I came across Canada from the Okanogan valley 13 years ago. I moved to Monkton because I thought it was a smaller town and because of a certain church I want to go to. Monkton to me is not a small town, but it might be from someone who comes from Vancouver or Toronto… it is very nice living out here. The people are very friendly and is bilingual French and English. I live above Moncton, which is considered a country and it’s very nice… I have not seen Moncton stop growing even in Covid apartment buildings everything we’re being building houses constantly being built out here… the winters sometimes yes they can be a little harsh, but anywhere in Canada you get winter.. but I’ll say one thing that really surprised me living out here the most time that you see people go shopping is when there’s a storm people flock to the stores when there’s a storm… or just before the storm hits all the stores will be really busy… the weather out here doesn’t stop people they just live through it.. it’s not as bad as what some people may think.. I lived in the Okanogan Valley and they had lots of snow and it was -20 out there as well as it is here… there’s lots to do nice beaches, The Ocean, the zoo.. end it doesn’t look like it’s really bad for jobs out here either. I always see a sign up help wanted or jobs available. People out here are very busy in business and working… so unless you’ve been out here in New Brunswick then I don’t think you should really be telling other people if they should move here or not, or if they would like it or not..

It's refreshing to hear you speak the truth about NB. I transferred to Moncton for my job several years ago. I had moved from PEI, prior to that I lived in Halifax and Toronto. Moncton had by far the friendliest people I've ever met in my travels. Comparing Moncton to Toronto, it's a small town. Yes, you get bored, and yes you will find yourself driving to Halifax for some excitement. Here's my input of NB: It's Rural - It's so rural the gov't put moose fences along the highway so they don't wander on the highway causing accidents. How's that for being rural? Jobs - Good luck finding one, especially if you don't speak French. A lot of good jobs require being bilingual. Transportation - You definitely need a car Housing - it's dirt cheap, it's not a place to invest your money it's a good place to retire if you like the quiet rural life. Landscape - I fell in love with the landscape of NB and I'm not a landscape person. I was transferred out of Moncton after 5 years, I missed it. After many years away I went back for a visit last year and was terribly disappointed how the mayor and city council let the place get run down. Some of the streets look like drug infested ghettos. City council should be ashamed of themselves.

I have lived in many cities and travelled to most cities in all of Canada and I'd say that: 1. Metro Moncton has a population of 144,000 so it is easily a city, and not a tiny town. 2. Public Transport is great here but you can get around on foot if you live and work downtown 3. Job demand in most sectors are way up, we don't have nearly enough skilled workers for most of our industries, it is certainly Not restricted to the three you named. 4. We have high speed internet, even in rural areas, Rogers covers huge parts of those. 5. Average cost of a home is around 250k, but yeah, still affordable From someone who lives here, I'd say the real downsides are: 1. Insanely low vacancy rates 2. Rising costs of homes 3. Homelessness 4. Double property taxes for secondary homes or rental units 5. Low wages
@rps16892 жыл бұрын
I doubt you could get a home now for 250K, but no lack of them listed for that price, as realtors list way below comps. How do you like the winters in Moncton? Is it very windy in the winter? I have only been there in the summer and it was nice and warm. It will be interesting to see if more investors will be attracted to buy up houses when the property tax on non primary homes will be reduced to half of what it is now. I find the property taxes are already high on primary residences not to mention utilities.

Moved back here, purchased a nice house 8min from Moncton(tiny baby toronto-like), probably the best location in the entire province. You have an international Airport, and are close to everything scenic & 2 other beautiful provinces, PEI & NS. Price of this house was amazing. However I wish I moved 1 year ago, because it's almost as if everything went up about 100k on average, and bidding wars are crazy out here... expect to pay 30-50k or more over asking, but if you live in Toronto etc, that's nothing to complain about 😅. Bringing your job is probably important, I work in the medical field, and looking at what's around me, people doing similar professions get paid significantly less. Like 20-50% less sometimes, which makes no sence. Also be ready to take over 2years for a family doctor, and hospitals are slower out here then other provinces. (Wait times of 3-12hrs or more sometimes I've seen) The big thing now is that every 2 weeks it takes me about 2hours to mow the lawn, so be ready to buy, and operate lawn tractors, snow blowers and such, or pay a local company, but Hey that's not even 1 months cost of using the 407.

I moved from B.C to Edmundston, NB on June 28th 2021, without ever being here before. I moved for one reason . . . inexpensive homes. I found a full time job in 4 days at $15.97/hr, plus had two other job offers, all in 4 days. The hospital is a bit dated, as i had to go there for a small renovation accident, shopping for furniture in Edmundston sucks, but other than that it's a great small city. Not a lot of immigrants here compared to other provinces.I was born and raised here but have lived in all but 2 provinces,here is best!
@rps1689 Жыл бұрын
Glad it worked out for you, but many seniors especially with disabilities are getting squeezed in NB; they get the short end of the stick. No homeowners grant to reduce property taxes to next to nothing; no 50 percent discount on taxi fares, and benefits are very limited. And those on GIC only get from the NB government a measly one time annual 400 dollar senior benefit for a household of two! A senior in NB with a home or even a renter needs much more income than those in other provinces in equivalent sized communities even in BC. Interesting you find the winters here "mild"; I find them harsh, too cold, and too long, but I understand you are comparing it to Alberta. In Fredericton now there is still not a leaf on the tree yet or a flower in site and it's mid April! In this capital city, it's a nightmare in the winter, as the sidewalks are never cleared enough for those with ambulatory issues let alone able to get around in their mobility scooters. However, I have read elsewhere about high property taxes, high electric bills and about produce not being great. Also, we are concerned as he needs a family doctor there, and we definitely would too if we moved there, my husband has a cardiologist here in Ontario because he had a heart attack 3 years ago. Our son really should be checked by a family doctor regularly as he has some health conditions as well. So though the outdoors looks wonderful there, hiking trails, the beach, etc....we worry about things that are important to us and that we already have here. Any info you could provide or anyone else, would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
@rps16893 жыл бұрын
@@sylviabeck1428 This is not the place to retire if the consistency of seeing a family doctor is crucial or important for you. It takes several years to get one, and if you're lucky to get one, it is highly likely it will take 2 to 4 months to book an appointment with him or her and usually bottom of the barrel doctor at that. Specialists basically triage here so forget about seeing one of them especially a gynecologist unless you are near death's door or have been diagnosed with cancer on time. Walk in clinics are far and few between and to do not do the procedures and treatments like we see in some other provinces. Labs are terrible here, I can tell you what I know about what happened to others and myself in regards to incompetency and lack of communication with labs and walk-in clinics if interested. Ageism is a problem here also in the healthcare system. Riverview should be a very nice place for your son. Taxes are high. If your son's property ever gets assessed at 199K, will probably pay about 3300 a year. This is very high compared to BC and some other provinces, but not Ontario I think. Utilities do add up, but are probably cheaper than ON overall, but insanely expensive compared to BC. Also provincial income tax rate is double that of ON so take that into consideration when you retire. If you do decide to move here, best to buy, as this province has the worst tenants' rights in the country.

While it's easy to find yourself surrounded by trees, you can't be in NB and be as "far from civilization" as you can in some of the other, larger provinces. You're unlikely to have trouble finding a good internet connection unless you really go out of the way. Also, NB is approximately 70% English and 30% French, and while there can be a lot of French protectionism in the more francophone regions I get served in English almost all the time, including in French neighbourhoods. I don't want to turn this into a language thing... But English speakers should feel very much at ease imo.

Re: rurality . . . I used to think we were really rural and "middle of nowhere" until I went cross-country through Ontario. Then I began to understand what "the middle of nowhere" and "nothing but trees" means. You're 100% correct, NB is pretty populated throughout. If you want to drive across the province you go through village after village or at least have SOMEONE living nearby. The exception is if you go through the Plaster Rock Highway. But I never appreciated until I went through the rest of Canada how you're never far from civilization when in most of NB.

Fun facts and info I’ve lived in New Brunswick for my whole life granted it’s only 17 years but still Pros/cons Pros-there is a lot of wilderness and such which is a good thing for some,high ways are pretty good but if you don’t want to replace a ball joint in your car then stay way from back-back roads like the roads that are like and hour away from anything and you should be fine the scenes are really nice like my KZbin photo it was taken last year and the people are alright for the most part. The cities have anything most people can want there’s more car places then you can imagine and good shopping a small town like where I live you better get use to eating Mc Donald’s/Burger King/DQ bc that’s all there is for takeout oh and Tim’s can’t forget Tim’s lol. Taxes are not bad of course can’t really speak much but on avg the property tax is 1000$ or so for 1acre that’s what I’m sitting on as of now and the property tax goes up a little every year but if you live in town it’s a lot more of course. The smell of cow shit is over whelming in the spring when farmers are spreading shit for the spring, swear to god you travel from Moncton to St.John and take any back road you will get a farm every 5th house or so might not be active but once was Sussex aka Cow Town where I live you can’t travel with out seeing 10 farms in a single road so might be a cool job for some one who might want to work on a farm and then there’s the car community I’m a part of that more into lawn mowers and chainsaws but there’s a lot of people with car related businesses, trans shops muffler shops,window shops etc so that’s kind of cool and that’s just in Sussex too Cons-there is limited jobs of course little place so there’s not a lot to go around 15$/hr is good and 20+/hr and your sailing (stay where ever the hell you are for work) minimum wage is 13.50 I believe or 14 I forget it changes from year to year sometimes.most time your going to need to travel by car not a lot of subways here as far as I know and will definitely need to travel for work either in Provence like day to day job or out of country and travel back and forth cov19 has made that hard for a lot of people like someone else said tax is 15% so little higher then most so the tax on 5$ is .75c total 5.75 Gas is 1.40/L/Regular and Diesel is also 1.40(rounded both) check google as of August 9th/21 not really a con but still. Over all it’s a rounded mix of bad and good lots of sights and sees but don’t take a diesel truck anywhere too far any questions I’m happy to answer feel free😊

We both need prescriptions renewed on a regular basis. Sounds like this would be a difficult situation for us there. Yes, we could sell our current home for over $700,000, as people from Toronto are coming here in droves and driving up the prices, (we are in Kitchener, which is an hour west of Toronto) so that is why you see so many people moving from Ontario to New Brunswick, in turn I guess driving up your prices. We don't like it either so many coming here from Toronto, as now it is making it hard for people like our daughter and her husband to buy a home here, not to mention it is pushing up the rents here as well. We will always looking forward to visiting our son in New Brunswick, my husband went out with him for first two weeks he moved out to help him and enjoyed seeing everything and all the seafood, he loved it. But it sounds like it's best we stay here in Ontario and we don't want to contribute to the rising home prices in your province as we know what it's like here. Saint John's pollution?
@rps1689 Жыл бұрын
@@ew374 Saint John is an industrial city and with that comes pollution from two sources in the city - a pulp mill and an oil refinery. The city smells most of the year, but you get used to it to the point of not smelling it; it's called olfactory adaptation. Saint John pumps into the air about 200 times than Moncton does. Saint John is not a good place for children's lungs or seniors, but adults it is relatively OK. 70 days of the year here have fog mostly in the summer; this is the best time not to go out, as the fog restricts movement of air often and captures the heavy metal toxins in the air so you usually breath in more of it when there is fog. Many people in Saint John are impacted by the toxins in the environment mostly children, which many still end up with permanent damage. What is deceiving about Saint John is, even on a clear blue sky day, the AQI can be at the same level of a city with heavy smog and with accompanying forest fire smoke.

I’ve been to New Brunswick countless times and have spent a lot of time there, so I’d like to consider myself in the know. The cities in New Brunswick are small, that’s a fact. 140,000 is not big, there’s no way around that. As for internet, have you tried getting Fibre Op in completely rural areas of the province? Obviously the populated areas have internet, but I’m talking rural, we still have that problem in Nova Scotia and PEI as well, where people can’t even load a show on Netflix. I don’t hate New Brunswick by any means, but I stand by what I said, it is not for everyone. There’s a reason why it is often rated as Canada’s worst province to live in. If NB ever got rid of the double tax on non primary residence units or houses, then you will see much more investors and money launderers wanting to buy rentals, which will jack up rents way beyond what they are being jacked up now.

The dark side of New Brunswick is bilingualism. We are the poorest province because of it. We have forced upon us a system of duality with separate education and hospital systems. The bigotry of this system favour the French to the point that English children were allowed on school buses with French kids. The Province openly discriminates against English in the government job markets and pressures businesses who deal with the Province to provide "bilingual" services which in turn means fewer good jobs for English only speakers. The English school system doesn't provide equal access to learn French and as a consequence after 40+ years of official bilingualism, most English residents have not learned to speak French and many of our children have had to leave the Province to seek work. So if your English and thinking of moving here you won't find the ideal life your hoping for in most of the Province.
@rps16893 жыл бұрын
Yes, one of many of the darks sides of the province. Corruption is rampant here and this place needs a few like Hilde Lisko, as seen in "Home Before Dark". Ever notice the lack of French speaking folk in the government service sector that don't speak English with good grammar let alone fluently; I sure have over the years, but if English is your first language, you better learn how to speak French fluently and not slip up. It's sad that it is hard to retain youth here and in the workplace.

Most of the province is spray several times a year with glyphosate ( round up). This is done in the forests with helicopters and or planes. 3. New Brunswick has that Neurological brain disease that has affected around 38 people 6 of which has died. These things are a big concern. I was wondering if it is safe to live there?
@rps1689 Жыл бұрын
It depends where you want to live in the province; unfortunately the place most people live and want to live are exposed to high radon levels, and spraying. Aside from that the access to primary health care is one of the worst in the country. Avoid Saint John. It has Canada's largest oil refinery plus a pulp mill in the city! It has a lot of heavy metal toxins in the air. On a clear sunny blue sky day, its AQI can be as high as a big city with smog and forest fire mixed in with it' that's telling. Definitely not a place for children's and seniors' lungs. Plus not a safe for active seniors or those with mobility issues, as the cities are terrible in the winter clearing sidewalks to make them accessible. Cost of living is relatively high if you are a renter and the province has the worst tenant's rights in the country.

People who are unsuccessful from Ontario will move to New Brunswick, Successful people from New Brunswick will move to a place like Ontario!!!! .... let's face it, if Ontarians wanted to live in a green space with land and less neighbors they would just move up north or to the country so If you meet an Ontarian that says they hate Ontario, Love NB, chances are they couldnt keep up with the lifestyle.

Good points. I know folk in NB especially in Saint John that have good jobs and even businesses and homes that would give their right are to live elsewhere even in a trailer park rather then spend the rest of their life in NB in a nice house, but they stay because of the lure of their work pensions that are in the near future or duty to family. It is telling when you look at the youtubers that praise parts of this province from elsewhere especially when you learn about their backgrounds and the reasons why they came. Always evaluate the source. I have met folk from BC that have come to NB, but only came primarily for the cheap housing and some wish they never did. They should have researched the province thoroughly before coming. Most folk in BC and ON big cities do retire elsewhere in their province where it is cheaper. I do understand how it is tempting though when you only make a profit of 200 to 400K after selling your home to move to another province with cheaper housing.

I remember in the early 90's new home phones came out called the Vista 350 a few years before they were released elsewhere and it didn't take me long to figure out why....it was because of so many new phone functions that were new at the time and the corporate world is smart enough to know that if new brunswickrs can figure out how to use it then there should be no problems for the rest of the world. God I hated that province.

People are generally friendly, but it is important to distinguish, especially here, who are sycophants and doormats; it's a fine line.

@@rps1689 Why are you so mean? People are really nice and helpful in NB. You appear to have had a bad experience and take pleasure in spreading your discontent all over this website. I hope people can see that and are not taking you too seriously.

@RP S if i may ask, NB specifically in Saint John is not a good palce to migrate? Aside from the meager healthcare issue, prone to lung cancer concern, poker face people, economy/job problems, what more can you say?
