I have just found this video one year later. At 9:33 Sonya says, "None of us knows what the year ahead may hold...everyone of us will, at sometime this coming year, face an unexpected challenge." Oh, 2019-Sonya, if you only knew. These are great points and reminds me that family is important - not the schedule.

Wow! I've watched this episode before but today in the chaos of life it was like a fresh breath of air. Sonya, thank you for all your encouragement and practical wisdom. Honestly, I turn on your videos when I'm overwhelmed and need to readjust my perspective. Hold the plan loosely and nurture my children's hearts.

I've watched this several times and glean new encouragement every time. Thank you Sonya, your practical, down to earth suggestions are so helpful. I'm relieved and encouraged to know that it's okay to not keep up with the Jones' in our homeschool. It has helped my duologue with the Grandparents to let them know that we plan to cover a specific topic at a particular future time but we are studying X,Y,Z right now.

I like that " Teach the child, don't teach the curriculum" - that's possibly been my problem! Thank you! God bless you & yours!

Thank you for another video full of wise advice and brilliant ideas. You're such a blessing to inexperienced moms like me! I also want to say I especially love your "look" today--shirt, necklace, unpainted nails and that gorgeous hairstyle! You're a great example of modest and classy. 🙂👌

I have a new 9th grader and with transcripts breathing down my neck I feel like I HAVE to do certain subjects in a timely manner. I come from a "traditional" learning frame of mind and breaking away from textbooks makes me anxious BUT I love the CM method. I sincerely appreciate your work for the homeschooling community. Are there any videos that could help me in my situation?

We don't have any videos specifically on that, but our encouragement to you would be not to confuse what is taught with how it is taught. Yes, you have certain subjects that you need to cover, but you can teach those subjects with any method you prefer. If you prefer CM methods, use those.

how can we make this applicable for special needs children...pls help
@SimplyCharlotteMason

The same five principles apply especially to our special needs kids. (1) Start with the big picture. With our special kids, it's harder to have a target date for when a specific study will be done. But we can (and should) still have a plan of where we're headed and what we want to include in our studies during the next season. And a goal can be helpful too, to keep us focused in the best direction right now. (2) Include more than just books. This one is important especially for children who struggle with language. Including art and music and handicrafts and nature add wonderful variety, keep our lesson times fresh, and enrich our children's lives. (3) Each family is different. And each child is different. So design a schedule that works for your child and your situation. For example, how long each lesson lasts can heavily depend on your child's capabilities and needs. (4) Make the curriculum your servant. Tweak it as needed to fit your child, rather than trying to force your unique child to fit a general curriculum. (5) Adjust as you go along. Things change. Our children's needs change. What we thought might take two months ends up taking four. The key is to celebrate growth and take the next small step toward more growth.
