Thinking about getting a bird and wondering if parrots make good pets? Here are 7 things to consider before getting your first parrot! In this video, I'll go over birds as pets, why are one of the hardest pets to own. I'll talk about why parrots could pluck their feathers, why parrots bite, why they're not the easiest pets but if given lots of time and attention, proper diet, nutrition, and care, parrots make the most amazing companions you could ever ask for! I highly recommend watching Parrot Confidential, a documentary that shows what it is really like to own parrots and the reality behind what happens when parrots aren't wanted anymore.

I've had cats my whole life, and now I'm really interested in getting a bird. I've done a lot of research but I think I have more to check. I just fell in love with the idea of having a pet that is very interactive and small. Sometimes I think I shouldn't get a bird and other times I should. So I think I'll have to wait longer and see what happens

I've grown up with cats my entire life as well, so their attitudes are just second nature to me. When I got a prey animal as a pet for the first time it was some serious whiplash. I never realized how different it was having an animal who isn't predatory. It took some getting used to but now, I would literally throw myself in front of a giant hawk to protect my turtle baby!!

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience to me. I have a 5 month old Quaker parrot hen. Hopi has toilet trained herself! I noticed she would flap her wings periodically when she sat on my shoulder and felt she was trying to communicate something to me. I tried putting her in her cage when she would do it thinking she might be tired and she pooped straight away. The next time she flapped I put her in again and she pooped straight away again. I gave her a seed as a reward and she hasn't pooped on me since! Every time she flaps her wings I put her in her cage and she poops like clockwork. I am stoked! I haven't had a bird before but she seems extremely intelligent by any species standard... including human haha

I wouldn't trade my lovebird for anything, but he is the most challenging pet I've ever owned. I have owned basically every reptile, rodent and 'average' household pet and I have never had to devote so much time into an animal as I have my little baby. He is my whole world and I couldn't imagine a life without him in it.

This! We have two cats ( 1 kitten 1 adult) a king Shepherd (88Ib at 1 year old) , I had a cockatiel who passed away at 21 years , a green cheek who passed away at 10 years and currently have a jenday ( 4 years). I have had rabbits as well way back when, and fish: parrots are by far the most difficult because they just simply don’t care about what the human wants 🤣

Regarding noise: I chose Pionus parrots and African grays, because neither shrieks (naturally, anyway; but they CAN learn loud noises from other birds: we had a mockinbird that moved into the tree outside the bird room, and the gray learned all sorts of bird calls from the mockingbird. It was interesting to see them talking to each other in bird languages which weren't natural to either of them!) . Pionus are also usually more sedate, and will sit on my shoulder for many hours. Pionus can learn to talk, but have the stereotypical scratchy bird voice. Grays can duplicate just about any sound, and only need to hear something once in order to learn it. Giving them their cages near an outside window where they can talk to people passing by and other birds and animals has made them very socially active with the world. I can't speak for other bird owners; but mine seem to see their cage as their 'house', and spend about 90% of their time in or on their cage. I leave the cage doors open whenever I'm home. Oh, I also 'trained' my birds to think they can't chew furniture and trim, by having it all made of white oak in the first house we had. So to this day, 31 years later, they still don't know that they can chew up the plain pine wood furniture and trim in the house.

Great video!!! I would also add owning a parrot will change your home, for example: you can’t used most nonstick cookware or appliances, no more scented candles, air fresheners, and certain cleaning chemicals, and you always have to make sure to have doors/windows closed. But they are totally worth it!! We love our kiwi (sun)

Ive breed canaries and my mom uses non stick pans never had a problem also sometime we use air sprays still never had a problem maybe u have to burn the pan for the chemical stuff to come out and with the spray we dont spray near the bird area but it kindoff close to the room never had any issues

I can totally agree on the noisy part. When I had my yellow-sided conure he would always make noises before I went to sleep. He would usually stop after like ten minutes, but I think it was his way of letting me know he was there. I really miss him... He passed away over a week ago due to a freak accident. The room feels really empty without him... But, I have made a few changes to make sure what happened to him doesn't happen again, and I'm planning on getting another conure! I have all the toys, perches, and the large cage, so I think I could give another conure a good home. Your videos are awesome, though, keep being amazing my dude!

I've owned birds when I was a kid, my mom had a ringneck up until recently and I realised how much I missed having a bird. So, I've decided on getting one. I've talked to my moms birds breeder about my options. I knew I wanted something more than my childhood cockatiels, but a little less than my moms Indian ringneck. She suggested a green cheek conure and its definitely high on my list. I'll be gathering the items I need soon!

Hi! I'm a new sub, I love your content so far❤ I would like some advice if you please. I got a green cheek conure about a month ago and Akua (my birdo, she is 6 months now) likes to bite and try to destroy my glasses. Do your birds try to do that? She even flys and lands on my glasses as im wearing them just to truly and destroy them. And if you have any advice on how to make her stop trying to tear apart my glasses I would be very grateful. Thank you^^
@FlyingFids
@FlyingFids 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Irene, thank you so so much, I’m so glad you’re enjoying it so far! First off, congrats on being a green cheek owner, they are an absolute blast to have! ☺️ Akua is still very young which means it's THE perfect time to teach her that biting certain things is inappropriate! She’s also at an age where she’s going to be exploring things with her beak so she will bite anything that she finds intriguing, like glasses! When my birds were that age, they never actively flew towards my face to get at my glasses but they did, however, bite and perch on my glasses or bite the part that rests on my ears whenever they were on my shoulders. There are several different things you can try! I suggest taking her off of your glasses as soon as she flies onto them, place her down, give a stern “NO”, then turn your body away so you’re not facing her and kind of ignore her for a good 10 seconds and then interact with her again. That way, it’ll communicate to her that biting glasses=no attention and it might take a few tries or lots of tries for her to understand (be patient and consistent!) Another thing you can do if you haven’t already and before she even flies to your glasses, is to trick train her (so it doesn’t make her think “oh, if i attack her glasses, she’ll play with me!”) Trick training is great especially at a young age because it establishes a way to communicate that you can continue to build with Akua for years to come (highly recommend starting a training routine with her!) It’ll also get her brain juices flowing and tire her out before she could even think about going for your glasses. I’d also recommend giving her a variety of toys to play with so she can explore with her beak. Hope this helps! ❤️

Alot of people thinking that it normal for parrots to bond with 1 person which isnt true it not normal and its a must for you to make ur parrot get along with other people as in the wild parrot interact with other parrots plus it not healthy for a parrot to get to attached to a person as this leads to further problems

To be fair...the most of the "wild" behavior of most parrots still lines up well with living with poeple...i think it's fair to say they might as well be domestic at this point. I don't understand what kind of person could get such a beutiful,inquisitive animal and just leave it alone in its cage...whats the point of getting a parrot if your not going to play with and talk to it? When I was a kid my cockatiel sparky had the run of our house...where I went,he went...wed sit at the windowsill and watch thunder and rainstorms togather...and he'd say things like "Zzzap" and make noises like crackles and boom like thunder....i miss him so.

Hey, birds are meants to be flying over huge areas, not sit in a tiny cage in a appartment. Stop being such a egocentric, birds should not ever be a pet

I'm considering getting a parrot or two, currently I'm in school so I'm unsure if they will be unhappy because I won't be with them for 7 hours. Any feedback would be appricated

I've been looking into sun conures! I probably won't be able to get one currently due to budget, schedule and space issues (plus my family has a cat), but maybe in the future. It's always good to get a headstart on this stuff

Thank you so much for making this video~ My cousin recently bought a parrot, and they were hand reared so they were super sweet, friendly, and loved everyone even when we had only met them once. I May get one for christmas~ or my birthday (feb 14th) But until then i'll just count the days!
