I just had my first few EMT shifts this week! This is my advice and what I struggled with most: - Giving a full report to the nurse during transfer of care was the most unexpected thing I struggled with. You basically state the name/gender and all relevant information about the patient, but that usually requires flipping through the patient care notes frantically. Try to mentally checklist all the things you want to say in the report - Don't take rudeness from nurses/medics personally. If they're having a bad day, it gets taken out on the EMTs even if you're not at fault - Highlighting the environmental awareness, look around not just for scene safety, but for clues on how the patient is living (are there drugs/empty alcohol bottles, cockroaches, etc) - As part of the pre-call routine, try to come up with the situation specific questions you will need to ask. EMT school taught a pretty limited and rigid line of questioning, when in reality you usually need to ask many more questions to get a full picture of what happened. Like if someone fainted, did they hit their head? Lose consciousness? What did they feel before and after fainting? Did they do anything out of the ordinary that day? Etc etc - Try to do palpating assessments (like abdominal exams) and get blood pressure before the ambulance starts moving to the hospital. You can do the rest/ask the chart questions while the rig is moving, but bp and palp are hard to do with all the bumps

I’m an Italian EMT-B and we use tablets on each emergency call to note everything (patient information, the event and outcome) which we then hand a printed copy to the ER when we get there

You are spot on. You covered the key elements I was taught at EMT school. I've been an EMT for nine months and the points you covered apply every run. I would add, hang around in the hospital room after transfer of care to the RN and listen/watch what they do, note the questions they ask the patient. I alway try to hang for a few minutes to hear the nurse and doctor interact with the patient. Also, as an EMT you will need to brief up the RN or doc on the patient's complaint and condition. Best to have your stuff together. Asking for help is at the forefront of decision making. EMT is BLS and better to ask early than have a patient go south and you are suddenly in over your skill sets. Thanks. I'm sending your link to our training officer.

Hey Evan, Great Video! Thank you so much. Have you ever, or how often have you been in a situation on scene, where you're just completely stuck, and you have no idea what to do?

I have watched a majority of your videos and they truly did help me learn many of the concepts! I was wondering though how an EMT could become knowledgeable about the procedures and medications Paramedics do and use?

@@ayoonamir6413 I would say watching some of his videos helped me a lot…I also have trouble with memorization, but what helped me was watching videos any way I could. Whether it be his videos or just random videos on topics I struggled with. The test is randomized so it will be different for everyone, so I can’t tell you what will be on the test exactly. One thing I can tell you tho is to make sure you read every question carefully. Pay attention to vitals and skin color. Hope this helps! Good luck!
