I live in Michigan, towards Ypsilanti. I ride all year around (Even in the snow). My motorcycle is my only source of transportation. Some tips I want to add/support. - If you think you are going to hit ice. Do not lean, brake, or give gas. Just coast straight up until you are out of the area. (Especially useful across bridges) - Ride in the tracks of other cars. There is likely to be less ice there. - As Cycle said, take the back roads. If you have a dual sport, the dirt roads can be the most fun. - Have crash guards, helps protect the plastic if you go down on ice or salt. ALSO good gear. - TAKE YOUR TIME. No rush, most people in cars should understand. I love your videos Cycle, keep them up!

I ride year-round as well and I absolutely enjoy cold-weather riding. I live in Des Moines and I ride down to 20F without heated gear and have no problems with cold. I do have very warm gloves and jacket, balaclava, and thermal inderlayer pants. My commute is about 30 minutes each way; I ride it every day unless there’s snow on the roads.

Left my house this morning at 36 degrees on my Sportster, I also ride year round. I never put my bike away for winter. I'm 55 & I'm not a fair weather rider like most guys. I don't even have a windshield, just dress properly & you can ride year round. If you love doing something, then do it no matter what the weather is.

Cold requires warm gear which equals more protection, feeling of safety, and visibility. I can't stand full gear on a hot day but I don't like the feeling of insecurity of being under dressed for a wreck so colder riding tends to make rides a little easier and less tense

the coldest I have ever rode in is 23ºf. Wish I had heated Gloves then. It was 55º when I had left for work, and started snowing which the Weather channel was not calling for." SURPRISE" got home safely

Thanks for the tips. One year I went out too early in the season, rodes seem clear but one, sharp 80 degree corner on a favorite road had ice. I was on a BMW R1200C and started to slide during the turn. I straightened in up, rode up the embankment and back down to the road without wrecking. I shook for ten minutes afterwards. Scary as hell!

I commuted for over 40 years on motorcycles. I have heated gloves, heated vests, with or without heated collar. That’s the best. Heated grips… those Enduro nylon jackets do not stop the wind. Nothing stops the wind like leather, but leather is not warm. You have to have a larger leather jacket that you can put layers and electric vest under for winter commuting. Buy a pair of motorcycle boots one or two sizes larger so you can put layers of socks on I got caught at work five times over the years with surprise snow fall. One time I had to ride home in 5 inches of snow. It was OK. I was on my Honda CB 400 F that day. I live in Pittsburgh and there’s a lot of hills. That makes it interesting. But during those surprised snowstorms I got caught at work in, there was no melting of snow overnight and then having it get covered by snow which makes it very slippery. I just rode home in the crunchy snow which was not so bad. I do/did ride trail bikes for decades sometimes in snow, so it was nothing new to me never buy a motorcycle with ABS brakes if you think you might want to ride in the winter. If you hit snow or ice with a motorcycle that has ABS brakes, you will have no brakes..I don’t think, I know ABS brakes on motorcycles is very dangerous. I had experience with ABS brakes not working at all on my BMW a K 1200 LT. 900 pound motorcycle on a downhill gravel back road. I touched the brakes going downhill, the computer saw wheel slippage, I had no brakes at all front or rear I had a Moto Guzzi Norge/2007, for 14 years.. it had ABS brakes that could be turned off at the push of a button four times when you get onto gravel, wet grass in a camping ground, snow or ice… ABS and traction control is for idiots in cars. I actually crashed my motorcycle coming home from work one day were they over salted the road. The streets were dry, but there was about 50 pounds of salt where the cars had not crushed it up and blew it away. And I hit that with both wheels, and I went down. So you must watch out for the salt.. I do not ride my motorcycles once they start salting the roads. It just eats up the aluminum parts of the motorcycle that are not coated to protect them from salt to keep your face shield from fogging up, I wore the rubber part of an asbestos dust mask. It’s a very flexible rubber portion that’s designed to fit against your face. I put tire patches over the Hole in the front where the filter plugged in, but I left the hole for the exhaust of my breath at the bottom opened. I put that on my face and put my helmet on, my full face helmet keeps it in place. No fogging . this is a tip I learned from formula 1 car drivers. Get shampoo straight out of the bottle, and smear it on the inside of your face mask of your helmet. If you add a little water you can get it to smooth out into a clear sheet that will not distort your vision. This will not fog.. to this day I always carry a small 1 ounce plastic bottle of shampoo in my tank bag, or saddlebag. Forthree reasons- I can use it to do a cleanup after doing a roadside repair like. plugging a tire. I can also use the bottle of shampoo to wash my hair in my whole head on a hot day at the side of the road where there could be water available such as in a park where they have Fossetts for filling jugs or sometimes here in Pennsylvania they will have pipes coming right out of a hillside where you can fill your gallon jugs of water with fresh uncontaminated spring water. That is very refreshing on a hot day to takeoff your helmet, and shampoo your hair and wash your head with shampoo- and of course the third reason I carry a shampoo bottle is, if I ever get caught in cold weather and my shield starts to fog, I can smear shampoo and a little water to smooth it out on the inside of my face shield to prevent fogging.. If you can keep your torso of your body warm, your body will not start to shut down the blood flow to your hands and feet to preserve heat to your internal organs which is what it does when your body starts to lose heat. It makes your hands and feet cold first.. A taller windscreen and even a faring to protect your hands from the wind will help.. on an 80° day, at 60 miles an hour, your body is subjected to a windchill of 55° I like the heated grips because you don’t need thick gloves. As a matter of fact, the thinner the glove, the more heat you get through the Groves into your hands. While you were riding in cold weather, keep your hands on the grips and keep your fingers together.. I glue weather I have kept from shortening leather jeans on my clutch and brake levers. If you commute, and are working the clutch & brake levers in cold temps,Those levers if they’re not covered with something like leather, they suck the heat right out of your fingers. Cover your levers even if you have to use tape. They sell lever covers called skins I think.. I think they are made out of some kind of rubber. I just use leather because I’ve been doing that for decades on all my motorcycles. I am on my 108th motorcycle right now here in October 2021.. I too hate riding in temperatures above 85°. Summer can be miserable. That angry red ball in the sky, insects plastering your face shield and windshield, I wear all the gear all the time so it’s usually hot when the temperature goes above 75 to me at stop signs & redlights..But spring and fall are dangerous in their own way. I have impacted two deer while riding.. commuting at 7 o’clock in the morning on my Honda Pacific coast at 35 miles an hour. The deer took off my front fender and the right side of my faring. I did not go down. my first deer impact was on my BMW K 1200 LT. The sun has just gone down in May. I hit that deer right in the rib cage with my headlight area of my faring at 70 miles an hour. $5500 damage. I coasted to a stop in the darkness, then I got excited. I did not go down..I don’t ride at night anymore

There are mainly two tings that keep me from riding in the winter. Road salt eating away at my bike and rock hard tires because of the rubber compound. I can't be bothered to change to winter tires just for a month or two, so the bike goes into the shed where I tinker with it during the cold months. Everything else there are solutions for. Cheers from Denmark!

In addition to heated gear (or as a cheaper alternative) one can try the three layer principle too. It works great for me in Sweden when I ride during the winter. A tight wool shirt nearest the skin covered by a wool/polyester jacket/hoodie and finally a water proof motorcycle jacket. With this I can ride in near freezing temperatures and stay nice and warm.

When I got my first motorcycle I gave no thought to not writing it in the winter time but 32° in Florida is about as cold as it would get in Southwest Florida in February. It's not like I'm dealing with 10 foot snow drifts and Five Below Zero. It introduced me to the exhilarating Rush of riding a motorcycle in the brisk cold air. I love to see the exhaust puffing smoke into the air in the winter time another sign that the bike was alive.

Be careful of roads that are pretreated...it's very slippery! They're predicting some snow tomorrow and apparently some towns pretreat their roads. I was riding along in a straight line accelerating away from a light, admittedly smashing the throttle, and all of a sudden the rear tire loses traction and slides a little but luckily it fixed itself as I instantly let off the throttle. I then realized what those streaks I had been seeing on the road were...pretreatment. I pulled over and checked the road surface and it was as slick as oil. So I took it easy the rest of the way until the next town, where the roads were untreated. Lesson learned.

Yeah, I wanted to see that, too. With all the decision making CC has been doing for his next bike, I thought maybe he simply forgot to upload it. This will be my third winter riding. At 18 degrees my clutch cable froze on me. Had to pull over for a few minutes to thaw. Had to keep working the clutch to stop it from freezing again. So now I don’t ride if the temp is below 25. Good info on the gloves. I’ll click the link.

I agree with every single tip you mentioned but when it comes to number 5, when it starts snowing I (personally) wouldnt recommend using low traffic roads. Yeah its definitely gonna be less safe regarding other vehicles around you but when it snows the road is close to freezing point so first the snow will melt and slowly turn into ice at some point. Tires warm up the street so depending on how bad the situation is I'll actually try to get into areas with more traffic. You gotta be aware of your surroundings tho. If you see someone acting a little shady on the road, get out. Either speed up, brake or go a different direction. Im a winter guy just like you. Riding all year long Ride safe out there!

If you're taking a "warming back up" break. Put your gloves on the exhaust. (if it's not Very hot). If you don't have heated gloves it will give you a little extra heat. I can't ride in the winter/late fall/early spring 'cuz it's -20 degrees Celsius or below here. That's the same temperature as your deep freezer.

When I lived in Idaho, I would stud my bike tires and ride in ice and snow. I would also wear snowmobile gear. Snowmobile gloves are the warmest and cheapest. The only problem I ever really had in riding in cold conditions was dot approved helmets are so cold. But what I did was buy a bigger helmet and wear a benie inside my helmet. Worked great. It only really got bad to ride when it got below 0F, because it got really hard to start my bike.

Is there snow there? Snowy weather is unpleasant, but not by the snow, because of the salt they lay on the road, spoils the bike, you leave and then you have to wash the bike with cold water all the time.

I know what you mean about riding in the winter. My current streak of riding to work will hit 34 months in December. Good tips about winter riding. I don't do the heated gear thing, but with heated grips and the fairly big windscreen on the FJR, I don't really need it, as the wind's already pretty well blocked. I do wear thermal under my pants once it's close to freezing, but other than that, a fleece under my mesh jacket does me fine.

I also keep my motorcycle insured throughout the year ( located in southern British Columbia). If the conditions are right I ride as often as I can. We have winters that can get occasionally get pretty severe, but there are other winters that it hardly snows at all and temperatures hover above the freezing level. Gotta watch for black ice though...plus road temperatures and tire temperatures. Haven't sprung for any heated gear yet, but I just dress accordingly and generally I'm fine. I ride a 2002 CBR 600 F4i. Thanks CycleCruza, I enjoy tour videos! (PS: having a hard timing guessing what your new bike is...whatever it is, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.)

Tip number 0, get some winter tyres. Nothing will F up your day like a set of Pirelli hockey pucks for tyres. Get some Heidenau SnowTeks. Even if the roads are clear and dry the much softer compound has much better grip even when it's still 10C.

end of the day use whatever gearing you feel most in comfortable to control the bike but generally its a good idea to opt for the higher option so if you would normally take a roundabout ( not sure if you have them over there lol) or bend in say 2nd do it in 3rd. ANother tip use your engine braking more.
