Have you done any album art for anyone? And how would you go about contracting a deal with a music artist? I have people asking me to do cover art for them all the time. But they want to get away with paying me a one time payment, of like $40. Half the time I tell them I want royalties. A small percentage of the prophet of each album sold with my art on it. Most of the time, these people really don't appreciate the work they are asking for. Any advice would be appreciated.

Next tip for artists is to make sure and not get carried away with a job. Sometimes you get so excited about a possible job that you go above and beyond and try to do way more than requested of you and create all these complex and intricate designs that you're proud of only to then have the client not like it or fall through on approving the project. Be sure to find the balance between offering a quality service and being adequately compensated for you expertise
@NormanDurkee
@NormanDurkee 4 жыл бұрын
This, this so much. I wish someone explained this to me when I was younger and starting out. As a passionate artist it is so easy to fall into this cycle. I would wast so much time with a "potential client", and when they showed just the smallest bit of interest, I would rush to the desk and draft up a handful of different designs. Without even talking to them first about what they even wanted or ever getting any real "your hired" from them. Just the excitement of a possible client takes over and your off. Needless to say, those clients would just never email back after that overwhelming initial email lol. But were all young once, and these are mistakes we all make. You learn and grow from it.

Yes! And that goes for emails.. Keep it very simple and to the point! These people are busy like you are!

Another tip: The contract should include a clause that the mural can not be intentional destroyed or covered up without notifying you/the artist prior to removing/painting over the work. If the person/company commissioning the work doesn't own the building/wall they need have permission from the owner and hopefully get them to agree/sign the contract that they will contact the artist to repair/freshen the art work and that they will not remove/coverup or destroy the work before the artist has a chance to document/photograph the work or a way to remove it (i.e. if the mural was painted on detachable panels). Never sign away your copyrights or Intellectual Property Rights for original/concept art!!! Unless the client is willing to pay double or triple the price depending on who it is and what they're going to do with images of your work. Also include a line that you/the artist will receive name credit for any images of the mural (whether partial or full) appear in print or digitally.
@JacyndaMinor
@JacyndaMinor Жыл бұрын
This is a big one, I had a mural covered up when a new business moved into a building and it was heartbreaking. The original mural had the name of the business included in it, so I sorta see why they did it, but it didn’t make it any less of a bummer (especially since I _really_ didn’t want to include the business name in the first place, but they really insisted) I also think it just looks bad to have your work covered. I really like the added part about including credit in any images shared in print or online, I never would’ve thought of that and it’s MAJOR. The whole point of a contract is to create a written and enforceable doc that lays out all the shit you assume/hope will happen anyway. I really need to let my lawyer buddy make me one. Do you bring it to them on paper, and stand there and wait for them to sign it? Or do you send it over and let them get it back to you later? And then where do you store it? I hope these aren’t too legallish of questions, I see it more of a logistics thing. I never know how to go about it, like bring it up and get it done and get it back and all that. So I’ve skipped it- and as you can guess, this has cost me *thousands* of dollars over the years.

@@randomshit65 Yeah, I agree with you. Once they've paid me, they own it. They can do whatever they want with it. It's a bit egotistical to say they can't remove it or paint over it. They can do whatever they want. They've paid me and I'm able to pay my bills. When did artists and musicians start acting like they were so worthy of being worshipped and idolized. I supposed this mindset has been going on for a very very long time. We provide a service. No, they can't sell prints of my work like they own it that way, but there's common sense and then there's an egotistical mindset.

ohhhhh yes - thanks for the video, I can underline everything you said. Especially doing photomontages decreases a loot of problems - BUT NEVERRRR NEVERRR let the client alone with your print and the finished mural... Dunno why, but they start to compare, like they want to find a "mistake"... Destroy the print immediately when you are nearly done. And never let the client compare... this seems to be some psychological thing... good video - in case of pricing it is a little bit more complicated, but having a fixed price is always better than getting money per hour - especially if the client is staring at you while the whole process.... looking forward to more videos like this!
@clmclachlan

That bit about the concept and the finished product - there can always be a clause in the contract to cover a disclaimer that concept is CONCEPT and doesn't represent a warranty that the final product will correspond precisely to it. You never know what might come between your concept and the finished art - substrate, bad lighting, paint availability and quality (if you're buying in a foreign location) anything can screw with the perception of the final product.

Im an illustrator and multi media artist (I do small murals on the side) and all of these tips are sooooo true! I had my last nightmare client and they taught me (I taught me afterward) so much about protecting myself and making sure we email eeeevvvveeerrryyything! If they can not communicate via email or messaging and thing We are going to just verbally talk about what they want... I run in the other direction. Thats been about 2 years ago and I haven't had that or any other major issues with clients since then! Just a bunch of angelic clients! Also keeping your ownership. I have illustrated over 200 books and unfortunately did not know how valuable I was. I no longer offer "Ghost" illustration after I saw my illustrations on a best selling book with another person as illustrator made me sick to my stomach! Yuck! You have as new Sub right here!

Awesome video man, thank you! :) Concept art point is a really good one. I've made fast (bad) concept art before assuming that the client will be able to jump the difference from that to my usual quality, like its just a sketch for subject/composition, but its not necessarily the case and people can react weirdly. Much better to spend a good time producing good work even at concept level like you do. Your point in general to not assume anything and to communicate clearly is gold for this and for communication in life in general.

It may not sound necessary or you may think there's no way that particular client would ever do you wrong but trust me it happens. Always protect your downside on every job, especially with deposits. ALWAYS make sure to collect them. There's nothing worse than putting in work for a client and drafting sketches etc only to have them fall through.
