I would add a few to this... 1) GSD's are immense shedders twice a year (Spring/Fall) If you don't groom them everything in your house will be covered in hair. Everything. 2) GSD's want to be with you. All the time. No. Really. All the time. Much more than any other breed I have had in my lifetime. They will follow you everywhere. You will not be able to turn around without having to make sure you don't stumble into/over them. If you don't want a dog to be within 3 feet of you at all times... don't get a GSD. 3) They are prone to separation anxiety. They won't bark/shred furniture etc. like other breeds because of it, but they will get stress diarrhea easily and shed massive amounts of hair due to the stress. KNOW THIS. It is imperative to associate someone who will watch the dog when you are gone or familiarize them with a kennel very-very early and often. Otherwise everytime you go somewhere, you will have a sick dog that is super stressed upon your return. GSD's are great dogs. They are smart, loyal, humorous, playful, loving and beyond all else - devoted to you. Not to mention superior guard dogs, you will always feel that bit of security when it is around. BUT - know this is not a dog that you can get and basically ignore. It will not be a "silent companion". GSD's demand attention, activity and play time. If you don't want a dog you have to interact with every day.... DON"T GET A GERMAN SHEPHERD.

@garysanders28724 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I came across a little harsher than intended. It's just that our GSD is a rescue dog. I have seen many GSD's in shelters because people got them for their beauty and "regalness" not knowing anything about this breed which is very different than other breeds. I just want people to be informed, like you. Cheers!
@drivernephi22124 жыл бұрын
Bit of an exaggeration on the separation anxiety part. That does happen yes, but it's not like it's daily, weekly or even monthly. They also do thrash furniture which is far more common than the stress diarrhea, which I've only seen maybe about dozen times for the 20 years I had GSD's in the house. Although we had three instead of one, so I'm going to guess that the separation anxiety is worse when the dog is completely alone.

Had one of those karens at a local town dog show when i was a kid, we had a doberman at the time, got our shepherd later, but this lady had a chiwawa who was barking up a storm at our doberman, he was super tolerant of that little ankle biter, kept looking at it, then at us, after he did that about 5 times he finally had enough and gave 1 bark at the small dog, who yelped and ran behind its owners legs, ours just layed down for some belly rubs after that, but the lady gave us a look that very clearly said we were in the wrong, packed her things and moved.

At least she moved away, I was expecting her to call animal control on your poor buddy. I _hate_ when people vilify big or medium-sized dogs for so much as _barking nonaggressively_ at someone or something yet they allow their purse dogs to bark aggressively, growl, and bite people and other animals and people and either tolerate it or _even worse_ think it's funny or "brave". I have _nothing_ against smaller dog breeds, just when people allow them to exhibit vicious behaviors.
@anonyme48813 жыл бұрын
The thing is the bigger the dog the more serious you have to be when you educate them because otherwise they will be more or less dangerous. With a small dog like a Chihuahua you just have them to be clean because their bite are less dangerous. The only problematic dog I saw when going out with my Husky was mainly small dog. (And one dangerous Labrador without lash)

As a first time dog owner and a male German Shepherd owner I must agree with these facts. I was fortunate enough to be a strong leader but had countered a dog fight while at an off leash park attacked by another female German Shepherd. This breed is not for everyone if you cannot give it the proper guidance. Because of that dog, mine now has trauma from being around another dogs having heavy anxiety. If you are getting one please discipline very well.

Nicely done. Beautiful girl. We adopted a 6 year old male GSD from family members several years ago. He went from a lazy chunky city boy to a svelte farm dog in months. I wish we had watched your video before... Sadly we lost him to bloat just 10 days ago. We didn't know what was wrong, and he was acting just a little off, but very quickly became weak and distressed. We rushed him to the Vet ER but he died during emergency surgery. Now there's a big hole in our hearts and lives.

My wife and I have owned German Shepherds for many years. Your point about being the boss is spot on. All dogs are pack animals to some degree; German Shepherds are pack animals more than most. In a pack there's got to be a pack leader. If you don't fill those shoes, your dog will.

ANY time I first meet one though I treat them with total respect because they can be VERY intimidating dogs. One family I've delivered to has one that absolutely loves to run with me for fun and another one loves to lay down and have me rub its belly. They are incredible dogs when they're raised properly and that's for sure.

I hate to bring a negative to this, but as someone who has owned 5 of these wonderful dogs during my life, there is one point which I think people should be aware of - unfortunately German Shepherds are very prone to hip dysplasia, so much so that I have lost 3 of those 5 dogs due to it (they had to be put down, which have been the worst moments of my life). Due to this I took what I thought to be extra precautions when choosing the last of those dogs - sought out a reputable breeder, had relevant x-rays done at intervals when he was young, careful with his diet - but still the disease kicked in when he was older and he lost the ability to walk by 9 years old (which is not that old). Maybe I was just unlucky and this isn't to say all GSD's will get it, but it is a reality which you may have to face one day. That said, it's been a few years now but I'm hoping to get another one in the future, I love GSD's so much.

Lucy's falling asleep...lol A little Karen story for y'all Kona my Shepherd and I are staying at a motel cabin across from another cabin. Every day for a week we are greeted with 2 Chihuahuas running up to their fence Bark!Bark!Bark! non-stop even as we drive way. Meanwhile Karen is tuttutting them and Kona tho aware of them never does a thing other than a few whines always sticking to training. Day 8 we have had enough crap from these yappy rats. I tell Kona to go over to say hello she trots over gives them 3-4 loud sharp barks which shut them up and then comes back. We leave with Karen screeching crap about a vicious dog. On our return Allen, Karen's husband meets us and says my dog tho obviously trained is a danger to others and that it had upset his wife. Also large dogs should not be allowed places like this He insisted I put Kona on a leash. I suggested he should train his rats as dogs and not treat them like babies. I told him all my dog did was teach them some manners. I could see he was getting angry but he stopped and left after Kona let out a low growl. And yes we got a visit from the manager who asked me to leash my dog when outdoors. Happy Ending!We love Lucy! 👍😎🐶🐾

Any time she is out of town, my dog understands the boundaries with me. Watching your video just reinforce my connection with my dog. We humans assume too much. Thank you for sharing. German Shepherds are amazing dogs to have especially as house dogs even though they are working dogs. Connect with them, understand them, and make sure they understand you. There is no need for aggressive training. That negative energy will only be needed in life or death situations.

Soo true. Have to say Lucy Lane is beautiful and trained to a high level. I watch and think maybe I should have put in the effort to get to gold. Milo my German Shepherd was up to the task - unfortunately I wasn't. Having to adjust his sit by side and movement - well let's just say I am not great on the attention to detail needed. (He is watching me now as if to say he could have been a star - if his mom wasn't such a disappointment). The one thing I do love about the breed - is how versatile they are. Last year we competed locally in freestyle to music and this year we have been doing scent work. Next year maybe something new - we both love learning and trying out new things :)

Anyways with them having such a busy schedule followed by a newborn child, they couldn’t give him the time he deserved so my mom offered to take him. He’s certainly a vocal dog and is still in that velociraptor stage but we love having him around.

This is soooo true. I had one lady kick my dog because her 3 “teacup” French bulldogs (off leash) ran up to my dog (in focused heel) and were basically hanging off his face with their teeth. Then she has the audacity to tell me her dogs are in training and MY dog should be on leash. Small dog privilege is real.

Hi im thinking of getting a GSD and just want to know your opinion on wether i should, i own a cockapoo who isn’t overly friendly but never gets aggressive apart from barking at certain dogs from a distance from what i guess is fear, she is quite jealous especially of my cat and will go out of her way to steal a spot from my cat to lay on. Its hard to put together but i have the time and want to put all the effort i can into properly training a GSD but im just not sure if going for a more easy family dog like a lab would be better
@Mewtwo128103 жыл бұрын
@@Zzz-wu5df do you leave home a lot?? German Shepherds have a hard time leaving their masters. They are busybodies that want to know what you are doing all the time so they can help out. If you are unsure, I also have a lab mix and I would say he is equally as rewarding. He honestly is the “best” dog I’ve ever had and convinced me that labs are by far the most people pleasing and easygoing. Labs still need a lot of exercise, about 1-2 hours a day but they need less enrichment as they don’t have as much of a need to achieve goals as most GSD need. A lab/golden would be a good step into the sporting/hunting dog personality as they require exercise and training, but have a little bit less of an edge brain-wise.

@@Mewtwo12810 thanks for the reply and atm i have no real commitments that will pull me away from a GSD for long as well as i dont live alone so it would be rare for her to be completely alone. I actually put a deposit down on a gsd puppy last night :) im sure i can give her the best possible life and all the attention and exercise they require. I guess im just more so worried about how they are with older dogs in the home and cats but i guess that’s different for all of them. Im rambling a lot lol but any advice on raising a gsd puppy would be appreciated !

When I was 12 I had a part time job dog-walking two GSD's that were owned by my mum's friend who owned an antique shop. The dogs were trained, but not specifically as guard dogs. One day I was walking the white GSD who was quite old and we went on our usual walk past my school, where a classmate joined me. I wouldn't really call her a friend, but a few minutes into our walk I said something that made her laugh and she pushed me away. A millisecond later the dog leaped and flung her against a Volvo and gripped her arm. Not enough to break the skin, but he stood up on his rear legs, snarling and growling. He obeyed when I told him to leave, but I was really surprised to see he had a protective streak in him considering I'd only walked him for a couple of months and he was already about 9 years old. Girl was fine if a bit shaken up, but it really showed me how you can't mess around with those dogs especially with a stranger. I felt a lot safer walking through quiet country lanes after that!

Wouldn't think Lucy's at risk for GDV at this point. It's usually overweight, older dogs, And it's not just food intake either. It can definitely be from gulping too much water after exercise. You can do a prophylactic gastropexy to keep this from happening.

Hey thats great information. I wasn't sure if gulping water can contribute as well. Thanks for your great comment. You sound very knowledgeable.

She’s coming from good working lines, if I can juggle other commitments my intention is to train her / us in IGP. Keep up the good work flying the flag for responsible GSD ownership.

Thank you sooooo sooooo much for continuing to make these darling vedios! You will never know the impact they have made on my life & so many others during Covid-19. It sounds silly right? Everything has opened up,but do to your skilled hand & your beautiful dogs & your tailored directing of your channel it increased & continued our pleasure of your viewers! Everything that you put into each vedio: the funny sound effects, cool hip music & subject matter all of those things make each "show" unique and different from any other things found on KZbin. I have to wait to purchase my Western GSD. Watching your dogs helps me to be patient & enjoy your dogs in the meantime lol. Thank you very much 4 all your time & effort. Good luck on your up coming move. May you & your husband be deeply & richly blessed!

The way to work out if your german shepperd can walk/ eat is: wait 30 minutes after a walk to eat, and wait 1hr after food to walk. A good way to remember this is that a heavy stomach is less likely to correct itself on its own. If your GSD has eaten, let them rest and digest all that food so that when their stomach flips over, it can flip back easily (cuz their stomach is empty). After they walk, it is best to wait for some time after the walk to let the stomach right itself - its probably fine, but 30 minutes just gives it that extra time to let the stomach right itself.

I've had two German Shepherds and you are so correct, If you don't assume the alpha position, the dog will. This is true with any breed, however if you do it right from day one with a GSD, the return on investment is tremendous. It's not the dog that needs to be trained initially, it's the human that does; a human that's willing to learn the wolf-pack mentality and be willing to make the necessary commitment. By the way, German Shepherds are not, I repeat NOT inherently aggressive. They are incredibly intelligent, loving and loyal and will do anything you train them to do. I hate so-called "attack" training. It's just not necessary and runs the risk of making tragically necrotic perhaps greatest breed of all time.

I’m happy I watched this I’ve always wanted a German Shepard although my mom likes smaller dogs while I love big dogs so you can see how that can be a problem I’ve been asking for one for Christmas which i hope I get one I do things around the house etc as a way to show I’m mature enough and put in effort to show i really do want this dog I have two other dogs but they aren’t technically mine but as I said I’ve done research and im happy I saw this bc I had no idea that could happen to their stomach I really do love these dogs im still in school but I also workout so it’s no biggie for me to walk my Shepard around for 90 minutes bc I need that walk myself too LOL and I absolutely love teaching dogs tricks these are by far the most amazing animals I will do literally anything to get one and I will update this around Christmas to see if I got one and Ik all abt the shedding but the two other dogs I mentioned aren’t small and they are more medium sized but still on the larger side but if I pet them I can literally see hair flying off them as I pet them and I’m no stranger to dog hair being on the floor or on literally anything they touch as well as the fact that I want a dog that wants to be around me 24/7 i do not want personal space when it comes to my pets but I do know that I should try to not be around them all the time bc it could result I separation anxiety and obviously I’ll be around them a lot bc they require lots of attention etc but I cannot be that person who literally takes my dog every where and can’t even leave it by itself for 5 minutes separation anxiety isn’t always horrible it could be mild but I’ve seen very bad separation anxiety in a dog before and it’s really hard to deal with especially let’s say you want to go somewhere and you don’t the dog out so you put them in the kennel and they start screaming bc your not there I’ve seen it get so bad to the point the dog learned how to open unlocked doors bc they couldn’t stay out in a room alone without their owner

Good video Zac. When I feed Rosie her cooked chicken breast food dinner I pull it apart and give it to her in 3 individual servings usual with some cooked pumpkin and or carrots mashed in with the chicken, so she doesn't guts it down in one go. I totally aware of the bloating stomache issues. I let her be a dog and sniff everything in the open land we walk on lead but when we get to the road I tell her it's time to walk together and she walks by my left side. I think it's easier to obedience training and socialise your dog from a puppy. My first German shepherd Max who I got as a puppy in 1991 was very sociable with people and dogs and very well behaved. My rescue dog Rosie who I own now and is the same age as Lucy is totally different, barks at people and other dogs always on guard duty at home, so she is a work in progress as she was abused then neglected by her previous owner. She may never like other dogs which some dogs are like that, but she has been trained that she cannot bark at people on our walks and just turns back a few times once we pass them to check they are still walking away. This is part of a dog's protective instinct especially in German Shepherds to look after their pack which includes all family members. I have owned Rosie now since just after Easter but it's a long journey to deal with the trauma she suffered as a puppy and the first two years of her life. Rosie is a beautiful dog, intelligent, kind and loving with me, she licks my face for no reason as her tail wags at a million miles an hour and I get the same result when I tell her its time for a walk. People like the Karen's in this world look at a German shepherd and think vicious dog without knowing or considering the history of the dog and why it might bark. I wonder how the Karen's of this world would reacted if were tortured like my Rosie by another human and abused for two years and then dropped off at a busy shopping centre with total strangers, would they think all humans at the shopping centre mean her harm, would that be her perception? Just like humans there is a reason why dogs reacted the way they do. Abuse or poor obedience training seem to be the main reasons in my opinion.

Hey Pete great comment. You are doing an amazing job with Rosie, its not easy but your experience, patients and leadership is why she gets a second chance. I'd love to get my hands on the person who harmed her as I am sure you would too. Keep doing great things with Rosie, I enjoy you telling us about her.
