Now, you are correct. I had a bathroom sink that was starting to get clogged from my brother's gf's hair because she'd always wash it down the drain. it was to the point that if you ran the tap for over 30 seconds it'd start to slowly fill but it did still drain. I ran hot water down it, then coke and let it sit, then a LOT of hot water again to flush out the trap. It ate just enough of the crap down there now my sink now drains fine. It was slow for about 20 minutes of hot water flushing but it did barely work. If it was completely clogged or plugged with something else this likely would not work. Your mileage may vary but coke is very cheap and it's good to try just make sure you flush it out before you add chemicals. About a year ago I shut off my internet so they would move out because there was tons of other issues related to her. After shutting the internet off they moved out within 48 hours. THAT is how you make someone with no job move out.

Shop vac is your friend. Had a clog somewhere in one of my basement drains. I have a shower, sink, floor drain, toilet, as well as a condensation drain from the ac. I was pretty sure the clog was closest to the sink so I put duct tape over the other drains except the toilet, just shut the lid. Then placed something heavy on the tape in the shower and floor drain. Next, I sealed the vacuum hose to the sink drain and first used the suction feature and then switched the hose to where it blows air. Went back and forth between these two and the clog was cleaned! Just be sure the hose and all other drains are sealed. Otherwise you will blow the nastiness from the drain all over the place.

From an electrician and former chef: Youre puting a mild degreaser down the drain. 1) it cleans the pipes of deposits, 2) Degreaser strips oils out of hair and dries it out. 3) something like a dish soap strings out ( mixes well into water). Its a pretty solid method, i also like to use very hot water to further help break up natural build up. A few other old timmy tricks are, boil water and pour it down the drain if it is slow. Pickle juice ( vinegar, and you can add baking soda for more effectiveness)- work similar to degreaser. Use something like rid-ex once a year in all drains. And last tip, put a stopper ( drain plug) in and fill the basin (sink, tub, exc) a little above the plug to create a negative pressure in the pipes ( it will be a psi rating lower than the 20psi forced through in the vid.). Your on the right track for keeping it clear. Great job. Donny dont do's, strait degreaser and not rincing it out- it will eat the "bonding agent"! Leaving cleansers in the tank of a toilet for hours or days- it dries out and corrodes/oxides metal and rubber parts. And last for this is, putting things down the drain that expand when wet ( rice, pasta, tampons, large amounts of t.p., trash). Plumbing health is home health.

I've heard you should only use boiling water if you have metal pipes and for PVC use hot but not boiling. I put baking soda and vinegar followed by hot water down the bathroom drain once a week for maintenance.

As a homeowner I like to use an old gun-cleaning kit to clear drains in my sink and tub. It's nice because I can jam a small brass brush into just about any pipe, and pull enough hair out to at least make room for a bigger brush, a different tool, or clear the drain completely.

I was once told by an older lady at my job was to drop in some palmolive down the drains a few times a year as it breaks down any gunk and prevents future clogs. Not sure if it work but I have done this for some time and have not gotten a clog in years. knock on wood...

Dump baking soda down your clogged drain. Chase it with a bit of vinegar. Done. Don't add sugar to the drain. Its just one more thing that can collect on the insides of a pipe. If you have a slow drain, try squirting some dawn dish soap/degreaser into the drain over night and see if it loosens up by morning.

I know ever since Ive replaced all my taps and drains to pop ups from the old rod/lever design, I get no clogs. Before that, I just took a long piece of electrical wire copper and put a loop at the end. It catches all the hair, etc. But its flexible enough if it gets stuck you can work it out

My favorite is the "Hose End Drain Cleaner" for about $14 , but I did have to buy a hose end ball valve separately. (They didn't think it through all the way when designing it.) It's cheap and works perfectly. But also, I never have hair problems. I bought in in about 1995 and it has never failed me.

The part about removing the P-trap only works if you've got a removable P-trap. I've actually been extremely pissed about this almost every sink if not all of them in my house I swear the plumbing was done by a firmer. If you think I'm exaggerating when my grandfather bought the place he had to replace all the plumbing in the basement. The entire system that we were able to access in the basement was comprised of Frankenstein Plumbing we're talking about Taps used to make up gaps random sizes of pipe mixed together you name it random lengths sizes pipes spun around and circular modern art style formations and so on as an example multiple elbows linked together to make a section two or three Taps used to link together random lengths of pipe and so on it was like the entire Plumbing what we were able to access in the basement was done by a child using leftover parts from other plumbing jobs. I've already had trouble where I wanted to take the P-trap off of two sinks here in the house and in both cases they were not removable again it was hodgepodge and everything was glued together instead of being removable parts they were PVC parts and glued together with some sort of a bonding compound I literally have had a situation now for over a year where I have a length of pipe that is clogged somewhere and you can't get a snake down the pipe I actually had to cut a piece of the PVC out do you even access the pipe in the end because even after getting the P-trap off due to the way the pipe was installed you couldn't get a snake in the pipe like I said Plumbing nightmare. My grandfather didn't go tearing walls out he just replaced everything that was out in the open in the basement. Prayer is running a broom handle down the pipe I've tried a couple times to get a snake down the pipe and the snake won't work I keep threatening to just say screw it and get a long length of small pipe or a broom handle and try unclogging the pipe that way what's the pipe that leads to the sink in the kitchen and ironically that one pipe is totally separate from everything else

Water ram could compact the clog making it worse. Very old school. Drain snake or Drano is the best solution for a complete clog. Enough Drano to make it past the P Trap. Five gallon bucket of hot water from the tub to clear out slow drain from grease and soap. Ridgid FlexShaft does a great job clearing lines that get clogged often.

If I used the ram at the complex I work for, it would crack every pipe in the wall! My go to is the drill snake for kitchen,tubs, and lavs. Super slow and gentle. So many of the copper lines are super thin where the goop sits. The goop sits a lot as decades of settling has comprised the pitch of them.

I remember the old days when plumbers would reach for the muriatic acid to remove clogs. To my knowledge it isn't done anymore, but is that because of the use of PVC pipes? I've always wondered that. I have one of those plastic unclog sticks, and it's worked really well for me. I also have one of those small snakes, but I don't think I'm smart enough to use one because I can never get it past the P-Trap in the tub drain. My wife has long hair so I have to remove clogs from time to time, and man, they get out of control sometimes. It's like there was a small rodent-sized animal living in it, lol. Personally I prefer to remove the clog rather than push it through because not only is it confirmation, but that clog can't get lodged further down in the system later.

PVC is inorganic, so sulfuric acid/muriatic acid won’t affect it. You can still buy it in hardware stores.

I was recently doing a drywall repair and the home owner tried to blame me for clogging their bathroom sink saying that after I worked there it stopped draining properly… turned out their pipes were damaged by tree roots which had started to grow and made their way into the pipes… I wonder if that Kinetic gun would have worked to unclog the sink… 😂😂😂

My problem is that all the drains are the old fashioned type with a cross-guard - metal bars that form a cross shape across the drain hole that cannot be easily removed. This means augers don't fit and those unclogging strips get stuck and have their "teeth" ripped off as I pull them out. What I really need is a very small narrow auger.

@@RogerWakefield Many times! It only really provides one "barb" by hooking the end over, and the thicker strings tend to be better at not curling over on themselves when they reach a blockage. But as a guitarist, these are super easy to come by.
