My conure loves to sit on top of the shower screen and enjoy the steam from the shower. I’ve been doing that daily since his pin feathers are still coming out and I can see that it is itchy and uncomfortable for him. The steam really helps calm him down and provides some relief. He sometimes bathes in his water bowl and when he does I take him out to a sunny spot on the balcony to dry off his feathers. It also allows me to help him with the feathers that are ready for preening. He’s such a floof that they’re easy to miss. Another reason to keep the water bowl clean!

Oh! and another thing I do is check his morning poop every day and clean it up LOL 😂 I feel relieved when it looks normal and knowing that he doesn’t have a blockage or some kind of infection. I watched your ACV video and use that protocol in his water a few days a month. So far so good ❤️

As far as training every day, I don’t train every day because my flock is special needs, and often not receptive to training. One of my birds has chronic avian gastric yeast, and while he has been treated for it, it’s chronic and hasn’t gone away. So, training him gets difficult because after every treat he eats, he has to regurgitate for like half an hour. He’s still eating his pellets and veggies fine and maintaining his weight, but he doesn’t like pellets or veggies as a treat and isn’t motivated to train for pellets and fresh vegetables. And my other bird is partially blind, and bites people a lot, so my parents are kinda scared of training her when I’m away at school. We tried to work on the biting, but because of her blindness, she gets scared of anything that comes near her and starts biting because of that fear. We did get her to bite a little more gently, so it doesn’t hurt anymore, but she does still like to bite people. We always do everything else on the list every day though, and I train both of them whenever I come home.

There will always be individual cases for sure! And for some animals, you don’t just have to train with treats! We’ve also had some fun consultations for blind birds and working through their challenges to become confident 😊

Although at first entry into the shower (so she gets more water time) my 5 year old Quaker female, Ivy, does love how she feels after a daily bath or shower. I offer her a bathing bowl but also provide her shower time in my shower. She is a plucker, but seems the bathing calms her down.

Bathing definitely calms a lot of birds down! And it’s great to offer a bath daily and they can let us know if they want to participate or not! 😀

@@BirdNerdSophie I also don’t think my girl has any skin issues, according to g to her vet. I think she is bored, doesn’t like to not see me (I’m retired. So if I leave the room, she refuses to come find me by flying. Only flys if spooked. She is my only bird, so no avian interaction there. She didn’t start over grooming until she was over 2 years old. It gets too hot to have her outside past 90 degrees in our hot Texas summers, unless I put her in the shade in her outdoor cage. She does like the sunroom, and she has never laid an egg as I don’t allow her pro,ots to be nesty. I think she adores me too much.

This was a great list. 💚 In addition to these I personally try to do a quick health check on my birds every day via a mindful observation during which I pay careful attention to their eyes, nostrils, feet and butt area. Just to make sure everything looks clean and healthy. This was I also learn what each individual really looks like and can notice changes more easily. 😊 I’m hoping to teach them to open their wings by request in the future to be able to see how their under the wing area looks like more easily too. Hope we’ll get there one day with my tiels! Btw! What is the wonderful toy around 4:55 that your cockatiel is playing with! Looks like a great foraging toy!

I enjoyed your video. I clean cages with a complete wipe down and new paper towels on bottom of cage daily. It is so much easier to do this then waiting and have poops every where. If I did not do this they eat their poop.

Our cockatiels absolutely loathe anything that's remotely wet or slightly squishy. We know even Harrisons Pellets aren't enough vitaminwise, so we're going to buy an extra bowl to just at least offer them the fresh fruit and veggies, but so far an entire year without luck and plenty on offer for them (coated in millet seeds even). Any tips? Besides not giving them pellets in the morning until noon?

Hi Sophie, I have quite a funny question for you! I drink summer fruits squash and one time my conure cheekily took a sip without me noticing and since then she has been obbsessed with trying to drink from my cups! Do you think it's ok for her to have a couple sips or should I avoid it all together? 🤔😂

Hi new cocktiel mom. My mom had an african grey so cockatiels use their feet to eat or no? I might need to chop my veggies smaller if not. They're young so i don't know if they're still learning.

@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you! tomorrow I will be doing a really deep clean. Just wanna say also i'm so sorry if I were asking really random questions recently which you might have not known because i have been going through a lot of things with my birds. when they started to smell I tried everything but then i started getting busy at school e.c.t and just did not have any time too much for them. so something that came in my mind was giving them to a rehoming centre forever because I was keep on thinking to myself that i'm not a good enough owner and they deserve a better life but I really did deep down know that they're happy with me. but i really did not wanna give them to a rehoming centre. so so sorry for asking you one to many silly questions the pressure can really get to me when it comes to the birds! 😅

Foraging and training could both be made a good source of exercise! I do flight training back and forth from the cage top as some of my bird’s exercise. Also, foraging that requires lots of motion such as foraging cups and trays are good for encouraging movement
