I think it's actually better if they're not perfect. I made a set a while ago and I planed and sanded them to within a few hundreds of a mm and the game was too easy. When they all fit perfectly and are sanded smooth, the tower is just too stable and with a bit of patience we could get the tower all the way to a fish bone structure with just the middle pieces of each level remaining. The solution was to take about half the blocks and take just a little off the top with coarse sandpaper.

You’re absolutely right. The variations in the blocks are necessary for removing them. Thanks for sharing your tip!

Thanks for the question. I use Deft Spray Lacquer Satin finish. You can use other spray on clear coats but Deft is my absolute favorite. You can find a link in the video description. I hope this helps!

7.5” Length and 2.5” Wide. No need to worry about the height as it is just the actual height of the 2x4.

We just tried it and it was too short they didn’t line up/ it should be 10.5 not 7.5
@TheDadCave
@TheDadCave 3 ай бұрын
10.5 inches would work if you left the width of the 2x4 the same. I cut the width of the 2x4’s to 2.5 inches which equals the 7.5 inch length.

What kind of clear coat do you recommend?? I’m having trouble with mine sticking together /:
@TheDadCave
@TheDadCave 4 ай бұрын
I used a water based polyurethane and did two coats. I wouldn’t recommend using an oil based polyurethane because the finish tends to have friction even after it cures. Have you put a clear coat on the blocks and if so what kind?

@@TheDadCave I put a modge podge acrylic spray, but I bought another one that is a clear topcoat
@TheDadCave
@TheDadCave 4 ай бұрын
@sydneymcdonald-yk4lw I have seen these before but never used them. The more I used the set I made, the smoother the blocks became. The blocks may be sticking initially but it is possible after continued use the modge podge clear coat you’re using will smooth out and not be sticking as much. Let me know if you have any other questions.

What kind of case to you store them in?
@TheDadCave
@TheDadCave Жыл бұрын
Just the basic wood crate you can pick up from any of your big box or craft stores. I guess I could make my own but sometimes the time savings makes up for the added cost, especially seeing as how I batch these out. But also, it is a great idea for anyone is only making this for their own use and doesn’t want to make one.

third dimension?

I used a 2x4, cut it to length and ripped it to the final width. I am assuming you are referring to the height of the board which would 1 1/2 inches. The standard height of the 2x4.

do you have any clever solutions for the trimmings from the 2x4s?
@TheDadCave

I use the leftover end cuts of the 2x4 to raise pieces off projects off the bench surface for spraying and clear coating.

Use 2x3's.... No trimming needed.

That is an option as well. I thought about doing that however I prefer cutting them out of 2x4’s so I get a clean edge that I can round over. Thanks for the comment!
