Another thing that keeps homes messy is when you don't have a "home" for every item. If you know where your things are SUPPOSED to go - if they have a designated home - then tidying up doesn't take that long. It's when items don't have a home that you wind up shuffling them around and never putting them away, because they don't have an "away" to get put to!
@minimaladjacent4 ай бұрын
Minimalising helps that a lot but there's always those idk where it goes items. Junk drawer junk totes.
@juliegolick4 ай бұрын
@@minimaladjacent I legit have a recurring task on my calendar once a month to find homes for things that don't have homes. It really does just tidying up so much easier when everything - literally everything - has a home. Since I'm a visual person, sometimes that home is "on the coffee table next to my computer" or "on the edge of the tub" or "on the floor next to the window," but that IS their home.
@Julies-in-a-mood4 ай бұрын
Spot on! For me, the item has to fit EASILY into that “home” space. If I have to move things to make room, I’m not going to do it.

@katie77484 ай бұрын
Yep. That's how it is for us. So much of our stuff doesn't have a home yet. We moved quite a while ago now and are *still* surrounded by boxes because we have nowhere to put things. And, no, we don't need to downsize. Too much stuff isn't the problem. The problem is there's nowhere to put what we *do* have. Along with a huge chunk of our belongings, we got rid of 95% of our furniture (such as dressers and bookshelves) and cannot find/afford decent replacements...not even secondhand. Money is extremely tight so even a fifty dollar piece would cost too much. Not only that, but we don't want "good enough for now" furniture as that's what we've always had. We want older, sturdier pieces with actual character and design. Alas, needle in a haystack. So we just deal with boxes. Oh, and we'll be moving again in a couple years (hopefully for the last time!!) so we don't want to have to move more big, heavy things than necessary. It's not ideal but oh well.

Then we divised all of this in time management : once per day, once per week, once per month, once per year and between each of us

Keeping that schedule has helped me to manage my energy levels without burning out. My kitchen is done on Sunday from the floor, table, counters, and dishes. Monday is the laundry only and I might do a quick pickup. Tuesday is the bathrooms. Wednesday is the bedrooms. Thursday is living room. Friday is getting any issues I missed. Saturday is doing as little as possible. I’ve 4 kids and a dog yes there will be little messes here and there to clean up or take the trash out or do the dishes more often. I declutter 3 times a year. It’s getting time to declutter again around my house. 😉 Daily cleaning and steady decluttering makes life easier to deal with.

Honestly, creating an adult version of a 'gold star' system is the most effective I have been in years. 😅 It sounds ridiculous, but for me, I have not been this consistent in years. Basically, I have 10 daily tasks, and if I complete them all, I get to fold an origami butterfly, and add to my collection in a giant glass vase. (could also be done with beads, if people are not into origami). Goal is to fill up the vase, so I get a decoration piece out of it. And once it is full, I will consider myself 'rehabilitated', lol. You could even add a value to each one, that you get to spend once it is full. It is funny how a visual representation can help you see the things you do get done, but it does. I usually go from 8pm to 8pm, but you could still go midnight to midnight if you want: - Wash face (soap, a serum/treatment, cream) - Brush teeth - Go to bed at a decent hour (weekdays 11pm or 12 pm, weekends 1 am or 2 am) - Don't snooze more than 5 minute - Shower (use soap AND body lotion) - Brush teeth - Every room must be 'company ready' when I do my 'inspection' at 8pm. (I have 4 - entryway, kitchen, bathroom, combined living area/bedroom) They seem simple, but some of them is a struggle for me. I have not been good at taking time for skincare. Or going to bed at a decent hour. I aim for 11 pm, but before midnight is acceptable for now. Point is to create motivation, not beat myself up. Snoozing is a serious struggle for me, and it is still hard - but I have had so much more time in the morning after starting this. Showering with soap is a given, but my skin is actually improving, because I now make time to put on body lotion after. The 'company ready' just means that you would not be ashamed to have company over. (doesn't need to be perfect) If something is not company ready, I can either do the things needed to get it there, or I can accept I don't get my 'gold star' that day. Which really sucks for some reason - so it actually adds motivation to deal with it now, instead of leaving it for tomorrow. A quick look around the room, it will often be fairly clear what needs to be done. For example, a dirty toilet, sink or dirty dishes or counters, dirty laundry on the floor, would not pass for me. But a tiny bit of hobby projects out on the table, an exercise mat on the floor, or a book I am reading on the coffee table is perfectly fine. So I highly recommend this if you are a visual person, who tends to beat yourself up a little too much. 🙌

These are all such great tips! One ✨trick✨ that has helped me to decrease the "mental load" and to be more consistent (not always, but better...we're realistic here) with cleaning out the fridge is putting it as a monthly reminder on my task/to-do app. Doesn't matter what app you use (I find it's nice to use one JUST for household stuff, myself...especially if I can make different lists within the app), but having them on your phone/laptop is great! You can create repeat tasks for daily/weekly/monthly chores, so that's helpful. That let's you decide how often things should be done. For me, I have the fridge set for the end of the month...but I have the pantry set to be decluttered and reorganized mid-month. This way, I'm not trying to do BOTH at the same time, and if I get behind on one or the other (which does happen), it won't likely bleed over timewise into the other larger project. See what I mean? ✨ The trick is to use an app like this to remind you of what you've already decided to do so you don't have to think about it. Plan things out like this and tweak it as you need to for your home, but this kind of thing can really help with the mental load, for sure! Even when you're tired, you can trust yourself that you made these decisions when you were well-rested. Of course, life and health reasons can always mean we choose to reschedule something. The point is that the reminder is there to help you become more consistent. Sometimes, we make the decision NOT to do that task at all, and that's OK, too, because we know that the reminder will come back up next week or next month--depending on the task. It allows you to give yourself some Grace when you need to without being afraid you'll forget to take care of it. I hope someone finds this helpful! It helps me to get all of the lists out of my head, so maybe that will encourage you, too. 🙏💜

I love the 15 minute method! I dedicate 15 minutes of cleaning per room in my house. This is what it looks like - I clean the kitchen for 15 minutes, then I go to the front room for 15 minutes, then, since the kitchen usually needs a lot more attention, I go back to the kitchen for 15 minutes, then to the great room for 15 minutes, back to the kitchen for 15 minutes, to the master bedroom for 15 minutes, the bathroom for 15 minutes, etc. This way, every room in the house gets some attention everyday. I incorporate many of the cleaning strategies you teach in my 15 minute routine. I think I have adult attention deficit and can't bear the thought of spending an hour cleaning one room. It helps break things up and, like you said, when you're on a time limit, you cram as much work as you can into that 15 minutes. Thanks for all your amazing tips and ideas! I now try avoiding going under or behind furniture everytime (im the only 1 who knows if it clean there) Mornings i try yo put on laundry first so something is getting done while i do other stuff. Soak things you want to clean spray n wait or in a container to soak. If you have 2 bathrms clean 1 toilet overnight or if you go for a few yrs or day trip. Keep shoes at the door, outdoor stuff at the door, worn clothes hang up but away from clean laundry ...in our house qe have coats n shoes at the front door, and a changeroom by the bathrms instead of "the chair". Sometimes dump stuff in totes (min doing that a decade idk before that)to deal w it later..other times deal w the tidying, sorting , vac/dusting then cleaning-spring cleaning level. Papers or laundry usually sorted from the dumping tote piles . I Always have a donate box, garbage bag, recycling, e waste etc spots. As i come across it i put it in the right spot. Less stuff you have less stuff to clean or churn.

Growing up, my mom had a house cleaner that came every 2 weeks. In between she cleaned, organized, tidied every day and then the day before everyone did the “Maria Shuffle.” Which basically meant, everything you’ve been putting off, gets done the day before the cleaning lady came, so that when she came she could clean. Now that I’m a mom, I do the same thing, except I’m the cleaning lady. I make a schedule so everyone is on the same page. “Wednesday is cleaning day. Get all your stuff put away.” Then I prepare as though I’m tidying for the cleaning lady. I do deep cleans of ignored areas, put away all the paper and clutter, ect. That way, when the cleaning lady shows up (me), she can work!
