I happen to like gnome, once i wrapped my head around how it is intended to work. I hated Windows 11 and after Microsoft hack it got glitchy af. Noped right out after a month. That is the great thing about Linux, options. Just installed fedora and I must say it is so much better on my OEM laptop than any other distro I have tried. Ubuntu, POP, Manjaro, and Mint. My wifi card was giving me issues and had to tinker around on all of them to get it to work. updates seemed to break things and had to go back and fix. So far fedora is plug and play. no tinkering unless I want to. Great video and I appreciate you sharing. thank you and have a good one my fren

Terminal itself might not be complicated but knowing the commands to string together and how to correctly order them is. I personally use manjaro but even finding out how to navigate the file system has taken me years and i still have troubles at times finding out the structure without using ls every file. This isn’t even using commands. Example. Even -Syu and -Syyu for system updates and upgrades confuse me to this day and took me months to memorize.

The only thing about rpm that frosts people is dependency hell. You want to want to install a package? Good luck if required dependencies are either missing or broken. If developers just created a metapackage that would pull everything in, it would make life easier for everyone.

I have previously used a distribution that would install non-free software during the install process (I think it was Linux Mint). You had to check a box during the install process. The box was for you to confirm that you did not live in a country that wasn't allowed to use that software. There may have been other conditions, but it's been several years.

This is historical. Two of the influential leaders in the Linux early days, Red Hat and Debian, each invented a distribution/packaging scheme in and around 2001. Because Gnu/Linux is decentralized, each system continued to be improved. As new distros were created, they would choose to be based either on Red Hat or Debian, so we ended up with a small number of "camps" that you could count on one hand. Much like BSD vs System V in the commercial Unix world, or Gnome vs KDE in GUI land. Only the truly successful systems keep going, keeping the count small.

Gnome uses a lot of memory and wastes screen space, but judging by my experience, it causes the least problems amongst DE's, if you want things to just work like under Windows. For example, trackpad pinch-to-zoom, dragging a movie file from a SMB share into a media player, connecting through RDP, per-monitor scaling under Wayland, etc, All other DE's I have tried caused a lot more troubles with those things. Saving my time is, in most cases, more valuable than reducing memory usage. If some new Linux user asks me to recommend a DE for his desktop PC, I would say Gnome, without hesitation. Gnome extensions can solve most of major shortcomings of Gnome. I have not tried programming one myself, but Gnome extensions looked like a web browser extension, because it looked like JavaScript. Since I have some experience in creating browser extensions, maybe I could create someday create Gnome extensions, too, to fix the remaining annoying things.

Sure it is faster for you people who know a way around it, but I don't want learn it. I have work to do on my computer. And coming to linux from non-linux world, most people feel more secure with graphical interface. Not saying you should not show the terninal or you should show the gui, do whatever you want. I know you don't want to learn it, but you really should. @mekuranda2 жыл бұрын
Linux security advocates have stated that the terminal is not as safe for new to moderate users because of the copy paste methods, i.e blindly running commands you don't understand, and or the inadvertent typo that either does not work as desired or worse......these issues are far less likely in a GUI as the underlying code has been tested to work and the same code is executed each time ...exactly. I would like a dollar every time a Linux terminal guru types a command and it does not run or fails in some way because they ommitted a space or dot or forgot a switch!
