Hello. I am a certified human resources professional (PHR, SHRM-CP) in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virgina) area. I am a a HR Manager at a CPA firm in DC. It is imperative that when looking for a new career or job that you tailor your brand to the company's brand in which you are applying. If your natural hair/hairstyle is part of your brand, which it is, you want to make sure the company's brand and culture mesh well with yours. As Ms. Freeman mentioned, professional appearance is imperative. Some industries are more conservative than others. For example: I am a naturalista that rocks a TWA. My TWA is acceptable in my workplace, however, I know and understand that I cannot rock a TWA with decorative lines and drastic color. That would not be acceptable in my workplace. It is also worthy to note that just because human resources and/or your manager does not comment on your hair, that it is going unnoticed, good or bad. My Managing Partner complimented me on my haircut after having cut it into a TWA from a longer on top tapered/undercut style. I have received comments from applicants when they meet me, "wow this must be a good place to work with you as the HR Manager wearing your hair natural". I have also been asked by managers to speak with a few female employees who reported to work with long weaves or when one Asian woman cam to work looking like Storm from the movies the X Men. I handled this matters with tact and respect, but these are very delicate conversations to have. I also like to wear big hoop earrings, but I save my larger hoops for the weekends because I know this is not acceptable for my workplace. In short, as Ms. Freeman stated, which I believe was her most important tip is "know the company's culture". Blessings.

The title of this video is misleading! None of her comments, though useful, relate to natural hair! I thought she was going to talk about ‘how’ to wear your hair.

Good point. take a peek at my new title. I used natural hair because of my core audience, but I see what you mean.

BlakIzBeautyful thank you for amending. I think a lot naturals (myself included) will be interested in that discussion.

You're welcome, while I have you, when you say "how to wear your hair" do you feel there are unprofessional natural styles?

BlakIzBeautyful I’m based in Zürich and there are no black girls in my building. The other black ladies I’ve met here all have weaves or wear wigs. My hair is longer now than in my photo, and I’m still learning which products work best. Now I mostly do twist outs and they work well. By midweek, I pull it up and wear it that way because it’s at that in between stage - after day 2 it’s too ‘wild’ for the office.

I think these are really great careers tips for everyone in general but I don't quite understand the link to having natural hair? I thought perhaps her tips would be more geared to how we can be accepted as naturals/how to wear our hair in professional contexts. I will shortly be starting a job in an investment house. I wore my full afro to interview and my hair didn't seem to be an issue (though I am in the UK so whilst we still have hair discrimination, it is not as poignant as it is in the US). Still I am interested in how I can wear my hair with confidence and combat any negativity that may arise in the corporate world from having natural hair. Very good overall career tips but please let me know if I've missed something here :S

Thank you for your feedback love, Ive updated the title. I used natural hair because of my target audience but I see the point you're making. Take a peek at the new title. Im going to use your suggestions in an upcoming video. THANK YOU!

Great career tips but not specific to ladies with natural hair as you stated. Also, the buzzing noise to like and subscribe is not helpful and it makes me not want to continue watching if it will keep popping up.

agreed. it was annoying, especially when it was increasing in volume.

I’ve interviewed for jobs with natural hair & with a flat iron do. I notice how I am received by the interviewer and peep the work culture.

I read the comments and I know you made amendments to the title, but maybe can you post a video about styles that look more unprofessional vs. styles that are more accepting. I'm about to cut my hair into a tapered style on Friday and I'm very interested in this topic. Thank you!

@BlakIzBeautyful6 жыл бұрын
haha girl she and I talked about that in our full interview. And the honest answer from her was, she is her own boss. Bloop!

So she is not in HR any more So she would not recommend that "do" for us natural girls in corp. America. I try to wear my hair in twist out and low buns
