To Be Clear: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy dog according to The Kennel Club. Cavalier King Charles spaniels, while a relatively new breed recreated less than a century ago, were based on the toy spaniel dogs that had been bred for nobility and royalty for centuries. This dog breed was bred to be a companion, but still retains many of the energetic traits of their spaniel ancestors. As a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owner, they’re some things you must avoid doing when it comes to your dog and in this video, we bring to you 5 things you must never do to your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

I just had to put my 14 year old Cavelier King Charles to sleep last week. He had a heart condition, fluid in his lungs and severe arthritis but he still managed to celebrate his 14th birthday with a smile on his face! I’m gonna miss him for the rest of my life! He was a lot of work health wise, especially by the end but he was completely worth it coz he was the most loving dog ever! ❤️

I am so sorry for your loss. It's always so very sad to loose a member of the family, that's always been there for you. 14 is a very good age for a Cavalier. I always feel so honored and grateful, that I was their cavalier Mom. I still think back affectionately, even now 30+ on of the passing of some of my dog's, I also still miss them, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Don't let it stop you getting a new member of your family at some point. I feel for you very much. It's always a very sad time.

As an owner of cavalier king Charles spaniels, for over 30 years, I can honestly say, never get just one cavalier on its own, especially if you have to be out a fair bit of a time, always get at least 2 so that they are company for each other while your out.

I have 5 Cavaliers that own me. I would also add that Cavaliers are one of the best breeds at training their owners to do exactly what they want. Learn to be firm or your gorgeous Cavalier will have you wrapped around their pawsnin no time at all. I would also add that one of the best diets foe the Cavalier is a Raw Diet. DONE CORRRCTLY my 5 cavvies & a large crossbreed have thrived on the diet and it doesn't have to cost loads.

Separation anxiety. Yep. We bought a brother/sister paid (she was the runt of the litter as well). So they always had each other and they disliked being separated. As they got older Bella started showing symptoms of Syringomyelia. We were providing supportive care as best as possible. But unexpectedly when she went into the vets for a teeth cleaning, she passed (like related to another major genetic issue Mitral Valve Disease). Bentley suffered. He showed all the symptoms of major loss, not eating, not wanting to do anything, to the point we worried he might have something wrong as well. But he started coming back. And then we got two more, two sisters from another litter of another breeder. Now all three love sleeping together and playing. This breed certainly needs people or other dogs in it's life at all times. It's not a loner type dog.

A cavalier is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever come across. My husband and I adored our Gillian. She was his literal shadow. Please do pay attention to the health risks involved in this breed - a very high percentage develop heart disease. We kept Gillie on expensive prescription dog food to prevent her pancreatitis attacks and keep her weight down. We supplemented her diet with fresh vegetables. We limited treats. She was walked four times a day. Despite all of our preventative measures, she developed mitral valve disease and we lost her at 11 yrs. 4 mos. old.

We have had our Cavalier for almost 3 years. We got him at 12 weeks old. He is so loving and sweet. He seems to take to anyone and also seems to prefer people over other dogs, although he does get along great with all the dogs in the neighborhood. He eats well, loves treats, and is a perfect pet. He is quite smart and let's us know when it's time for his daily golf cart ride which he loves. He travels beautifully in the car and really enjoys going for rides. We were able to completely potty train him in two weeks. He is a super addition to our family.

My blenheim Cavalier girl just turned 3 years old last month. Her name is Jersey. The later half of last year was tough in dealing with some health issues that arose - doggy MRSA, multiple urinary infections that my vet couldn't quite wipe out, antibiotics, pain meds, diapers, etc.... then, finally she passed a bladder stone (even though x-rays and multiple ultrasounds showed no stones). We have her on a special prescription diet now and so far, so good, although she is super picky about eating her dry food. We mix it with a little of the wet prescription food to entice her and it seems to be working. We hope we have her on the path to staying healthy. She is an EXTRA sensitive dog, but also very intelligent. She actually tries to communicate with me, letting me know she wants to get up on the couch, if she wants her blanket, among other things, and oh yes, she asks for treats all the time! We lost our senior cocker spaniel, Daisy, in the late of summer, and Jersey did NOT do well on her own. We quickly had to bring another dog into the house in order to leave for but a few minutes! Needless to say, she's my baby and I couldn't imagine her any other way!

We currently have our 8th Cavalier. We normally adopt only senior/special needs Cavs, and random breeds as well. Our current Cav is a "sort of" rescue since he was born and bred for the show ring, but was temperamentally unsuited for that. So he had to be rehomed, and I luckily got him. He is on meds for anxiety, but at 6 years old, he is otherwise healthy. We are retired, so our dogs are never left alone for long, and they don't have separation anxiety. We have had Cavs with Mitral Valve Disease (which most of our Cavs died from), Syringomyela, blindness, deafness, diabetes, skin disease, dental disease, etc. If you want to own Cavaliers, you need to decide that specialized (expensive) vet care is your priority. If you think they are expensive to buy, just wait until you get into the vet care. They are worth it for all the love and joy that they bring.

Our Cav is about to turn six. She gets adoring "ahs" whenever we take her shopping in stores that allow dogs. She's a wonderful companion whether we're at home or on trips. One negative is she is difficult to walk on the leash as she stops to sniff every few steps.
@lynnfitzpatrick1932

Sniffing should be allowed for all dogs. It is an essential part of their lives and gives them understanding of the environment. It is mentally stimulating. My Cavaliers are Scent Detection dogs and we trial for fun. They are love finding the hides I place for them. Scientists are discovering that sniffing helps dogs with fear issues. If you are walking for exercise, go by yourself. When you come home, take your dog out for a 20 minute sniff fest. Be sure to go to different places

Cavaliers were always my dream dog breed, and I'm finally able to get one, but the only thing that is stopping me from byuing one and deciding to choose a different dog is their health, and that compared to other breeds, the tendency to get sick and have other problems in way higher than in an average dog... it's really hard to decide Edit: Thank you so much everyone who replied with all of the tips and reassuring! I have a Cavalier. He's the most loving dog I've ever met. He's also the one that needs the vet the most often, and the bills do add up. I absolutely adore him but I am never getting another one as I do not wish to encourage breeding a type of dog that has such poor health. It's just planned suffering. (Mine was first my grandma's then my mother's, and I got him after they both passed away.) Please make sure you can afford lots of trips to the vet if you do decide to get a cav. They're such good dogs, they deserve at least that.

My wife and I received a Cavalier Spaniel from a neighbor. Her sister was moving to an apartment and could not have a dog. We had always had English Setters so this was a big change. “Pumpkin” is a rescue from a puppy mill and has no social experience with other dogs. However, in the year+ that we have had her she is starting to open up. We have had some health problems with her and did research to find out what the breed was susceptible to. Thank you for your five hints of what not to do. We do leave her but not for more than a few hours. We are both retired and now in our seventies so little Pumpkin is the perfect pet. Our vet has also fallen for her and keeps an eye out for her breed related issues. She has currently had a relapse with Valley Fever but we are confident she will be okay as it was caught very early while testing her for other illnesses. So your hint about close vet attention is one of our first concerns. Pumpkin is a dream come true! Thanks again, Bill & Judy in Tucson, AZ.

As a Cavalier mommy of 2, this is spot on! So many people get them thinking they will be ok alone, but they are not the type to be alone! My girls are best friends, where there is one, the other is literally right by her side. They are 6 months apart in age, so I was a full time stay at home dog mommy for for 6 months after bringing my oldest home and for another 6 months to train the youngest home and train her. My husband and I work shifts that overlap by only 3 hours and my teenagers are home with them during that time. You can notice a tremendous difference in behavior and depression if they are left alone for any period of time. They go everywhere with us. I was hoping you could do a video on the best diet for them, considering there are so many mixed reviews. They are currently on farmers dog homemade and doing well, but I am wondering if there are any premade options that I could switch them to because making it at home is rather time consuming.

Very true....I waited until I retired to get one. Maddie is 4 years old now. They are somewhat delicate dogs (small boned) and no rough-housing is advised especially with kids. I pamper and baby my Cavie. I try to brush her teeth every other day. I feed her only 1 cup per day split into morning and night. I brush her daily as they shed. A lot. She gets 1 treat per day. I buy Full Moon Pet products and Fera Pet products. They have great supplements like Cardiac Support and Probiotics that I sprinkle on her food (powder) also Fish Oil which is a great product as well. 1 pump in her food is good. She gets no people food except occasional green beans (they love) and sweet potatoes. No people ice cream is a big no-no. Grocery stores carry doggie ice cream so she gets that once in a while. They have very sensitive tummies. Ground meat should always be boiled. The grease would upset her tummy and she'd get diarrhea. Mix it with rice as a special treat. They love it. No sausage or bacon should ever be given to ANY dogs as they can develop and die from pancreatitis. And always groom your cavie. I like her fluffy but not too shaggy. I bathe her regularly once/month and she loves ❤️ getting a bath. She is my heart and soul and I waited 20 years to get her. I became familiar with this breed back in the late 90s and fell in love. I did tons of research over the years and kept pictures in my bathroom and bedroom of different Cavaliers reminding me that some day, I would get one. When i was ready to purchase, I did soo much research on reputable breeders and I found one in North Carolina. She met me half way and I finally got her on April 7th, 2018. Ironically she was born on February 3rd, the same date my sister passed away in 2016. My sister always knew i wanted this dog and she prayed that some day I would get her. It's too bad she never got to meet her. Maddie had 3 brothers, and she was the only female. She's very spunky and sassy and barks a lot but that's her personality and I wouldn't have it any other way. If anyone is thinking about getting a Cavie, please spend lots of time with them. If you have a job where you'd be working 8-10-12 hours/day, this breed isn't for you. 👏✌️🎉👐👍🤩🥰🥳🐶🐕

Our first Cavalier was not well bred and died way too early. So, I did lots of research and found our Black and Tan Cavalier from a lady that showed all her dogs and has won many awards. It was the the travel to purchase him. His name is Churchill and he is so affectionate, healthy (my Vet said he was well bred the first time he laid hands on him), funny, sweet and loves to play. We are overjoyed with him. But, he does not like cats and we do, so that has been a bit of an issue. He ignores them and if you are a cat owner, you get that cats do not like that. Cats are the opposite of Churchill. But, we would never have another dog breed but a CKCS.

OK, right off the bat. I trained my cavie for separation anxiety at 8 weeks, and it was never an issue. I left him while I was at work, and he was perfectly fine. My neighbors never heard him, and I live in an apartment building. Never chewed, never had accidents. He's now over 10 years old. I'm now retired, and get to enjoy him 24/7 ❤❤❤

Bought our Caveliers new coats. Nice and cosy. Ok for the little girl but poor Smartie it covered up his little tidger and when he’s cocked his leg the wee came out under his chin and then was waterlogged and he kept getting his back leg caught up in it where the underneath bit was hanging down.

We have two precious tri color girls (unrelated), age 3. I worked from home and now am retired, so separation anxiety is very real for them. They love cuddling and will do so for hours if permitted. However, our afternoon walks are something they always get excited for and seem to know when it is time. They also travel extremely well, coming along on our 2-3 week camping trips without any problems. If you are looking for a low key, relaxed, warm, furry friend that requires a lot of love, this is your breed.

My Phoebie is a 9 year old tricolor Cav. Of all the dogs who have been my companions over the years, she is the sweetest, most gentle girl ever. Great with other dogs, a wonderful therapy visitor for over 8 years and a very sensitive little beauty! She is prone to ear infections, and I must monitor her ears very carefully. Also now has a grade 2 heart murmur that we carefully monitor. Best little girl EVER!!

I also had a tricolour called Phoebe. You have just described her! Except she was prone to skin irritations rather than ear infections. She was a twin. I was heartbroken to lose her brother in May. Heart, lungs, kidneys. All at once . Then the following month Phoebe passed with the same symptoms. Up to the last month they had very happy, joyous lives. My faithful companions. My babies. Also diagnosed with heart murmurs at an early age. They were nine. Last month I lost my elder at the age of 14. Just old age. Our hearts and house are empty. This week my husband came home with a Blenheim and a tricolour. 14 weeks old. A home is not a home without a CKC spaniel. 🐶🐶

I'm so very sorry for your loss of your beloved Cav. Heart disease is indeed far too prevalent, mainly due to the large numbers of unscrupulous and puppymill breeders. Your little on was fortunate fo have been able to live a life of love in your care.

I love my ruby Cavvie with all my heart. He's so sweet-natured, affectionate and happy, but he's sure full of bounce and was squirming and leaping at 7 weeks - now almost 7 years and still full of beans. I always thought Cavaliers were docile, but mine sure isn't. He's pretty hyperactive, specially round other people. Does anyone else have a hyperactive Cavalier?

I had a Cavalier for almost 8 years. She was the sweetest most loving dog ever. We had to put her to sleep about 6 months ago due to heart failure. It absolutely broke my heart. She was struggling to breathe because of all the fluid on her lungs. She was taking medication but it wasn't helping. The only downside to a Cavalier is the shedding. Otherwise, they are the best dogs in all other ways.

Scarlett is our Ruby Cavalier and just celebrated her 2nd birthday. You are spot on in your advice! The only issue we have with her is barking when she sees someone because she’s trying to get their attention so they come and pet her. Any suggestions? We’ve tried treats when she doesn’t, a noise/vibrate only bark collar and while both help, she still goes ballistic on walks.

Here’s something that might work. When your dog bark, reward it. I would associate a reward marker with giving the treat, either using a clicker or a short word like yes. The idea there is when your dog hears that word, it means they did something right and are about to get a reward. When they associate a bark with a treat, you start associating a cue, like “speak” with the act. You want to be able to say “speak”, have them bark, then use your reward marker followed by a treat. When they have an association with “speak” or whatever your cue is, and they bark without the request, ignore them. They’re smart animals, they can make the association that barking in that situation doesn’t get them anything and you don’t like it. A professional trainer can also help if she still doesn’t let go of that behavior.

Many years ago our family had a lovely cavalier called Laddie the only thing he couldn’t grasp was going for walks. He’s get d St I excited when we went to grab the lead, as soon as it was attached the mad dash began. Laddie would just pull on the lead as hard as he could as he dashed from one tree or pole to the next to leave his mark.

If you have this issue, find a Positive Reinforcement based trainer and ask for a lesson or 2 in Loose Leash Walking. Also use a harness instead of a collar. Pulling can do damage to the neck.

Wow, one if each colour, that's lovely. I always wanted a Ruby, but never had one in my 30 years of owning them, had all the other colours though. Sadly am in I'll health now, so shall never get my Ruby, as it would be unfair to the dog, as I couldn't lie look after it properly. That's what comes with old age 😔

I bought two Cavalier pups, a black and tan and a red, Buddy and Jack, and gave Buddy to my grandkids who live nearby, so the dogs get to play together often. Best money I've ever spent. Since I'm retired, isolation is not generally a problem and I will often take Jack with me in my pickup to The Home Depot and other dog-friendly places. For long drives he will rest his muzzle on my thigh and the miles will glide by. If he's awake he will sit in my lap and put his head out the window to sniff and feel the breeze flowing through his floppy ears. If I need to leave for longer periods of time, Jack stays with my children and grandchildren who live next door. They have a large friendly dog and the kids walk them every evening; so Jack just blends right in and soaks up the love from several sources. Both dogs were neutered at about one year since they are males and the vet warned us that they tend to become fat. Buddy has remained trim, but I've spoiled Jack who has ballooned out to forty pounds, but we are working on slimming down, which has become hard for Jack who does not like the new discipline and who is not only an accomplished beggar he will occasionally squat and stubbornly resist walking any further, which I need to do for exercise. As a pup he chewed up my best dress shows (only the best for a Cavie!). But the real benefit is emotional. As widower who lives alone, Jack has been a great companion and surrogate friend. He has also been a great wingman and his beauty and charm have caused many walkers, especially children, to stop and pet and say hi and ask if they can pet my dog, which Jack just loves. Just showing off, he has learned to pick up his leash and carry it in his muzzle, which always elicits a chuckle. Wonderful dog and worth the money and the trouble if you have the time for them.

Charlie is a new addition to a cat family of 2, he is about to be 3 months old. He is playful with the cats (1 cat, 1 kitten) and they get along great. He’s friendly and so loving. Took him to get his first check up at the vet and they heard a heart murmur and is now on the waiting list for a cardiologist to check further.. anyone have the same situation with a pup that young?
@lynnfitzpatrick1932
@lynnfitzpatrick1932 Жыл бұрын
This is very young for MVD. You have some options. A responsible breeder will help you with this. Let them know and discuss it with them. All my puppies came with a limited guarantee usually for the first year of life. This usually means you have the option of returning the dog in exchange for a healthy puppy. If you wish to keep him, he will need to be checked by a vet every 6 months. Eventually, depending on how it progresses, he will need a heart medication. It is not expensive and will extend his life. He will still be happy and active. One of my Cavaliers has a murmur. It started at 4.5 years. She is not on meds and is active. We participate in Rally O, Agility and Scent Detection which the cardiologist approved. She is a fabulous dog and we love her to bits. We intend to follow up with her cardiologist every 6 months. My older Cavaliers all developed MVD around 11-12 yo. and lived to be 14/15 yo. ...a normal life expectancy. I'm sure your vet will answer all of your questions.

Hi, we have had a cavalier King Charles spaniel for 5 years and want to get her a little brother (another pup, same breed) but the cab we currently have can get very jealous … she would never hurt the pup but I have just thought because she has had our attention all to her self for 5 years I don’t think she would be okay with the attention shared. What do you think?
