got them to replace basically every part of the grill (thermocouple, controller, fans) and it is still getting more and more erratic. You might not have issues with yours if you get one, but feel compelled to share my experiences. It has been frustrating and disappointing all around.

They are good smokers. Similar manufacturing process but they use a proprietary fireboard controller that isn't as extensive as the fireboard 2 that is included with the Lone Star Grillz. I've never actually cooked on one so it would be personal preference I would imagine

Nice video, thanks - I have my 36 on order so I’m trying to learn all I can before it gets here. Would it be possible to fold some tinfoil over the seal when you pull the rack out to ensure grease doesn’t drip on it? Also, I keep going back and forth between the 36 and 42. Do you think you could fit enough pork butts on your 36 to feed 15-20 people at a time? That’s probably as big a crowd as I would ever have.
@txbluzmn
@txbluzmn 2 жыл бұрын
Great! I actually suggested the tin foil over the edge in one version of this video before it ended up on the cutting floor... the short shot of me running my hand over the edge was that very comment! HA!! I'm happy with my 36". I came from a 22" Traeger that would hold only 2 butts, the 36" can easily hold 8. 2 would easily feed 15 HUNGRY folks, so yes - the 36 will do ya!

This looks like a tremendous amount of pit cleaning after each and every cook. I’m sure it’s a quality pellet cooker but this makes me want to stay with my offset stick burner…
@txbluzmn
@txbluzmn 2 жыл бұрын
it's not. You don't have to scrape the deflector after every cook - you can empty the grease as often as you do on your offset, and you do have to clean out your firebox after every cook on your offset - and it's much easier on this smoker to do that.

Pit cleaning is mandatory with any pit, maybe little more critical with a pellet cooker. Use a shop vacuum to simplify the process. If you like to cook and sleep, get a pellet grill.
