I've been playing for two months and my church put me up on stage with the worship team after only 7 weeks of playing. ( Our drummer left a year ago and when they found out I was learning to play I guess they thought a new drummer was better than none at all). It's a small church and everyone is very supportive. I actually wasn't nervous. I've played guitar and sang on stage at church and for some reason the drums feel very natural to me. I love playing them more than my guitar. I'm obsessed. I'm doing ok as long as we keep things basic like quarter and 8th notes and basic fills. I'm looking forward to improving my technique and playing with the worship group really helps. My advice is just go for it. Of course it helps to say a little prayer first😊

I play the drums now for 4 years and am in a band since 9 months. We played the first little gig 3 months after I joined with just 5 songs. It felt so natural to be on stage and went on really well. Now the fourth gig is already waiting for us in about a month. You go there, prepare and concentrate, but also have fun to be fully responsible for the drum sound.

My first gig was a church service. Up to that point, I had only played along to songs on the radio (never with a band). I’ll never forget showing up, and the worship leader giving me a rundown of everything. He pointed to an electronic device and said, “there’s your mixer”. I had no idea what that was or what it did. Needless to say, I was prepared to play the music, and all the other outside things I had to learn just organically happened. Preparing for the set was the foundation.

My first gig was terrible, and I was frustrated, and quit for a couple years. But a month ago I played with a different band and was able to feel fun. And it was amazing :)

Great vid. Good concidence booster for me. You should make a video on simply how to jam for beginners too. Ive been learning to play songs then getting together with my friends and playing them. But when it comes to creating and playing random music with others, pretty lost. I cant be the only one

Confidence develops fully when mastery is accomplished - it’s the byproduct, not the prerequisite. You should be nervous if you didn’t do your homework. Translation: Confidence is directly proportionate to the amount of practice/play you do. Moral of the video: Do your homework and don’t pretend you have a skill you didn’t master. Important subject, thanks Stephen.

I have yet to play my first one. The closest I came to was a couple months ago when this singer/guitarrist hit me up on vampr with some demos his band had and asked if I was interested in joining and I chickened out of it because I thought I wasn't good enough (they were VERY good, specially the lead guitar and the vocals). I wasn't, but I should have taken it anyway.

i recently chickened out of an opportunity to play for a decent crowd with a cool band. people seem to think i'm really good. but honestly, i not, but i ok with that. i have a health condition that restricts my daily life. i use drumming as exercise and musical therapy. iv'e written some songs, and can play some songs i once thought were nigh impossible. i'm stuck in this position where i can't commit to a band because i know 110% for a fact my condition can & will flare up and floor me for weeks. rendering me useless as a reliable band member. So i duno what to do, well i do in some respects. i'm never gona stop playing the drums, until my body literaly falls apart. ✌

No first gig for me yet. I've only practiced my lessons and played along a little bit with some songs at home. I do know that if and when I play a gig, it will be very uncomfortable, but I'm pretty good at laughing at myself, so I'll get through it.

That’s approximately over 1,500 church services. You know, I never really understood the title Non-glamorous Drummer until I heard you’re a church drummer. Now, it makes more sense. It’s a double meaning, I guess. I know it’s non-glamorous because you teach the “nuts & bolts” of drumming, but also because it’s not about you seeking your own glory. You’re not focused on trying to promote some rock star image. Nice! 👍🏻

Have you jammed or rehearsed with the band? If not, do that before you gig

I am 63 and started from ground zero at 60. I have been playing one song a week with the Church Worship Team. Sad to say ,my very large Church is so clicky, the experienced musicians offer basically zero encouragement. The one or 2 folks that will say , hey that sounded great is so appreciated. Sad that the Christian environment is almost the same as the world. That's why I always tell folks, focus on Jesus because people will disappoint us. Don't use people's short comings as an excuse not to attend a Church that focuses on solid Biblical teaching. They are planning an official audition, so I am not sure how this old jock is supposed to interpret this artsy fartsy music world I stumbled into. I was never into music at all but I always enjoyed the drum parts.
