My experience is that you can get work without a degree, but it is only going to help you get interviews and later promotions if you do have a degree. I have always been about learning things because i am interested in them rather than attaining certifications. My observation though is that people with certifications get taken seriously from the outset. My last SQL job, i practically begged my boss to let me write a couple of key functions to be used in queries. I ended up staying with that company for two years writing SQL code and optimising other peoples queries.

Can I say that depends on the context of a job a data scientist does not necessarily require skills in predictive modeling? I've heard many saying that a data scientist MUST require skills in predictive modeling in order to be qualified a 'true' data scientist. No I dont, just a bachelors and tons of training, courses and hands on experience. If im being honest, Im perfectly ok at where im at because I work on a lot of personal projects in my free time and the plan is to have one of those take off and leave the corporate world at some point. In the meantime, Im at a decent level and pay without too many responsibilities that allow me to have tons of free time to work on my own stuff. Honestly I do about 10 hours of actual work a week, the other 30 is meetings and random corporate culture stuff.
