We have had three, wonderful Cavaliers over the years. Two of them lost their hearing around age 7. They were so good at visual cues that it didn't impact their ability to understand us, but I wanted folks to know about this potential issue, as well. Also, something that is very important. Cavaliers cannot run free, even in rural areas. They are completely unafraid of moving vehicles. To avoid tragedy, they must always be tethered, leashed or in a fenced in yard.

I've had a cavalier for 3mths. She's changed my life completely, l was stuck in grief from my husband's death. Once Aubrey came into my life I don't have time to get depressed, how l feel affects her she understands me not like any other dog & l understand her. But she's a con ,she's a theif if l can't find something & she's hiding in her little crate, she has this look like l didn't steal your peanut butter bar. There's the wrapper right there, when she sees an orange wrapper she'll steal it thinking she has peanut butter. She brought me back to life, l don't think I could get another one because she's very jealous & possessive. High maintenance but worth it.

Yesss! This is such a great video! The second con you pointed out is very important. I really recommend asking your breeder if the parents are tested for genetic diseases. Daisy has been tested for those as well, she’s clear for: MVD (mitral valve disease), EF (episodic falling), CCDE (curly coat dry eye), eyes & heart clear. Doing those tests, we discovered that she has the gene for DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) but she’s not showing signs of developing it. So thankful for having a healthy pup, but once again, this is VERY IMPORTANT!! Please do your research before getting a cavalier 👏

This is good. My older parents just adopted a Cavalier puppy. They weren’t expecting the level of separation anxiety. She was ofc getting right up under their feet and they started having trouble with falling. Luckily, they realized quickly that they weren’t going to be able to handle a puppy like that. I was able to talk them into letting me have her and I’ll bring her over for visits often. I’m use to having needy breeds so at my house her needs can be met. Plus here she has furry siblings she can play with and snuggle with. She’s much happier here.

My cavalier recently had to be put down because of severe mitral valve disease. It is so unfair, he was the greatest dog ever. Very patient, kind, never snapped at us and always wanted cuddles. Very good points about Cavaliers. It took me a while to find one in Scotland where I could see the mother and father when I went to look at them. Both the mum and father were in good health and registered with the kennel club. I started grooming her myself (saves a lot of money) very early and have kept her short as she is very active and gets walked in nearby forests and fields, also swims when the weather is decent. She picked up so much dirt, twigs, slugs etc when her hair was longer and often got tangled up where she couldn't move lol same thing when it snowed... the snow built up around her feet, ankles and underneath and turned her into a snowball basically :) A good brush I use every day on her is called a furminator and gets out a lot of excess fur that normal brushes don't get, helps with the shedding.

My Cav, Winston, is six and he has not had any heart or eye issues. He was diagnosed with spondylosis (bone spurs growing along the spine) at age two, and he has been taking medication for nerve pain prevention since then. I was heartbroken because he was still a baby at two. He has flare ups every so often and requires an increased dose and a heating pad to manage the pain. However, he is VERY high maintenance as I’m sure all cavaliers are. Due to his allergies, I buy $60 dog food for him. Any pet is a commitment, but cavaliers are an absolute commitment with the extra care that is needed to maintain their health.

Every single point you bring up is so true - especially the second one. I've had 5 family cavaliers (and just brought home a new boy belonging to my husband and I). Our very first cav was a long time ago when I was a kid. It was such an impulsive buy when on holidays after seeing an ad in the newspaper, and we had no idea about the breed or ethical breeders etc. The puppy we bought was from a lady whose bitch had accidentally gotten to the neighbour cav. While our girl was absolutely beautiful, loving and smart, she developed SM very severely and only made it to 6 years old. Since then, we've really learned to do our research, so they are definitely not a breed to go into without thorough research. Additionally, and I think this goes for just about any small breed, another con is the fear of something happening with a large, aggressive dog while out on a walk. Cavaliers are sweet, friendly and defenseless. They don't stand a chance if a large and aggressive dog comes for them. I will always walk them with that small fear in the back of my mind - which leads me to caution when it comes to dog parks or places populated with lots of dogs.

People who breed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and English Bulldogs are egoistic pieces of shit. Cavaliers are prone to several significant issues including heart disease. They also suffer from luxating patellas, allergies, hip dysplasia, cataracts and syringomyelia. Oh and they also have a skull that is too small for the brain, which causes headache....Stop the breeding of these types of dogs!! It's unethical! Also stop breeding dogs who can barely breathe! These include: Bulldogs (French and English), Boxer Dogs, Boston Terriers, Pekingese, Chinese Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Bull Mastiffs!

Great video! A few other cons that some Cavalier owners might experience are: excessive barking at times, especially at strangers outside, they like to tease for food and have been known to steal it when you’re not looking, they can be hard chewers and pretty much chew even hard toys up very quickly, some Cavs are not good off leash as they like to explore, some are little escape artists and will ignore your calls. Other than those few quirks, these little pups are absolute angels. 💖
@myevilov3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure the barking you are experiencing is a breed characteristic. Our 2 cavs almost never ever bark. When someone is at the door maybe just a couple yips. Others remark how quiet they are. And polite! When out to restaurants they patiently relax at the table. I researched this prior to choosing cavs b/c not a fan of happier small dogs.

Cavs are one of the quietest dog breeds in the world. Barking excessively would be the result of an issue to do with health or lack of training, but it is definitely not a Cavalier characteristic at all. You may need to take yours to the vet or seek help from a trainer ☺️

Although I've never owned King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, I've had three Cocker Spaniels and adored them.The only downside I found, was they can have tremendous problems with their ears. I paid my vet a fortune for 13 years in desperately trying to fix George up. Sadly, it didn't work, but George, Sam and Chloe were all loyal, full of love and I still miss them to this day. Never regretted buying them. :)
@janebridger31263 жыл бұрын
Excellent video regarding the cons of owning a Cavalier as they are not suitable for everyone. Personally, I would not even consider another breed - I now have my 3rd Cavalier. For me, the saddest part is the health issues. My 1st Cavalier, Rossie, was a day short of 13 years when he passed away from MVD - he was almost 11 before any heart issue was diagnosed. Oscar, my 2nd Cav was only 9 1/2 when he passed, also from MVD - he was 9 when the vet told me he had MVD, but sadly, unlike Rossie, he deteriorated very quickly indeed. Now I have Jasper, who is 2 years and 10 months old, and luckily no health issues detected so far. I think the pros far outweigh the cons, but do agree shedding can be an issue, but it is not THAT bad! Regular grooming is the key, so I think anyway. However, I don't agree with bathing any dog too frequently - it destroys the natural oils present in the fur. That said, again may I say your video is excellent and people do need to do their research before deciding to have one of these beautiful dogs.

I agree with everything you said about Cavs. Thankfully I'm retired and can be here all the time with Maddie, but she has a hissy fit when I start to get dressed and when I grab my purse, all she does is bark bark bark and doesn't stop until I leave. Also I really did my homework, and research when looking for a reputable breeder. I first had to pay $500 deposit long before I was able to get her and when i picked her up, I paid $2,000. But she is so worth it. I had wanted a Cav since maybe 1999 and I finally got her in 2018. Regarding "hair in your lipstick" due to shedding, I have found a solution that helps to almost alleviate the problem, providing your home has a forced-air HVAC system. I too have felt Cavalier hairs about my face for some time now. I have found by turning my forced-air system to "Circulate" for several hours, I am "hair on the face free" for two days or more after which I will again repeat. Needless to say, even if I never found this solution, Charlotte, my Cavalier, would still be by my side or on my lap every waking hour, giving me the love and joy that only she can.

I was surprised to hear they are susceptible to chiari malformation too. There was a doctor in Asheville, NC that supposedly corrected this condition in people through his novel surgery. So true that all dogs are getting pricey. Not just cavs. When my old dog cocker spaniel past away, i went puppy shopping and all dogs were the lowest 2000. Its crazy. When i got my very first cocker like 12 years ago, it was 750, when ishopped, its like 2700. Its crazy how much expensive it was. But getting my first cav was a great purchased i made.

I just lost my Cavalier she was 12 years old and I miss her something terribly she was the best dog ever I never had a problem with her shutting though but I also had her shaved twice a year so that might have helped somewhat I have to say I'm looking for a Jack Russell and cavalier mix and hopefully get a short-haired one they're very hard to find in the United States and in the Midwest well I'm actually Central but they are beautiful dogs and with the mix of Jack Russell and Cavalier you get quite a personality a more active dog and a more contented dog at the same time yep my baby was with me 24/7 if I went into a room she went into a room my sewing room is downstairs and she didn't like going up and down stairs and she would stand at the top of the stairs barking at me to come upstairs she was so sweet I miss her so much your babies are adorable ❤️❤️

Cavalier prizes in Turkey where we live are not so pricy and they are quite common. I have allergies so we ended up getting a toy poodle but still love Cavaliers. My puppy loves playing with them too, maybe in the future will have a cavalier baby too. I'm just too worried about the diseases they are prone to.

I’d say cost is the biggest con. Our cav from four months ago was $3500 CAD, but the insurance, shots, license, food adds up. Of a lab, English Springer spaniel, and a mix cairn terrier/husky, this cav is least effort concerning washing, brushing or shedding. Very calm, anxiety isn’t a concern yet. He took about three months to house break, which is about the longest I’ve ever experienced, but fine now. Quiet, and up to the odd lazy day, or running alongside in the neighborhood.

Love the video and these points are all true. I would like to add that some insurance companies rates are way higher when you tell them you have a cavalier. I consider this as a con as well.

You can mitigate the cleaning bit by getting them regularly groomed. I know a lot of people don't shave theirs, but we get ours trimmed.
@collincavalierkingcharless68898 ай бұрын
a good grooming each day also helps, train the pup to stop and have feet dried or coat rubbed down with a towel... brush out each day for at least a five minute routine, this will also help maintain hearing.. by checking ears and eyes each day .. use of eye drops helps with dry eye or tear staining... as it helps lubricate and clean the eyes. Cleaning the ears with a soft thin cotton cloth inside with your finger just doing a sweep to clean out the ears will help with buildup of wax and allert you to any ear problems... and take them to the vet right away if you see a great amount of wax suddenly as this is a sure sign of an infection in the ear that is more than the dog can fix on its' own.
@collincavalierkingcharless68898 ай бұрын
A good brushing also provides a great interaction between you and the dog,.,, who doesn;t like a great tickle of the belly with the brush cleaning the hair from his front feet to his back side? To give the best brushing use a soft bristle brush and starting at the front paw with the dog laying on his back... brush to ward the tail... it will tickle and make the back foot paddle in the air... a sure sign of enjoyment! Repeat on the other side... and then down the back and chest... brush out the ears following that with a combing from large tooth to small tooth width to make sure all the knots and any little bits of debris all gone from the ear hair... this will also stimulate the growth of hair and make those beautiful ears shine... and make you the owner of one of those cover photo worthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels!

Honestly - they shed a lot but their fur is ok in terms of structure = it can be easily removed. Short haired breeds on the other hand like pugs and bulldogs have these tiny hair that pricks into everything and can’t be removed. I used to have bunnies and their fur is like bird plummage - gets everywhere. So yeah I guess I am used to fur since I had pets all my life but still its not that bad.

Spot on! We had a male Blenheim that passed at 11.5 yrs due to disk rupture (Chiari) and a female that passed at near 13 yrs from kidney failure related to the mitral valve disease which did not present until 9 years. They both got sick at the same time and the female eventually required daily infusions of fluids and more than 17 dose of meds over 4 times a day. The female also had dry eyes and recurring serious skin infections. I say all of this so that any future owners understand how high maintenance and expensive these dogs are to maintain. YOU MUST HAVE PET INSURANCE! Over the last two years of their lives we probably incurred close to $50;000 in vet bills with insurance picking up about 90% of that cost. Having said all of that they are the most wonderful breed on the planet. They love you like no other. Despite all of the expense and heartbreak and knowing everything, we again took the plunge and acquired another this past New Year’s day. She is every bit as wonderful as our last two and we are thrilled to have her. Just want everyone know what you may be in for. Our breeder was very reputable and we were very lucky that the serious illnesses did not show up until later in life which is not always the case. If you can afford to take care of as well as are committed to the necessary maintenance, they are the most wonderful loving animals and well worth the effort!

I had 2 beautiful Cavaliers one like these guys name Alvin, and a tri color named Roxie. Did not have the anxious and were great because they had toys and activities. Down fall was Fox tails getting out of their fur and ears. Yes Love Sponges, but what took them was heart failure, and it was hard, we were heart broken when we were caring for our Fur Baby. Also check into Credit Care for a credit card, it is better than the health insurances, you have to build up the insurance amount before you can use it. This is not a advertisement for Credit Care, but I use it only for my dogs, it can be used for dental and doctors co pays if they accept it. But mine is my fur babies. wish i could share my pictures. Thank you for putting out this video it brought tears to my eyes seeing your puppies (Alvin look a likes). Not to detour new owners but to give them the paws up on this breed. Hugs and Pets for a former King Charles Mommy.

I had a mix cav two months shy of 17 years when I had put him to sleep and the shelter said he was about one year old when I got him. He was such a joy and had about 10% hearing left and went down quickly the four months before his death. The classic signs of stumbling, depression, incontinence and no interest in the local wild turkeys and rabbits. He did have a heart murmur the last six years, but no medication was required. He was a great dog and so missed. I hadn't suffer such grief since my parents passed away.

Yea mai 100% agree. Lady has severe Sm now as I was saying to you in my message this morning she has been diagnosed with corneal dystrophy too so now has to be put on a low fat diet I can’t put her on raw food now. I have had to clip her off due to her Sm being so bad. (Which I was crying as I took it off it took me 30 mins to even start) Her nails on the side affected are ground right down, she has a head tilt and it makes one ear look longer then the other, if u watch her the way she carries herself you can tell. One day when you meet her just watch her. She can be stand offish to new dogs just telling them do not touch me on this side. Most dogs can tell something isn’t right with her so are gentle and careful but it is destroying to watch your baby getting worse and you can’t cure it. If I could swap places with her I would. But she has a quality of life her meds are helping. And as long as she has that she will carry on being here. When she gets to the stage she can no longer take it I will do the right thing by her and let her go. No matter how hard that will be for myself I will do it for her as it’s only right living in pain everyday isn’t fun and I see owners take it too far as they are selfish. As for their sheddings I’d invest in a Mars coat King and just rake the undercoat fluffy bits out to ease shedding:) lady has never sheded as I used to keep on top of her coat taking the dead hair out when she was long. The only hair I used to find on the floor was the ones she scratched out due to her Sm. And I clip her now so hardly any shedding, mind u blenheims do shed more then Ruby’s lol. But health tests all the way I beg of anyone getting one please make sure they are mri scanned and had every test going and make sure the grades are good. Ideally you are looking for a CM grade of 0-1 anything higher can lead to Sm. In saying all of this lady is my intire world! I wouldn’t trade her of any other dog she is my best friend and I think what would of happened to her if she ended up with someone else? She was ment to be for me for sure. And by you spreading this word on this platform you are saving cavs. We need to keep spreading the word to but a stop to it as it’s totally wrong selling dogs and not testing them a good breeder will not make a profit from breeding xoxo

Handy - People who don't want a breed that has a high risk of health problems. My parents had to put one Cavalier down at less than five years old due to a spinal issue. Heartbreaking seeing this dog look at my parents as if asking for help because it had a very hard time moving and would yelp in pain. THEN, because they loved the personality/temperament so much, they tried another Cav. Last week it was diagnosed with a heart problem. He is only 4 years old. So now the dog is not allowed to run and has to take medication. Not sure if he'll have a few years left... or months. Oh! I almost forgot. Because they are a brachycephalic breed they often have issues with their eyes and their breathing. Both of my parents' Cavs have had problems with their breathing. I think it is actually reprehensible that people continue to produce brachycephalic breeds when it is well-established that the shortened heads cause health problems.

I adore cavaliers. I have two precious angels 👼🏻 in heaven, that I still miss 10 years later. I have two now, 1 is 10 and very healthy. Absolutely no illnesses at all, so far. I have another who is almost 13. She has a minor heart issue, but is on medication and doing really well. To me they are the most perfect dog in the entire world. I get my girls groomed, as I’m disabled. They are ideal for me, because of their beautiful natures. So loving and sweet. I’m home most of the time, but when I’m out, they have a doggie door and can come in and out at their pleasure. I even leave the air con on for them in summer. They both sleep with me and love to snuggle. My girls both came from the same breeder and have never been I’ll until my sweet old 13 year old lily acquired a heart murmur last year. I’m buying a ruby cav next year to introduce to my girls, so Lulu, my 10 year old will be used to her, before her sister crosses the rainbow 🌈 bridge. I always have 2 cavs at a time, so when I’m out, they have each other. I don’t care about the shedding. It really isn’t that bad. It’s cavvy glitter. 😂 In the hot weather, I get them clipped of, just leaving the ears and tail growth. They are the most wonderful little dogs. I will never buy any other breed. They are so perfect and adorable. I can’t wait for another puppy.

I'm getting my cavalier puppy on Wednesday 😍 but it honestly shocked me when you said some are around 5000$ now! I'm from Germany so maybe it's different here but there's also a huge demand and waiting lists are usually 1+ years with reputable breeders here but my puppy cost 1700€. I just got lucky to get mine rather quickly bc the family he was promised to is from France and because of covid they can't travel to Germany to pick him up and the breeder messaged me about the special circumstances. I've been looking for more than a year too though!! So excited it all worked out now!!!

I love cavaliers but if they do get heart issues it is so very sad watching them decline, lost my little Ruby girl at 6 , I knew she was struggling, she was on heaps of meds try to help but in the end struggling to breathe I took her to emergency after hours vet and had to hand her over in the car park because of covid.I got home and phone was ringing, she'd gone. Devastating . At first I said no more cavs..but they are just the best dogs ever..sooo ..I have two little cav boys now Monty and Winston. Hopefully they will stay heart clear, their breeder had done all health checks but no guarantees. Still worth the risk though they are such special little souls.

So she went from me home, me home every other day woth my mom always home, and now shes home alone evey other day. I go back full time in two weeks. Ive been lucky to have a slow transition away from the cav and its been really helpful for her. Minimal crying. Maybe a few minutes max and then she sleeps So the separation can be possible with these cavs Im not allergic to dogs but im so allergic to pollen and ive already gotten hives from pollen on her fur lol
