The worst part is when people accuse you of being bossy when you try to keep everyone on schedule, then give you an extremely low score on a peer assessment because you were "uncooperative" when in reality you've been checking on everyone to see if they need help and making sure to ask everyone for their opinions but one person doesn't have any opinions to share!

Yeah, I can agree on that, I was in a group like that for a VERY important project in high school. My group was uncooperative never delivered their work and purposefully slowed me down. When I went to the teacher about it, she told me to try to wait for a few days to see if things would change... A week later I went to her and told her things were even worse than before, they started to be rude and aggressive. She told me to just ’suck it up and deal with it’. I ended up doing all the work if I did it on my I would have finished a week earlier and had a week to learn all the text, this way I didn't have any time. They knew the text perfectly and I didn't know anything. We got a bad grade. Then the teacher asked us to anonymously evaluate the others teamwork and we agreed that we would give everyone 90%. The next day the teacher read out the teamwork scores. They ended up having 97% and I got 30%. Yes, 30% after I did ALL the work and after our agreement. I almost failed the subject that year, because the project was 50% of our final grade...

Exactly. For any student, whether you're in elementary, middle, high school/university, or any school or age, it's hard to step out of your comfort zone and work with people who you might have not been able to communicate with the most. You can't know what they're thinking, but they probably feel the same way as you about working in a group. People just need to teach lazy workers a lesson about purpose, not revenge or drama. Students need to speak with a teacher or adult.

The sad part is when they don't care and teachers aren't on board with that. I once had the same 4 team members in 3 different labs. In all of them, one missed report meant invalidating all other grades for that subject, and I learnt it the hard way when I was on my way to scoring 90% the first bimonthly period when I had to do all the work for three different projects and my teacher said it wasn't valid because all my teammates had to be 'credited for their work', even if I had to do most of it myself. Worst part was that I had already approached them from the second they were put in my team because I KNEW they didn't work in class. 'Suck it up, you'll have to when you work'. I said I wouldn't work under someone who would pay 4 people for the work a single member was doing, but they ignored meCost me my overall GPA period after period, nearly failing all 3 labs and a burn out that made me want to kill myself.

@@mgmt97 Yeah I feel you. Last semester I had a group project on programming and it was supposed to be composed of 7 members. One of them was a cadet and had little time. Two of them were new to this and knew second to nothing of the subject but still helped me out. Rest of them were total douchebags who wouldn't even bother to show up. It would've been fine but there was a viva after each phase and the catch was that if other team members didn't know anything then the teacher would deduct the group leaders' points for not keeping everyone else in phase. Long story short there were three phases and I had to explain the programming and the structure of the bot to them and even then they would just show up whenever the hell they wanted. They demanded explanations multiple times just so they would get a passing grade. Even though this subject was worth 4 credits, the time I had to dedicate almost tripled and got me from getting around 3.4-3.6 to 2.9.

my problem is that even taking initiative doesnt solve much. I automatically step up to take on leadership because I know how to get shit done and how to do it well, but i generally dont trust other people. Just because group members are responsive and everyone is working at a good pace doesnt mean they are being successful in fulfilling their task. I cant count how many times I've had to drastically edit someone else's contribution because they are incompetent, didnt follow instructions, made a ton of horrendous gramatical errors, etc. In the end they get the same credit as me even though I do all the work and editing and they dont even realize how poorly they would have done if I wasn't there working behind the scenes. THAT is why i hate group projects.
@kallistoindrani5689
@kallistoindrani5689 6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be better to just sit down with them and edit it together? They can hardly know what they are doing wrong if you just fix it for them. And some people will take advantage of your personality too, work badly cause they know you will take the lead and do all the work. Why would they work if you just do it for them anyway? It's hard but you should just let them do their part and you do yours, that way it will definitly show the difference in quality.

I can't speak for everyone who teaches at colleges and universities, but all the faculty I've talked to about this topic understand this problem exists (mostly because we all had group projects in college in which we were the ones that had to do all the work!). I would suggest students to be even more proactive. The DAY the assignment is given, specifically ask the professor what the process is for dealing with students who do not contribute. I know at least two college instructors who specifically give their groups the ability to fire members that aren't pulling their weight, and the expelled students then have to apply to other groups to participate. Just like the real world, you get fired if you don't do your job.

When group project members don't communicate well, it's because they don't want to. Not because you somehow didn't establish an ideal method of communication. They want to avoid doing as much work as possible. It should not be anyone else's responsibility to coerce them to contribute to the project. The fact they don't actively try to establish communication to be on the same page as everyone else in the group is enough evidence that they want to be a deadweight. I've had this happen to me too many times. I've done everything to establish modes of communication and made myself available, constantly making sure if they had any questions. All of my efforts amounted to nothing, because in reality they simply didn't want to put in the work. I never bossed anyone around, nor was I disrespectful. I've given my fellow team members clear goals and deadlines, yet that didn't matter. Every single step I took in the project I'd update my team members on to make sure they understood and were on the same page. I've done everything in that regard. I can't really rely on emailing the professor, since he explicitly stated that it was like this in the real world and we basically had to deal with this sort of stuff. I genuinely hope my team members don't graduate or don't find jobs. Because they'll be a burden on everyone else which is something I wouldn't wish upon anyone to have to deal with.

Regarding the video coming next week - while I thought it would be a relatively simple video (a sub-topic of music should be easier to cover than music itself, right?) I ended up in neuroscience territory that's pretty hard for me to understand, and eventually had about 30 tabs open in my browser with studies, conflicting opinions, etc. So I decided to push it back a week in order to make sure my understanding was more solid, and to make the video NOT be 20 minutes long :P

Would you like any help with the neurological aspect? Like someone to ask?
@Thomasfrank
@Thomasfrank 8 жыл бұрын
Potentially. I've got a call with a neuroscientist today actually. One of my main areas of curiosity is the consensus on the relationship between neural oscillations and cognitive functions. From what I've been reading, it seems certain frequency bands of neural oscillations are associated with different types of cognitive activity, e.g. delta waves arise from deep sleep, beta/gamma waves are associated with mental attentiveness/wakefulness. And from looking at studies using EEG data, it seems that these oscillations (brainwaves) can be changed through external stimuli like music. From there, it's claimed that auditory stimuli using precise frequencies can entrain brainwaves to a desired matching frequency band, thus encouraging changes in cognitive performance - better focus, better sleep, etc. This is where we get into binaural beats, isochronic tones. There are some studies showing positive results for this hypothesis, but others showing no results. And it seems the sample sizes are usually small. And some skeptics have written that brainwave frequencies arise from cognitive states - not the other way around. That doesn't mean the theory is false, but to me it seems like more data is needed. Some binaural beats/iso-tones sellers claim CRAZY benefits, which I can dismiss pretty easily. What I'm interested in is if these types of technologies can simply help you focus more effectively. I'm interested in this right now because I discovered a tool called Brain.fm a couple months ago, and personally I've had good results (typically better than normal study music) with it. I've been using it for a little over two months, so I believe I can rule out placebo effect for myself (though I'm not knowlegeable on the studied time ranges of placebo effects - maybe they're long-term? And if so, does it matter?) But my experience is anecdotal, so I'd like to be able to more accurately present the state of the science behind it before just coming out and saying, "Hey, this works for me."

In my college we write a research paper every three months, and obviously you have to team up. I've been using Google Drive and Google Docs lately and let me to tell you it works like magic. We don't have to email the parts and gather them, everybody knows when someone is or isn't working so it pushes those lazy partners to work. Another thing I've found useful is to show a little bit of leadership and try to speak to every member of the team, and instead of chunking the thing, actually work as a team in every single piece of your paper, listen out suggestions and opinions from every member (and actually take them seriously).

Honestly, I have RARELY heard of that working. The professor might deal with this person in a different way. Don't assume that your grades will reflect the extra work you are doing and they are not. Summing it all up, it was a tragedy. And he got away with a higher grade than mine because the professor thought he did better on the interview (for God's sake). He didn't even read the code, he just glanced at it on the interview and was lucky to understand it enough to explain. Had I separated from him, I could've performed better (even more if I started alone from the get-go). I flunked and he passed. Oh well.

True, usually, my teachers want everyone to do part of the work. So if you tell them that you did all of the work, they’ll just mark it down for lack of communication. So, if you have to deal with lazy group members, and you basically did all of the work, just keep it that way. Because the work will benefit the one who does it because they learned from it

I don't usually share my stories, but now I'm really mad. Ever since I started highschool I've been in the same class with my best friends, so whenever we had a group project we assumed we would do it together. On every single project I had to be the one who decides what to do, how to do it, to make sure there weren't any mistakes, to wait until the very same day of the project to get all parts together, and then be criticised that I am bossy or simply ignored. So this year, maybe not the best choice, I decided not to do anything that wasn't mine. And tomorrow we have to hand it in, and it's a complete mess, and my friends are freaking out, but I don't care anymore. I did my part right and what will happen we shall see. I just lost all my motivation of working with them.

I had to singlehandedly make the paper, but now our teacher insists on us defending it as a group. But now I'm going to try out this communicate and delegate method and see what happens! ❤

Also really annoying when you all get the same grade for the project and some people are pulling down the grade by trying to finish the work quickly with the least effort they can instead of trying to produce good work! Ugh...It's difficult because you have a personal relationship with people on your course, so you can't just tell them that they should be doing more, but at the end of the day, their lack of work is going to affect my grade

In elementary I always want to be a the group leader knowing it would increase my grade... And it turned out pretty well... But in Grade 7 or let's say Highschool where it all hit hard... I always have Lazy Team Member and have no one to rely on... And here is what I do... Tips: *Create A Group Chat, And Ask someone if they want to volunteer... To the group project, make sure they're practicing and so does you, Make sure to be polite as always since your teacher/Your judgemental classmate is the one who will sometime give the grade... make sure to grab a Piece of Paper then write a important detail about you've learned, make sure to Ask/Tell what your member suppose to do (you're the leader right??) And make sure you guys are not Being Noisy... Keep Talking, Turning To Each Other When Presenting Your Report/Project, That would just decrease you're Score :) Also Do Not be afraid or embarrassed, If you do bad at the project... Then do better next time ? But If no one want to do or participate in the Group Project Then do not include them in your work, and tell to your teacher that they do not do anything, And Make sure to always remember what You've Learned, But the actual most important thing to get a great grade on a group project is focusing about Every detail, Like The Title/What You and You're Member Suppose To D (And Many More). *This is where I'm going to end it... You actually do not need all of this, all you need is to get used to be as a GROUP leader, and Gain Experience :)*

I'm in a group project right now and one of them arrogantly said they had it all handled and didn't let us participate. When we got to see what she did, it was amazing by how pretentious and long it was while somehow it answered none of the professor's requirements. So, I had to rewrite it and then my other partner got finished and when I opened it.....so many errors that I had to fix :D

Awesome advice! Asana is amazing, I'm also an editor and my publisher uses Asana. One thing I'd suggest is in regards group oral presentations, make sure to meet and practice how long each persons part in the presentation is going to be. This will help make sure all parts fit in the time given for the presentation as a whole and also helps ease nerves if individuals experience anxiety with public speaking.

I once had a group project consisting of three group members. Every time we sat down to work on the project one of the members always was up to something else. The day before presentation me and the other group member decided to let him go. I told him that he did not have to come into school for presentation. He was really mad but did not say anything because he knew he had fucked up.

In some group projects I've been involved with we've had the opportunity to do a peer assessment of our fellow group members once we've handed our work in by scoring people on their contribution to the group. It's been a great way to indicate which group members have been the least helpful, hence leading to them getting an overall lower mark. I know that some people have abused this peer assessment system though, with them being the laziest ones in the group but scoring themselves the highest out of everyone else. Of course, if the consensus is that one person has been lazy yet they give themselves a high peer assessment mark, the professor is going to notice that something strange is going on and likely just negate the high score that the lazy person has given themselves.

Since you make videos for mostly college students, I really would like you to make one about your views on stuff like partying or smoking weed and stuff like that, and how it affects ones productivity,till what extent is it fine, or even your experience with it. Stuff like how to balance it out, or should one completely just refrain from it.

I also agree with you, never count on others. I think next time I will do my own project fully and on the side contribute to the group but if they do not do anything I will deliver my own version and let the group fail.

Exactly! I was mismatched so terribly this semester. My fellow group members are complete morons by choice. They simply don't care. One of my members is outright incompetent at everything. The prick is so bad at doing our assignments properly, I suspect he does it on purpose to avoid any higher expectations to do more work. He wastes our time so much, it's questionable how he made it to senior year. I'd put all my money on the fact he has leeched on other people to get by.

So I am not the lazy one but I am the one who gets to pick a subject last and there is almost nothing left to do. I am practically the useless one since don’t do much. I also hate that I often end up writing the same thing as another member in my group because they won’t tell me what they are working on. Then there is another person in the group who refuses to do anything or skips class. I always found that there was at least one person who did nothing, or if they did do something they do a half assed job of it and the rest of us have to re edit again. Hi Thomas I need your advice. I'm in a group assignment for a huge project but one of the group members I couldn't get along with (toxic person, I wrote her an open, neutral letter and she took it the wrong way), told another group member about the fight we are in. Adding the 3rd member of our group who had a habit of raising her voice every time she doesn't agree with my input, this is all very overwhelming for me. Those three kind of refuse to help me and really don't seem to like me. I thought the value they put in the project was quite good and better than mine so I offered to do what I'm good at rewriting grammer and spell checking. They said "well you can keep rewriting, you can also write a book about it, it doesn't have to be perfect". I can't handle that attitude. I just want to get along and deliver a great project but they want to do average work and involve me as little as possible. How can I deal with this? I'm starting to doubt myself. I kind of want to ask what it is they don't like about me, or ask if we can communicate more openly but I fear that will work against me.

I've created an entire step by step document for my group to follow. Deadlines, expectations, you name it. They feigned ignorance. I was better off without them. I wasted my time trying to keep them from becoming deadweight, but that's exactly why they're deadweight. The fact I have to invest my time and effort into making them useful when they clearly aren't interested is precisely what makes them deadweight. They simply didn't care as long as they got a passing grade through someone else's effort. I hope my group members don't graduate. No one should have to deal with them in the real world. The real world already has enough of that bullshit. I wouldn't even trust them with cleaning my floors.

Thomas, I have a question. Last year i was in a situation were I had to do a group project with a person who was also wanted to get things done. The problem with this was that, they attempted to control everything, whilst blaming me for doing the same thing. I think every interaction is meaningful because they embody all of our intersections. Specifically in academia were minority voices are not heard, and there is often erasure via systematic racism, I got more frustrated because of the larger implications- their privilege voices controlling mine. What made it even more frustrating was the topic was specifically applied to a minority group, and the challenges they face. Though, your channel doesn't discuss racial implications ( from what I know), I specifically want to know how you handle working with another achiever? I think for that particular situation it was all about using our strengths to work towards a common goal, but did involve silencing my own critics for the sake of group hegemony, which was irritating.

This is one of my favorite cultural differences I've noticed between American and Portuguese students. Around there you guys get very annoyed about doing all the work for someone else. Here people are just fine with it. If they could choose between taking full credit and someone taking none, or help out the person, 9 times out of 10 they'd help someone out, even if they did nothing, so long as they were respectful and honest with you. Like, if I can do a Programming project in 5 days, and I have a group member who'd need 5 weeks and lots of coaching to do his part, I'll let him do his part of the project if he wants to but if he doesn't it's fine for me to do his work. I don't feel like it's ''unfair'' he get's the same grade as me without doing the work since no one sees grades as a competition. There's a scale from 1 to 20 and you're fighting with yourself to get as close to 20 as you can. If more people get closer to 20? That's even better as you're helping other people. And we don't feel like they'll get something they wouldn't deserve since they still need to get through the rest of the classes. And if someone manages to get through everything without doing any work? Well, that's a very valuable skill in itself. I don't know, there's very little competition, at least in my university, and everyone's goal is to make sure everyone else has as good a grade as it's possible. I'm reading this comments about how people hate doing all the work and then someone gets the same credit yet around here I see students coaching their partners on the project defense so they get a similar grade when they didn't do as much of the work. Probably a product of a smaller number of students so you're likely to know your group mates really well and then they're your friends and you just want them to succeed and accept their flaws.

I always feel like the people who do that are going in knowing the one or few people who really care about their grade will step up and do it so they can chill and ignore it. The problem is in real life and in a job that would never work. I know people who sucked at their job and did nothing so yeah they got let go. Group projects are about being able to work on a goal with other people which is key to work for any company or most jobs.
