Sackville is a lovely small town that revolves around Mt. Allison. I lived there while attending Mt. A. What I can say is that the winters can be a bit hard if you’re not used to the isolation. You can get kind of cut off and stuck there in the many winters storms. As a student this wasn’t really a problem but perhaps would be if you were commuting to Moncton, or NS (the Tantramarsh can be brutal to cross in a storm and is not advisable). All things considered, if you are looking for a lovely small town then I would recommend. My niece is a nurse overseeing the ER there. She has done a lot in terms of recruiting to keep that ER staffed up, which can be a problem in other areas in the province. Good luck!

I live on Vancouver Island. You couldn't find an outhouse on a tiny parcel of land here for under half a million dollars. Property taxes are several thousands annually. And I haven't had a doctor in over 8 years. There's only 1 walk-in clinic in a city of about 100,000 people. New Brunswick obviously can't be as bad as it is here. I'm seriously thinking of moving to NB.
@rps1689
@rps1689 Жыл бұрын
To give you an idea. The capital city only has two walk in clinics and they are in the boonies - one is only open in the evenings and the other in the day. You basically have to play the speed dial radio contest and hope someone answers. as they do not take messages or book appointments. Also walk in clinics here in NB do not provide the procedures and treatments we see in some other provinces. Also lack of labs, you have to go to the hospital for most lab work and the communication between the labs and doctors is terrible. Believe me, you have better access to primary health care in BC compared to NB. I have used the BC system in the last three months and it is paradise compared to NB. Do you have any idea how much more utilities are here in NB and property taxes? As for seniors, they are better off in BC than NB especially those that rent or have a home paid for. Benefits for seniors in BC are much superior to that of what is available for those in NB. Provincial Supplements for couples on GIS in BC is three to four times more than what they get in NB. Also the pathetic benefits seniors get in NB are very socially invasive and the qualifications are ridiculous leaving a lot of seniors out whereas in BC they would not be. Also BC has Safer, which one of my tenants use; 23 percent of their rent is rental assistance. I have to remind them that they have more disposable income as renters that most low income seniors with houses in NB. No wonder so many seniors in NB on fixed incomes are cashing in on their house becoming renters; they can’t afford the property taxes, which are insanely high here and there is no discount for seniors on the equivalent of the home owners grant like they get in BC. My neighbours here in NB are renters, and they sold their house because they couldn’t afford paying the utilities and taxes, which was came to 800 a month for a small house assessed at 300K. It was only assessed at 190K three years ago.

@@rps1689 Hi, thanks for all the info. I've been living in BC (bring cash) for the past 16 years Of those, 8 have been az a senior. Yes we have SAFEŔ, a rental subsidy, but there is a maximum amount they pay out and it doesn't come anywhere near 23%. Here in Nanaimo there is The Nanaimo "Affordable" Housing Society. There's nothing affordable about it. They have set rates for their housing. After speaking with a woman there I calculated that 70% of my pension would put a roof over my head. Therr's nothing affordable about that. No, I've decided to move back to Toronto at the end of this month. I am feeling homesick. There are areas of NB where you will rarely hear English spoken (north and east), and areas where you will rarely hear French spoken (south & west). NB is officially bilingual. The reality is we are divided by language. I've lived in SW NB for 15 years (near Fredericton). I can't recall ever hearing someone speak French. The SW is almost all anglophone and the weather is, by far, the BEST!

A common theme all over the world is locals being priced out of their hometowns. I couldn’t possibly afford to live where I grew up, in San Diego, California, and moved across the country for a job. Now prices where I am in North Texas have tripled with very high property taxes. My daughter can’t afford to buy anything near me. Wages have not kept up with cost of living increases. There is a small percentage of extremely wealthy individuals who own vacation homes but spend little time in them, and cause locals to make long commutes to work since they can’t afford to live where they work. Sad situation for a lot of folks.

@@burnitdown6663 There are other provinces where you will do better if you are priced out of the condo or housing market in regards to renting, rental rights, rental assistance, and cost of living, as the proportion of renter household income spent on rent and utilities is much higher in NB than some equivalent size places in BC and Ontario where there are better jobs with higher pay. A house isn't everything especially in a place where taxes and utilities are high and access to primary healthcares is not good especially for seniors. Brings to mind that benefits for seniors in BC are much superior to that of what is available for those in NB. Provincial Supplements for couples on GIS in BC is three to four times more than what they get in NB. Also the pathetic benefits seniors get in NB are very socially invasive and the qualifications are ridiculous leaving a lot of seniors out whereas in BC they would not be. There are definitely many more positions in Moncton, but most of them are bilingual. @@rps1689 You mean they were smart enough to see through the bullshit. New Brunswick was harmed FAR more by both federal and provincial mandates than by the virus itself. The closure the border between provinces was a crime. My cousins in Fredericton could not travel to Dartmouth as their dad was dying, then passed away. The couldn’t attend the funeral. In Woodstock, because of its proximity to the border, social cues are often passed across the lines and people saw Aroostook County recover and do just fine while NB drowned.

Better places to retire to in Canada. As seniors, my wife and I left NB and have a much better and more affordable life in BC. Our access to healthcare in BC is much better than it was in NB, (NB was a nightmare especially for my wife) our groceries in BC are less expensive and the variety and quality of fresh produce is overwhelming; our rent is much cheaper, which includes utilities, basic cable, but our square footage has been reduced about 30 percent, but at least it is a newly renovated unit in a great sought after location and less cleaning for us to do. We got very lucky. The only thing that costs us a little more is car insurance and gas, but isn’t an issue for us, as we don’t insure all year round and don’t drive much. We live off of our modest pensions, interest and a decent rental income. We prefer this, as what we rent is nicer than what we could ever own. Our housing expenses including our rent. strata fees, property taxes plus having no homeowners grant is overall still less than what we paid for in rent in NB monthly. It is nice to have more disposable income now so we can take off for longer vacations abroad; not that we don’t appreciate BC’s biodiversity and Gulf Islands not to mention the mountain ranges and valleys. I somewhat used to take them for granted, but no more. So glad we chose not to stay in NB.

Most of those homes in Bathurst are getting way more than asking price, but still relatively cheap, but not for many locals that are getting priced out the Moncton. Yep, pretty much anywhere in NB has lousy access to primary healthcare, and forget about getting a specialist on a regular basis, as they triage their patients. Great summers in Shediac, but brutal cold winters. St. Stephen has cool summers, which some folk like to escape to from hotter places like Moncton and Fredericton, but the weather is nice than that of Saint John. You definitely need a decent income even if someone gives you a free house in NB, as taxes and utilities are high. Florenceville like Woodstock lacks altruism and is to a degree quite xenophobic. Rothesay is nice, but unfortunately the stench from Saint John can make its way to this area at times. Been there done that, and found the place quite boring and to an extent pretentious for a place nothing to write home about.

City folks won’t like NB to live or other Maritime provinces. To visit, absolutely! To live, there are caveats. For NB: btw, Rothesay does not stink, some very rich live there. Beautiful town, better tax rates than snooty Quispam or foggy Saint John. St Stephen is very very small and Calais Me shopping is abysmal. You can’t straddle the border to go work or live. Fisheries in the Bathurst area has diminished so much that a lot have migrated south to SJ or Moncton. Left hand side of province is English (Edmundston is more French). Right hand side is French (Acadians). You can’t compare larger cities to anything in the Maritimes. Life there is great but salaries aren’t the best. You also will find amazing people that will go the extra mile to help, compared to jammed city life dwellers who too often tend to be rude and less than helpful. The significant amount of ppl who have moved to NB have driven property prices to double in some places. Maritimes living is a choice and it is worlds different than urban city life; cities are not all they are cracked up to be. Crime rates, excessive property values, etc. Tax rates tend to be comparable in the sense of final value. Large City may have smaller tax rate but property values so high that you pay through the nose. Some Maritime towns/cities have seemingly higher rates based on smaller population needing to provide same services makes the bill proportionate in the end. Doing online research and actually living somewhere and understanding the locality are wildly different things.

@@Sargethe1st I can smell the pulp mill often in Rothesay and Quispamsis, my olfactory adaptation doesn't work well. Well I find there is no lack of rude, holier than thou, and unaccountable folk in NB; in some instances worse than when I lived in some suburbs of Vancouver and even in Calgary. What I found was the closer you were to downtown, folk especially from the suburbs were distant and a tad indifferent, but when they got on the bus or train to head home or were back home, they were the friendliest folk I have ever known. In Vancouver I was surprised how many strangers went the extra mile for me when I was sick, unemployed, and without a car for a short time; community support I could have only dreamed of when living in NB. My BC doctor even had virtual appointments with me for over a year when I moved back to NB even though she could no longer bill the BC system, as she knew from experience how poor and incompetent NB primary health care can be. I've actually had French speaking folk here in NB pretend they don't know what I'm saying and brushed me off even when I attempted to ask for directions in French. Super courteous drivers though.. I have lived and worked in NB for about 20 years and have frequented the Saint John area for over 40. The sychophancy and servility, which some see endearing or mistaken it for "nice folk" are too prominent in this province for my liking
@rps1689
@rps1689 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sargethe1st It is sad about the the folk being priced out of the market in a place like NB, as they do not have the options of going to another "cheaper" province to buy; and being a renter can be difficult, as the average renter household income spent on utilities is much higher in Fredericton, Moncton, and even Saint John than that of some equivalent size places in some of the other richer provinces. Now if you are in a position where your home is paid for, you're cost of living will be much cheaper in some of the bigger cities than those of NB hence why see a small percentage of folk retiring to NB and usually retire elsewhere in their province; most coming to NB are young families and former NBers. Property values are very high in a place like greater Vancouver, but even two transit operators wages can afford a modest house or a luxury condo, which in the long run will give them a great return on their investment. I know a couple from P.E.I that are transit operators and are thinking of downsizing on one of the Gulf Islands. As for renters, I can easily find someone a nice apartment in a coastal suburb for less than one in Fredericton that includes heat, water, underground parking, and electricity though it would not be as new as the apt in Fredericton, but still very nice and in a nice neighbourhood with labs and walk-in clinics galore. It depends where you live in a big city or what suburb you live in in regards to crime, I have never been a victim of crime living in a big city or its suburbs and I have lived in NYC, San Diego, and Vancouver to name a few, but have countless times in NB, mind you only petty crime.
