In this video, top coach Ferenc Horvath gives 5 tips to help you improve your backhand flick.
The backhand flick is a very important shot in table tennis. It allows you to attack short backspin serves and gain the advantage in the early part of a rally.
Ferenc explains in detail the technique needed to generate more speed and spin when executing the backhand flick. There is lots of footage of Ferenc demonstrating the shot. And at the end of the video there is footage of me attempting to return Ferenc's backhand flick.

My top favorite shot that makes me feel great when executed successfully is the backhand flick when returning a serve. I usually win 95% of the points.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. At the amateur level, the flick doesn't have to be spectacular. Just contact the ball early, with a positive flick and the opponent is already under pressure.

Tom this is one of your best videos, thank u so much. The backhand flick is a shot I love and I'm getting better and better at it with practise. One of the shots I struggle with is the backhand loop and I'm wondering if the back hand flick could be used as an alternative to that shot ie used against longer balls as well as short ones. What do you think?
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 3 жыл бұрын
Potentially, yes. You can keep the bat angle the same, the type of contact the same and the upwards movement the same. But you will probably need to start with your bat a bit lower and finish a bit higher. If it helps you to attack the long backspin balls - and it consistently works - then why not?

This is a very good video. A general feeling I have when watching tutorials is that the instructors can be too skilled - you only see perfectly played shots. This can make it harder for novice and intermediate players as it can be hard to know what can go more or less wrong. Tom is good, but not as smooth as Ferenc - it would be interesting to see Tom return heavy or light backspin serves from Ferenc using backhand flicks.

Tom, can you please tell us how to cure Table Tennis elbow which is resulted from lots of handsy actions
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 3 жыл бұрын
Table tennis elbow (or tennis elbow) can take many months to heal. You usually have to stop playing for a while to allow the tendons or muscles to repair. My best advice is go and see a physio, so you can be assessed properly. Good luck.
@RobertoCostas
@RobertoCostas 2 жыл бұрын
@@TomLodziak I got tennis elbow from an only shot made with a very bad backhand tecnhique (which I don't use anymore and I advice my students not to use). It comes and goes from time to time. But I never stop playing. When I feel it's coming, I train and coach with my left hand, wich is very useful for a coach for many reasons.

Chinese coaches teach that the racket should be moved with the fingers, not the wrist. Thumb backhand. The movement is faster and more controllable.
@BulkHealth
@BulkHealth 3 жыл бұрын
The technique in this video is very outdated imo, very old Europe style. There are far better technique's including the one you mention. The pivot point is mid way between elbow and wrist, wrist is added to this. But, you also need the torso to coil like a spring etc.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 3 жыл бұрын
As always, there are multiple ways of playing the same shot. Try out different methods and see which works best for you.
@BulkHealth
@BulkHealth 3 жыл бұрын
@@TomLodziak. There are multiple versions of the same 'named' shot. The theory is the same but if the execution has a completely different pivot point and weight transfer technique, it is a quite different 'shot'. Nuanced I know, but important to distinguish between.
