Something I didn't mention in the video.....the weather....the winter in New Brunswick is rough, lots of snow and if you are close to the coast, the winds will be brutal, but hey, it's Canada.
Let me know what you guys think! Thanks for watching!

One thing that people should consider about small town life. The locals are very friendly, but often not interested in making new friends. Their friends are the people that they grew up with. This can make life surprisingly lonely for newcomers.

I'm considering moving close to there. 15 minutes away. My parents live an hour down the hi way and their health is getting worse. I'd like to be there to help them. Are these horror stories mentioned here true in your little community? I've spent quite a bit of time in French communities in northern Ontario and was always treated well. I've worked in many types of construction and trucking jobs. Would I have a hard time finding a job near Grand Falls? Would finding a family doctor for my family be difficult? Any feedback would be appreciated. I found a nice little house for my family but am hesitant on moving when so many people have nothing good to say about NB.

It's refreshing to hear you speak the truth about NB. I transferred to Moncton for my job several years ago. I had moved from PEI, prior to that I lived in Halifax and Toronto. Moncton had by far the friendliest people I've ever met in my travels. Comparing Moncton to Toronto, it's a small town. Yes, you get bored, and yes you will find yourself driving to Halifax for some excitement. Here's my input of NB: It's Rural - It's so rural the gov't put moose fences along the highway so they don't wander on the highway causing accidents. How's that for being rural? Jobs - Good luck finding one, especially if you don't speak French. A lot of good jobs require being bilingual. Transportation - You definitely need a car Housing - it's dirt cheap, it's not a place to invest your money it's a good place to retire if you like the quiet rural life. Landscape - I fell in love with the landscape of NB and I'm not a landscape person. I was transferred out of Moncton after 5 years, I missed it. After many years away I went back for a visit last year and was terribly disappointed how the mayor and city council let the place get run down. Some of the streets look like drug infested ghettos. City council should be ashamed of themselves.

I am sure that the slight was not intentional but you will probably have a lot of privacy if you tell a Martimer their cities are not big enough to be called cities. One thing that a lot of Canadians have in common is the love to hate Toronto. Why you might ask? Well, Toronto is nothing like the rest of Canada, which is made up of rural areas and small towns and cities. They especially like the differences like a lack of smog, not sitting in traffic for hours and the lack of crime.

Moved back here, purchased a nice house 8min from Moncton(tiny baby toronto-like), probably the best location in the entire province. You have an international Airport, and are close to everything scenic & 2 other beautiful provinces, PEI & NS. Price of this house was amazing. However I wish I moved 1 year ago, because it's almost as if everything went up about 100k on average, and bidding wars are crazy out here... expect to pay 30-50k or more over asking, but if you live in Toronto etc, that's nothing to complain about 😅. Bringing your job is probably important, I work in the medical field, and looking at what's around me, people doing similar professions get paid significantly less. Like 20-50% less sometimes, which makes no sence. Also be ready to take over 2years for a family doctor, and hospitals are slower out here then other provinces. (Wait times of 3-12hrs or more sometimes I've seen) The big thing now is that every 2 weeks it takes me about 2hours to mow the lawn, so be ready to buy, and operate lawn tractors, snow blowers and such, or pay a local company, but Hey that's not even 1 months cost of using the 407.

I have lived in many cities and travelled to most cities in all of Canada and I'd say that: 1. Metro Moncton has a population of 144,000 so it is easily a city, and not a tiny town. 2. Public Transport is great here but you can get around on foot if you live and work downtown 3. Job demand in most sectors are way up, we don't have nearly enough skilled workers for most of our industries, it is certainly Not restricted to the three you named. 4. We have high speed internet, even in rural areas, Rogers covers huge parts of those. 5. Average cost of a home is around 250k, but yeah, still affordable From someone who lives here, I'd say the real downsides are: 1. Insanely low vacancy rates 2. Rising costs of homes 3. Homelessness 4. Double property taxes for secondary homes or rental units 5. Low wages
@rps1689
@rps1689 2 жыл бұрын
I doubt you could get a home now for 250K, but no lack of them listed for that price, as realtors list way below comps. How do you like the winters in Moncton? Is it very windy in the winter? I have only been there in the summer and it was nice and warm. It will be interesting to see if more investors will be attracted to buy up houses when the property tax on non primary homes will be reduced to half of what it is now. I find the property taxes are already high on primary residences not to mention utilities.

The mosquitos . You forgot our blessed mosquitos lad . Big as birds . Maritimers have a special kind of sense of humour needed to live out here . Were are used to hard times , lack of work , dangerous jobs for little pay , hard , cold winters with the bitter winds coming off the ocean . But living here has brought our small communities so close . When someone gets sick , everyone helps . We still look after each other . We make a party out of any occasion , and some one always has an accordion on hand to get it going . Chances are you may not get financially rich in The Maritimes , you may find wealth in other ways . Chances are you may not even get to be upper middle class in NB. I recall the days when everyone helped, but nowadays that is mainly for locals (as in each other, as you say) not newcomers from other provinces where there is no lack of profiling and using them and even many instances of disdain for NBers that have returned to NB after being absent for years or decades. It's too bad the small communities couldn't stand up to the government's and Irving's doings over the years instead of being primarily observers and sycophant-like. So sad to see a province with such potential where its electorate aren't real real participants in creating NB in regards to the economy and a democracy.

I came across Canada from the Okanogan valley 13 years ago. I moved to Monkton because I thought it was a smaller town and because of a certain church I want to go to. Monkton to me is not a small town, but it might be from someone who comes from Vancouver or Toronto… it is very nice living out here. The people are very friendly and is bilingual French and English. I live above Moncton, which is considered a country and it’s very nice… I have not seen Moncton stop growing even in Covid apartment buildings everything we’re being building houses constantly being built out here… the winters sometimes yes they can be a little harsh, but anywhere in Canada you get winter.. but I’ll say one thing that really surprised me living out here the most time that you see people go shopping is when there’s a storm people flock to the stores when there’s a storm… or just before the storm hits all the stores will be really busy… the weather out here doesn’t stop people they just live through it.. it’s not as bad as what some people may think.. I lived in the Okanogan Valley and they had lots of snow and it was -20 out there as well as it is here… there’s lots to do nice beaches, The Ocean, the zoo.. end it doesn’t look like it’s really bad for jobs out here either. I always see a sign up help wanted or jobs available. People out here are very busy in business and working… so unless you’ve been out here in New Brunswick then I don’t think you should really be telling other people if they should move here or not, or if they would like it or not..

The rurality of NB as a whole is a bit overstated: it's certainly true that it's relatively underdeveloped and that it lacks metropolises (it definitely has "cities", but no metropolises), but it's also a very small place. While it's easy to find yourself surrounded by trees, you can't be in NB and be as "far from civilization" as you can in some of the other, larger provinces. You're unlikely to have trouble finding a good internet connection unless you really go out of the way. Also, NB is approximately 70% English and 30% French, and while there can be a lot of French protectionism in the more francophone regions I get served in English almost all the time, including in French neighbourhoods. I don't want to turn this into a language thing... But English speakers should feel very much at ease imo.

Then I began to understand what "the middle of nowhere" and "nothing but trees" means. You're 100% correct, NB is pretty populated throughout. If you want to drive across the province you go through village after village or at least have SOMEONE living nearby. The exception is if you go through the Plaster Rock Highway. @@rps1689 Just so you know which comment I am referring to, I'm sorry to hear folks are being priced out of the housing market. Our son was encouraging us to move out there too, we are newly retired as mentioned previously, but we both need a family doctor, and he definitely needs his cardiologist and I need my rheumotolgist. We both need prescriptions renewed on a regular basis. Sounds like this would be a difficult situation for us there. Yes, we could sell our current home for over $700,000, as people from Toronto are coming here in droves and driving up the prices, (we are in Kitchener, which is an hour west of Toronto) so that is why you see so many people moving from Ontario to New Brunswick, in turn I guess driving up your prices. We don't like it either so many coming here from Toronto, as now it is making it hard for people like our daughter and her husband to buy a home here, not to mention it is pushing up the rents here as well. We will always looking forward to visiting our son in New Brunswick, my husband went out with him for first two weeks he moved out to help him and enjoyed seeing everything and all the seafood, he loved it. But it sounds like it's best we stay here in Ontario and we don't want to contribute to the rising home prices in your province as we know what it's like here. Luckily enough, the neighbours around our son have been warm and welcoming and don't seem to object that he is from Ontario, but I don't know if that is rare? Fun facts and info I’ve lived in New Brunswick for my whole life granted it’s only 17 years but still Pros/cons Pros-there is a lot of wilderness and such which is a good thing for some,high ways are pretty good but if you don’t want to replace a ball joint in your car then stay way from back-back roads like the roads that are like and hour away from anything and you should be fine the scenes are really nice like my KZbin photo it was taken last year and the people are alright for the most part. The cities have anything most people can want there’s more car places then you can imagine and good shopping a small town like where I live you better get use to eating Mc Donald’s/Burger King/DQ bc that’s all there is for takeout oh and Tim’s can’t forget Tim’s lol. Taxes are not bad of course can’t really speak much but on avg the property tax is 1000$ or so for 1acre that’s what I’m sitting on as of now and the property tax goes up a little every year but if you live in town it’s a lot more of course. The smell of cow shit is over whelming in the spring when farmers are spreading shit for the spring, swear to god you travel from Moncton to St.John and take any back road you will get a farm every 5th house or so might not be active but once was Sussex aka Cow Town where I live you can’t travel with out seeing 10 farms in a single road so might be a cool job for some one who might want to work on a farm and then there’s the car community I’m a part of that more into lawn mowers and chainsaws but there’s a lot of people with car related businesses, trans shops muffler shops,window shops etc so that’s kind of cool and that’s just in Sussex too Cons-there is limited jobs of course little place so there’s not a lot to go around 15$/hr is good and 20+/hr and your sailing (stay where ever the hell you are for work) minimum wage is 13.50 I believe or 14 I forget it changes from year to year sometimes.most time your going to need to travel by car not a lot of subways here as far as I know and will definitely need to travel for work either in Provence like day to day job or out of country and travel back and forth cov19 has made that hard for a lot of people like someone else said tax is 15% so little higher then most so the tax on 5$ is .75c total 5.75 Gas is 1.40/L/Regular and Diesel is also 1.40(rounded both) check google as of August 9th/21 not really a con but still. Over all it’s a rounded mix of bad and good lots of sights and sees but don’t take a diesel truck anywhere too far any questions I’m happy to answer feel free😊

Can you expand on this please? Our son just moved to Riverview NB from here in Ontario, got a house for $199,000 but will be spending I'm sure $100,000 in renos. So far he loves it there and the neighbours have been warm and welcoming. He is encouraging my husband and I who are retired to come there. However, I have read elsewhere about high property taxes, high electric bills and about produce not being great. Also, we are concerned as he needs a family doctor there, and we definitely would too if we moved there, my husband has a cardiologist here in Ontario because he had a heart attack 3 years ago. Our son really should be checked by a family doctor regularly as he has some health conditions as well. So though the outdoors looks wonderful there, hiking trails, the beach, etc....we worry about things that are important to us and that we already have here. Any info you could provide or anyone else, would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

@@sylviabeck1428 This is not the place to retire if the consistency of seeing a family doctor is crucial or important for you. It takes several years to get one, and if you're lucky to get one, it is highly likely it will take 2 to 4 months to book an appointment with him or her and usually bottom of the barrel doctor at that. Specialists basically triage here so forget about seeing one of them especially a gynecologist unless you are near death's door or have been diagnosed with cancer on time. Walk in clinics are far and few between and to do not do the procedures and treatments like we see in some other provinces. Labs are terrible here, I can tell you what I know about what happened to others and myself in regards to incompetency and lack of communication with labs and walk-in clinics if interested. Ageism is a problem here also in the healthcare system. Riverview should be a very nice place for your son. Taxes are high. If your son's property ever gets assessed at 199K, will probably pay about 3300 a year. This is very high compared to BC and some other provinces, but not Ontario I think. Utilities do add up, but are probably cheaper than ON overall, but insanely expensive compared to BC. Also provincial income tax rate is double that of ON so take that into consideration when you retire. If you do decide to move here, best to buy, as this province has the worst tenants' rights in the country.

@@ew374 Saint John is an industrial city and with that comes pollution from two sources in the city - a pulp mill and an oil refinery. The city smells most of the year, but you get used to it to the point of not smelling it; it's called olfactory adaptation. Saint John pumps into the air about 200 times than Moncton does. Saint John is not a good place for children's lungs or seniors, but adults it is relatively OK. 70 days of the year here have fog mostly in the summer; this is the best time not to go out, as the fog restricts movement of air often and captures the heavy metal toxins in the air so you usually breath in more of it when there is fog. Many people in Saint John are impacted by the toxins in the environment mostly children, which many still end up with permanent damage. What is deceiving about Saint John is, even on a clear blue sky day, the AQI can be at the same level of a city with heavy smog and with accompanying forest fire smoke.

Glad it worked out for you, but many seniors especially with disabilities are getting squeezed in NB; they get the short end of the stick. No homeowners grant to reduce property taxes to next to nothing; no 50 percent discount on taxi fares, and benefits are very limited. And those on GIC only get from the NB government a measly one time annual 400 dollar senior benefit for a household of two! A senior in NB with a home or even a renter needs much more income than those in other provinces in equivalent sized communities even in BC. Interesting you find the winters here "mild"; I find them harsh, too cold, and too long, but I understand you are comparing it to Alberta. In Fredericton now there is still not a leaf on the tree yet or a flower in site and it's mid April! In this capital city, it's a nightmare in the winter, as the sidewalks are never cleared enough for those with ambulatory issues let alone able to get around in their mobility scooters. Summer are very nice, but too short for my liking.

I was born and raised here in NB, and will die here. Moncton is the city you'll want of you want the best shopping and work. Saint John is an old city and has beautiful architecture and also home to the Irving Oil Refinery. Fredericton is our capital city, but my least favorite of the 3. People are a bit more snobbish I find. If ypu choose Sussex you'll be smack dab in the middle of all 3 cities. And we're a fantastic little town. We were once named one of the top 10 places to live in Canada in Time Magazine 😊

I've lived in all 3 places and Moncton's winters are the worst of the 3, it gets by far the most snow and colder temperatures. Saint john has the mildest winters but it's very humid there, be prepared for a lot of fog year-round. Fredericton is somewhere in between the two but is the most expensive of the 3 to live in due to a VERY large percentage of the population being university and college students.

Again someone from another place that claims to be in the know! I have travelled many places in the world & guarantee you that NB is one of the best places to live in the world. Not sure what you were talking about on internet speed? Transportation and small cities? Lots of help wanted signs, construction jobs & Dieppe is also a city & one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.Where I live in the greater Moncton area the population is 140,000 people. You need to study your demographics before down playing this beautiful picturest province without even including a water view. Not sure where you get your info? And yes there are as many cold places in other provinces during the winter as well. I say come and see us and decide for yourselves. Get to know people & places for yourself. My 2 cents.

I’ve been to New Brunswick countless times and have spent a lot of time there, so I’d like to consider myself in the know. The cities in New Brunswick are small, that’s a fact. 140,000 is not big, there’s no way around that. As for internet, have you tried getting Fibre Op in completely rural areas of the province? Obviously the populated areas have internet, but I’m talking rural, we still have that problem in Nova Scotia and PEI as well, where people can’t even load a show on Netflix. I don’t hate New Brunswick by any means, but I stand by what I said, it is not for everyone. There’s a reason why it is often rated as Canada’s worst province to live in. Personally I don’t agree, there are worst places you could live in this country, but that’s just me. Thanks for the comment!

You haven't even mentioned a single good thing to support your rating other than talk in the air, while 95% of the responses here put this province at the bottom of Canada. In terms of health, low wages, poor job opportunities, unequal cost of living, the large percentage of contamination with pesticides on trees and plants, and the high rate of cancer diseases as a result. @@wikid1992 Yeah, I've been to Edmundston many times. Have often stayed there over night on the way home either to or from Nova Scotia since it is basically the half way point between Mtl and NS. I agree, I have found my French to come in very handy in Edmundston haha. It is a great little town for sure. I would like to cross over to the Maine side sometime as well. Have only ever done that from Woodstock.

The dark side of New Brunswick is bilingualism. We are the poorest province because of it. We have forced upon us a system of duality with separate education and hospital systems. The bigotry of this system favour the French to the point that English children were allowed on school buses with French kids. The Province openly discriminates against English in the government job markets and pressures businesses who deal with the Province to provide "bilingual" services which in turn means fewer good jobs for English only speakers. The English school system doesn't provide equal access to learn French and as a consequence after 40+ years of official bilingualism, most English residents have not learned to speak French and many of our children have had to leave the Province to seek work. So if your English and thinking of moving here you won't find the ideal life your hoping for in most of the Province.

Yes, one of many of the darks sides of the province. Corruption is rampant here and this place needs a few like Hilde Lisko, as seen in "Home Before Dark". Ever notice the lack of French speaking folk in the government service sector that don't speak English with good grammar let alone fluently; I sure have over the years, but if English is your first language, you better learn how to speak French fluently and not slip up. It's sad that it is hard to retain youth here and in the workplace.

Do you live in NB? Have you lived in all three cities you sited for a good amount of time? I have had, as an english person in a bilingual province, NO issues getting jobs in the decades I have worked here. There are plenty of variety in our jobs as well. Our CITIES have the conveniences of larger cities with the charms of smaller. Moncton is a shopping mecca and I'm not even including Dieppe (which is one of the cities you didn't indicate) and Riverview in that. What about the other communities? Have you been to Shippagan with its beautiful shores and aquarium? I think you better investigate the internet access as well. I think you are sorely uneducated as to the topic you speak.

Clearly you have been very fortunate with your experiences. Read some of the comments on this video and you will quickly see that not everyone is so lucky. When I talk about Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John..I am referencing the greater metro areas of these places, so yes, of course Riverview and Dieppe are included. Thanks for the comment.

I have lived in only Saint John and Fredericton for a substantial amount of time - 20 years in Saint John working and living, and both cities lack many of the conveniences of large cities. Moncton is a far cry from a shopping mecca by Canadian standards and is quite frankly mundane, but not by NB standards. It's all relative. Good to hear you had good experiences with jobs, you are an anomaly in this regards.

Moncton is no shopping Mecca... Sorry to say, perhaps by N.B standards but that really isn't saying much I'm afraid. Not when compared to Vancouver, Montreal or Toronto by any stretch.

@@brucenadeau4643 exactly. NB sucks. Cold snowy Winters, no work that pays a fair earning, the Irving's run the Province, bilingual bullpucky. Not even real French?! Moncton is a Drug City full of Crime as well as the rest of the Cities. It use to be a Beautiful place, that is Long gone.
