I respect your integrity and decision not to become a "sister lock guru." I see sister locks becoming a sort of second wave of natural hair. As many of us have been natural for 5+ years now, we've found that it is so time consuming and type 4 hair is prone to breakage with constant manipulation.

The day I spend 2K on my hair is the day I'm going to tell my bestie to take my checkbook from me LOL. Its gorgeous but Nah I don't see it being the next wave at those prices. :) I think a lot of women will do like I did after year 2... just embrace what God gave them as it grows out of their head and let the heavy, time consuming manipulation go. I'm 9 years in now and my 4C hair is long and healthy with just a weekly wash and conditioner. No pre-poo and all of that stuff. I usually don't comb or touch it during the week as I have it in goddess braids or twists with just my natural hair which will last a week or two if I'm really busy. But having said all of that the style is really beautiful and I can see people wanting it for the beauty, but the cost and the fact its basically forever will slow their roll so to speak.

@@talesia these locs are not new, it was popular in the late 70's early 80's. The difference is that it was renamed and the price is to separate blacks based on social class and socio economic income

Sorry just to clarify, locs aren't African. I'm African and it's definitely not popular in our culture. It has negative spiritual implications. I believe it originated from India but it was adopted by the islanders in the Caribbean. Very far from Africa.

Expensive yes, but $1325/53= $25/hr. Sounds reasonable to me especially if people get multiple crochet installs, weaves, etc. Looks great, Soror!

I’m so happy. I’ve been really thinking about getting sisterlocs these last few weeks. I’ve been obsessively pinning on Pinterest and looking up info on it. Pretty much for all the same reasons as you. I naturally gravitated towards protective styles because I love the low maintenance and I don’t have a lot of patience for complex styling or the money to buy a bunch of products. So my whole routine just became very simple. I thought about traditional locs but just like you, I was afraid of the permanence. I’ve recently acquired a habit of shaving my head completely every so often as a result of liking big changes to refresh myself every now and again. I love really long “Marley twists” but they’re not really style-able. So I’m going to be bald for a while and get it out of my system and then go for the sisterlocs when I’m ready for the commitment. Seeing this video was perfect timing! Yours look so good on you and I’m happy to see you! Looking beautiful as always! & thank you for sharing your experience with us. I completely understand where your coming from about not wanting to be the ambassador and just enjoying your own journey with them. I hope it continues to go well!❤️❤️❤️

I never comment but your hair is beautiful! I've been thinking about locking my hair because of the same reasons you locked yours. I've decided to get a tapered cut for now. When I can afford sister locks I will definitely get them. The Army has allowed locks and I think sister locks would be the best option for me in the future. Also your skin is so smooth and buttery. Love it!

I completely understand and respect your position, Jenell! I also appreciate your talking about the difference between styling traditional locs and styling Sisterlocks. My locs were relatively "thin" but they weren't anywhere near as flexible as I would have needed them to be if I wanted to wear any style other than a ponytail. The one time I successfully curled them, the curls lasted all of a day. That's why, if I EVER go back to locs, I'm probably going to get Sisterlocks. I'm also glad other commenters did the math and acknowledged that you probably got your money's worth and then some. I now feel better about my recent Hair Rules purchase, lol. It's been a long time since I've spent $$ on a single product line but if it gives me what I want and allows me to clean out my product graveyard, it'll be worth it. It already sounds like your Sisterlocks are paying for themselves in recovered time and energy. Good luck!

Yes! I LOVE my Sisterlocks and will keep them as long as I live. This is the best alternative for Black women to wear their hair! I've had mine for 13 years now. In all that time my hair has been very strong and healthier than it's ever been, and I lost 5 locks, that's all. i kept them and sewed them back in over time. My consultant taught me how to retighten my own hair and it's been very inexpensive for me to keep them looking nice and neat. It's a long steel-grey mane and I feel my hair is the best expression of my spirit and consciousness. Mine cost $550 to install. This was in 2005 in the Midwest and took 2 days to put in. Yes, the reality is that they cost $ to put in, but that expense is offset in my opinion by savings in continued maintenance like weaves and other methods. You can spend $300 on an expert weave you'd have to do again in 8-10 weeks. same as relaxers, every 6-8 weeks, there is the constant drip-drip-drip of money. I can wear my hair in any way I want. I can roll them for a fluffy wavy style, straight, braided, put up, any way. Yes, there is maintenance. So is everything else you put effort in. Interview different consultants. They do differ. Good luck and happy locking!

Love your hair! 😍 I got small/medium comb coils last year to start locs. I knew I’d never keep them so I wore them for a year just to see how my hair would lock up. I took 13 days (could’ve finished in 8 days) to comb them out myself w/water, Aussie moist conditioner & a metal rat tail comb. Loved the growth I got in that time. I’m looking forward to your hairs progression overtime.

Girl. It’s like you went in my brain and made a video. I’m only 3 years Natural and a tiny KZbinr but I’m tired. I’m tired of tutorials and buying tons of products. I have already purged a lot and now only have 3 brands but I’m still tired of even that. I have a bald spot in the top and that’s the only thing that kept me from traditional locs. I have a girlfriend that has sister locs and she loves them. I might have to check it out. I did loc extensions years ago and took them out. I might have to revisit that as well. So many choices. Congratulations!!!!

I love your hair! I want to sister loc mine in the next 5-6 months. I’m starting to do my research on local locticians and the maintenance of locs. I’ve been natural for over 10 years and I can’t wait to take the leap to locs!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I love your hair!!! I'm planning on locing my hair at the end of the year with traditional locs. However, at one point in time I was in love with the Sister Locs and now I am once again. Cool fact I have green ombre hair now.

She does Instagram videos now. Her hair had gotten so long, full and beautiful. She just does a live video with her loctician every time she gets her hair done. She answers all the questions there.

It's my understanding that sisterlocks are a trademarked process which entails a specific parting method and tighting tool. I have been interlocked for 6.5 years now and my loctician used a crochet needle to begin and maintain my locs.... which are thinner that palm rolled but larger than sisterlocks. Wishing you the best on your journey and welcome to the loc'ed life!

Love your locs😍 I'm glad you did your thing. The amount you paid is very fair, if you calculate, it's 25 $ an hour and she really did an awesome job, considering the length you have. I wish you all the best for your journey✌

Smart woman. There comes a time in your life, when you must cut the chord. Your Sister Locks are beautiful and you have made a decision for yourself. The dangers in following EVERY SINGLE MOVE of an influencer, is when the Influencer decides to do something different. Individuality is essential, during this, season, as well as the next. The faux locks were also beautiful on you. ❤️ In closing, never apologize, or show remorse, when it comes to prioritizing your happiness! You are an amazingly bright young woman!!! I salute you! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 ~Peace and Grace

I’ve been following since before I big chopped over 4 years ago! You’ve been one of my favs! I have been thinking about sister locs for months and when I saw on IG that you were getting them, I was super excited!! They are beautiful! I loved your faux locs and I had a feeling one day you were going to loc! And when you decided on sister loc vs traditional locs I was like yes! I’m still on the fence about getting them...not quite sure I’m ready to commit, but I’m looking forward to watching your journey!

When I saw the thumbnail I thought you had minitwists in your hair. I've done minitwist that small and it took me three to six hours to put them in and I loved the freedom of having them in. I would take them out every two weeks to wash my hair and put them back in and my hair loved it!!! I did this for about a year. I now have four children(my oldest is eleven, my youngest will be two in January), I'm a teacher, going to graduate school, and taking music lessons. I'm now considering clip ins because I have no time for my hair. I even considered chopping it off to help alleviate stress, but eventually I'll be in the in between lengths stage which is a lot of work, so clip ins it is!!! You have to do what's best for you like others must do what's best for them. Live your life!!!!

I would have to disagree with the statement where you said that if a person charges $500 then they must not be “certified”. My consultant is a licensed cosmetologist, sisterlock consultant, and a trichologist; and I was charged $500 for 8 inches of hair. I think it just depends on the area you live in or where you choose to go

Well she definitely deserves more. I wouldn’t charge anyone $500 for 8 inches of hair with the time it takes. I’d rather work at McDonalds than spend days doing sister locks for $500.

Great video. I have to say that you are the third ole skool natural KZbinr I have followed for the past 8 years that has gotten locs!!! You look great!! They are really flattering on you. I agree with you the money you save over time when you invest in sister locs is spot on however I don’t have the commitment to keep them forever nor the patience of sitting 75 hours total (my hair is 17 inches long. I’m the type of person who like to change her hair every month or so. With that said, sister locs or locs for that matter are not for me at this point of my life but I can’t wait to see how your locs will mature over time as you go toward your next natural hair journey
