I used to HATE e collars and prongs I used to be one of those people who were uneducated and thought they were just abusive devices. After working with a balanced trainer, learning how to properly use the tools it opened up my dogs world! I find ecollars especially helpful for me when I want to take my dog on a trail while I'm riding horses. While I'm riding I really can't get to my dog easily, and on trails things always pop up other dogs, people, wildlife, etc. It gives me a peace of mind not having to worry about my dog at all while I'm riding and we all just have fun.

Exactly the same! I didn’t understand it so I was scared of it so I rallied against it. Then watching Tom’s videos made me realize it’s a tool not a torture device. Just like a hammer can build a house or smash his skull hitting on his hands it’s in

it's just a tool and you can use the vibrate or the loud tone rather than the zap...it's used for hunting dogs who are far away to recall...once that dog locks into something, he will chase, no matter how loud the handler yells recall...

@@sherrcon the “zap” is a misconception. It is actually a form of muscle stimulation. Just like treatment you would get at a chiropractor. There is no “shock” to it what so ever

@@claywills9993 have you tried putting it on your neck and have someone click the zap?...i bet you haven't...you can set the intensity of the collar from 1 to 99...try setting it to 99 and let us all know that it's just a muscle stimulation...lol...you are hilarious...better yet, zap yourself when it is raining outside or stand in a bucket/pool of water and then tell us it's just a muscle stimulation...lol...

I am a veterinarian and have a 7 month old female black field Lab that after watching your channel (and others), reading 10 books, decided to hire a trainer specifically to teach me how to properly use the E-collar. After 6 weeks of private lessons and my training consistently; I now have a 100% reliable recall and can take my Zenna ANYWHERE and know 100% that when I say “here” she will rocket to my side!!

@@cammcvittie9004 even if every time you called your dog in the past they came it doesn't mean that the next time they will come for sure. You can get it very reliable but there's always a possibility of something happening where your dog even ignores the ecollar stim. Yes, I'm being a little pedantic but people here are praising the ecollar like it's a gift sent from god instead of understanding why they tried to use positive reinforcement and it didn't work

I am blind and have a guide dog. Typically, guide dogs are not allowed off leash in areas that are not fenced, because those of us who are blind cannot see the environment and properly react to where our dogs are going or understand when it is time to recall them. The dogs catch on that we cannot see them and do not always recall reliably. However, after talking with my trainer who moved onto working with Dogs on E collar, I decided to get one and work with my girl! We have conditioned her for a few weeks and she is now to the point where we are just introducing her to new environments with the E collar. It is only used for off leash recall with us, and she is still dragging a long line, but responds completely to the E collar! It’s giving her so much freedom and she absolutely loves to run and play ball at the parks and in big fields! I will be taking her to the beach next week and on some hikes and I am so happy that she finally gets the freedom and downtime that any good working dog deserves! She wears a bell so I can hear where she is at and I know that she will recall to meet whenever I need her.

I’m a 60-year-old woman who rescued 90 pound Dogo Argentine. I struggled to give her the proper amount of running exercise and to control her during stressful walks in our neighborhood. I watched your videos for the E collar and bought one. After training with her the E collar has saved our lives. She is now able to run free on our hikes in the woods and is equally adjusted to neighborhood walks. The E collar gives us the added security we both need.

I have a sweet Dogo as well, adopted from a shelter and terrified of bicyclists and skateboarders. If I see the riders soon enough, I can sometimes get her attention and distract her with a "Watch" command. My old e-collar was clumsy, and I was moving, so I just bought a new--and smaller!--e-collar. This is a good intro video to share with others who may think e-collars are cruel.

I got an ecollar for my husky-GSD rescue after he decided that the woods behind my apartment were more interesting than whatever I might have for him. I now use it every day when we go out, and it has been great for both of us. We go out together hiking and I never have to worry about him getting into another hiker's business. Having the remote correction saved him from a questionable snake encounter about a month ago. Now when I pull it out he will push his 'sister' out of the way so he can get his on first. He doesn't get excited for the leash, he get's excited for the ecollar. For both he and his sister it has been a saving grace at the dog park. If there is ever a fight that seems like it might be starting to break out I can call them and if necessary apply a light stim or vibration and they come instantly without needing to be ready to run across the park. Now they are starting to default to me when a kerfuffle breaks out. It is one of the best investments that I have ever made.

@@Anna-io4zh To be perfectly transparent it is not animated excitement with jumping in as much as it is dramatic nihilism until I pull them out and then hyper focus and nagging to make sure I know that he is now entitled to go outside. Tom has some great videos, but the ones that I found first and really like are Shield k9's 4 pt. video series. I won't link all the videos as I don't want to be rude to Tom, but this is the link for the first one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foDZmYh4jJunlaM Biggest thing is to go slow with the training process, be clear and consistent, and don't give him bigger challenges than what he is ready for. Altogether it took about a month before I was comfortable going leash free on a hike. I didn't want to put him in a position where he was getting punished for not obeying a command he didn't fully understand yet.

I have a 2yr old female husky and even though we live in the country when I let her or if she gets off leash she is gone for hrs. And I am try in to catch her. I finally figured out the more I chase the more she runs. So now I either leave a door open and she comes in or I set in my yard with my back toward her pretending like I'm not paying any attention. She will then come up and lean against me. I feel like I'm a horrible human to keep such a beautiful intelligent dog captive. I love her so so much and I've had her since a day after she turned one and now she listen to me very well unless she's gotten loose in the house she does tricks and obeys me. I do not want to keep this dog locked up she is so remarkable. I guess I just want to know that I'm not making her life miserable.

I have an akita inu with very high prey drive and very stubborn. Because e collars are illegal in my country and considered abusive I didn't want to use one. But then I've seen more and more KZbin videos about them and I started to wonder if they are really that abusive. I did a lot of research, bought a book and finally got a dogtra arc 800. Because e collars (and many other tools) are banned where I live I couldn't go to a trainer. We started training when my dog was 1,5yo. I introduced her to the e collar for about 2 months, since then she is completely off leash. She ALWAYS listens to me, even if she sees wildlife or other dogs. And our relationship got SO MUCH BETTER! The e collar is still on her for emergencies but I didn't have to use it once since we finished the 2 month introduction and training phase. The e collar changed everything. We both are not frustrated anymore, we are the perfect team and we both enjoy daily hour long walks through the nature. The e collar changed everything to the best possible! Thanks Tom 😊

Hi, I am from Germany and I hope my English is so good that I understood everything right you said in the video. I really didn't know that the e-collar can be soft. Here so many people say that it hurts for the dog. But if I am right you can choose the level that it's soft for your dog and so I can get the attention. 🙈 Oh, I don't know enough English words to say what I mean. But thank you for your very good channel 👍

I got an E-collar after my lab ran away into someone’s backyard I was a little sacred at first but then I found ur videos and that’s what made me think food is not the only thing I have to rely on for training my dog. She’s a lab so food works yes, but not for long she lost interest in it. Walking became something I didn’t look forward too which is sad. So that’s why I got an E-collar it took weeks of training slowly for her and me to get used too. And now she has a recall which still impresses me to this day and can completely be off leash to have her fun. Now when she see the E-collar she aways thinks we’re going some where fun and that’s good😊. I really thank 🙏 u for posting theses videos it’s taught me so much.😁

@@meeshell2267 I can tell you that my Shepard mix took to it right away, and understood quickly what it meant - it was an invisible leash. I had a story similar to the above where my dog went after a buzzard that swooped down and taunted him. He ended up clearing a 5ft fence and was in someone's back yard before I could even think about catching up to him. I decided right then and there, I had to do something immediately. I did some research and came across Tom's videos on the 280C. I went on Amazon and had it the same day. After binging several hours of videos and tutorials, I felt confident to put it on and begin the process - after trying it on myself, of course... it is true, on the setting 6 or 7 I use for training, I couldn't even feel it! After just one 15 minute session, his on leash was so much better than the prong alone I had been using. After a few sessions on-leash, I took him off-leash, and couldn't believe the difference. On a few occasions I have had to use the boost button (which adds 10 to the setting, and I tried up to 20 on myself and it in no way hurts) when a squirrel or other dog got his focus. He immediately responded and turned on a dime and came right back to me. He is excited to put it on, because he knows we are going to have fun!

Thanks to your insights, I've successfully trained my border collie using an e-collar as a communication tool, not punishment. She gets visibly excited and happy every time I bring out the collar-she sniffs it, loves wearing it, and it seems to make her feel secure and safe. It's as if she knows that with it on, she won't lose track of me. Your videos have not only helped us but also challenged common misconceptions about using technology in training. Thank you for reaching audiences worldwide and help us having the same access to the information in order to contribute changing perspectives!

First of all, I want to thank Tom for educating people about the ecollar. I personally have used dogtra ecollars for about 12 years. I think they are fantastic for people willing to understand how they are to be used correctly. I began using an ecollar when my 2 year old female started having aggression issues. This started after I got a male puppy and one of my friends dogs attempted to bite him during a play date. The female grabbed him and prevented that from occurring. (The boy was about 4 months old at that time). Nothing was the same after that. She considered everything to be a threat. Soon the boy got to be 85 lbs and decided maybe she needed some back up 🙄. I tried everything I could get my hands on. Nothing worked. Reluctantly I bought the dogtra. I still did not want to use it. I read books and watched videos trying to be the most educated person I could be. (No Tom back then 😉). After 2 months, I began using it. Within 30 days I had a different dog. Once the girl was trained the boy was easier because he never started anything just was willing to help finish it. I have now used the ecollar with all of my new dogs and it is wonderful. Please be aware that training your dog takes work. I train all of my dogs EVERYTHING before 6 months. They know what it all means before they get their first ecollar at 6 months. This is just a reinforcer for everything they already know. This is not a slap a collar on them to “fix” a problem. So many people use it incorrectly then say it doesn’t work. The reason it worked for me for the aggressive issue was because of the lack of trust between me and my dogs. She didn’t trust me to be able to take care of the boy dog and I didn’t trust her not to try to bite everything she came in contact with. Once I started using the ecollar and she realized that I had control of the situation she started being less reactive. As she became less reactive, I began to relax. It was a give and take. While it was better in 30 days it was incredible after a few months. Things take time and consistency. Now I have 3 dogs (yep. I still have the female) and they are perfect on leash and off. The oldest girl no longer uses the ecollar (she is now 13 1/2) but I use it for my 2 and 4 year old. It’s great. I currently use the dogtra 1902s. It’s a 2 dog system and I will never go back to not using one!

@@rauldelgadillo8447 Even with the two year approach you should see progress regularly in some aspect of the training(leash manners, off leash, tricks, socialization, etc). If no progress is being seen clearly you need to change tactics, but generally speaking in all of his series I've watched there is progress. Is it a lot less progress than a balanced trainer could get in the same amount of time? Definitely.

I love everything you said on this video but especially want to highlight two things you said that dog owners HAVE TO ALWAYS CONSIDER: First, you said dogs are animals and have animals instincts and tendencies. That is so important to remind yourself and I have to constantly. We start to see our dogs as our kids, almost as humans to be honest. Until that moment "dog" takes over and they bolt after an animal or a person on a skateboard, etc. The second was towards the middle when you mention always having your dog wear the collar because of the things YOU cannot control, I.e. other people! I've had more near incidents in my years of dog ownership because of other people and other dogs than my dogs doing something to someone or something else. It's unfortunate but so many people (especially kids) are just awful and have no sense of what is going on around them and put me and my dogs in contentious situations. Great video!

The e collar is the reason i can walk my dog with less stress, off leash, with out the bunny's having to be scared. The e collar has made us trust each other so much more! His recall was realy good but never could win it from the bunny... he is also a big time swimmer. I found dogtra, and me and my dog found suc6, freedom, trust and new adventure's. Received my Dogtra TD 280C yesterday and am just getting started today. 1st day of training and So far so good! Only problem I am having is my dog is a pit with very thin hair and collar is slipping as she shakes her head. Which she does a lot-have taken her to vet to have her ears ck'd out to make sure no sign of infection and nothing there, it's more of a habit I think at this point. She has terrible recall and that is why I purchased the collar as I live on 4 acres without a fence so getting her to come is of the upmost importance for her safety!

I really enjoy you videos I am currently working towards getting a e collar, I am wanting to get the 280c. I have also used your videos to help me with teaching my first personal dog also she is my service dog. She was crazy before I was turned to your channel and noticed that how my parents taught me to train her was with no structure. My parents have 2 dogs that are 25 pounds that will walk away and 80% of the time they come when called but they just let them come back at there own pace and not straight away. I didn’t want that for my girl. Both there dogs are not as active as my dog (just turned 2, 65 pound, working line black field lab). My parents also use strictly positive training to where I am balanced. They don’t like that I use a prong and I showed them your video on prong collars. Even though they still don’t like that I do use tools to correct her, and tell me about it every time they can, they have backed off a bit on trying to tell me how to raise my dog. They are now starting to understand why I use tools and why I’m very structured with her and don’t talk to her excessively and give her so many boundaries. Including on my semi truck she has boundaries and stays on a 10 ft leash, while I’m driving, so that if I need to I can correct her.

I can’t actually feel the Dogtra until the 20’s. The e collar has not only helped my dog be able to be a dog. Run and play safely. We first trained our dog with the prong collar and had her conditioned to that first. But what was happening to me esp when we were first training her… the repeated correction with the prong was straining my chest. So now with the e collar I don’t have that happening anymore. I am so happy we were able to find a well educated balanced trainer in my area. It has really changed my pups quality of life. I have a Aussie and she needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation. We can let her run, play frisbee, and flirt pole (that’s her fav it’s like a big version of one of those cat toys). She can still be weary of strangers when she first meets them but once they give her a treat it does not even take a minute for her to lick their face! (Yes she a big kisser) Tom, thank you for educating all of us! Your videos continue to still help me even though my dog has completed all of her training. We still take her to a weekly class with our trainer which has about 10 other dogs there. It’s good socializing for her since we do not take her to dog parks.

My previous dog did not need an e-collar, only one of those wireless fence things and came when called, etc. He was a poodle mix. This next guy, phew.... high energy, beagle/boxer mix - awesome in most ways but definitely needed an e-collar - went through training sessions with a great local trainer and I never looked back. I use it when he is off leash on our 3 acre property and he loves it the freedom of occasionally of not having a leash but being near me. Also use it occasionally when company is over that he is not used to or he will be somewhat out of control/want to jump on them. When he has the e-collar on, he will keep 4 paws on the ground and he will not jump on them and there is no need to correct him at all - it's like magic, haha! After ten minutes or so, I take it off once he gets used to them. Easie/peasie.

I have a deaf 100lb pitbull with Addison's disease. Out of the many many hours I have practiced with the vibration setting we have only achieved a 20% recall. I believe it's a matter of him testing my boundaries with very little "I want to please the alpha". He'll stand dead still and stare at me with his head low eyes up waiting for me to respond. Testing whether I'll leave him be or start walking towards him to make a physical correction. The shock setting used at strength 1 of 100 scares the crap out of him and works well when unsafe aggression is the issue. But the sheer panic of being bit by an invisible snake is not conducive to anything but breaking the raging guard dog scenarios. And his rage is on a level I've yet to see matched. It scares everyone, but me.
