Definitely agree! I waited watching this video because I wanted to see the comments :) I've learned that I am a bumblebug - and that a lot of other people are crosses too. I also live with a butterfly... a very butterfly, butterfly. (Sorta reminds me of Ariel's husband). We are actively working on getting our space to work better together - and me getting my stuff together, so I can find things fast when he goes 'where are the new sponges? Where are my pants?' ...... the man didn't know he had two drawers worth of socks, he had them in so many damn places lmao

I completely agree! I even feel the need to tell everyone. It takes time to organize, but you feel you're in the right direction if you know your style! And clutter stops from growing so I get to eventually organize everything. Everybody should feel this way!

I used to hang everything on the door handles around my house because Im a butterfly but now that I know that I've put over the door organizers and hooks up all over all the doors. It's not everyones idea of beauty or efficiency but all my life I just thought I was a slob and it turns out I just really like seeing my stuff and I like things I use all the time to be in the thresholds of rooms so I know they're there and can grab them easily as I leave a room. It's so nice to have my stuff on the back of doors but not breaking my door handles or preventing my door from fully opening or closing.

You talking about your husband actually really resonated with me. You said something about maybe he had been told for a long time that he was just a messy person which led to him not even want to try. That really hit me because my mom’s organization / housekeeping style is so different from mine. Growing up, she was very particular about it, and I was told many times I just wasn’t cleaning up to standard. Come to find out, I’m a very put together and organized person in my own style. It’s a good reminder that as homemakers, we need to be sensitive and aware of the styles of all those living in our home. We need to be willing to be flexible in order to support and encourage our children so that they can learn what works best for them as they enter adulthood.
@jocelynsmyth660410 ай бұрын
That sounds a bit like my beau, nothing was ever good enough, then he lived alone/with room-mates, and it didn't matter at first..... and then it got overwhelming and he just didn't want to do anything. Now we've been living together for three years, and while I knew I hoarded, he didn't know he did, and he's really resistant to change. We're working on it together.

Finding Cas was a godsend for me, because it meant I discovered I was a butterfly, which meant finally knowing not just why I failed so badly to keep things organised but how I could fix that. Which we have been doing by among other things, we scrapped the standing wardrobes in our bedroom and created an entirely open plan clothes wall for me and an open Pax wardrobe for him being an also visual Bee. And its worked! Plus also must credit Melanie from A Hoarders Heart has helped me with the emotional side of dealing with clutter and also is a fellow butterfly. 🙂

I love Cass's and your videos. I'm so happy for this collab! I'm a butterfly in how I put down clutter (where it's easy to find), but I'm a butterfly in the sense that I don't want to see my stuff because I find it ugly and the visual clutter makes me feel overwhelmed. I've started using baskets with great success. I love how Cass says that the four bugs are divided by people who manage their time differently: two want to put things away quickly and are okay with taking extra time to find items, while the other two are willing to take time to put things away so they're able to find things quickly. I almost cried. I'm not lazy--I just use my time differently. What an amazing revelation!
@oxigen8510 ай бұрын
Yes I loved that realisation about using time differently! My bf just drops things pretty much wherever ("Football squished into the book shelf, next to the cleaning spray and water bottle? @arizonashopper509510 ай бұрын

It took me a long time to figure out my clutterbug style, but the key turning point for me in figuring it out a year or so ago was her recommendation to look at areas of your home that you are pleased with and consistently function well for you. I found two small spots in my home that I really loved and were never an issue, and I had a revelation! Ohhhhhhhhhhh, I am SO a visual person and did not realize it at all. I had thought I was a hidden type because I’m easily overwhelmed by too many things, so I simply assumed I wasn’t visual. In reality, I want to see every last item I have out in plain view, I just want it to be non-chaotic and visually pretty. My solution to this, was to minimize the amount of items in my home and then to treat all items I have as decor, it just so happens that I can stir the soup with my decor LOL! I even have a rule for myself that if it can go on the wall somehow, then put it on the wall 😂. We don’t use closets anymore either, but have an open wardrobe wall. In the end, I think I’m a Bee in her system because I like to put things in pretty rows and decant stuff into jars and things. That revelation that day has changed my entire home! As for my husband, I’m not sure what he is, but he seems to be fine with using whatever visual system I set up, he’s just not as particular about how exactly things are placed, so maybe he’s a butterfly. Thankfully, if he sets something down out of place I don’t mind putting it back in the home I’ve created for it. The only time we run into issues is like your husband and the cards. If he has a project he hasn’t finished it sits out, and boy does that bother me! Thanks for the delightful video! It’s gotten me thinking about how to resolve that issue!
@HereIAm24710 ай бұрын
The genius thing about Clutterbug is, you don't have to constrain yourself to one type all over the house. :) I also had a hard time identifying my type, because I use strategies from all 4 bugs depending on what I am dealing with. (though my main type is a bee, I think) For example, for clutter I have yet to sort trough, I put in baskets and hide in a closet. For often used Items, I prefer very visual and easy to get out/put away. For my makeup/self care products, I use micro organizing. But for other things, for example off season clothes that is stored away, I use more macro organizing. Because here is the thing: different areas of the home have different requirements. So it makes a lot of sense to use different strategies in different areas of the house. :)

My space used to look like a home invasion crime scene. I had to walk across piles of mess of stuff and just have a corner on the bed for me to maybe sleep. Let me tell you, following the Clutterbug system helped me tremendously! It is easier to keep clean and STAY CLEAN if you are organized. A lot of organizers say that you should organize first then clean and I used to think that does not make sense. But they are right. Btw, I am a mix between Butterfly and Ladybug. I keep the items that I reach for most often within easy reach and inside an open bin. Everything else is out of sight out of mind but with labeling on the door to get a quick look of where is what. I have been keeping clean and organized with this system for several months now.

Could you fit a fourth bin? The card bin looks like it can barely hold one week’s supplies. Maybe even two spare bins, so that when they go to the basement he can have some time to unload them the ways he wants before they have to immediately return back upstairs?

A fourth bin would fit if they were oriented vertically, and if they were oriented vertically there would be less space in front for things to sit outside the bins. Great video, love it!

all that 4th bin will do is allowing her husband to procrastinate more, he's going to need a fifth one eventually. trust me that's my husband about our laundry basket. 2 weeks he hasn't put his cleaned laundry away coz there's a spare we could use. the spare was supposed to be a replacement coz the other broke by the handle but still useable. just haven't thrown out the broken one. he used to put away his clothes when we only had one.

I thought of that too but he might not ever empty the other bin. He might get even worse.. knowing that he has two bins and that somebody will bring the first bin to the basement... He's not going to take the time to sort it neatly back where goes

It’s good that you and your husband have macro in common. I’m a ladybug, and my husband is a bee/butterfly. He naturally organizes like a bee but has a hard time keeping up with his micro systems. He’s a stacker and a spreader, and a saver and collector. 🤦♀️ I’m a hider and a declutter-er. So there’s a lot of minimalist vs maximalist. I just compromise and figure there’s worse things in life. So, I put up with the skateboard decks (over 100 now) tools left everywhere, and tiny dragon ball-esque collectibles all over every surface of the computer/family room downstairs. I figure I can put up with all that because he takes care of yard work, car maintenance, plumbing, etc. We’ve got three teens, too, so I figure the house will never be ladybug perfect, or minimalist, but it’s mostly tidy, clean, and comfortable. I can live with that. 😁

Tried the bin thing, and it landed in his office, never to return! I’ve at least got him on board understanding that we need systems that work for both of us. So if mail ends up continually in the same place give it a bin with things that need to be filed, things that need dealt with like bills and another for things that you will consider but ultimately will be discarded like coupons or weekly ads.

Clutterbug was the absolute game changer for me!! I never could figure why most of the recommended ways never worked for me, as I spent so much time trying each one! It was because those styles worked against ME instead of for or with ME! Most styles organize in a hidden way and I am visually driven! I even decorate with visual abundance and it makes my heart happy! I am autistic and a butterfly but when I get overwhelmed I get extremely detailed and nitpick. I clean/organize and micromanage in my home if I am stressed about things I can’t control. I always called it ‘productive worrying’ but it turned me into a workaholic with fibromyalgia. I never thought to connect it with my autism because I didn’t find out until I was 58! I love cleaning and organizing and Ariel’s videos make me happy!! (Cas keeps me sane!!) GREAT VIDEO!!

Same. When I discovered that sorting pencils for hours had nothing to do with how I organize 😂 because afterward everything went into one bowl.

Centipede!!!!!😂😂😂😂 ok I love that bathroom sink idea. My vanity is a mess at all times and it's all mine. Hubby has his own bathroom.

I've been following Cas for a long time and I love her, and you! This video was a great reminder that I need to consider my husband's and teenagers' organizational types. I'm a cricket and my husband and son are more likely butterflies. I have struggled to set up a system than works for them as well.

Love this! My husband collects magic too! But he is a cricket with bee tendencies, so we bought a large dresser and place it right next to the bed, and has enough space to check and organize, that dresser has like a locker/mesh style so you can see through a little bit. Love that you hubby is a magic fan too

Yay, I'm glad you did this collaboration! Cas and the clutterbug styles really changed my approach. I love the practical solutions that have worked for you!

Your husband is a good sport. I have a butterfly hubby too and have been pushing baskets on him for years with minimal success. I am a cricket who sometimes does bee things.

Taking Cas's quiz really changed my life. I'm also a ladybug but all the organizing columns I read were geared for visual organizers. Everything out and arranged by color. I thought it was so pretty but it drove my nuts and was impossible to keep neat. Finally realizing I need most things out of sight was a real game changer. Now I'm able to keep my small house tidy and organized at all times. I divorced a long time ago, but my ex was like your husband, everything had to be out at all times. I don't know if I would have been able to "retrain" him. 😅

As a former Magic (that card game those cards are from) player, I was thinking those baskets would be too rough for the cards. And I noticed the paper that got added to line the baskets haha. Probably need a smooth basket for those. Then again I would also try to keep dust from landing on them.

WOW! Cas is such a great, inspiring and knowledgeable Person! And she has such a positve energy! I just LOVED this video, thank you both for so much insight, info and inspo!!! It is very interesting to learn how we can shape our habits with such a simple gadget as baskets on the buffet... of course all habits are rabid dogs... But I like the idea of tackling them, and the mothods in this video make so much sense to me. Thank you!

Loved this collab, and happy to find you! I've been following Cas for years, and am very, very much a Cricket (I have to see things, but also need it micro-organized). But knowing what YOU are can be the easy part. Finding out what organizational styles the other people in your house are, AND getting them to stick to an organizational method is the hard part. My husband and son are also butterflies and my house is a series of piles of things my husband is in the middle of, and stuff from school that my son just drops everywhere. I'm going to watch your minimalist and cleaning videos now, to get me back into the mood of tackling the mess--and trying to get them to adopt an organizational system--AGAIN.

That beautiful mtg cards pile... I'd say me and my partner have the same problem, but we are both crickets, so our collection is beautifully organised and kept out of sight.

For his cards, try hanging a shoe organizer on hooks on a wall or behind a closet door. He can still be able to sort his cards and take it downstairs easily. Install hooks for the sorter down there, as well.

The clutterbug system was an eye opener for me. I am definitely a bee, but I think my husband is a butterfly. He is amused by my love of labeling everything.

I don't usually comment, but I really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much for sharing the toothbrush organizer. I have trouble with mess on my bathroom counter due to lack of space and maybe a few too many products...lol I didn't know these were a thing and I'll be buying one today.
