Old video, but I'm re-posting it. Below are the 5 phrases I talk about in the video:
5) "You're too quiet."
4) "Why don't you ever talk?"
3) "Are you antisocial?"
2) "Come on, give everyone else a chance to talk!"
1) "Can't you just be normal?"
This was my first social anxiety vid. Hope you enjoy and please subscribe if you'd like to see more!

it sucks having social anxiety! like everywhere i go i get comments like this - you're so quiet -why don't you talk -can you say hi really loudly -and they tell their friends she never talks -and everyone labels me as quiet -and they make jokes about me like "you talk too much" -is your whole family quiet ? -is there something that happened to you that you're so quiet -were you born like this -once someone told me "go make friends, like it's not that hard thats why god gave us a mouth" and the other friend laughed -and when the teacher gives me an award for being quiet someone from the class says "she dosen't even talk" -"i can't even hear you" -and the teacher says my name and i say here and she says my name again!!! like i freaking hate those comments like everywhere i go i get them!! it's not fair that everyone else is normal and i'm not!! >:(!!

"Why are you so quiet?" is the absolute most devastating thing you can say to me, and I get it ALL the time. And the worst part is that they genuinely expect you to give an answer as to why you are so quiet, So what does one say in response to that when you don't know the answer to that question yourself? Another really bad one is when you DO muster the courage to say something and they go, "Oh my god! She's actually talking!" Because all people with SA want to do is to be able to seamlessly blend in to a social circle without anyone noticing we're different. Saying that makes it feel like what's the point of trying to change when people are going to notice those changes? It almost confirms what our social anxiety is telling us: that people are judging our every move , and are noticing every single change we attempt to make for ourselves. Comments like that DIGRESS our progress.

It rings true. Five years old the continuos question. Why are you so quiet. Eventually i spoke up with a ring of my classmates around me and i said "Because ive nothing to say" It was true. I had plenty to say- I was incapable of doing it. I do remember that statement to them. They didnt understand. Neither did i. Im 39 years old. Am i happy. no. Im still here functioning. People dont understand true sa. . Its tough. I know one thing though. We see things that they will never see.

Hi:-) Oh my god you are so right!! Its the Same with me. I have a really bad social anxiety..and I really suffer sometimes. Today someone said to me :"can you even talk?" And "you're just smiling all the time. Nothing more." It has hurt a lot. Really, it hurts. Can't someone treat me normally? I'm always the 'quiet girl' and I feel like they won't even give me a chance to say something cause they wouldn't be interested in what I am saying anyway. And when I have the courage to say something I'll be ignored...so what's the point in talking?! Sorry for grammatical mistakes I'm from Germany. Just wanted to say that I love your videos and that I can totally relate to what your saying. It's great being not alone with that problem.

Thanks for uploading. I was nodding the whole way through, I get this all of the time. I was talking with my boss the other day and he asked me what I studied in Uni and I said psychology. And after I got explaining what I wanted to do (therapies) he actually laughed because apparently it's funny me having to talk to people and things. It made me feel sucky :( But having said that, I really think I've made progress. It's uncomfortable and I still have such a hard time, but I know I'll get there. Thanks again my dear, it really helps just to listen to someone else say the same things, it makes me feel normal, because we are.

Thank you so much for this video! I recognize myself far too well in most of these situations, especially the "are you anti-social" part. I actually used to tell myself that I didn't want to talk to people, even that I hated people, because it was easier than admitting that I *couldn't*. To make it a choice, somehow. I'm still struggling with my SA, often feeling terribly alone, but this video made me feel a little bit better and a lot less alone, so thank you ♥

@CheezInspector 11 жыл бұрын
It's wonderful that you're reaching out to educate others about SA. I wouldn't wait for others to try and understand you. I'd go ahead and tell the people you feel safe around, what's up. There's a lot of nobility and strength in saying, "I feel a little anxious right now, so I'm kind of quiet." That is a perfectly fine thing to do and you'll find most ppl are very understanding once you let them know this ... and you may even hear some ppl say they also feel anxious.

Thank you for uploading this ^_^ I am always a shy/quiet person so thats never going to change. Most of the times, I don't like to talk much. Even if Im with a friend at school during class or break. If someone expect me to say something when I can't think of a word to say then I would go in a panic mode. It the reason why I like to avoid this as much as possible so I don't have to deal with it. I don't get why people dont like it when someone doesn't want to talk or join the conversation. I usually don't feel comfortable being around with people in public unless its a friend of mine or someone from my family. The more crowded it gets, the worst for me. I just feel better when Im alone where I can relax easily & don't worry about someone else. I would get offended easily if someone asked me "if I'm Antisocial" or "can you just be normal. I rather be myself than to pretend to be someone I'm not. I don't have to say anything if I don't want to. .

I've had social anxiety for years, its really a shame because I was always the loud out going type till high school. I was bullied terribly and my home life was ruined by a cruel step father who loved nothing more than to make me feel unwanted, like a nuisance. I couldn't be myself at school or at home and that really did a number on me I guess. I'm 20 now and I'm in college trying to get over this feeling of like I'm some how wrong and shouldn't be there. It sounds like I'm bleeding emo but in all honesty im anything but. To those of you who feel the same way look around you, try to see if you can't find someone else who looks like there going through a similar situation. Having a friend in class or at work to depend on can make this issue seem much more manageable. Its tough but they will be glad you reached out to them!

You made a great video!! Thank you for this, I have met a nice man on a dating site and we have tried to meet a few times but it never worked out. We have texted for a couple months and he had opened up and told me some personal things, when he saw that I was kind, patient and non-judgemental. He just recently told me he had anxiety about meeting people, even if he has talked to them online for yrs. and the longer it goes without meeting the worse it gets and he is desperate to meet me and get through that awkward part. He says he can tell that he will be fine with me once we meet. He said if he knows I'm on my way (he lives an hour away) by the time I get there or if he comes to me, he will be physically ill. So I offered to go to meet him completely unannounced and he loved the idea, because he would have no build up time to stress about. I just hope he opens the door when I get there. Thanks again for the video and I am super patient and would never say any of those horrible, rude things to him. I'm an empath who tends to be a little introverted and can feel for others.

Hi :) I think you are SO brave to do these videos so big ups to you girl!! I go through so many of the same things. One thing I wanted to say to you about your point number 1 is that you weren't born with social anxiety. You are 'normal' in all the ways that anyone else is 'normal' (whatever 'normal' is lol). I think we socially anxious people probably started out very sensitive and along the way have been influenced by family (you said in another one of your videos that you have very different opinions from your parents - and I suspect you never felt ok to voice those properly to them?), events and other people in our lives. We worry and we are fearful but so are 'normal' people, they just worry about other things than we do. I just wanted to say try not to add to your difficulties by thinking that you were born different. You weren't, you have just ended up with your fears controlling you. You were born (and are) completely human and 'normal'!!! Be strong you will win xxx

I can really relate to this video! It has always been the worst question, as you said, not only if were quiet in the first place is this going to be hard to answer, but it will send us to that negative thinking, where you get down on yourself for not being louder or more outgoing! Loved the video, and hope to hear some feedback! Thanks! :)

One time a complete stranger started talking to me and in the middle of the conversation he said, "You seem nervous--are you nervous?" Of course, I said no, but you know how it is with SA. Then later I'm thinking to myself, "WTH?!?!" If I seemed nervous, why would you ask me that--chances are I'm very aware that I'm nervous and you pointing it out will just make it worse. I hate it when people say any of those things to me.

I understand what youv said here so well. There is nothing worse that people calling attention to one's quietness, without realising what conflict that person is already going through. Something else that makes things worse is relating to OURSELVES as NOT normal... What's being normal? Part of my social anxiety is the pressure to be normal, to integrate like "normal" people do. And the weird thing is...so many people suffer from one form of social anxiety to another, but wev all got different ways of showing it, or...not showing it...That can be by being overly loud and in everyone's faces, to drinking or taking drugs excessively, to simply being quiet and more aloof. WE need to start taking it more easy on ourselves. Take the pressure off. And realise that we are not alone in feeling alone and cut off.

Thank you for the video. Everything was explained perfectly. What a bright young lady! People don't understand how annoying and hurtful their comments can be. Why don’t we turn the tables on the insensitive person who asks such a stupid question. So next time they ask “why are you so quiet” we’ll come back with “funny, I always wanted to ask you why you never stop running your mouth. It’s dizzying hearing you talk all day….” I also hate it when people comment about how I get red. Ugh!

When I viewed the video, it flustered me because I do have a social phobia, and in this video she came off as expecting others should change the way they are so she could be comfortable. To me, that seems wrong, and I wouldn't expect others to change just because I can't accept the way they are, and they treat people. I appreciate you treating me like a person, though... everyone else makes me hate people more

Im the quietest one in class.. I dont usually hang out with my classmates cause their personality is wierd and hard to get on (and bullies). Teachers love me the most the rest of the class, (teachers pet XD). I only hang out with one friend at a time in recess... and this video is soooo relatable.. My classmates kept saying those stuffs to me always. QwQ.....

For me, the most annoying one is the gasp and sarcastic "IT SPEAKS?" comment after I finally choose to say something. I was waiting for an opening to say something through that entire exchange and also waiting to say something relevant/important because other forms of communication just aren't worth the effort. If I find the nerve to say something, I don't need a sarcastic comment following it that'll make me wish I hadn't said anything at all. And believe me, any sly words about my quiet nature, no matter how you phrase it, is nothing new to me (and YES my personality isn't a secret and telling me I'm shy isn't a revelation to me or anybody.)

***** Man I get that comment every time I meet someone new, no joke. I mean I don't want to be a jerk about it but I don't think people realize I've heard it several times. I guess I'm expected to be super outgoing and talkative to strangers but I'm just not like that? Some people just need to get to know their friends first before they can be that way with them- it takes time. Also thanks, I hope we can all find close friends like that someday if you havent already :)

This is the most relatable youtube video I have ever watched. I am almost 25 years old and I've suffered social anxiety my entire life. Even at work as an adult the other day my boss said, "you really need to put yourself out there and speak up more you're TOO QUIET". I HATEE it. I've heard these exact comments my entire life. I think people need to mind their own business. Be yourself :)

i can totally relate to everything you're saying, people need tor realise that people are quiet and not everyone has to be loud and expressive. Out of all five the one that upsets me the most is the one when people joke about it by saying 'eurgh do you ever shut up' or 'wow ... you're so loud please be quiet' it's so fucking disrespectful. Anyone who has this phobia please realise it's okay to be quiet just because some people may feel it's a negative doesn't mean it is.

Your 5 points are very valid ... As I help many people reduce their social anxiety a good tip to add on how to reduce or eliminate it is this. Work on building your self esteem whilst changing your locus of control from external to internal. One of the best ways to improve your self esteem is to take a few moments, 3 x per day to go through a list of 10 things you feel the most proud about in your life and immerse yourself in the positive feelings to get the insight into these experiences

Hey great video! I identified with it and found it funny :D I got a couple of stupid awards too as a result of my social anxiety. One was for being the second most anti social person in my year group, and the 2nd was actually from a teacher for being the "strong and silent" person of my class. I tried to smile, but someone still asked me why I was grumpy. I mean what on earth!? How could they think that giving me an award for being quiet was something I'd love! I didn't keep the certificate!

I love your video. I can totally relate. I wish people would be more understanding and know how hurtful their comments and questions can be. I mean in face to face situations and online. I am glad you made this video. You are brave. I am disappointed with the people who wrote negative comments, though. You have no control over what they wrote.

Very true...i have gotten all of these comments all my life. I have come to realize that people who don't have social anxiety can really never understand what we go through. It's as simple as that. Even it you try to explain. But anyway great video.

When someone says any of the above I now respond with "I'm having conversations with myself" that really gets them wondering, and while it's sometimes true and they usually think I'm being ridiculous, so they leave me alone. Mission accomplished! :)

I've gotten all of them before except number 3. Number 2 is probably the worse, because I've never had an answer to it. If I knew why I wasn't talking, like properly knew, then I would be talking, you know? It actually makes my anxiety worse and makes me feel really down. Like you said, it's even more annoying when you actually make an effort, and then you feel like what's the point. I feel exactly the same about that. Thanks for posting this video.

The problem, I think, is that so few pple know about Social Anxiety, they don't even know it's a disorder. Like, they think we are shy and quiet by choice. So we get all these stupid comments like "Why don't you talk?", "Come on, speak your mind!" or even worse "Don't be shy".. yeah, like I can stop being shy just like that, out of the blue. It takes a lot of time and effort to overcome it. Mostly with the help of specialists. I'm 30 yrs old and I'm still not done with it. It's painful, hurts every single day and hinders your social life. Thanks for putting up this video, I hope it'll get pple to understand what it is to be social phobic.

I do the 'Sure bud' head nod with the stupid grin when people say things like that to me. (Stupid look for a stupid question/statement) The worst one though is when people try to put the spotlight on me to talk like I'm being ignored. Like my worst nightmare.

Agree w/ all of these. One I get ALL the time that I HATE: "Why don't you smile. Life can't be all that bad", "Are you a sad person? I see sadness in your eyes" "Smile, it won't kill you". I guess it tend to have a flat affect expression a lot when in social situations because of the anxiety, my brain is all over the place just trying to deal with the anxiety of being around others so I tend to either have a lack of expression, or inappropriate response expressions. You're really pretty btw!
