Learn why Norwegians are scared about going abroad.? When Norwegians rent a vacation home, we dream about how fantastic it will be. But, as soon as we enter the house, the horror starts! What might seem familiar to you, is like Fear Factory to us. You will learn about Norwegian way of life, through a typical Rent-a-House-Abroad. Death traps like tiles, floors, tap water, gas and toilets force us to visit the doctor everyday.

There’s an electric kettle right next to the stove! Why do you need to boil a dipper of water to make tea??? Lol. You remind me of the time I told a couple of Irish farmers that where I come from, we live in wooden houses. They are appalled! “Don’t they catch fire??” They ended up deciding that when you live in a wooden house, you must get used to being really really careful all the time. Lol

If a tile is "shiny" or polished (like those in the video) it should never be used as a floor tile. Many countries seem to overlook this (perhaps because they are easy to wipe clean) but wet shiny tiles are deathtraps! It is possible to buy textured tiles that don't become slippery when wet (but they are much more difficult to clean).

@@YOURWAY2NORWAY Ceramic tiles in new homes is now common here in Canada and I had a neighbour who actually died form a brain injury after slipping and hitting his head on it. My aunt and uncle are older and their dr told them they will crack a knee cap or break their hip so they are tearing theirs up and replacing it with good old fashioned linoleum like I have. Using any hard tiles is the stupidest trend ever, Norwegians have it right!

I'm always spilling food when I'm cooking, and you never know when the toilet is going to overflow. I HATE carpeting! It's the worst thing you can put on the floor. It traps hair, dirt, dust, pet dander, mites, insect vermin, and whatever we drag in on our shoes. No amount of vacuuming or shampooing can get it completely clean. I wish I could rip out all the carpeting in my place. There are wooden floors underneath. I know this because the landlord has been renovating the building and he pulls out all the carpeting and linoleum and refinishes the wood underneath. Unfortunately, he also charges a lot more for the renovated rooms. :o/

ha! I was thinking the same thing - actually, I was thinking "I hope that's his real house and not a real rental because it's kinda rude for him to do that stuff intentionally in somoene else's house." The egg was ok (minus the way he spread it all over the floor and the mop, so I hope he was decent enough to really clean the floor and the mop with hot soapy water). But the glass bottle was a bit rude. There were tiny glass pieces EVERYWHERE and then he stepped on some pieces - probably embedding some shards in his shoes and transferring them to other areas of the house. When you break glass - you have to carefully sweep everything up and diligently look for where broken slivers and shards are. You might have to sweep a couple of times with a large then a detailed broom. Then you have to mop the floor really well and carefully discard that dirty water that might have loads of shards in it - not to mention the fibers of the mop head. I hope he buys them a new mop. I would hate to rent that house after him and decide to clean the place up first, mop, then wring that out and get cut with the glass in there.

@@saammmy7 We are in the continent of Europe of course, we all know that, but a lot of people have never felt particularly European, probably because we are an island nation. I guess also partly because of our past, the Empire. About a quarter of the world was part of our Empire so we were more used to others being part of us rather than Britain being part of something. We are also quite different culturally. We have more in common culturally with Australia, New Zealand, America etc than with continental or Eastern Europe say. Likewise France has more in common with Belgium or Switzerland than Britain. Romania has more in common with Bulgaria and Hungary, than with Britain. I'm guessing your question was because I said "when brits went to Europe," yes? We have no antipathy for Europe. The EU may be a different matter but I think our history shows our deep relationship with Europe. Our experiences of war will always bind us. Only 15% of Brits freely described themselves as European (lowest of all EU countries) whilst 64% claimed they felt in no way European at all. That was the latest Eurobarometer survey by Natcen social research. I'm not sure it matters though. Do you?

As a crazy Norwegian living abroad, I totally relate to the humor of this video. My mother brought the Norwegian mops here with her and we've been using them ever since. It's such a great cleaning system that I also take it with me wherever I go. We cook with gas here, but the fear never really leaves you. Our home is layered with scatter mats and rugs, so slippery floors are not a problem at home, but cleaning includes carrying rugs out to be beaten on a line outside. We don't slip on slippery floors, but we do trip on the loose edges of overlapping mats and rugs. Water is a concern wherever we travel, because we don't want to be trapped within a few feet of the bathroom. It's not the tap water, because that can be boiled and filtered, but if we eat out they may have used tap water to make the ice for our drinks or to rinse the vegetables for a raw salad... better to eat and drink what we prepare ourselves. The bidet is also very strange.. It's hard to wrap your brain around it.

I hate electric stoves. No self-respecting chef prefers electric. My mother loved to cook, when she moved to FL she installed a gas range in the kitchen. When her area was hit by a hurricane, she had a parade of neighbors cooking in her kitchen. They had electric stoves and the power was out for over a week. I also like bidets, we always had one.

I have to admit that I have many of the fears you have about "foreign" homes. In 35 years I have rented 2 or 3 houses with gas, either gas heating or gas water heaters. The first house I never used the gas heat (luckily the house was in Florida) as I was afraid of leaks and explosions. Another house that I rented had a gas water heater in a little sort of box outside the front door. For some reason the pilot light would go out about every other month. I used to call the landlord to relight it, then I decided to try it myself....it scared me, but I did it. I am also freaked out by breaking glass. I dropped a glass on the floor once, missed a piece, stepped on it, and thought that I was going to bleed to death before I got a bandage on it. I therefore NEVER use glass drinking glasses. Finally, sometimes what looks like tiled floor is really just one piece of linoleum. In my bathroom, the floor is linoleum but is patterned to look like tile. In the kitchen there is "wood" flooring. BTW, living in Florida, the water can be "different" from one town to the next, even from one neighborhood to the next, depending on whether you have a water well or connections to a city sewer system. So many of your fears are shared with many other people outside Norway.

I love these videos! I'm from Louisiana in the US and I don't think I've ever even seen an electric stove in someones house. I probably wouldn't know how to use one if I had too lol. And our water here is disgusting, we wouldn't dream of drinking tap water. Every few years or so we have a brain eating amoeba scare! Thankfully my house is on a separate water source from the main city (its more of a town, its about 30 miles across) water supply, so my family and I have never had to deal with super dangerous contaminants. Its definitely healthier and safer to live in the country here. But the best water comes from the natural springs in our very large national forest, Kisatchie. There are still people that go into the forest just to get the clean water.

You also call emergency. Also,CO detectors are required in apartments and highly recommended for houses. In fact the Fire Department gives them out every year. 😂😂, the one next to the tiolet is a Bidet to wash your dierrier. I remember the time when I visited family in a small Philippine town, back in the mid-2000s when I was a teenager. Very different from our home in Canada. The house was an old "Bahay na Bato" house, which is a simple, wooden house with sliding, non-glass windows, corrugated galvanized iron roof, and cinder bottom floor. The inside is not completely sealed from outdoor air, which means that it can get chilly and mosquitoes could get in pretty easily, which is why we had to have mosquito nets over our beds, during the time. I absolutely HATED mosquitoes. There was no proper sink and faucet anywhere in the house. Instead, it only had an old-timey farm pump which we poured water into buckets and jugs and where we did our laundry. As for the bathroom, instead of a shower, bathtub, sink, and sit-down toilet, it had a large bucket and pail to dump cold water onto yourself to clean yourself, with the excess water being drained to a hole in the wall, and the toilet was a short, squatty-potty with a risen toilet seat over it. Instead of an electric-powered stove and oven, there is only a gas stove. Those differences were a big shocker for me, at the time, since I've been growing up in Canada. I hated that house and the times I've spent staying in it. Now, the family has finally decided to tear it down and build a newer house on the property. Newer Philippine homes are much better: they still use gas stoves, but they have proper bathrooms with showers, sinks, and toilets, sinks with ACTUAL faucets, air-conditioning, glass windows, and properly-sealed, cinder walls. We have a townhouse in Metro Manila with all of those features, but the family has been living in that old house in the small town for at least 3 generations, so I understand how close the property is to their hearts. The teenager inside me is very happy about the fact that the old house is being replaced by a newer, better one! :) Still, the cold water can be hard to get used to. Most Philippine homes don't have hot water taps, even the newer ones.

On rare occations we use 1$ disposable grill, but only outside if the sun is shining. The sun makes us so happy because it's rare and the only thing that isn't taxed yet exept air and masturbation. We would NEVER cook!! That involves gas, and Norwegians are terrified of gas. In fact, for many years now we franticly been trying to get rid of all the dangerious gas in our costal areas by safely pumping it up and sell it to you mad people so you may do your cooking at a safe distance.

You guys DO have the best water in the world. When I visited, I used to get up in the middle of the night and sneak into the kitchen and just stood at the sink, drinking one glass after another. Pure, perfect delicious ... a poetic experience! Mountain fresh in real time!

I grew up with a gas stove. Every once in a while it would sort of leach out gas if you didn't turn it on right and then when you did, the flame would shoot out. I was always terrified of it. It wasn't that dramatic but for a kid, it definitely was. Like my mom would do it without flinching. You have to push the knob hard and turn and if you don't it just leaks gas. So when you turn it on, it starts a really high flame. I'd be standing like six feet away reaching over in my tippy toes while my mom was just like "yah fuckin wimp *turn*" Shoutout to all the kids who grew up with them and would be terrified if it made that clicky sound because you knew gas had come out and the flame would be high. 😂

Your fear of the gas stove was even funnier given the proximity of the electric kettle right next to it on the counter. Brilliant comedy!

I grew up using gas stoves and wood stoves. I actually prefer gas over electric every time. Great video btw.

Tile and marble floors make the houses cooler in hot climates. Puerto Rico is an Island in the Caribbean Sea. I would also love to see a vlog on Norway’s size, population, etc.

My husband keeps trying to convince me to tile the entire house. We live in Nebraska. If we tiled the house, it would be constantly wet. You can't just take design elements that work in one climate and move it to a new climate.

I have neighbors in their 90’s and my mother who is 83 are all still alive after a lifetime of tile floors, gas stoves and tap water. In fact the worst diarrhea I ever got was moving to Denmark. Because no matter what there is bacteria in all water but our bodies adjust to the local bacteria and new bacteria upsets the system. I got sicker in Denmark than I did two years later in Mexico.

Hahaha, we love your story about the old brave tribe of hard hitting tile seniors. They have our total respect!! And you also have a valid point about the water. Norwegians think that our water is crystal clean all over our country. It is not. Old, rusty pipes and dead animals in the water source makes a lot of people sick. Probably the same in Denmark. But you know, perception is reality - at least when we are going abroad ;) Thanks a lot for sharing Oleander Pink

Tiles everywhere is common in China as well. Particularly polished, shiny, slippery stone tiles, marble if they can afford it. It's a way to show affluence. But for bedrooms wood is the aspirational floor material (stone is not the most pleasant floor to get out of the bed to. Regular apartments wouldn't have stone (too expensive), but would still be tiled.

I wouldn't get a gas stove either. It is rare that a house or entire apartment explodes but it does happen (recently in Toronto). But lose a wrench in a nuclear facility then there's a government inquiry.
