Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestine, and can cause a variety of digestive problems and related health issues. Triggered by eating foods containing gluten, patients must avoid gluten in order to reverse and prevent further damage to the small intestine. Jessica Lebovits knows first-hand all about celiac disease as she has been living with the disease for years. She is a well-known GI expert registered dietitian who specializes in working with celiac patients to help them understand and adopt a gluten-free diet. In this episode, Jessica explains 5 key things you need to know if you (or a loved one) have been diagnosed with celiac disease. She also shares her favorite resources and tips to help you navigate dining out and traveling on a gluten-free diet. You can find some of her favorite gluten-free foods and recipes @gluten_rd on instagram and check out her courses on GI OnDEMAND: Celiac Disease 101 and Celiac Disease and the Gluten Free Diet.

I disagree about makeup. Your body does absorb gluten in makeup. I had to totally quit wearing mascara from the WHEAT GERM OIL in gluten. I know more about this that your guest. I've studied it on my own for 9 yrs to keep myself alive. I am sorry she is not well informed in my opinion. Schar is NOT GLUTEN FREE. I can prove it!.OMG! This girl is not as educated as she thinks she is. I can prove it! This upsets me!

Do you have celiac disease or are you gluten sensitive? I have celiac and wonder if I would actually have to digest to have an issue whereas someone that is gluten sensitive might need just to touch it. Your comment about the Schar,..my doctor told me I might develop reaction to other grains just as though they were wheat. I had an issue with rice and I know some of those bread products use rice.

Okay.... so you're the top of the gluten tier I see, proof and everything. If she's the expert you have to be the know it all. I really love listening to know it alls as they really do seem to know it all and if they don't, they'll just disagree with you anyway and tell you you're wrong even though you're actually correct and tell you how much more they know than you even though you the expert have witnessed more peoples objective health status verses subjective other than your own but yet somehow they still know more than you. Hands down. Thank goodness for the rude know it alls. If we would just all listen to them verses the experts we will def be great with being hard headed and possibly messed up. What a combo there. I think I'll stick to listening to the experts!

In the late 1950's I was diagnosed with multiple allergy triggers. Wheat topped the list. At this time CELIAC was not known, My symptoms included diarrhea and fatigue as well as horrible skin problems. Now it is known that I have what is now called Celiac disease and besides the interior problems, I have something called "Dermatitis Herpetiformas". I don't know which symptom is worse. Neither is fun. I am 72-years-old now and I think that part of the problem with this disease was the manipulation of wheat seeds - genetically modified wheat seeds. I don't doubt that this manipulation of wheat seeds was done to help make stronger and more abundant wheat crops, but it messed with our pure systems.

Kiss away? No enough research shouldn't be a green light for kissing without any caution. Please, at least, inform and educate people more responsibly. Common sense is, at least, good mouth higiene with a gluten free tooth paste prior to kissing. It doesn't hurt to be cautious. If kitchen utensils can be contaminated how wouldn't your partner's mouth be? Well, on the other hand, thanks for the data on celiac dating behavior.

Thank you for your comment. Respectively, the RD was referring to grains that do not contain gluten,. Please see this evidence-based article www.healthline.com/nutrition/9-gluten-free-grains Hope that helps clarify any confusion.

I’m waiting on my antigen tests right now, and several other tests. This has been really helpful. I was going to go cold turkey off gluten, I guess I should go minimal and wait and spend my time researching. I have MS, another auto immune disease and apparently there’s a connection. 11% of celiac patients develop MS. I may have answers soon, finally, after a life time of suffering with stomach issues. Thanks for the info.

@@val6189What have you learned so far? Apart from certain KZbin members having a tendency to post vague frictional nonsense? I've had celiac for most of my life. Celiac sufferers also have ibs. My symptoms were ignored for years and because they were, my condition at the moment is not very good.
