Hi Upstate Canine Academy. I have a 20 month old Staffy x bully mix. We adopted him from SPCA 4 Months ago. He is eager to please and has picked up new commands well. He does however have a strong play and prey drive which affects his recall. Is low level stimulation going to be sufficient once he has already engaged in play or prey. We will normally try to recall before he starts to engage. We have used long line and high value treats. This has improved recall a lot but he is certainly not reliable. If off leash he will run from dog to dog, or person to person until he finds the interaction he wants, normally he loves to get dogs to chase him. If we look for a local trainer to help with an e collar, what qualities and methods should we be looking at from them to know that they are interested in the dogs best interests. I have spoken to one trainer and the e collar was her go to for everything from, interest in cats, to digging in the garden. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tom, I have learned so much about dog behavior, tool usage and love your videos! As a subscriber and a nurse who wears a mask all day everyday, I have a viewer tip to help you. I have noticed you constantly have to pull up your 'no bad dog' face mask to cover your nose. Try changing the tension around your ear - pull down on the mask from behind your ears to tighten the tension around your nose and it will stay up longer. Hope this helps just a smidgen as much as you have helped all your viewers.

The e-collar has legitimately saved my dog's life! We were out playing and whenever he went to retrieve his ball he got interested in some cars in the parking lot, after giving him stimulation and telling him to come he recalled to me instead of going into the busy parking lot. All of his remote training was done in accordance with the videos that Tom has posted using a dogtra ARC

I’m from the UK and I have an XL bull puppy and he’s 8 months old. He’s incredibly smart and knows when the leash is off, so he takes his time to come back and if he sees something he really “likes” he will not hear a single word, not see anything else and do exactly what it is that he “likes”. He’s never bitten anyone and is not aggressive to dogs, people or anything, he’s had kids slap him on the eyes and tug on him, he’s had dogs nip at his face because they’re scared or bark at him and he couldn’t care less, so his temperament is lovely. He just loves everyone, so I don’t want him running up to someone to say hello, they get spooked and hit him and he bites them back (even if he does it lightly, because of the bad press in the Uk, he will get put down immediately). Thank you so much for this video, I put off getting the e collar for so long because there’s so many trainers out there making videos about it just to say “buy my online course for the little price of £1000 to find out how to use the e collar”. Great to see a trainer that just cares about spreading the message to whoever needs it.
@joeschmoe26974 ай бұрын
Exactly! What people don’t realize is it’s impossible to correct a dog when it’s off leash without an e-collar and it’s ESPECIALLY futile to do positive only training. If your dog sees something it “likes” more than the treat you’re holding, he suddenly becomes deaf and is gone!😂

Seems like Tom is teaching them to all speak the same language so, it is not just assumed communication was understood when it really was not (can get mixed signals which confuses both the dog and the human, but for different reasons, but neither understands....). Both verbal and non verbal are at play.... Once the basics are there, it seems like they can then can work on more "words in the dictionary" so to speak? Tom has an intuitive instinct in figuring out what happened and why. He also seems to know what/how to fix both owners and their dogs, and get them in synch. It is great when people are willing to ask for help, knowing it will benefit everyone. Lovely Golden! So happy go lucky ❤

Thanks to your advice on other ecollar episodes I have a 1 year old chi mix that has better recall than my other 7 dogs that are 3-16 years old. Radar can be on the back 2.5 acres, I can't see him or find him, say Radar here, and that lil dude beats a path to me, without the ecollar now. Never have to even put it on him anymore. Now I'm using it for my GSD tripod and she's doing much better than before. Let me tell you she knows how to play the handicap card and stop and rest...if she can turn a d head back out she's not THAT tired lol. Then it's that oh I'm thirsty and to the bucket she goes...nope lil girl there's water in the house, vibrate and here she comes again. LOVE your training Tom, you are AWESOME!! My vet says I have the best behaved bi lingual dogs he sees ❤️. (My sheps are trained in German). I sent your YT channel to him via text and he's recommending you to other clients with dogs 🤩

I've been using Dogtra collars with working dogs for about 15 years - love that brand (tried others and didn't care for them). I realize that people use e-collars (and train in general) in different ways, but in my case I prefer to use the buzzer (vibrate) feature for recall training and reserve the "nick" and the "bite" for corrections. The buzz is great for recall situations where you may not want to shout, or your dog may not be able to hear you (in the water, loud environment, etc). With the buzzer reserved for recall, I can save the "nick" for situations where I need to break the dog's fixation or correct minor behavior glitches. Also, as I think you mentioned, make sure that you use the collar for FUN things - walks, training, playing, hiking, etc - and not for punishment. My current dog LOVES the e-collar - he gets very excited when I pick it up. My last dog, however, would give me serious stink-eye when I put it on him (he was a rescue that had apparently been punished with the e-collar).

Your off leash dog philosophy and training is exactly what I've been looking for! My Sadie is pretty well trained, with a pretty good recall, but her prey drive is strong, so I bought an e-collar to protect her from wildlife. Your training is practical and makes sense for us. Well done and thank you!! Now I'm less afraid to get going with the e-collar to protect her while she lives her best doggy life!

What you are doing is illegal, since ecollars are forbidden in Austria, by law. First offence will be several hundred €uros. Repeated misdoing can even get you in jail and your dog taken from you. Inform yourself at the vet. Same goes for Germany (since you have a German Shepherd) and most of Europe. Just to let you know, what you are dealing with.. Btw: In Austria, anybody may call himself "dog trainer". Try to find a licenced dog trainer, who studied and payed for his/her own education.

My dogs get excited with joy when they see me get the ecollar off the shelf and put it on them. They know it is going to be fun, exciting and a lot of freedom to do things they enjoy. It is the best kind of training for safely letting the dog of leash. Just my opinion mind you.

The only correct way to use the E collar! I waas so confused of how its used and when, (tho i dont own a dog) but this video made it really easy! It's like training horses- pressure and release, no one learns from punishment. great video man!
@dogsareboss4 жыл бұрын
You will eventually have to correct/punish the dog for noncompliance. When the dog definitely knows what 'come' or 'here' means, but chooses to ignore you, then you absolutely have to punish the dog to let them know it's not optional. There has to be a consequence for not listening or what's the point of training a command such as recall in the first place? That's the great thing about E-collar training - you can use low levels to teach desired behaviours and higher levels to stop bad/unwanted behaviours and correct noncompliance of known commands. X

Tom is a fantastic trainer, balance not only in methods proven but also in his approach to each dog and each owner. His ability to reach for the reasons and expectations to guide results is what positions him as a leader in the training industry. Like Larry Krohn, Michael Ellis and others of similar bent, Tom contributes immensely to understanding how and why to train, how to get results without steeping on your own feet and how to engage your dog. Listening to a podcast with his staff, it was like sitting in on the most fun workshop ever! Great team, love the reciprocation and respect each had for each other while having a blast. Truly, unusually in this hyper competitive field.

You have such great videos. Thank you for sharing them with the world. Do you ever train with deaf dogs? We rescued a white boxer mix puppy who was 13 weeks old last year. We didn’t know she was deaf at the time but once we found out we hired an amazing dog trainer who trains like you. She is so well trained but there is a lack of great trainers online who give advice with deaf dogs. I would really love if you could show how to do all these training techniques with a deaf dog. Maybe people will be more willing to adopt them if they feel they can train them. Many people told me they would have returned her if they found out she was deaf. That makes me so sad because she is amazing, loving and the best dog ever.

From a distance, it appears that the puppy is resource-guarding your mom. It views your mom as a resource. You have options. One is to study Thomas’s online videos or the other is to sign up on his America’s Canine Educator website for an online training session. An online session costs money, but may provide quicker results. P.S. Your puppy needs structure and leadership.

We are off to a great start with positive reinforcement obedience training and ready to take it to the next level with the e-collar. Technology for the win!

Would it be a good idea to use the e-collar to prevent reactivity? My trainer suggested it last week. I'm just wondering if there is something I can do to cut the reactivity before going to e-collar? My dog pit/lab mix snaps at even the calmest relaxed dogs ever

Hey, Janina, you absolutely can use the E-collar to stop dog reactivity! Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or does not know what they're talking about (no offense to the other people who responded to this question). It depends on a few things - is your dog leash-reactive towards other dogs, or is your dog actually aggressive? Real dog aggression should be tackled by an experienced professional. However, a bit of general nonsense is totally fixable with an E-collar. There is a very specific way to do it, though. Also, what kind of E-collar do you have? X

@@dogsareboss pretty sure it's just leash reactivity. I take him to the dog park and keep him solo on the timid dog side. He's fine with sniffs through the fence. I haven't worked up to letting him lose with other dogs. Still haven't started e-collar. We're going to professional training and working through a couple obedience issues first.

Thank you for making this video 👍 When do you start to phase out the e-collar? Once your dog has established reliable recall, is it still a good idea to occasionally use the e-collar?

Good question

How to I correct my dog other than using the collar? As soon as I correct her with it (or a harness), she immediately crouches down and is scared to continue working. She won’t heel nicely afterwards and just be scared. It can be the ever so lighted tug on the collar or harness, she gets really scared. I also can’t use an e-collar cause it also scares her. I have one that beeps and/or vibrates and I really can’t use it on her. Otherwise, she’s not very fearful, sometimes but it’s okay. I’d be grateful for every tip!!

How do you know that they are responding to the sensation instead of just following the command.?
@stitch109254 жыл бұрын
I assume you need to switch it up. Give different commands like "come", "sit", "down" or whatever at random so the dog learns that listening to the correct command makes the collar stop, and does not associate it with a specific command. There are collars with a sound function, like a beep, this can be used to make your dogs sit and stay from a distance. Handy when you're walking and a biker needs to pass, to keep your dog out of the way.

What type of stimulating is it vibrate? Low level shock?

Does the brand e collar your recommending, have a multi-dog setting for your training method? ..... particularly for 7 dog? 😊

Unclear as to which button is used and for what period of time. Do you use the continuous button when you call the dog and keep it pressed until the dog returns to you?

When is the correction applied...at the time of the call or when there s a refusal?
