*I'm still kinda afraid of getting fancy goldfish because they always seem to get swim bladder issues and other health problems, so let me know if you think they're worth it and any advice that you think I should know!*

I've had a lot of swim bladder and other health issues with my Shubunkin. He's really hardy and has always bounced back, but it's always been a recurring issue. I love that fish but I don't think I'd have as much of a problem if I had another 100 gallons to play around with (he's in a 75 gallon with two dojo loaches). It's also impossible for me to keep any plants alive in their tank 🤣 the Shubunkin is so strong he'll just grab anything in his mouth and tear it up

@@MeowtroidPrime The only plant I've been able to successfully keep with goldfish were Java Ferns. Started with a small net, came out with dozens of sprouts within a couple months.

I have 18 fancies in 4 tanks. 2 of the fancies developed problems, probably down to poor genetics. Both can't flex their tails, plus one has swim bladder issues and mainly paddles around at the top. I put in lots of tall plants so he can still enjoy himself. The other one zooms around fine with her front fins, but the other one needs me to physically guide him down twice a day to get his sinking pellets (he manages fine on his own with lettuce). They share a low flow tank together and are best buds, and are doing fine despite their disabilities. They get very spoiled 😆

The other 16 fancies I have are fine. Statistically I think you're more likely to end up with a healthy one 🙂

I bought 50 feeder fish Comets to give to my rapidly growing Oscars. Since there were way too many to dump in with the Oscars, I decided to house the remaining forty in a 10 gallon tank. I set up a bubble wand and kept the water mid level to increase oxygen and to snare them easily. I noticed after the 3rd day that the remaining 10 were thriving , appeared to be healthy and I became fond of them. I always thought of them as throw away fish, but now I wanted to keep them as pets. They quickly grew and in just 3 months had gone from 2 inches to between 8-10 inches. I feed them thawed out frozen peas, goldfish pellets and even an occasional tiny feeder fish that they eagerly devour. I have two in the group that are 90% white with red eyes. 3 of them have huge tails and all are streamlined with great appetites. I now house them in a 75 gallon with white sand and a dark background with ornamental multicolored plants. My guests admire this great showpiece aquarium. Regular maintenance is needed to avoid bioload.

I love fancies, I always have. So when I got my mine, I didn't realise how much they'd actually stress me out and break my heart when I can't seem to heal one from the many health issues they get 🙃😔 personally I've decided to care for the ones I currently have and once they pass on but not replace them or buy more. Maybe one day again in the future I'll try again as I do love them, but as of right now, I don't want the heartbreak anymore 💔

I call mine the duckweed crew. I’ve had one get swim-bladder issues and it was not fun. They don’t recover. The biggest thing I can say about them is they are dirty fish. There’s an extra slime that comes with them. My canister filters get extra sludgy and I end up cleaning them once a week. I get the calico fan tail or the black moore and they seem pretty healthy. They love duckweed. And I think it’s good for them. Their colors pop if they get a steady diet. I love that they clean the gravel and keep it turned over. Right now they are all out in my patio pond (50g water trough). Maybe you could do a patio pond? ❤

I just convinced my husband to get me a 110 gallon stock tank for my birthday, so I can do a pond this spring/summer. I am definitely considering goldfish among other pond-y fish. Maybe you could do a small patio pond?

We have a straight up fancy and a black moor. They are great friends and are so adorable. One main thing I learned from Cory actually is that you need to med trio any you bring home, as they are very prone to parasites (I went through two Black Moors before I figured this out). Also, plants help tremendously with nitrates. I do anubias and java fern and it's working great. Lots of goldie keepers swear by pothos. And someone else mentioned over filtration. Yes. I have an AquaClear 110 on my 40 gallon and a giant sponge filter. And these too fish still muck then up more than any other tank filter I own!!

I learned this years ago about fancy/oddball (egg-shaped) goldfish based on my own experience. Just one required a 30g aquarium alone. Additional goldfish increased the aquarium requirement an additional 10g. I can only assume that the space requirements were in place because they cause ammonia levels to spike real high due to the waste they created.

I feel like goldfish are best suited to an outdoor pond. That’s what we’ve got for them at my house, kept in an in-ground pond with some koi. They seem to do pretty well, and, frankly, it’s less maintenance than a tank. Don’t really have to do water changes, and don’t even really have to feed them as they can find food by themselves. Even when it gets cold enough to freeze over, they make it through OK.

You can never had to much filtration with goldies. Fancys arnt really cold water as such. They thrive better in low 20/70f :)I actually keep a heater in my tank (I live in scotland) set at 20c.

Goldfish are great but they need larger tanks, pristine water, and good quality food with vegetation matter to reduce the bloat and swim bladder issues.

Great information. So much advice. But,Your baby fantail will grow. Much bigger tanks are always better. No matter where I get my fish I treat them with the trio. My fantails live a long time. Like over 11 yrs.Weekly water changes and you are set no problems. I rinse the filter media weekly too.Maybe sooner. Easy Peasy. You will be great with the double tail goldfish. I have kept them for longer than I want to say.

If you do get gold fish get a 40 gallon or ideally 55 and only get 2fancy if you have a 40g if gives them sufficient room to swim and grow

@PokemonAdventures0092 жыл бұрын
Haha they can get that big! It’s all about healthy water, food given and (in my experience, a big factor) genetics. I have had two sibling goldfish from a breeder, and one has stayed pretty small and the other just grew so rapidly!

Trim? What? Please explain??❤️🇦🇺
@gmoorach2 жыл бұрын
The bumpy stuff on the head of orandas is called the wen. Sometime it can over grow, causing buoyancy issues or cover the eyes. So, some goldfish keepers will trim the wen when needed. I've done it.

Keep it clean. 🧼 absolutely clean. 🧼 if it’s a smaller aquarium do 50% water change weekly and use distilled water 💦 or water you have left out in an open bucket for a few days. Keep it Algae free. . But a small air pump sponge filter in on corner besides the filter. And you can always get a uv steriliser filter. Don’t be lazy. Forget sand or small gravel. Vacuum out the bottom By siphon . No heater needed for common fish. But make sure they get natural light
@TupacShakur692 жыл бұрын
Fancies are definitely a bit of work. But as long as you feed then good quality pellet food(sinking and pre soak them as well) veggies, gel food and only in moderation they tend to do well. Swim bladder issues are unfortunately common, however choosing the right fish in person at the store is a big help as you can tell which fish already has issues. As long as you get healthy fish, and take measures to prevent buoyancy issues as much as possible they will live a ling life! Also many fancy goldfish breeders recommend higher temps to aid in digestion and gut health!
@GirlTalksFish2 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting, I hadn't heard about the higher temp tip! I'll definitely have to look into it some more.
