Great job Hollis/Nancy, I'm not sure why you didn't plant more tomatoes in each raised bed plot though? It looked like each bed could easily handle at least three plants and allow you to plant either more tomatoes or other vegetables. Those sandwiches looked really good, but I kept looking for the crispy bacon on the table to put on the sandwich as well 🙂! Keep the faith. Cheers

Please let me know what standard fertilizer you put in your tomato holes besides fish although I could put a fish in there
@fussyrenovator75512 жыл бұрын
Go to his video of growing cherry tomatoes in containers. I think he said there was going to be a link. It explains in detail. Cow manures then a fish in a hole about 8- 10 inches deep - then lime to stop the animals digging up the fish. Then blood and bone for phosphorus, then epsom salts for magnesium as tomatoes are heavy magnesium users. Cover that with soil dig a 4 inch hole and , I think then add more Epsom salts and blood and bone., plant the tomato. That’s pretty close anyway. In Australia we always remove the first set of true leaves at least and plant the tomato deeper than where they were because the plant will grow roots from any part of the stem that is in touch with the ground. I know of a man who told his family on his death bed not to forget to pick off the lower leaves of the tomato plant before you put it in the ground. I noticed he left his high. I would have removed the cotyledons and the next two or three true leaves and planted it deeper myself. Sorry once I started typing I couldn’t go back to the other video to check what I was saying because I would lose all my typing. Pretty sure that’s it though. Anyway it’s in the growing sun gold cherry tomatoes in a container videos. 😃 Edit : I’ve mixed up a couple of videos her but the one on growing cherry tomatoes I’m containers is a good starting point. I found it really fascinating.

@HollisNancysHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I have never had that problem. I cover the fish with a heavy covering of garden lime. Do you do that?? It may be a problem in your area locally. I recommend not using the fish anymore since that is the only thing you have done different. Another subscriber informed me they got maggots and all they had was bone and blood meal. I have never heard of that happening either. ????? I am very sorry for your crop failure. Sometimes bad things happen even when we do everything correctly. Just don’t give up and try to learn from it. Ask others in your area if they have experienced anything similar. Fly larvae (maggots) can be tough to get rid of in your soil once they get in there. Down here we get root knot nematodes in the soil. Folks around here deep till their soil several times to disrupt them. After they are gone, they have to amend the soil again from all the tilling. Also, check with your local county ag agent. They usually are up to date with things going on in the area locally and can help you correct the problems. Hope this helps.

Alot of wasted space in each tomato grid. I don't get it.
@marktoldgardengnome41102 жыл бұрын
Any number of reasons. 1) They have the space. 2) Cross pollination maybe? 3) Disease (blight primarily) We plant about 2 feet apart. They grow well, but, if just one plant gets it, good luck saving the rest. 4) Insects, (hornworms primarily) 5) Air flow? Even when they were back in Virginia his cages were spaced like this, in a MUCH smaller garden. Even the most knowledgeable gardener has encountered things like this. It happens. Anything one can do to "stack the deck" in their favor helps. We all only get one chance a year, to get it right. An ounce of prevention............
