I had a tick bite in 2009. I contracted ehrlickiosis (sp?) and it just about killed me. Thought I had the flu but an old doctor in a walk in clinic told my wife to take me to the ER immediately. Probably saved my life. Woke up 5 days later in the intensive care unit. Organs were shutting down. 17 people in TN got that disease that year. 7 died. I fully recovered. Was very lucky. I use permethrin on shoes and boots now. Screw environmentalists who say that’s not the right thing to do….talk to me after you’ve almost died from a tick bite…..

When did you find out and how did you come go the conclusion you needed to be tested? I'm curious because my doctor wont test for it because I never got the rash from the bits. I was covered in ticks two years ago and my health has been going downhill for about the same time.
@solo_official-ready3 жыл бұрын
How did you get tested? Sorry you have to deal with this.
@CarolAnneChapman3 жыл бұрын
@@shawn2789 I'm sad you're going through a rough time. I didn't get tested. I went to my doctor. Fortunately, my doctor dealt with my symptoms, which were that I was shaking, chilled, dry heaving, and extremely itchy inside and outside on my skin. I felt as if I was dying and almost went to the ER. Since the symptoms started within one hour of my noticing the tick bite, he assumed it had something to do with the tick. Also, once I pulled off the tiny tick (only about the size of a pepper grain, what they call a "seed tick"), I gradually began to feel better, but never back to how I'd felt before the bite. Because I felt better, I didn't go to the ER. My doctor told me I should have gone to the ER immediately. I wish I had, because, evidently, if you get the medicine within, I think, 24 hours or maybe 48 hours, of the tick bite, you won't get permanently sick at all. As it was, I didn't see him until 10 days later. By then I had the virus in my system. Fortunately, a number of weeks of the antibiotic got me feeling almost back to my old self. My son tells me that a friend of his who works outdoors automatically goes to the ER if he gets ticks on him. As I said, I wish I had. Evidently, the blacklegged tick carries 16 "tick transmitted human pathogens," not only "Lyme Disease."

In the Spring, nymph stage ticks get dropped in the leaf litter and will usually look to attach to mice or chipmunks. It's at that time when black legged/deer ticks usually ingest Lyme's disease. So it is very important to spray your shoes with permethrin at that time as well.
@williambradfordbaldwin43862 жыл бұрын
Ticks can get inside a pant leg and crawl to parts unknown, believe me I know! :) And they can be found in short grass as well. Once they fall off the animal after being engorged they can be anywhere including inside your house, if you have dogs be especially alert!

Ticks have a life cycle which typically includes small warm blooded mammals which also act as reservoir for disease. Install Barn Owl nest boxes. The Idaho Extension has a plan to build two out of a sheet of exterior plywood. Place them 8 feet high and have the entry face away from prevailing Winter wind. Make the opening oval, no more than 4x5 inches.

We have a LOT of deer ticks in Virginia's Shenandoah valley where I live. I walk my bloodhound every day for 1 1/2 miles. I ALWAYS wear kaki colored pants. I stop for about three seconds every three minutes to check my pants. Deer ticks are easily spotted on that light colored background. Believe me when I tell you that deer ticks are active year round, no matter how cold it gets. The only thing that stops them is snow. They cant get over snow to catch a ride on your pants. A strange phenomenon I have noticed is that deer ticks that get on my dog ALW AYS go to her forehead and come to the surface before they bite my dog. If I check and diligently watch her forehead (light brown in color) I will spot every deer tick she has picked up. This occurs within half an hour after we get home. I then pick them off and kill them with a match. I have picked off and killed as many as eight ticks after one walk this way.

This doctor know about the taught science of ticks, not about actually dealing with them! While some of his information is correct, a lot if information is either left out or mis represented, for instance tick don’t just live in grass, they also are in trees, and when a host (person / animal) is near they can drop and direct their fall, ticks can also jump a fair distance as well. While the material of his pants were good, the color was not & there should be some way to gather the lower hemmed area with a boot band especially when hiking. Light colors, and a “shade hat” with a brim large enough to shade your neck is great! Remember that you are out in nature, not putting on a fashion show ! Be comfortable, but be smarter then the ticks layer clothing is a good idea to prevent tick from reaching your skin, material choice is just as important. Think of how you dress in winter, but instead of insulation layers, barrier layers! Starting at your head outer layers should overlap seams in under layers for instance, a light colored tee shirt should be tucked in at the waste, pants should be worn with a belt and boot bands, a light weight and light colored over shirt should be worn over your tee shirt, but not tucked into your pants, the cap your self off with a hat the can shield your neck, shoulders, and face! Dusting the lower 6 inches of pants with lye deters ticks and fleas also!

During our first year at our house, the ticks were vicious. Even with our backyard mowed, you would still get ticks within just a few minutes. I would even see them crawling on our patio. We later got 11 chickens which are free roam and the ticks have drastically decreased.

Great advice thanks....but..I found that many people that use Tweezers will most likely grab the tick incorrectly by its body, and therefore squeeze fluids from the tick into your bloodstream. A safer better method is a thin metal tool with a v notched end that you slide along your skin to get the tick at the skin surface and "pry" it off with a lever motion. Not sure if you or anyone is aware of this tool.
@thesmallwoodlot4332 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that this video is five years old, so the tools may have evolved a bit! But what i have found as mentioned dressing properly is more important then people think. First think of top down process, ticks are not only in the grass, they are also in the trees and drop on to you, to a large shade hat is a good idea, second is your core cover, a white tee shirt tucked into your pants, which should also be full length tight woven material and a belt around your waist, next a long sleeve shirt, again light in color, and comfortably snug around the neck and neck, not tucked in. This will help protect you from dropping ticks, that can “float “ a reasonable distance because of the shape of the body and their weight. Light colors allow you or someone else see them hopefully before they reach your skin. A light dusting with lye help deter ticks from you, just lightly dust around your pant legs and shoes.
@abesapien99302 жыл бұрын
I remember hearing the "don't use tweezers on ticks" advice as far back as the 90's, so if a researcher at John Hopkins is ok with it, that probably means there was no danger in the first place, and no "fluids" are spat out. Or--fluids come out regardless of what method you use.
