Omg!! I live in SoCal too!!! I just lost my job due to covid. I was a Senior Event Manager for Marriott. I worked for 15 years and have done every type of event, social, corporate, weddings. Outside catering weddings etc. I have decided to use my job loss and start my own event planning business. It so weird but even though I have so much experience with the hotel event planning experience I am so nervous and don’t know where to start with my own business. I am watching all your videos and look forward to making this happen even through covid. Hope all is well!

I know this was a few years ago now, but I thought I would chime in with my comment anyways :P I see everyone saying that it takes up so much of your time, and you don't get to spend it with family. I just started my business and I must have started it in the OFF season because I haven't had a single client yet...I get discouraged some days, but then I am just eager to start lol. I just opened this month, so I am trying to stay positive and work on my stationary, I have a website and business cards, made socials for the business and just wish I could book someone soon. How long did it take to book your first client??

I would recommend starting your website first and foremost, maybe reaching out to a local planner or firm and asking if you can do an apprenticeship to gain experience. Or you can start volunteering to plan your close ones events. My guide is helpful for getting your. business started from the ground up, links are in the bio! 💕

I think some people are not cut out to be event planners because they just are unable to plan things ahead and they take things one day at a time (related to the second one) or they are not very detail-oriented. More long-term planning is difficult for me but I'm working on it. It's best to work backwards from the event and decide when different things need to be done so that everything is done on time, and allow yourself extra time in case things go wrong.

Girl!!! The rude and needy clients!!!! Like you said, I mostly get amazing clients but I’m dealing with a doozy right now. I’m looking into incorporating corporate events into my business. Have you thought of doing that?
@BashBesties5 жыл бұрын
Same, most of my clients are a dream, but occasionally you’ll get the doozy like you said...that you probably knew you shouldn’t have booked in the first place 😩😂 Isn’t it funny how you can usually spot them right off the bat by their tone, questions, or mannerisms. I’ve learned to spot them ahead of time and I’m like “Thank you for your inquiry, but I’m not taking on any more clients at this time.” Occasionally one slips through, I had one last year and I refunded her deposit and cordially sent her on her way. I appreciate and treat equally all my prospective clients, but I just can’t deal with those that don’t respect me, my business, or my craft.... You better get them corporate checks sis!! Yasss!!🙌🏼🙌🏼 Girl I have thought, I get inquiries and the budgets are insane sometimes. 😮 I turn most down because I’m focusing on this side of my business right now and perfecting my children’s one so that hopefully it can almost run on autopilot someday soon. I’m a perfectionist and a stress ball so I can’t juggle too many major career changes at once without losing my mind 🤦🏽♀️🤣

i gave up event planning 10 years ago. it was the best decision of my life. Sure, the money is good but the stress and anxiety is not worth it. 80% of clients are rude and throw tantrums if they don't get their way. They also watch you like a hawk 24/7 to ensure that every detail is done OVER and above their already strenuous expectations. The very last event i planned, the client got mad when i forgot the candles. I rang the client and argued with them saying "that's whats you get if you don't tip. Pay peanuts and you get peanuts.'' This enraged them. Had to laugh. It was the end of 12 years of stress for me!
@BashBesties4 жыл бұрын
I completely understand what you’re saying. I do believe that although anyone can plan or learn to plan actual events, a career in event planning is just not sustainable mentally for everyone, (especially if you run a small business and not a firm with a lot of help). I try to offer people the tips on how to create a business that works with their passions and lifestyles so that they don’t run into the kinds of issues you described repeatedly and get discouraged, but as you know well running into problem clients is inevitable. People have to know what’s right for their soul, glad you were able to make the decision that was right for your happiness and mental health!

I can relate to this so much. Been doing events for 14 years. The amount of stress and anxiety you experience, hard work during set ups and breakdown, hours on the road at times and clients who refuse to pay is enough for me to give it up. Ill rather branch out into equipment rentals. It truly is a thankless job.

Question: how does vacation work for you?
@BashBesties3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t 😆...no but seriously I usually take time off during the holidays. I have children so sometimes I must take time off because they are home on vacation from school, but I usually just fit time like that in on the fly. Taking a vacation has never been made a priority for me, which is why I used to experience a lot of. burnout and get really stressed out. Now I’m more selective of the parties I take on, so I’m able to squeeze in time off and usually take longer “vacation” breaks during the holiday season because generally client requests slow down then anyways.
@deburritocanales46183 жыл бұрын
@@BashBesties thank you very very much! I just want to know what I’ll be getting into if I decide on this career.
@BashBesties3 жыл бұрын
I think in this business taking a vacation is totally necessary and worth scheduling out. The nice thing is it is a more flexible career and there is the opportunity to do so since you make your own calendar. It’s just a lot of times you might schedule something and then a client calls for that exact date and you may not want to pass up the money or the opportunity. You just have to make sure to let them know you’re unavailable. For me sometimes in the past I’d just cancel my time off and take the party...which can be really bad for your mental health. In this industry it’s really important to take time off when you need it especially if you’re running a small biz where everything lands on you. 😊

Will event management will work after the covid 19 thing?
@BashBesties4 жыл бұрын
Yes of course, COVID 19 will pass eventually. Just because people haven’t been able to have in person events it doesn’t mean they don’t want to..there will always be a job for event planners it may just look different in the future. Now event managers in business settings may be a little different and many businesses will probably keep with the virtual aspect as they’ve done during COVID for the most part from here on out. But that doesn’t mean there’s not a place or need for an event manager within the new post COVID event space either.

🤔 I've helped with two weddings but this is something I thought I'd grow up to do.... I'm on the fence I want to make beautiful events but for like three years I'm undecided. (the weddings I did were exhausting and I kind of hated it, but the potential greatness keeps me wondering...) Possibly going into finance and just host parties. Idk 😐
@BashBesties6 жыл бұрын
Well, the best thing you can do if you're unsure is research and experimenting. You are already doing both, so you're on the right track! I think the potential to create amazing events is what keeps a lot of people fantasizing about being an event planner. (Myself included.) If I'm honest with myself, I have a love/hate relationship with my profession. I love planning, decorating, and creating and the end result. I hate the level of stress it causes me and weekends away from my family. So, what I've done is started to tailor my business and my profession as a whole to what I feel comfortable more with and what makes me happy. Not what I'm required to be by industry or society standards. I'm building my own event planning career! I always dream of doing amazing high end luxury events with big budgets like you see all over Pinterest, but then I think about the amount of time and stress that would be to produce an event like that, and it steers me away every time. So, you have to decide what makes you happy in this industry if you choose to pursue it! Maybe it's taking smaller scale social events, rather than weddings. Maybe it's being a part time planner, taking only 1 or 2 events a month, or every other month. Just enough to explore your creative outlet and/or bring in a little extra cash. Just know that you can be whatever kind of planner you want! Best wishes!
