Congrats, Kiva, on your hosting of the show "Interior Motives"! I use to watch that show a while back! It was hosted by THE FABULOUSLY TALENTED, @ChristopherLowell! He truly is one of THE PIONEERS of the whole Interior Design/Decor and Do It Yourself era on television! Christopher Lowell is arguably the Godfather of Interior design TV! So once again, Kiva, Congratulations! I know you'll be GREAT and I most certainly will be watching!

THANK YOU for explaining the difference between contemporary and modern styles! It's such an important distinction in art and art history as well, which most people (sometimes myself included) conflate, so really appreciate you making this known to the masses!

I live in the UK and bought a house 18 months ago. As I'm single, progress on decorating has to limited to payday projects, but I have got a lot done. Got a nice colour palette (greens, blues and pinks). I LOVE colour, so the only white that will be left are the skirting boards/trim; I have even painted the doors a nice dark cherry colour. Design style wise I am mixing dark academia and mid-century modern with some maximalism (in the living room). I love to upcycle and am very much the school of thought of "use what you already have" rather than buying new. I got some dining chairs from my parents. Perfectly nice chairs, just safe (light wood with beige upholstery). I have painted them farrow & ball railings and recovered the seats with a lovely fabric. They now fit perfectly in with the design style of the whole space. Every item I own and have curated over a number of years reflects me and my personality; my love of pop art, Dali, movies, music and geek culture. I think I have got the blend right so no one thing overpowers everything else.

Dark dreary colors in Scandinavian design? Never was! White on light wood was always!

lol says you vs an interior designer.
@JonathonV2 жыл бұрын
I’m confused by Kiva’s statement as well, since Kathy is correct that Scandinavian style is best known for white and blonde woods. Perhaps what Kiva was referring to are the accent colours, which can occasionally be darker greens or reds, but if the overall mood of a room is dark, it wouldn’t be classified in the industry as Scandinavian.

Me too... I feel like organic modern fits this most but I guess we could do whatever we want and enjoy
@Tony2dH2 жыл бұрын
I'm doing that in my new appartment and it's not as hard as you'd think! I think a good way to do it is to get warm wooden MCM furniture with clear lines, then combine that with smaller organic boho elements like patterned rugs and baskets from natural materials (rattan, linen etc.) with warm tones and some color accents. And of course don't forget lots of plants. Organic modern is indeed kind of in that direction

Hi Kiva I did not do these styles but I do have pieces that are from these eras. I also have some of the colors from these styles. I like to mix colors and styles without regard to eras. Sometimes the color of a piece can fit in the decor without being the same design. Also you can hack it up by changing upholstery or painting it etc. I also like to change up style with accessories like art plants or rugs. Nice ideas to help me out here. See you next time! 🙂

I recently took a design style test to see my preferred style. The answer was Coastal Farmhouse. What the heck is that! I have searched and can find either Farmhouse or Coastal, but not the 2 combined. You might say just take elements of both that I like. I am not confident enough to do that. No skill at this point . Would you consider doing a video on this style Thanks
@jessakent20492 жыл бұрын
I took a few of them and... no. I even got Coastal once and it's really not my style in the least! Then I took Cristina Cleveland's and it came up with Vintage Salon. Altho I couldn't always pick a room or furniture I loved, when I got my results I LOVED every single photo it showed. I can now stop saying "maximalist" and start saying "vintage salon". Although it's really just a name. 😄 I'll still keep picking out pieces I love and finding ways to marry them into something harmonious.

You can go to the settings in the upper right hand corner and change the speed if she’s too fast. You can slow her down but then she sounds drunk. I watch the minimal mom and she talks really fast too, I enjoy the fast talkers. There’s this guy his name I can’t remember now he’s also a minimalist and he talks so slow I have to do two times the speed for him to sound normal.

The Danish pastel style looks horrific to me! ha ha. I'm really into the art nouveau and arts and crafts styles right now; unfortunately, I don't have a Craftsman style house. Think William Morris and early Frank Lloyd Wright. I love dark wood and cozy lighting. No care at all as to whether it's in style or not! I bought my house new in 2005 and chose dark wood cabinets (dark cherry) and very light silestone counters, and fortunately, I'm still not tired of them. There is almost no gray anywhere, and I think I actually made it through the whole gray craze without doing any of it! LOL
@vaderladyl2 жыл бұрын
Sounds lovely. My aesthetic is similar to yours. No gray here but lots of dark woods. And my home is a tract home from the 80's but with some features of a Craftman house.
@youbetcha1082 жыл бұрын
I have an eclectic style but the grey never looked good with the warm woods and especially my red orange wood floors which I always liked. So I decided to embrace the orange red tones and I have found out that navy blue goes with orange and so does green and tans or deeper beiges. It’s a whole new world for me! I enjoyed one of kivas shows where she replaced orange painted walls with navy blue wallpaper which went great with the orange wood floors her friend had. She’s a gem!
@vaderladyl2 жыл бұрын

I don’t like pastel anything. I need color. My sofa is a yellow gold. From Wayfair. My husband’s recliner is dark brown. It’s near a window and we have three dogs who are jumping on the chair to get to the window. My sofa I keep covered if it rains. I don’t want to have to clean it constantly. I couldn’t handle wabi sabi. Still no color. I can’t handle drab. I can’t take it when it rains and is dreary. That’s why I moved, finally, to the south. I would love to live on an island somewhere with lots of sunshine.
