Disclaimer: Your experience does not reflect every experience everywhere! I would not be where I am without my degrees, and having additional degrees entitles me to higher pay than those without them. You may not need a degree for your field, but a lot of fields do require or expect higher education and they will ask you what you majored in. The trick is in how you APPLY your education, not where or how you get it.

Facts. If you didn't learn how to apply your education during your years in college, you might not have been paying close enough attention. As much as I love what I learned from my classes as well, I think on the job market I got way more out of the fact that I was working in some very cool jobs at my uni while I was studying. Look at the student jobs your college/uni is providing! Apply to them! Even if it means an extra year of study, you've got a year of extra skills and new people and references, and of course that dinero.

Real talk though, I’ve always had a passion for learning new languages and travel. Ever since I was a young girl, I knew that I wanted to travel the world and learn about different cultures. I’m Latina and I want to be more fluent in Spanish and I’ve always loved French songs, French culture, food etc. when I was in high school, I decided to learn French. I looked up KZbin videos and stumbled upon the “How To Sound Cooler in French” vid. Damon and Jo inspire me to do the things I’ve always wanted to do. I’m going to college in a week and I have no idea what I want to major in. I’m going to study French and Spanish, but I need to be exposed to new things in order to understand what I want my future to look like. I still have a long way to go, but thank you Damon and Jo :,)

The beauty of college, speaking of it in the states just because that’s where I’m from, your two first years are literally your g.e’s which expose you to different things. Then once your two years are over you have to choose your major.
@shigotoj76295 жыл бұрын
i would say to consider taking a gap year and be an au pair in France for a year (you can also take French classes, and you’ll be walking away with more knowledge of French than your first semester of learning French from a textbook) learn about the education system there consider doing your undergrad there as it is affordable and then travel because you’ll be in Europe. Just do research on all of this and you’ll see what I mean. Hopefully this bit of info helps.

1. College in Manhattan doesn't change anything. If they went to CUNY they wouldn't be spending 50k per semester but a square 3k or 10k(out of state). Private colleges come for your coins 2. College degrees only matter for highly specialized jobs like working at the hospital/law firm/bank etc. Great job getting your accounting degree hope you never change your mind on a career path bc that would suck. 3. Honestly if im mad about the price im paying for college and how i dont feel satisfied, some random club isn't gonna make it better. I like dominoes but im not gonna pay 50k to be in dominoes club. if i was good at sports i would have a scholarship anyways. 4. I think its becoming more possible for people to look pass their fear and become world travelrs bc of social media and maybe you could've made some good connections in your degree worthy job to do all that. It takes some true determination to be unsatisfied with something that's sucking up so much of your time, money and mental health for 4+ yrs. Then go on to work a possibly unsatisfying job to settle down and ignore all the things that make you happy or excited about life. Some people aren't in the position to chase their dreams but college shouldn't put them in debt for the rest of their lives just to have a stable life and an ok job.
@maryrosedipiro73635 жыл бұрын
So true. If everyone dropped out of college to travel, who would fly the planes? Who would build the airports? Who would organize taxes? Like these jobs are necessary and I hate how everyone looks down upon them. I want to be an architect, which also requires a masters. Doesn’t mean I’m a dead-end idiot with no motivation... just means I need to learn the physics before I go building shit.

First of all, I love that someone else is talking about this...I feel like my friends & I talk about this topic of the broken US education system constantly! That is like one of the quickest ways for me to get heated. I literally ruined my financial life by going to an expensive prestigious university, thinking that I had to prove my worth. (Obviously now I know better) Because instead of being a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist working in that field; I am a RDN now working as a Fine Dining Server & making more money than I would if I stuck in that entry-level position in the medical field. I am so much happier now compared to being burnt out in a clinic. The only thing that could make me happier was if I didn't have these soul crushing student loans for my six year mistake.

I agree with what you say. I joined the military right out of high school. I was in 12 years. A lot of military jobs don't transfer easily to the civilian jobs market. I have my degree B/S in IT system security because I hate working with people would rather work on a network or computer system. Right now I'm looking to start my own business also. Yeah, a lot going on. It never stops either we just keep evoving over time. for what we need and want to do as a career. I agree on no one has ever asked if I have a degree.

Just wanted to say that in every country college is a business choice because even if it's usually way cheaper than the US, it takes a lot of time and time IS money! I feel a lot of people don't consider when they really should
@LovingSoul615 жыл бұрын
I think the key is not to go to college "just because". It's a business investment just like paying for anything else. Only go if you have a clear vision of the career you want and then research which degrees, certifications and licenses will put support that vision. Along with internships, mentorships and job placement or immediate business plan for beginning your own practice/ entrepreneurship. And don't discount the value of trade schools. You definitely need to do college to become a doctor, lawyer, teacher, therapist. Most curriculum here does not offer experiential hands on on the floor applicable skills just concepts so it really depends on your goals and finding the right programs to suit your needs and access to resources/community. Definitely don't go just because you feel like you're supposed to. If so, then do something that has multiple applications like general biomedical sciences or psychology or language. This way you can easily become a specialist through a masters or certificate program or at least have the foundational knowledge to do something with on your own. Never something specific unless it suits your ultimate career goals and you have a solid idea of where you could work or how to work for yourself with it after graduating. Otherwise, there's really no point. Especially now that there are free and cheaper options for furthering your education.

I'm a film editor and I got journalism - I'm working with documentaries right now so I guess it's kinda right? Also I did go to film school (which a lot people say "don't do it"), but it was great to get to know other students and teachers, to be honest I learned more talking to the people there than in some classes - I feel like it was a good choice from me since I was in a new country and didn't know anybody (also needed to study to get a work permit), but a lot of people in my classes already knew people in the industry and for them I think it could've been a better idea to just go and do it. You don't need a degree, specially on arts, so think long and hard before doing it!

I love y'all dude I was at college for a year doing all my general classes and I took off and never went back now I'm 21 thriving, and actually happy learning all the things that interest me. United states colleges/universities in general are pretty bad, they really do not teach you life application skills I used google and KZbin more in my life to learn things from how to change a electrical breaker, learning photoshop and how to file my taxes myself instead of paying a CPA who gouges money from you only to not do the work properly.

It’s also crazy how you can have the same degree as someone else but they could have received so much more help from tutors etc. My tutors were awful and unfriendly. I did French and Spanish and now I live in Spain and I have learned so much more about language and I did at uní despite doing Erasmus. My Erasmus year is the only reason I don’t regret my degree, plus the debt is not the same in the UK. I think I was also stuck in a time before a lot of info was online. Also no one will tell you you have to sit at your computer ready to sign up to certain classes to only find out they are full so you end up doing classes you don’t like.

I graduated with a sociology degree and didn’t know what I wanted to do with it till my last class “Women and Sex in Film” which, yea, was a film class but had so many sociological themes in it that I got excited about going everyday. My advice: take as many electives as possible.

Associate of Science in Digital Media, Bachelors of Science in Digital Arts and Design, Masters in Education with a focus on ELL. I am a professor in South Korea right now, I use my degrees to travel to different countries to teach for a bit while I upgrade my skills in art and programming to work freelance when the payments start being more than my normal paycheck. Then I would work part-time for the heck of it and continue doing my freelancing. I also make video games for fun and for my students.

It really depends on what you are going to school for. There’s specific careers that just require it. There’s no way around it. I always like to boil it down to asking: will you get back what you invested? For instance, to become a teacher school is necessary, but it also does not pay an abundance amount. Going to a city school is a better option then a private or state school.

Thank you for this. I'm going into 10th grade in a week in another new school and I'm totally having a mental breakdown. Why does the education system suck so much? Your points are very valid, however there is one thing that going to College has over trying to make it solo. It's the connections. The connections to current students who might help you out in the future (like Damon and Jo), connections to alumni who are trying to make it big in the real world, and connections to companies that would only give opportunities to those with a degree. It's true that entrepeneurship does not require a degree to pursue, but the likelihood of success for that and many other professions increases with the valuable connections you make in and from College. Rather than the classes themselves being useful in future, it's the entirety of the college ecosystem that makes the experience worth it. That being said I'm Canadian and I nearly choked to death when I heard you say $200,000 for a college degree. Isn't that robbery!!?

Studied some sort of design, tech, building apps degree. Did a semester (minor) in Child & Media, wanted to go abroad, did an extra minor in Germany in Visual Communication. Participated at design conferences and visited educational conferences. Took Spanish in the city and Educational Science at a different uni while finishing my thesis on gifted children in pre school. Thought children how to code and build games on school holidays in my last year, graduated, worked to save money, went on a 45 day interrail trip and finished with a Spanish course in Spain. Applied for uni in the UK and got accepted (while interrailing :D). So now I'm packing my stuff for a masters in Psychology of Education and I can't fucking wait. I should've graduated when I was 20, but I'm forever grateful that I kind of did whatever I wanted to and got a degree at 22. (Did it with trail and error, you guys and a year at the psychologist :p, let's not glorify it). Btw also grateful that tuition in The Netherlands is €2000 a year and a student loan has 0%-0.0% intrest. I always have a plan, but it changes monthly. Right now I've experienced so much I've envisioned 3 dream jobs and I'm planning on living in Belgium, Germany and Spain for a year after my master to practice one of those jobs. Studying for me isn't just about the knowledge. I love being around creative people and teachers that understand my vision and help me get there. I got to experience all kinds of stuff, met so many cool people. Even though I'm kind of throwing my bachelors away, the whole experience helped me to get where I am today and I wouldn't change it for anything.

Biggest takeaway from getting a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology (reaaaaaalllly not “lucrative” in the job market rn) is its what you do with that knowledge. I took my B.A. in Anthropology, and combined with my other passions, I am now working at a public health nonprofit providing technical assistance to Indigenous communities in creating healthy living policies for cancer prevention. Did I ever expect that to happen? Literally never. But here we are! Also, I wouldn’t fully discredit humanities and arts degrees. Liberal arts learning is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY IN THIS CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE. right before I graduated one of my friends who was finishing up a degree in Biomedical Engineering was freaking out because she spent 4 years in school learning about engineering n science and whatever and knew literally nothing about human-centric issues. Regardless if you truly enjoy your degree or field or whatever, college has you learning things in the most unexpected places

After three years and graduating from the academy of art as a sculptor I can really relate to what you are saying, but the thing is, here in my country (even though the education here sucks) or in europe, the fact that you can learn something new without paying a big amount of money, encourage you to get in college and improve your skills in whatever field you want. Before getting to study in the academy of art I failed the admission test to get to the academy of music! and I felt bad, but then I completed my path in music on my own, and I ended up, after three years, improving my self in both fine arts and music which is way better than going to study music, and not being even able to understand what the word fine art stands for. So from my non-american perspective, I think that purchasing your dreams requires both studying in college and on your own, having some internships so that you can learn as many skills that can help you in the field that you choose. And of course, being a self taught or a graduated student does not change the fact that you are able to do whatever you want and fulfill your dream. Thank you DamonandJo for this funny topic to discuss HAHAHA xD

There is a misconception about Stanford university, that Stanford is expensive af. It actually is, but Stanford provides a generous financial aid program that helps students pay their tuition depending on their need. Household income below than $65k a year or even less than $125k can apply for scholarships and grants that help them pay their tuition. 75% of students graduate debt free (debt aprox $16k). So it is easier to pay for your Stanford tuition but it is not easy to get in. Depending on your needs and income, the school grants you a determine amount of money, so some students might have to pay some money out of pocket. I met many Stanford students who told me this, and the reason why Stanford can afford paying for their students tuition is because most of the Alumni donate a buttload of money to the school to keep this program going on. So if you apply to Stanford and get it, get that degree bitch. Learn about your resources.

it’s really interesting hearing your opinions of college in the US, because from what i’ve heard, university here in the UK is REALLLLLLY different from everything you’ve mentioned!!!! i’ve learned so much from this video about college experiences around the world cos i wrongly assumed they would all be similar.... and they’re really not, i suppose!!! especially what you were saying about education becoming a for-profit organisation - here in the UK, we have a fixed rate for tuition fees and these never change, regardless of which uni you go to!! 😊
