Rimshots are a critical drumming skill to master if you want to create a powerful rock groove that records well, sounds awesome, and pulls a huge sound out of your snare drum.

Great pointers. I’ve become very conscious of snare position when I’m setting up at a show. If it’s not set up correctly when you start, you have to wait until your break for the next set before you can readjust it. Not good. So your first pointer was key. As for my preference, not to be a politician, but both. Whatever music we cover, I want to try to honor the original music (drums) as much as I can. So it’s important to be able to play center hits and rim shots when called for. Yes people like to hear a band’s interpretation of a song. But when you’re playing it like the original, that’s really what they like. Honor the sound.

Great video, Stephen. I definitely love the way my snare sounds when I happen to pull off a nice rimshot. I have been playing for over 40 years and never really tried to play them properly or consistently. In the beginning, money was much more a concern, and I tried to get my sticks to last as long as possible. I think this was the main reason I developed the habit of playing the center of the snare only.

Great video on the proper technique of a rimshot. Because if you have proper technique, you will be able to switch from snare to snare and play a decent rimshot regardless of the height of the snare, the quality of the snare, the size of the snare, or the tuning of the snare. Never in my years have I heard someone discuss choking down or choking up on a stick. I'm sure I do it naturally but it is nice to understand why I'm doing it now. Thank you

Everybody's got to be comfortable with snare height, but man, your snare looks low!

Yah, geometry is everything, and incredibly specific to the individual setup.at one point as I was learning, using my thigh as the reference point for rimshots felt good because it lent consistency that I didn’t have yet. However, one limb being referenced to another, at any time, would seem to be contraindicated for the ultimate goal of 4 limb independence, and it seems like a limiting crutch.

I'm sorry, but if you want to play rimshots more easily, I don't understand why you wouldn't just raise your snare a bit to avoid interference from the leg rather than have to move the sticks round to the middle of the drum. That just sounds like a weird, totally unnecessary solution to me as opposed to just raising the snare. No brainer to me.

Rimshots Yay or Nay? It's all relative. As you said, It depends on What ur playing, Where ur playng, etc. RE: Sticks - I use the relatively unheard of (secret) "3A" [available at Sweetwater] 😎 to give me more than the Standard Procedure 5A/B, without going full bore to the 2B. Q? - Do U know if the "RTOM" will fit over the SN practice pad on the DW Practice KIT? The Practice Kit works fairly well for General purposes, but does Nothing for Rimshots. 😕 🤷‍♂️ TYVM for this Vid Stephen. (I did a d/l for the measure/Level app) 👍

I appreciate a good rimshot sound, but none of the music I play really requires it. So, thankfully, I can ignore it, for now at least.

My problem is I have a e-drum set and it triggers a rim shot even when I don't don't hit the rim and it's not that kind of rim shot it's more like the the kind when you only hit the rim and not the skin too. It will only trigger one or the other not both too. Can't afford a better set.
