Best mixing tip I've encountered: turn your monitor volume really really low, and listen for whatever element sticks out. Turn that element down until it doesn't stick out anymore. Turn your volume back up and it'll still sound good!

Sounds cool! I dunno if that's something to ALWAYS do tho... Sometimes you want an element of your mix to stick out on purpose. For example the vocals or a lead synth.

depends on what that element is. it may be a resonant peak or other components to the sound that levels are fine but one specific tone building up in the mix.
